Trashy Magazines and Bad Dreams

Teresa Lisbon is a remarkable woman, most who have spent any time with her believe that and no one more than her husband. She is smart, hardworking, a leader and doesn't allow herself many indulgences in life probably stemming from a deprived upbringing. If she has clean clothes on her body, food in her stomach and a roof over her head then she is generally satisfied. One indulgence she does give in to is buying "trashy" magazines which Jane believe are better off being used as coasters on the coffee table. Her like for them baffles him but as long as she is happy then so is he and he always finds it amusing, watching her flick through them.

That doesn't mean he can't poke fun. "Anything interesting about a "new look" which is just last week's "new look" but with a beret, or a C-list celebrity having to sell their house because of a messy divorce?"

"No." She absent-mindedly replies whilst turning the page. "But I know a C-list celebrity who may have to sell his house because of a messy divorce." She faux threatens in jest but the comment just makes his brow dip as he falls into deep thought.

"You think I'm a C-list celebrity?"

"You're probably more famous than half the people in here." He hums at this and stares up at the ceiling, overthinking things like usual and she senses his distance. Teresa sighs and drops the open magazine on top of her before reaching to him and comfortingly running her hand down his arm. "It was a joke."

"Yeah, yeah I know." He distractedly murmurs and then looks to see her frowning, guilt evident in her features. He didn't want that; she never deserves to be sad. So he makes a grab for the magazine to transform that expression of sadness into one of deep irritation that he knows she has in her repertoire. "Let's see what hard hitting journalism is in here then." He declares before she even has chance to complain. "Seven hidden treasures which you need to visit this break, they are hardly going to be hidden now." He practically tuts and she does find his annoyance amusing but that may be because she knows that he is trying to make her feel better. "Top 10 celebrity blunders of the year (so far)." Jane screws up his features in distaste and this time she does emit a chuckle, a sound which is like music to his ears. "Five ways to lose weight without changing your diet – they like their lists, don't they?" He points out. "I don't know how you can read this drivel." He remembers when he discovered her like for these publications. It was some years ago back at CBI when she was being framed for murder and he was at her house ready to catch the real killer – a therapist of all people. He was hiding upstairs in her room when he spotted a copy of Cosmo on her bedside table. It led to frequent teasing until the joke got old and tired. The memory brings a smile to his face. "The perfect Margarita recipe."

"I would love a margarita right now... or just a beer."

"Not for another three months my dear." He unnecessarily pipes up, but she can't be exasperated with him because of the glee in his tone.

Jane shifts his position so that he is now leaning up on his elbow and facing his glowing, pregnant wife, the magazine now tossed, forgotten, at the foot of the bed. Lisbon is softly smiling, the sheets beautifully moulding over her swollen belly. She is still working at the FBI but is now stuck on desk duty yet still when she is home, she spends most of her time in bed resting, trying to recharge her batteries. She only has another month at work and then after that? Who knows. "Eugh, three months is ages." She huffs and tries her best to pout but he knows that she doesn't mean it, she is just as excited as him about their impending arrival.

"You know it will be worth it."

"I do." She beams but her grin morphs into a yawn which is so cute that Jane marvels at the image, feeling so lucky that she is his wife. "What time is it?" She tiredly asks, feeling that now may be time for them to properly hit the hay. At times she is guilty about going to bed at such an early hour, but he never seems to mind. He is always happy to snuggle up in bed with his wife as she drifts off to sleep and her calmness when she does coaxes him into the land of nod also.

He twists his head around to eye up the alarm clock on his bedside table just as it changes over to the ten o'clock mark. Their bedtimes are getting earlier and earlier. "Ten." He tells her and fleetingly she looks guilty, the request not yet even coming out of her mouth. "Let's go to sleep." He decides before she can ask the question which she appreciates with a smile. "Goodnight Teresa." He murmurs and carefully manoeuvres to kiss her gently on the lips, like he does every night before they doze. After switching off the bedside lamp they both settle down, him shuffling closer to her so that she has the comfort of his body heat to aid her to sleep.

The creak of their bedroom door being pushed open has them both immediately shifting their focus to that direction and Jane's heart aches at the sight of their son who has tears welling up in his blue eyes whilst his bottom lip trembles. "Harry? What's wrong baby?" Lisbon asks the three-year-old as she carefully pushes herself up into a sitting position, her husband following suit.

"I had a nightmare." The young boy cries, his lip still wobbling. "Can I sleep with you?" The parents do believe that their son is the cutest little boy in the world, aided by his insistence of pronouncing his Ls as Ws. They share a glance, knowing that when his little sister arrives, he can't be sleeping in their bed, but they have three months to deal with that and wordlessly they come to that same conclusion.

Jane pulls open the sheet as invitation and straightaway Harry expresses great relief with a smile, but there are still tear marks staining his little, pink cheeks. That sadness appears to be forgotten as he makes the short journey to the bed before being helped up by his father. "Do you want to talk about your nightmare?" He asks his son whilst his wife not-so-gracefully moves over to give Harry room to sleep between his parents.

"A big purple monster came to eat us."

It isn't a competition, but a purple monster wouldn't even crack his top one hundred worst nightmares but to a young child he supposes it would feel like the end of the world. "I promise you that monsters don't exist." He reassures his son. "And I will protect you from anything." Harry giggles in reply much to his father's surprise. "What?" He questions, accompanied by a light laugh because he knows that whatever his son comes out with, it is going to be funny.

"You mean mom will protect us." Lisbon seems to release a cackle at their side, not being able to help herself and although he loves it when she is happy, he hates to be the butt of the joke.

With a shake of his head, he tucks his son in under the covers, wedged between them and simply states a "go to sleep" to them both who look like two smug peas in a pod as the young boy lies nestled into his mother's side.
