I was really starting to get worried. It was going on midnight now and Charlie still wasn't home. I paced back and forth in the living room, calling his cell phone repeatedly. But there was no answer. Edward had left an hour ago to look for him. But I haven't heard back from him either. My chest felt tight under the stress. What happened? Was something wrong? Is Charlie hurt? Why hasn't Edward called me back yet?
Tears stung in my eyes as I scanned through the text messages I was exchanging with Rene. She sounded concerned and asked if I wanted her to fly in and be with me, until Charlie was found. I told her no for now. Maybe Charlie was held up doing paperwork. I wouldn't have Rene come all the way here, just to send her back on her way. But if it turns out something happened, I may not have a choice. I might have to fly back to Arizona. But I don't think that will be possible. I couldn't leave Edward behind. It would kill me.
I curled myself up on the couch to stare blankly out the window. Rain was thudding hard against the glass. I could barely see through it. Thunder rolled loudly through the clouds and lightning crackled through the sky. This was a bad storm. Even if I could relax enough to fall asleep, there was no way I would be sleeping tonight anyway. I tried flickering the television on, just to keep my mind distracted, but it wasn't working. Especially as the storm knocked the power out.
Perfect, just perfect.
I fumbled around in the dark, lighting a few candles in each room. Now I was getting paranoid. What if someone tries to break in? So what, I'm a wolf now. And I know how to fight. I just hoped that I wouldn't have to.
I heard my front door creak open, along with some quiet footsteps. I swallowed hard, diving back into the couch, to sneakily peek over the back.
"Bella?" Edward's voice brought me instant relief.
"Yeah, I'm in the living room."
Edward's boots seemed to squeak as I heard him approach, but as he came into view, the wary look on his face sent my heart barreling down into the pit of my stomach.
"Did you find him?" I asked quietly.
"No, but I followed a strange scent and trail of blood for a few miles. It's definitely Charlie. It smells like a vampire is with him." He spoke tensely, moving to my side. He was dripping wet.
"No, this can't be happening. What do we do?" I asked frantically. His dark eyes watched me with pity and torment.
He pulled a piece of paper from his dripping jacket, handing it over to me. The ink was smudged a bit, but I could still make out some of the words. I hovered over to the lit candle to read from the paper aloud. "To whom it may concern. I have your chief of police, if you would ever like to see him again, well you will have to find us. Catch us if you can. Here's a hint." Behind the note was a polaroid photo of a sign, I've seen the sign before. It says, Leaving Forks.
My hands trembled as tears slid down my cheeks. "He's been kidnapped, but a vampire?"
Edward wrapped his arms around me, pulling me into this chest. I twisted my head, sobbing quietly into his shoulder. My heart felt like it was breaking into pieces. I didn't know what hurt worse. Knowing my father was taken, or the guilt that I felt, not realizing how much I depended on him. And regretted not trying to get to know him even more. Would I get the chance? What did this sadist bloodsucker have in store for Charlie? This hint to their location wasn't helpful at all. All it suggested was they were no longer in this area. They could be anywhere else in the entire world. But they couldn't have gotten far… could they?
"Leeches have a very dark sense of humor. They tend to entertain themselves with the suffering of humans. But we aren't going to think about this right now. It's not going to help the situation. I have the entire pack out looking for Charlie's scent. We need to find the trail. Those vampires that we made a treaty with, they are doing the same." Edward said lightly stroking my back.
"What if we can't find him?" I muttered, wiping the tears from my eyes.
"We will find him, I promise you. But for now, you aren't safe here, that vampire that took Charlie is from a group of three others. Sam mentioned that he saw them snooping around the boundary lines." He said with a tight frown on his face. "We need to leave, now."
I blinked a few times, taking a moment to understand what he was saying. Everything was happening so quickly. "Where will we go? I mean, what about looking for Charlie?"
"We will be joining the search as well, do you remember the friends I was talking about earlier? The ones we were going to head up for the weekend to spend time with?"
I nodded. "The other group of wolves, your second family."
"Yes, they said it would be safe for you there. So we are heading there now. We will search the whole way there."
"Alright, just give me a few minutes to get my things packed." I quickly got up and went jogging up the stairs. I didn't hesitate to throw pretty much my whole wardrobe into a suitcase. I brought everything with me. Brushes, soap, anything and everything I could think of. I wasn't sure how long I would be gone. So, I needed to prepare myself. Plus I didn't know much about this other group of werewolves. Edward trusted them, so I would as well. It was a leap of faith. But it wasn't like I had much of a choice anyway.
Edward was behind me, grabbing some things I forgot. He remained calm, but I could see the stress and tension on his face. It didn't take long before we had everything crammed into the back of Edward's truck and we were flying down the road. Edward had his phone pressed to his ear. He was talking in a low voice, strained and raspy. I just stayed quiet, watching out the window. The storm was in full swing. But we were traveling so fast, I could barely see a foot in front of me. Rain, thunder, lightning. It couldn't be a worse night.
I just hope that Charlie was alright. All I wanted was to find him and put an end to this stupid vampire monster.
Edward's hand stayed clasped in mine. It gave me a little comfort. I held onto him, to give me the strength to get through all this. I just hope that Charlie is still alive. We didn't have any clear destinations to aim for. We just knew that Charlie had left Forks. Most likely by car. But he could have gone in any direction. We were heading in the direction of Denali. In Alaska. To meet us with another wolf pack. The Maka tribe. Edward had mentioned spending a lot of time within that tribe. Before he became Alpha of La Push. He would spend the whole summer there, every year. He had an older brother that lived within that pack, Masen. He ended up leaving La Push around seventeen, when he discovered his imprint, a girl from the Maka tribe. He has been living in Alaska ever since.
Edward didn't like talking about his brother, he wouldn't go into great detail about his personality, but he mentioned that his brother was very trustworthy. Him and the rest of that pack. There was nothing to fear.
But I couldn't help it. Charlie was kidnapped. Now I would be living among strangers of a different pack. I wasn't sure how I would deal with all of this. I'd leave that for another day, I didn't have to focus on that right now.I just need to focus on finding my dad, before something awful happens to him.
Every few miles Edward would pause and go a check search of the area, looking for a scent trail to follow. But each time, he returns to the truck, soaked to the bone, without a hint of success. I'm sure it would be a challenge for anyone to detect a scent through this storm. It washed away a lot of smells. I figured it would most likely be impossible to pick up any kind of scent trail with it raining so hard. But still, Edward kept pulling over, getting out of the truck and searching the area.
My heart ached at the bottom of my chest as I watched him. It meant a lot to me that he was going through all this trouble for me. I knew Charlie was part of the pack, so Edward would have no choice but to look for him. But I could tell this was really bothering Edward as well. Charlie had mentioned knowing Edward for his whole life. I wonder if that meant that they were ever close at one point. I'd save questions like that, for when we find Charlie..
Charlie's Point of View
I didn't know much, just that I wasn't dead yet. But I truly wish that I was at this point. It's been a full day of traveling. There was a bag over my head. I didn't know where I was. But the pain I was going through was the worst pain I've ever felt. It felt like my body was engulfed in the flames of hell. It only got hotter and hotter as time went on. I felt like I was going to lose my mind. But I held on. I had to. Bella was waiting for me to come back. I had to stay strong.
It was getting hard. I was extremely hungry and for the last few miles I ended up soiling my pants. These leeches didn't make any stops, they just kept traveling, even after I lost control of my bladder. I could tell it at the very least was annoyed, they didn't appreciate having to smell my urine for the next few miles. I should have tried aiming at one of them with the urine stream. Maybe that would have motivated them.
My days were beginning to look bleak. But I had had that the pack would be on their way to find me. I hope they didn't bring Bella into this. It was too dangerous.
