Chapter 21

A/N Where is he?

A bonus chapter for y'all this week. Hope you enjoy

Suzanne was starting to get worried, it had been two weeks and no word from Benjamin. He had promised he would write as soon as he had arrived to let her know he was alright. But nothing had arrived.

She was trying to keep busy and keep her mind from wondering and thinking too much. Just when she thought she was over the nerves of Benjamin being gone, the nausea and throwing up returned.

Since she was due her yearly physical in a few weeks she went ahead and called her Dr. to schedule it early.

Dr. Mathis had been her GYN her whole adult life. She trusted him and was not afraid to discuss things with him. She told him of the nausea and throwing up incidents and she thought it was just nerves due to Benjamin being gone.

She went through a thorough and complete exam. Dr. Mathis suspected he knew what was wrong with her, but would wait on the blood test to confirm.

Four days later she was back in his office and a bundle of nerves. She had never been called back to the office after her yearly. As she sat in his office waiting for him, all sorts of things were running through her head. Was she sick? Did she have an incurable illness? What could possibly be wrong with her?

Dr. Mathis walked in and took a seat behind his desk. He had a half grin on his face and this puzzled Suzanne.

"Suzanne, we got your test results back and I want to tell you that you are 4 weeks pregnant. That is the reason for the throwing up, usually it happens in the mornings, hence the term morning sickness. For some reason it happens in the evenings. This is perfectly normal and it is your hormones, that is what is causing it," he said.

Suzanne was sitting in a shocked state, her mouth opened and disbelief across her face. "Wait-What did you say? She could not quite comprehend what he had told her. Did he just say I was pregnant?

Dr. Mathis chuckled at his patient's reaction to the news he had just given her. Now he just had to wait until the realization sunk in.

Suzanne swallowed hard and looked around for something to throw up in. Dr. Mathis grabbed a basin and put it under her head just in time.

He rubbed her back and helped her settle back into her chair once she was done throwing up. He left her to grab her a towel and some water.

He returned with the items and asked her if she was ok.

She nodded, but was not sure of her answer. "How did this happen? I was very diligent in taking my pills and never missed a dose."

"Suzanne, while the pill is very effective in preventing pregnancy, it is not 100 percent all the time. There have been documented cases of pregnancy while on it," he told her.

Still in disbelief and wondering what to do next, she asked. "So where do we go from here?

"Well, you are young and in fairly good shape. No major health issues, I see no reason you should not have a healthy pregnancy and baby," he told her.

"I am writing you a prescription for prenatal vitamins. My nurse is putting a packet together for you of what to expect. I am of course always available to you to call me if you have questions or concerns. I will want to see you back here in about four weeks to start your regular check ups. Do you have any questions or concerns," he asked.

"I can't think of any right now, but I am sure I will once the shock of all this sinks in," she laughingly told him.

Walking out of the Dr's office, she wondered, What do I do now? Mom, that is where I need to go.

She walked into the farmhouse and straight to the kitchen. Her Mom turned to her and could tell right away something was up. She walked over and pulled her into a hug and Suzanne broke down.

Ellen managed to walk them over to sit down and held on to her while she sobbed in her arms. Once her tears had subsided, she pulled back and asked her what was wrong.

Suzanne then started laughing and her Mom really became concerned.

"I just left Dr. Mathis' office and he told me I am 4 weeks pregnant," she said.

Shock and elation spread across Ellen's face. Her tears started falling and she pulled Suzanne in for a tight hug. Both women were now crying and hugging each other.

Their tears finally subsided and they walked over and sat at the table. Ellen held Suzanne's hand and asked her how she felt?

"I am not sure that it has truly hit me yet. Benjamin is gone for who knows how long and this is not something we planned. This was not supposed to happen now," her tears silently falling.

"Sweetheart, I know the timing is not great, but a child is always a joyful occasion. The same thing happened to me with you. I was 5 months pregnant with you when your Dad shipped off to war. You were almost a year old when he came back," she told her.

"I am not strong enough to do this without him. I am not as strong as you are Mom. I miss him so much and he has only been gone 2 weeks. How am I going to get through this pregnancy without him?" she asked.

"You are stronger than you think you are and you have a great support system. Your Dad and brother will be over the moon and Emma will probably move here once she finds out," Ellen said laughing.

Suzanne laid her head down and tried to think of the good this child would bring. "I am exhausted, I think I will go lay down for a while. We can tell everyone at dinner tonight."

Dinner that night was a joyous occasion, once Suzanne told them all the news, they could not be happier.

"My Baby girl is having a baby." her Dad said with tears in his eyes.

"Yea Dad, not how it was supposed to be, but I think I am starting to come around to it. I am still scared and worried, but this little one will bring joy to this family," she told him.

It had now been 3 weeks and Suzanne had still not heard from Benjamin. She decided to call his parents and see if they had heard from him. She also wanted to tell them the news of the baby.

Emma answered the phone when she called the next evening. "Suzanne, how are you doing?"

"I was wondering if you had heard from Benjamin? He has not written or called and I am starting to get worried." she asked.

"We have not, it is not unusual for it to take some time to get mail out when they first arrive. Give it a few more days before you really start worrying," Emma told her, hoping she sounded convincing.

"I have some news to share of my own, I am pregnant. You are going to be a grandmother," she said.

Emma slid down in the chair and covered her mouth. William became concerned with her behavior and walked over to her. He took the phone and asked Suzanne if everything was alright.

"Yes William, I just told her that she is going to be a grandmother. Are you ready to be a grandfather? " she asked.

"Oh my god Suzanne, that is the most wonderful news. I think Emma has recovered enough, let me put you on speaker so we both can talk to you."

"How are you feeling dear? How far along are you? Any issues?" Emma asked.

Suzanne laughed at the barrage of questions. "I am 5 weeks and just have some evening sickness. Apparently we are doing things backwards instead of morning sickness," she laughed.

"We are so happy and I am sure that Benjamin will be so elated and happy when he finds out," William told her.

"I hope that is the case, it is still a little bit of a shock to me. I should let you go and please let me know if you hear from him," she said.

She hung up and walked into her bedroom. Laying down on the bed she placed her hand on her tummy. "Little one, so many people are so happy about you already. I hope your Daddy feels the same when he finds out. I love you with all my heart and I can't wait to feel you move and all the other things that come with you being born.
