a/n: I apologise how long it has been since I updated this. I can't believe its been nearly a year since my last chapter. Things have been all over the place, health, work, life, losing loved ones. It's been a rubbish year to say the least. This chapter has been the hardest to write, I don't know if it's just lack of muse or struggling with direction to take. But here's something and already planned the next chapter so hopefully I won't be making you all wait another year .

"Must you."

Vergil's voice was borderline frustrated, because he simply was. After two weeks, it seemed that Sera had improved since their talk and their relationship had as well. It was a strange difference, even he had recognised the changes in her. Both in her appearance and in herself, the way she carried herself and the way she oozed confidence that she had once lacked before. Their relationship was stronger, should he even dare to call it that. Because he didn't know what their relationship was, other than the fact they were soul mates- destined for one another, and the way they escaped the underworld was due to that very bond, she had re-established with him. Of course, even he could admit he was tense, waiting for something to happen between them but right now, he was just frustrated. Whatever it was between them, Vergil was still trying to comprehend what it truly meant.

"Hush, I was joking."

He almost had to hold in the sigh as they walked down the road they were patrolling. There had been recent signs of demon activity in the area, which Vergil found bizarre, since destroying the Qlipoth by its roots and the only exit was through Sera, there shouldn't have been any portal to enter the human world. The barrier was intact, or so Vergil had thought. But even he knew, it would only be a short while before something or someone else tried to challenge that. Being that he was officially the new Demon King, he had yet to fully understand what Urizen had done all those months ago.

It was only when he felt pressure on around his arm that Vergil snapped out of his musings and span around to become face to face with Sera. She had grabbed him, whether intentionally or not and he wasn't happy to know that he had failed to monitor his surroundings. It was shocking to himself, just how unaware had he come since separating himself. He frowned, almost glaring at her though it was unintentional.

"Are you okay? I'm sorry, I didn't mean to upset you."

He shook his head, remaining quiet as he glanced over her shoulder to see Dante and Nero following behind and having stopped to see what was going on between the two of them, no doubt. However, he had little time to dwell on it when he saw from the corner of his vision something fly straight towards them. Within seconds, he pushed himself in front of Sera – blocking her from the object. He was too slow, too distracted by his own thoughts and musings, but he felt the pain rush to the surface. As he pushed her behind a wall, he heard the footsteps of his brother and son running towards where the object came down.

"Are you okay?"

He repeated the words Sera said just moments ago, but the look her eyes were wide as she stared back into his. She was suddenly reaching around to try and see where the object had entered which at this point Vergil took a moment to glance down only to see a white glowing dagger, very similar to his own through his chest.

"I'm fine."

The words were forced as he refused to acknowledge the weakness from being attacked and distracted. It took a few moments to bare the pain as he yanked the mirage blade as it vanished in thin air. His body wouldn't take too long to heal, that was he was sure of. No matter how long he'd been away from the Underworld, his demon accelerated his healing regardless. The mirage blade was just like own, except being blue it was pure white.

"Seraphina."

The words boomed above them, as he realised that Dante and Nero had rushed ahead it was only then that he really took the moment to look at who sent the weapon his way. Momentarily stunned, Sera stepped away from him and glanced around the corner, her eyes still wide in shock. He briefly heard her mutter the words of, "no, no, no" in a panicked frenzy.

"Corrupted Angels, we need to leave here now. I cannot fight them yet, it's too soon. How did they even find me? I covered my tracks."

The words were spilling from her mouth that even Vergil couldn't understand what it meant. Fallen Angels had always been an issue. What did she mean?

"Go, we'll take care of this."

Dante's voice was loud enough to bring Vergil back to the present state and out of his musings, his icy eyes observed Sera and gave a firm nod to his brother. Back to Dante's shop then? There she would be safe, with Trish and Lady. He grasped Yamato from the sword, swiping vertically and then horizontally, opening a portal through time and space – a portal back to Devil May Cry. He reached back, grasping her hand subconsciously only to feel the familiar shock that had once passed through, however choosing to ignore it, he pulled her through the portal with him.
