To say my time here in Alaska was boring, would have been the biggest lie. The first two days had been a bit tense, with Zoey hovering around with an unkind expression and bouts of sulking. But Edward showed me around, to everything Alaska had to offer. Hunting, fishing, skiing and blazing bonfires that kept the little village warm and toasty at night. Everyone would just open their front doors and windows and let the heat off the fire warm their homes at night. Someone would remain alert, watching the fire while the rest slept. They would take turns. Someone new would take over every three hours.
I had so much fun that I had almost forgotten why we were in Alaska to begin with. We weren't safe at La Push, we needed to find Charlie. Emmett and Rose arrived the fourth day, they didn't have many details on the situation. They never picked up on Charlie's trail. They looked worn out. Edward had them settle into a cabin across from ours. They haven been able to clean up, rest and get some good food in them. They looked much fresher now. But, Rose is still going through brief moments of morning sickness. She has been running back and forth between sitting around the fire with us and heading out into the woods to puke.
Emmett sighed heavily, letting his head fall back to look up to the stars. He appeared worried and tense. "I wish she would let me be there for her, when she gets like this."
Edward raised his brow as he continued drawing patterns against my legs. He pulled out a few camping chairs to sit around the fire tonight. Some of the Maka tribe was out here enjoying the heat, including Zoey. Since there weren't enough camping seats, I just sat in Edward's lap. It was much more comfortable anyway. I curled into his arm, bundled in an oversized hoodie.
"What's stopping you, I'm sure she would appreciate the support." Edward commented.
Emmett shook his head. "No, I've tried, she said she doesn't want me to see her barf all over the place. It embarrassese her."
"Well, then just be close by, in case something happens. You don't have to hover over her, but you can at least be close enough to her that you can step in and help if she decides that she needs you."
Emmett nodded, springing up out of his seat to walk off in Rose's direction. It was quiet once he left. My eyes wandered over to where Zoey sat. She was sitting across from me. A boy sat at her feet, nicely massaging her legs. He looked about the same age as us. He was a cute guy. I didn't learn his name, but Edward mentioned that he was Zoey's boyfriend. They weren't imprinted. It was a casual relationship, that apparently they broke up and got back together often.
"How is Rita tonight? I didn't see her today," Edward asked casually.
Zoey sighed, rolling her eyes. "Passed out drunk somewhere I'm sure,"
"That's a shame, I wish she would pull herself together."
"Maybe if Charlie wouldn't have abandoned us, my mother wouldn't drink her life away, just to not feel the pain of being away from her imprint." Zoey flashed a dark look in my direction. As if she was blaming me for this.
I frowned deeply. "I don't know why Charlie would do that. He never mentioned having a second family. So don't blame me for his choices."
"Whatever," Zoey grumbled, folding her arms across her chest. "Tell me, what was it like having both your parents? Having a happy normal life."
"I don't know, my parents split up when I was still a baby. I've lived with my mother most of my life." I said, turning my attention back to the flames of the fire. I could feel several pairs of eyes on me.
Zoey looked outraged. "Then why didn't he come around? If that other woman left him years ago, why hasn't he come back to my mom?"
"That's something to ask Charlie about. I have no idea."
She sighed heavily. "So it wasn't just me. He abandoned you too. What an asshole. So, why are you even worried about finding that jerk?"
"I may not know Charlie very well, but he is my father. I moved in with him a while back. We were getting to know each other. I'd like to have a relationship with him."
"What about your mom?" Zoey quietly.
"She is enjoying her new life, with her new husband and baby. They don't want, or need me around. So Charlie is all that I have, for now."
Edward frowned slightly, leaning down to kiss the top of my head. This was something Edward didn't know. I didn't like talking about Rene and Phil. He had asked me why I moved here and how long I would be here… a long time ago. Back when I first moved here. But I wasn't ready to talk about it. I'm still not. But in this case, I wanted Zoey to understand. I didn't want to be her enemy.
Her sour look melted away slowly, a glum look coming to her face. "Oh I see… I guess I had it wrong. You aren't… as bad as I thought."
I breathed out a sigh of relief. Maybe things would flow a little easier between us now. There was a lot I'd like to ask her.
"So umm, how old are you anyway."
Zoey chewed her lip. "Sixteen, I think we are only a year apart, aren't we?"
I nodded. "And you have been living here, all this time?"
"Well, we all lived in a town a few miles away, but our alpha decided that he wanted to isolate from the town. They didn't accept us, once they found out our secret. The town people terrorized our people. So we escaped to this secluded place to rebuild." Zoey said, nodding to the cabins surrounding us. "But our alpha died, we were never able to fully rebuild."
"So, who is the leader of this community?"
Edward snorted, shifting over to take a drink from a can of beer. "Noah, the late Alpha's son. He is pathetic."
Zoey snickered, while the others became tense. It was obvious that they didn't want to speak ill of their current leader. But Zoey didn't seem to mind.
"Noah is a moron, it's you Edward, that should become our Alpha. We all trust you." Zoey said with a smile.
There was some muttering amongst the group. Mostly in approval.
Edward rubbed his chin, a pensive look coming to his face. "I'll tell you what, once we find Charlie, I'll consider it."
Zoey's eyes widened. "I've been begging you for years to take over, what made you change your mind?"
Edward's eyes flickered to me for a moment. "Things change," A smile tugged at his lips.
The boy sitting at Zoey's legs snickered. "I get it, now that he knows his woman's sister is part of this pack, he will stick his neck out to help us."
"Shut up Evan, or he might change his mind." Zoey made a face, before looking at Edward and I both. A smile came to her face. "In that case, we have no choice, we have to all pitch in and look for my worthless father."
"Noah won't let that happen, you heard him. He doesn't even want Edward here, let alone letting any of us help." A man muttered, sitting slouched in his seat. He had stayed quiet most of the night. He was a really rough looking man, with hands that looked like they had been through a war. He looked to be around Charlie's age.
"Come on Drew, he will listen to you, if you bring it up to him. Noah always has been afraid of you." Zoey smirked.
"He isn't the only one," Evan said with a sour look.
Drew stared down at Even with a dark, intense glare. "You say something boy?" His tone wasn't too friendly. I remembered that Edward had mentioned this man, Drew had been a father-figure to him during his time here in Alaska. He stayed with him in his cabin for a while. Along with my sister Zoey. Since her mother wasn't around much to care for her, Drew took her in as well. The three of them had a close bond. Edward and Zoey interacted like siblings at times and Drew watched over them like a moody, unimpressed father. It was heart-warming.
"No, nothing sir." Evan said quickly, ducking his head in respect.
Zoey pleaded. "Please Drew, this may be the only chance left to bring this pack back to life. I can't even remember the last time I truly felt like a wolf. Let's just help them out."
"Fine, fine, but Noah isn't going to listen to a word I say on it. It's best to come up with a plan to sneak a few of our people out with Edward, once he leaves to continue the search." Drew said with a heavy sigh.
"Are you insane, if Noah finds out that anyone leaves this place, they will be banished from the pack." A girl commented with a scowl. "Why should we risk our lives, for these outsiders?"
"Edward isn't an outsider," Zoey hissed, standing up to face the girl.
She stood as well, equally aggressive. "Yes he is. The second he stepped away from this pack, he became an outsider. Born here, or not."
"That's enough Leona, it doesn't matter where he lives, or who he claims his parents to be. He has the Maka tribe blood, running through his veins. The same with the La Push tribe." Drew said with a tight look in Edward's direction. "He has the right to choose which pack to call him. He made the choice. Respect it."
I looked at Edward, taking note of the discomfort lingering on his face. He hadn't told me much about his past. It was never something that he enjoyed talking about. I wondered why that was. I recalled Charlie had mentioned he lived with his adoptive parents, in La Push. But never mentioned anything about his real parents. It was something I've wanted to ask for a long time. But I couldn't find the courage to ask. It wasn't my business. I figured that Edward would tell me, when he was ready. I could see the look in his eyes. Sadness.
"It's not like I wanted to pick between the two places. I just… went with my gut. That turned out to be a mistake, anyway. I lost them both, either way. I don't know why we have to go over this, every time I come around." Edward narrowed his eyes on Leona.
She glared at him coldly, before turning away and walking back to her cabin. She seemed hurt as well. Like she was in just as much pain as Edward was. Her dirty blonde hair was pulled up into a messy bun at the top of her head. She was pretty. A bit more pale than the others. But her eyes always seemed to follow Edward. When we were around. She stared towards him with contempt. While pretending that I didn't even exist. She was older, like Drew. I didn't know what her story was. But I'm not sure that I wanted to know. She always seemed to want to pick a fight with Edward.
"I'm sorry about my mom," Evan said looking at Edward. "She was always so close with your dad, especially when her husband died."
"I don't blame her." Edward muttered, looking away from everyone. This conversation really had taken a toll on him.
"When your old man passed away, we thought you would hang around and take over his place as Alpha of our pack. That's how it should have gone down. But your mom, Conna, wanted more for you." Drew said with a stoic look towards Edward."
"I'd rather not talk about all this tonight." Edward gave him a serious look.
Drew nodded, letting his shoulder slump.
That's all I heard in regards to Edward's past. It left me with more questions. But I would respect his boundaries. We had time to really get to know and understand each other. I hope that over time, he will begin to open up, even more to me.
"Very well, but perhaps you could tell us, how many of us do you need? To help find Erza's father?" Drew asked calmly.
Zoey narrowed her eyes at Drew. "Don't call me that."
I had noticed Edward called her by that name when we first arrived. A few others from time to time call her Erza as well. But she would be quick to correct them.
"Why do they call you that?" I asked hesitantly.
Zoey met my gaze with reluctance. "That was the name that Charlie gave me at birth, but my mom changed it after he left. She didn't want me to have any connection to the guy."
"I guess that does make sense."
"Don't you dare start calling me that." She warned.
I held my hands up innocently. "I wouldn't do that. Relax. Although it is a very unique name. I don't see why you wouldn't like it."
"Because it's just a reminder that my parents split up, and things suck. I will go by Zoey from now on."
"Anyway," Drew interrupted us, keeping his sights on Edward. "What is your plan, how many of us do you need for your search and rescue?"
"Well, I have two at La Push keeping watch, Bella and I will remain here to search this area. Rosalie and Emmett will go ahead to fan out the search in the neighboring countries. So, two more to back track between here and La Push would be a great help." Edward said with a sharp nod.
Drew smirked slightly. "It sounds like a solid plan. Noah and I will search."
Evan snorted. "Who says I want to be involved in this crazy scheme?"
"If you value our relationship at all, you will go with Drew and find that prick." Zoey said heatedly, pushing Evan from her legs.
Evan pouted. "You're so mean babe. Fine. I'll go with Drew."
Well at least we had some kind of plan, right? I'm not sure how this was going to go. Or what hope we would have finding Charlie. I was really worried about him. But he was a strong man. I knew he was tough. If he was still alive I had faith that he was hanging on. Just keep holding on dad, we will find you.
Suddenly there was a shrill ringing sound from Edward's pocket, causing me to jump, along with everyone else seated around the fire. Edward threw an apologetic look to us, before putting his phone to his ear.
"Hello?"
"You aren't trying very hard to find Charlie, I thought this beast was important to the La Push pack. Did I pick wrong? Maybe I should have gone for his daughter. The sweet Bella. Maybe I'll swing by and snatch her up as well. This cat-and-mouse chase is getting a little boring. Don't you agree? Alpha Edward." I heard the unknown caller speaking on the other end of the phone. Chills rolled down my spine at the mention of me. I hoped they were just bluffing. There is no way that those vampires found me. Could they have? Are we all in danger here as well?
A/N: Thanks for reading! I'm sorry it took so long for me to update. I go camping every other weekend, so sometimes I have internet connections, sometimes I don't. Leave a review if you want! What is your opinion on Zoey?
