A/n I really like writing these one-shots because they are usually light and not serious. If you guys have any prompts, then please let me know.

The Anticipation

She isn't quite sure what happened. One minute she was clunking around with him in the corridor, hurriedly pulling at each other's clothes, and the next she is lying on her back staring at the bedroom ceiling, with a hand stroking at her hair. When her vision starts to clear and the black spots dissipate, she begins to register her boyfriend softly uttering her name. "Hey." Jane says on realising that she is back to full cognitive function. She must have only conked out for a minute, if that, but his heart is pounding from the stress of it. He could feel her pulse racing under his touch, but he thought that was all excitement, but it turns out there was – is – a trace of apprehension there.

They have been together a few weeks now, but they haven't yet made love. Lisbon was putting it off until everything was sorted with Pike, and she had settled back at her condo, there was also the small matter of her partner's ankle healing from his gallant attempt at trying to win her over. It was stupid but it also worked. The past couple of nights though they could both tell things were heating up between them and whilst they were out for dinner this evening, they suspected about what activities waited for them when they got home.

She tilts her head to get sight of him and the movement of his hand halts, instead his fingers twirl a lock of her dark hair. His brow is creased out of worry and there are signs of a frown ghosting his lips despite his best attempt at pasting a smile there. She has worried him, and she doesn't want that. They have spent too many years fretting about each other, this is meant to be a clean slate, a fresh start, a happier adventure. "What happened?" She quietly asks, her voice barely above a whisper.

"You had a little panic." She notes how his sky-blue dress shirt is unbuttoned and hanging loosely open, showing the blonde curls on his chest leading down to his surprisingly toned torso. It isn't the first time that she has seen him like this, she has seen him get dressed after a shower or after a night of just sleeping but in the dim light of her bedroom, his form being dully illuminated by the bedside lamp, it seems different. This whole situation carries a gravitas that she couldn't explain even if she tried. It isn't that she is inexperienced, she is far from it, but all those flings and one-night stands didn't matter, and this really does. She just wants it to go well. "I think the anticipation was too much."

"Shit." She curses and brings up a hand to cover her eyes in attempt to hide her clear mortification. Doing so she realises that she is just in her underwear, a lacey green matching set that she treated herself to last week, and she starts to feel a chill against her skin that is forming goosebumps. Jane watches her shiver and is immediately moving so that he is able to grab a purple throw from the foot of the bed before he carefully covers her up with it, tucking the sides under her body. "This is so embarrassing." Lisbon mutters, the admittance making him shush her soothingly.

"Don't be silly, it is fine." He tries to persuade, the last thing he wants is for her to feel bad about something so minor. They have known each other for a long time and have loved each other for years albeit secretly, they have managed a good relationship without sex, and he will happily wait until she is ready. "We don't have to do anything."

"But I want to."

"I know you do but It doesn't have to be tonight." He then dips his head down to lightly kiss her on the cheek and she squeezes her eyes shut at the sensation of his soft lips against her skin. Jane shuffles to lie down beside her, leaning up on his elbow so he can keep an eye on her just in case it is something more than her becoming overwhelmed. His fingers stroke the throw which covers her and although she can barely feel it through the thickness of the blanket, it still manages to relax her. "Maybe we put too much pressure on it with the fancy restaurant, expensive wine, your lavish but delectable lingerie." He plays with the green strap of her bra but not in a way to try and coax anything out of her, just out of admiration for it. "This is us. You and me. I know whenever it happens and whatever the circumstances of it happening are, it will be special because it will be us doing it together. Alright?"

"So you're saying that you will be happy if it is after a drive-thru burger and cheap beer with me in granny pants?"

Despite the seriousness of the situation, he cannot help but chuckle at the image she has created for him. "Teresa, I don't care what we eat or drink, heck you could be wearing my boxers and I would still think that you are the sexiest woman on the planet." He flatters and her cheeks flush with a pinkish hue, complimenting the purple tones of the throw quite nicely. "We will take the next step when we are both ready. Okay?"

"Okay." She agrees, her green eyes glinting with so much adoration for the man at her side. The past few weeks have been a bit of a fairy-tale, even with the few instances of difficulties but Jane has always been there to help her through them. When she had to make the phone call to Pike to break his heart, he was on hand to comfort her afterwards. When she had an awkward conversation with Abbott in which she asked for her job back, he advised her on how to broach it, not because she isn't capable but because she just needed someone else's thoughts to make her feel more at ease. He may be a pain in the ass at times, but she can see that despite their complicated history, they are good together. "What do you want to do instead?"

Lisbon questions and when she glances back towards him, she spots the expression of deep thought etched onto his features. It is strangely handsome. "How about we get into our PJs, I will make us some hot cocoa and we can snuggle up on the couch in front of a film?"

"Sounds perfect." She grins and then takes him by surprise. When he starts to get up, she untucks her hands from the throw and brings them to the bottom of his shirt before tugging lightly, inviting him to lay horizontal again. He allows himself to be pulled down and welcomes her deep kiss, one that carries just enough heat to make the fire in his stomach roar but without promise to take things further and he is okay with that, in fact, he is more than okay. The significant moment of them making love for the first time is going to have to wait but he still feels like he has won lottery, actually he has won the jackpot. "You look great by the way." She murmurs against his lips, and she senses him smile in his next kiss.
