Chapter 30
A/N Surprise or plan
Glad you all enjoyed Elizabeth's birth here is the next chapter. Thank you all for the reviews
A year and a half had passed and the Adams family was thriving. Elizabeth was hitting all her benchmarks and milestones. She was a happy and healthy baby. The family was starting to get past the loss of Isiah. He died peacefully in his sleep about 6 months ago. It had hit Suzanne especially hard and she had gone through a period of withdrawal and depression. She was on the other side of that now and was starting to feel like herself again.
Since Isiah's passing, she had managed to keep their firm running and was about to embark on a major project for a big developer in Richmond. She had done some preliminary work, but needed to make some headway on her final designs.
Her parents had talked to them about building a house on the farm. They had set aside some land for her and her brother. They had wanted both of them to build a house on the land, but didn't want to put pressure on either of them. She and Benjamin had decided that is what they wanted. They had ridden the land with her Dad a month ago and picked out the place they wanted.
Suzanne had decided that she wanted to design the house. Benjamin agreed and left it to her to put her special touch on their home. He only wanted to make sure it would be a happy place for their family.
Ellen had taken to coming and getting Elizabeth mid morning so she could nap at the farmhouse and Suzanne could get more work done.
Benjamin was in New York for a few days so they were going to stay out at the farmhouse with her parents while he was gone. Suzanne hated being in the house without him. She also wanted to talk to her Dad about some timelines for the house build.
After dinner, Suzanne had bathed Elizabeth and was rocking her to sleep when her tummy suddenly lurched and she was extremely nauseous. She carefully laid the baby down and bolted for the bathroom. She had been feeling queasy the last couple of evenings. After she emptied the contents of her stomach, she leaned back on the tub. Her legs were like jelly and she wasn't sure she could stand.
Ellen had heard her throwing up and walked into the bathroom to check on her. "You alright baby girl?"
"Yes, I think so. I think I might be coming down with something. I have been queasy the last couple of days," Suzanne told her mom.
Ellen smirked at her and laughed. Suzanne raised her head to look at her Mom and looked at her questionably.
"What? Do I have something on my face?" she asked.
Ellen half laughed again, "Don't you realize what is going on?"
Suzanne leaned back on the tub. Her mind was running 100 miles an hour trying to figure out what her mom was referring to. Suddenly like a light switch flipping she figured out what her Mom was alluding to. She took a deep breath and leaned back. She was trying to remember when her last period was. She jumped up on shaky legs and walked into the bedroom to retrieve her planner. She thumbed through several pages and sat down heavily on the bed. She had not placed a mark on it for the last 2 months.
How the heck could this have happened. I have been so very careful about taking my pills. Hell the first time I got pregnant with them also. I might have to consider something different, if I truly am pregnant, she thought to herself.
Ellen sat down beside her and put her arm around her shoulders. "Is this something you are happy about? Did you and Benjamin want another child?"
"Yes we were planning on having another when Elizabeth was about 4. By the time I had the new baby she would be starting preschool and I would not have to wrangle 2 little ones at the same time. I guess I need to make an appointment with Dr. Mathis," she told her Mom.
Ellen hugged her tight and kissed her on top of the head. "I know it feels kinda overwhelming right now, just wait until you go to the Dr."
"Benjamin will be home on Thursday. I will call tomorrow and see if I can get in on Friday. I don't want to find out without him," Suzanne explained to Ellen.
Ellen gave her one last hug and left the room.
Suzanne fell back on the bed and blew out a deep sigh. Am I ready for another child so soon? Can we really do this having 2 so close together? What will Benjamin say when I tell him? So many thoughts were churning through her head all at once. She decided that nothing could be done about it and she would try and get some sleep.
Benjamin returned from New York earlier that day. They were laying in bed together that night and Suzanne realized she had not told him she thought she was pregnant.
She rolled over to face him, with her head propped up on her hand. He was reading, so she ran her hand down his arm to get his attention. "I need to tell you something. I have a Dr's appointment tomorrow and I need you to go with me."
He looked at her with a questioning look on his face. She had never wanted him to go with her to the Dr before, why now? Sudden fear crossed his face. Was she sick? Is there something terribly wrong with her? Is that why she wanted me to go?
Suzanne saw the terrified look on his face and reached over to take his hand to comfort him. "I am not sick and nothing is wrong. Well maybe something. I have been throwing up in the evening again and I have missed 2 periods. I think I may be pregnant."
Shock took over his whole body as he was trying to process what she had just told him. All kinds of thoughts ran through his mind at once. They had a plan on having another baby and this was too soon. Down deep though he was ecstatic, he loved the idea of another baby. He hoped she was excited too.
He pulled her into his arms in a bone crushing hug. "Oh Sweetheart, I know this is not on the timeline we talked about, but I am so happy."
Suzanne had her head on his chest and silent tears started falling from her eyes dropping on his skin.
He pulled her up to look her in the eyes. "Baby, please don't cry. Your tears tear my heart out."
She wiped the tears from her face and looked into his eyes. "These are tears of joy. I was so scared you would be mad about the baby."
"Mad? How could I possibly be mad about something that our love for each other created? I am beyond happy. This is great news," he told her as tears streamed down his face.
He pulled her back into his arms and laid back with her on his chest. She snuggled into his body deeper and placed a soft kiss on his chest where his heart was beating rapidly.
The next day they were in Dr. Mathis's exam room, waiting for him to come back with the test results. Suzanne was laying on the table and Benjamin was at her side holding her hand. They both looked up when they heard a soft knock and Dr. Mathis entered the room.
He had a smirk on his face as he looked at the couple. He knew they were excited at the prospect of another baby and he wouldn't keep them waiting.
"Well Adams, looks like your family is going to get bigger. Suzanne you are definitely pregnant," he told them.
They both released the breath they didn't realize they were holding and looked at each other.
"You said that this was unexpected, so I guess after this little one we need to put you on something more stable. These surprise pregnancies are not something you need to continue," Dr. Mathis said.
With your HCG levels and your last period date I am guessing you are about 11 weeks along. I will put in a call to Dr. Michaels and let him know. I assume you want to schedule a sonogram with him again?" Dr. Mathis asked.
"Yes, please. Just make sure he doesn't let the cat out of the bag with my Dad when they play golf on Saturday at the club," Benjamin said.
Dr. Mathis chuckled, "I will convey that to him. Now anything we need to discuss? Since this is your third pregnancy, I assume you remember all the do's and don'ts? Get plenty of sleep, keep hydrated and take your vitamins. My nurse has your prescription for your vitamins and I will see you again in 2 weeks. I am going to keep you on the 2 week schedule until after your appointment with Dr. Michaels, then we can move it to 4 weeks until your last month," He said smiling at them.
Neither had any questions or concerns and Dr. Mathis left the room for her to get redressed. Walking out of the office hand in hand, Benjamin asked if she wanted to go celebrate? Elizabeth was spending the day and night at the farm, so she was hoping that some alone time would be just what they both needed.
"Let's grab some take out and head home. We can snuggle up in bed and watch TV," she hoped he understood her hint of snuggling up in bed.
He laughed and told her that is exactly the kind of celebration he had in mind.
Three weeks later, they were having dinner at the farm and were going to tell the family about the new addition. Suzanne had been a little low since Isiah would not be there. She loved him and missed him so much.
Ellen was sure her suspicions were correct, but would have to wait with everyone else for the kids to confirm it.
The joyous news was received well by all. Eric's son Joshua tottled over to her and laid his head down on her tummy. Suzanne laid a gentle hand on his head and wiped her tears away with the other. Joshua was such a loving tender child.
They called his parents after dinner to tell them and Emma was ecstatic to hear the news. William said, "Guess we have some paperwork to update." This earned him a smack on the arm from Emma.
Several weeks later, they were at Dr. Michael's office for her appointment. He came in and greeted the couple. "So Adams, I hear we have another little one on the way? Want to know the sex of this one, or do you want it to be a surprise?"
"We definitely want to know. I think it is a boy this time. My evening sickness went away at week 13 and that didn't happen the last time. I am also bigger at this point than last time and spreading out all over the place," Suzanne laughed.
He spread the cold gel on her tummy and started moving the wand around. He flipped the switch that let them hear the heartbeat. He just kept moving the wand around letting them enjoy it and the sound of the heartbeat. He had found over the last 18 months that soon to be parents could not get enough of the new technology.
He finished up and wiped the wand down and handed Suzanne a towel to clean off her tummy. "Well Suzanne, your instincts are spot on. It is a boy." He had printed the pictures and showed them on the pictures the clear sex of the baby.
Benjamin was beyond overjoyed. He wanted a boy and had hoped this one would be one. Suzanne was ecstatic. They had talked about only having 2, but she wanted to give him a son, so this would complete their family.
They told his parents at dinner that night and William was over the moon that the Adams name would be carried on. Emma was just happy for another baby. She had talked to William and if the kids agreed, she would move to Charlottesville for a while after the baby was born. Living so far away she had missed out on so much with Elizabeth. She was pretty sure that this would be their last and she didn't want to miss out on it with the new one.
Her family was happy about it being a boy too. Another grandson to possibly pass on the family farm to.
