'Why'd you always argue 'bout this?'
He winces at Rose's shout; the words sting but he doesn't answer. He never does - not on this subject.
'Okay, coming or not?'
The anger's fading, he notes - she's just glad to be home. How he envies her this moment, of stepping out into a time and place she truly belongs to. He wants to explain to her, say why he hates doing this, but he doesn't want pity.
Rose's fingers close around his. 'Please?'
He can resist anything except her, so he endures the reminder of what he's lost forever. He friends, home, family, but what hurts most is the fact he feels safe there. It's too much like how he felt on Gallifrey.
'Doctor? You ready to go?'
A hand slides into his; he and explains why he's always ready to leave London. 'If I stay here much longer, I'll start thinking I belong here.'
She squeezes his hand. 'You could...I've been trying to show you, but you didn't realise...Our home's together - you belong with me.'
Abruptly, she kisses him, and some of that ache fades. Here, in Rose's arms, suddenly feels like it could be a new home.
