Hi!
I am knew to writing Bridgerton fan fiction. I have wrote fan fiction for other shows over many years (Tony & Ziva in NCIS, Jay & Erin in Chicago P.D.) but I haven't wrote anything else in a long time.
I have watched and loved the first 2 seasons of Bridgerton but never read the books. After nearly 2 1/2 years, Covid finally got me at the start of summer holidays from work so I finally got the time to read the first 4 books while isolating and recovering.
Anyway, the description/details released for season 3 got my mind thinking about what we might be seeing on screens.
So, this is my version of Colin and Penelope's story for season 3 of Bridgerton
I am hoping (if you would like me to continue), to post 2 - 3 times a week. I am returning to work tomorrow after 4 weeks summer leave but hopefully I can squeeze some writing in on my evenings.
Please feel free to let me know what you think!
My Fair Penelope
Prologue
Colin Bridgerton exited his home at Bridgeton House, a faint musical tune whistling through his lips as the sun shone in the bright blue sky. It was going to be another glorious day. He could feel it.
His oldest brother, Anthony, had just become engaged, again, (only this time to the right woman, who would not leave him at the altar), Kate. And, Colin himself had saved the Featherington family from ruin (and saved his own fortunes) from their scandalous cousin Jack and his fake jewels.
He glanced over at the Featherington's family home, his first destination of the morning. It was a hive of activity with lots of servants, running about outside the home, removing all the extra opulent features and furnishings from the ball the evening before, returning the Featherington house back into a home.
He began to stride across the road, towards the Featheringtons' home. He wanted to make sure that cousin Jack followed his demands and left town.
He did not even have to knock at the door as it swung open before he even raised his hand, revealing Mrs Varley, the housekeeper and Lady Featherington behind her.
"Mr Bridgerton, what do we owe for the pleasure of your attendance, here, this morning?" Portia Featherington asked, her eyebrow slightly arched, pushing Mrs Varley out of the way.
"I um…" Colin stuttered, surprised at how quickly the door opened. "I just wanted to call in and ensure everything was okay in your home…" He could see Portia's eyes widening. "…after last night, with um…Jack, I mean Lord Featherington's scandalous dealings."
"Oh yes Mr Bridgerton…thank you for bringing everything to our attention last night." Portia stated, stepping towards the door, silently cursing his actions as he cost her a fortune by stumbling upon her jewel scam with Jack. At least he never realised she was involved as well. "We will be forever grateful…you saved us from ruin."
"Is um…Pen…I mean is Miss Penelope Featherington available." Colin asked as he peered over Portia's shoulder towards the stairs, expecting to see Penelope's glorious red locks.
"No…she is still sleeping." Portia said, placing her hand on the door, getting ready to close it. "Last night was very…hard and tiring for all of us."
"Of course." Colin muttered, trying not to sound as disappointed as he felt. He had not seen Penelope after he exposed her cousin and saved her from ruin. She seemed to disappear.
"Well thank you for calling on us Mr Bridgerton and for checking on our welfare…it is much appreciated." Portia said, already closing the door.
"Ah wait!" Colin exclaimed, reaching forward, pushing the door open again, taking Lady Featherington by surprise. "I um…sorry. Could you um, just let Pen…Miss Featherington know I called and maybe I could call again later?"
"I will let her know you called in Mr Bridgerton but I do not think a visit will be possible." Portia replied. She could see a question forming on Colin's lips and continued to speak before he could ask it. "We will be heading to the country for a while."
"But the season is not over!" Colin exclaimed and silently cursed himself. "I mean, I was not aware that you had a country residence…I just…I thought you resided in the ton all year round." He shook his head…why was he such a disaster this morning?
"Normally yes." Portia stated cautiously. "But Lady Danbury has offered us her country home. I think she could see we need a break from the ton…after everything with…" She trailed off.
"Yes, completely understandable." Colin stated, although in his head, he could not picture Lady Featherington in the country. "It's just such a pity that you will miss Anthony…I mean Viscount Bridgerton's wedding to Miss Sharma."
"There is 6 more unwed Bridgertons…I am sure we will make one of their weddings." Portia joked, preparing to close the door.
Colin gave a small laugh out of politeness. "Yes I suppose so." He sighed.
"Goodbye Mr Bridgerton." Portia said, already beginning to close the door.
"Um…" Colin stuttered, reaching out to push the door again.
Portia gave an exasperated sigh. "Yes, Mr Bridgerton?"
"I um…I will likely be going travelling again after Anthony's…the Viscount Bridgerton's wedding." Colin said. He watched Lady Featherington tip her head to the side. He could tell she was becoming impatient. "Can you let Pen…I mean Miss Featherington know that I will write?"
"Of course Mr Bridgerton." She said, giving a small polite as Colin exhaled. "Safe travels."
"Thank you…and you too." He stated but the door was already closed in his face. He shook his head in confusion and walked towards his own home again, glancing over his shoulder to the Featherington's home momentarily.
After Portia closed the door she sighed and turned to the stairs, where Penelope stepped out from behind a pillar, in her nightgown. Her eyes clearly showing she did not get much sleep and deep sadness as well.
"Did you hear that?" Portia asked, walking towards the stairs.
"Yes mama." Penelope softly said, nodding her head.
"He said he would write." Portia added, as she began walking up the stairs.
"Um huh." Penelope muttered.
Portia softly sighed. She could tell something had happened with the Bridgertons last night, especially as Eloise had not appeared first thing to share Anthony's engagement or to try and find out what happened with cousin Jack.
However, she could also tell Penelope was not ready to share so instead, she gave her daughter's shoulders a quick squeeze as she passed her on the stairs, heading to her own bedroom.
Yes, leaving the ton and creating a little space between Penelope and the Bridgertons was what was best for Penelope and for once, she was going to put Penelope's needs first.
To be continued…if you want me to?
