The History

The sun is peeping through the curtains signalling that it is morning, and usually Jane likes to be able to get up, pull them back, and welcome in the daylight – generally to her annoyance. This morning he appears less eager to get out of bed. They've had a hectic week on a case and now they're both enjoying a lazy Saturday morning, together, still naked from their passion the night before.

Throughout their first month of being together, Lisbon was self-conscious being so bare in front of him at any other time apart from during their lovemaking. Now she doesn't mind, he has worshipped her body enough, kissed every inch it, showing her how perfect and sexy she is.

It is a little warm, so they've discarded the sheets and she is laying propped up on his chest whilst reading one of the "trashy" magazines she likes. He's using one hand to read a book and the other he's mindlessly twirling her dark locks with, only letting go to turn his page every-so-often. This is what many would describe as domestic bliss, being able to relax so easily, not needing to be so involved in each other but just enjoying the company. It's nice. He doesn't think he could be any more in love with her and she feels the same.

Last night they went straight from work to catch a movie and then had a late dinner, nothing fancy, just a burger and fries, at a diner before going back to her place and continuing their fun but in her bedroom. They may have been a couple for a few months now, but they still feel like they're living on cloud nine, things couldn't be better.

When she giggles quietly at something she has just read, he is immediately lowering his own book, being nosy about what could have possibly humoured her. "Care to share?" He asks and moves the hand from her hair to the magazine which he attempts to tilt upwards, but she is quick to pull it flush against her chest. "I mean, now I have to know what you're reading." Before he can try and grab the paper again, she is quick to sit up and shuffle away from him, her green eyes wide and cheeks flushed. "Teresa?"

"It's nothing."

"It's obviously something." He retorts and holds a hand out to her, hoping for her to pass him over the magazine so he can see the article she was reading. Somewhat reluctantly she passes it across whilst pulling her knees to her chest, the action just increasing his curiosity.

"It really is nothing." She repeats as he turns it over and an article about partners sharing their sexual history with each other stares back at him. Jane screws up his expression, still confused as to why she was hiding this from him, and when he looks back to her – perplexity obvious – he opens his mouth to say something, but no words come out. "It's just that we've never talked about it." She offers as an explanation, but he remains bewildered.

"And you don't want to?"

"It isn't that…"

"Are you embarrassed?" He cocks his head. "Or are you too uncomfortable to have this conversation?"

He would never force her to have a conversation that she wasn't comfortable with, especially of a sexual nature, and she appreciates that. He respects her boundaries, and she respects his, it is one of the reasons they work so well together and have done (professionally) for many years. "It's not that…" Lisbon trails with a sigh, all while internally battling with herself about whether to expand and he waits patiently. His patience causes her to push on. "I just know my list is going to be longer than yours. Maybe a lot longer."

"And? There's nothing wrong with that." He shrugs, looking unperturbed at the discussion. "You're right, my list isn't very long. I was with Angela from my late teens and since her death I've not had many sexual partners. That doesn't mean you having more than me, even if it is a lot more, is wrong." He effortlessly makes her feel so much better and the soft smile now resting on her face and her no-longer-tense shoulders are evidence of that. "We don't have to talk numbers though if you don't want to." He then closes the magazine and chucks it to the bottom of the bed.

Jane watches her with interest, and he can almost see the cogs working in her head, like she is trying to decide on what to do next. "I have one question." The brunette finds herself saying and he nods with a hum. "It is linked to the part I was laughing at." She adds, mainly to try and drag out the time until she comes out with it, and he knows that, but again he waits with all the patience in the world. "Have you ever... with a man?"

Now he wasn't expecting that, clear by his moment of pause. "Have I ever had relations with a man?"

"Uh huh."

"No, but again I was with Angela from a young-ish age." On hearing his response, she busies herself by examining her nails making a question pop into his own head. "Have you ever had relations with a woman?"

"Maybe..."

He is grinning, both out of shock and amusement and when she nods, finally finding his eyeline once more, he chuckles. "Wow. When?"

Deciding that she'd rather not look him in the eye when she talks about this, Lisbon lies back down but this time closely next to him instead of across his chest. He wraps an arm around her shoulders, pulling her even closer. "Well there were two times..." He raises his brow, but she doesn't notice because she's looking up at the ceiling trying to remember details. "Once at college and once about ten years ago."

"We knew each other ten years ago."

"Yes, and?"

"I don't know. I just can't believe I didn't know." It is a strange one, because why should he have known when her sex life back then was certainly none of his business. He doesn't think he ever noticed a morning-after glow from her but going by her earlier comment there definitely would have been occasions when she's been in his company having come from someone's bed. It seems weird to think about now. "How was it? Being with a woman."

"Shouldn't you know." She jibes with a grin which he follows with a sarcastic ha ha. "The first time wasn't very notable, but we were awkward college kids. The second time was pretty good."

"So good that you didn't do it again."

"Too focused on work."

"Hm." This doesn't surprise him; she has always been work-centric. Ever since he first met her. A comfortable silence settles between the pair, and he affectionately uses a hand to play with her own but pauses when he confidently utters. "So what you're saying is that I need to go out and find a man to experiment with."

"Er no." She firmly replies but suspects that he's just trying to be humorous. Even so she decides to follow up with, "I thought we were exclusive."

"We are. I'm just kidding around." Ah, as she thought, and he gives her a small squeeze for good measure. "What did you want to do today?"

"I was going to suggest going to the baseball but all those men in tight pants, I don't want you to get tempted." She teases earning a chuckle from her boyfriend.

"As tempting as that is because you know how much I love baseball…" Jane sardonically states. "I was thinking a food shop and then I will cook us dinner."

"Sounds perfect."
