Magic Moments
Disclaimer: I do not own any of these characters. Just the scenarios.
I had been sound asleep; until the power went out and the loss of my fan made the June heat unbearable. So I opened the window and climbed onto the balcony of the loft. It was only slightly cooler outside, but much more peaceful.
Suddenly I heard someone come up behind me and I knew who it was without even turning around. He wrapped his arms around my waist. Roger. His arms felt good around me even if his unshaven cheek rubbing against mine didn't.
"Can't sleep?" he murmured in my ear.
I shook my head, "Too hot."
We stood there for a moment, surveying New York at night. Or rather early morning since it was probably after three a.m. Then Roger let go of me and climbed back into the loft. I sighed. Of course it was too good to be true. I stayed out a minute longer, then turned to go back into the loft as well. Only I saw Roger headed toward me carrying a sheet and two pillows from the couch.
He climbed back through the window and gestured for me to move over. I obeyed and he spread the sheet and pillows out on the ground and lay down. Then he looked up at me and patted the spot next to him. So I lay down beside him. We laid there not talking or touching. Just looking at the stars until I drifted off to sleep.
I awoke that morning to bright morning sunshine and the sounds of Blanket Person yelling at someone on the street below. I always slept with my glasses on so I could see when I woke up. The first thing I saw was his arms. Roger's arms wrapped around me. I smiled and laid there soaking up the peace of the moment.
Until: "Roger where are you?" whined his girlfriend April.
And: "Marky?" screeched mine.
I sighed and rolled over to face Roger. He was looking at me quizzically with one eyebrow raised. I jerked my head in the direction of the open window and he nodded.
I kissed him on the forehead as his green eyes held my blue ones. Then I untangled myself from his embrace and went to quiet my girlfriend.
We had many more power outages that summer. But never another night like that one. But it was always in the back of our minds. Sometimes I would catch him looking at me, or he'd catch me looking at him, then we'd smile and go back to our respective tasks; the moment behind us. But we never forgot that warm night. It was a magic moment and those last forever.
