[The Glade, Year 232]
Everything was so green. The trees that gave the shade, to the grass that meshed against the Earth. The only thing not green was the stone wall that seemed to contain the rolling green pastures and forestry. The Glade was home to 63 people. 63 teenagers ranging from 14-22, some were still alive, and some were not. They were from different backgrounds, but the main point was, that they were sent there for a reason. No one knew the reason.
The crank of the wheel sounded, and a metal box lifted into the Glade. The metal box that month after month, arrived with supplies and another person to add to the Glade.
"Aye, Newt." Bella, the dark haired, dark eyed beauty, called over to a taller, lanky boy with light brown shaggy hair, and dark blue eyes. He was one of the ones that arrived up first. Bella was number 5, Newt was 6th. Alby was first, and since then 62 others joined him. 5 years, 3 months of being in the Glade, and he was the oldest. He came here when he was 17 and now, he was 22. Jared had been second and he was 21. Bella had been there nearly 5 years and came here when she was 16. The youngest to show up was Newt. At the time he was sent here, he was 12. Chuck was the second youngest and he was the most recent addition to the Glade before this box, and he was 14. They had to survive, relying on each other to get through anything and everything.
Newt joined Bella, and a few others as they gathered around the box to see who they sent up this time. The box opened and there was a boy, his hair was dark brown, and he was disoriented. As the light hit his dark eyes, he raised a hand to shield the sun. Bella leaned over, looking at the boy, and then Newt jumped down in the box to help the boy out, but it startled him, causing him to move back against the cool metal wall of the box.
"What, who…. where?" The boy muttered, breathing hard, and looking confused.
"Hey there. I'm not going to hurt you." Newt spoke, his lilted voice was a tease of an English accent.
Bella whistled, leaning up, and motioning for Emmett to come over to help get supplies out of the box. Emmett was one of the larger guys in the Glade. His hair was a brown color, kept shorter, and his eyes were a navy blue. He was a builder in the group. His strength helped carry logs to build huts and other areas. He jogged over bringing with him Jake and Jared. Jake was a runner, and Jared was a slicer. They were two guys that looked like they could be related, with their native ancestry clear on their skin, but no one knew for sure. There were others that favored them as well, but no one knew anything besides their name and age, so no one knew of any clear relation.
The boy seemed to still be freaked out, so Bella jumped down in the box with Newt. "Hey. It's okay. We're friendly." She coaxed, her voice gentling, and she crouched down in front of him. Her dark eyes captured his, and he stared at her for a long moment, studying her. He finally nodded and she offered him a smile and she extended her hand. He hesitated, but he put his hand in hers and they stood.
"Where am I?" He asked once they got out of the box.
"The Glade." Bella said with a nod to the huts that were built for people to sleep in.
"Who am I?" He asked.
"We don't know. It'll come to you in a couple days." Bella explained as they walked. "Yo, Alby." She called out.
Alby was a tall man. His dark ebony skin glistened with sweat. He helped everywhere and was part of the council with Bella and Newt. Then there were the keepers, who were leaders in charge of different roles in the glade. "Hey Bella. New Glader?" He said, and offered the newcomer a warm smile. "I'm Alby. Welcome to the Glade." He extended a hand.
The boy looked at his hand, and then took it, shaking it and then looked around. Still confused. "Why are we here?"
"Not sure." Bella answered. "We were all sent here, one by one."
There were a few people that were running from the wall, taking an even jogging pace, and stopped as they got to Bella and Alby.
"What's up?" Alby asked, looking at the first guy. He was from Asian descent, and he was tall like Alby was.
"Nothing really. Got some more stuff mapped." He looked at the new guy. "Hey, new face. I'm Minho, this is Quil." He introduced, motioning to himself and then to the other guy, who had deep native roots, his hair was a pitch black and he had it tied back in a bun. His skin was bronze and he too looked sweaty, and matched Jake and Jared from earlier.
Newt patted the new guy on the back. "Come on. I'll get you some food and bunk to sleep in." He said and then he walked away, and the boy hesitantly followed Newt, casting a look at Bella first. Newt did this as a way to give Alby, Bella, and Minho time to discuss maze business.
Bella smiled and nodded, watching him go, and then she looked at Minho. "So, new quadrant opened up?"
Minho nodded. "Yeah. A 9th section. We haven't run it all yet, but you know it's going to take us more than a week now probably more depending on how large the section is."
Bella sighed and looked at Alby. "Five years Alby."
"I know." Alby said with a nod and perched his hands on his hips. "Okay, tomorrow's section should be 3 then, because today was supposed to be 3, right?"
Minho nodded. "That's right."
"Who runs 3?" Alby asked, running a hand over his bald head.
"Me normally." Minho said. Minho was the keeper of the runners. There were always eight runners at any time. Those runners were him, Quil, Jasper, Ben, Edward, Bella, Jacob, and Dan.
Alby looked at Bella, thinking for a moment. "Okay. You ran all day today. Shift the line-up to give yourself a break."
"It's not a big deal. I can run tomorrow; I just think that I need to bring an extra person. Run it in threes tomorrow." Minho suggested.
"I'll go. I'm supposed to run in two days, but I can run tomorrow. With this new section that bumps my section to a new day." Bella said.
"Are you sure?" Alby asked her.
Bella nodded. "Yeah. It's just safer for us to go together. We'll run all of section three, and then Ben runs section seven, and then I run section one."
Minho shook his head. "Gotta swap Ben out because he sprained his ankle."
"That's right." Bella murmured and then blew out a breath. "Okay. So, what about this. Embry."
Alby frowned. "Embry is a gardener."
"Yes, but he's also fast like Quil. Sub out Ben with Embry. He's been here nine months. I think we should make him a temp runner until Ben is healed in the least and we need to think about increasing our runners. The new guy makes the 64th Glader, and only 42 of us are still alive." She pointed out.
Alby rubbed is head again. "Let's call a gathering. We'll talk about it then. For now, I'll run in place of Ben."
Minho frowned. "You haven't been in the maze in a while."
"I know, but I still know the sections."
"Then let me go with you." Minho said.
"You need down time and rest." Alby said, his dark eyes holding Minho's dark eyes.
Minho shook his head. "This is what I'm good at Alby. I'm the keeper for the reason. I'll go in with you on section seven."
Bella frowned, a commotion gathering her attention. "Shit." She said and then ran towards the new guy, and Gally, who were fighting out in the open. "Break it up!" She yelled as she grabbed Gally, who swung on her, but she took him to his knees. "Watch yourself Gally." She said.
Gally was breathing hard. He had an explosive temper, and it was something that Alby had to keep reminding him to keep in check. His reddish hair was short, and he had a light dusting of freckles across his face, and his eyes were a spring green, and full of fire right now. "Let me go Bella."
Emmett and Newt were helping the new guy to his feet, and he wiped his nose.
Alby was there now. "What is going on?" He barked out, looking at Gally.
"We have rules." Gally said.
"Yes, and he's also the new guy." Bella retorted. Don't pretend you don't remember what it was like when you first got here." She said, staring Gally down. Gally was number 19 and had been there 3 years and 10 months, so not quite four years.
The new guy seemed to be dazed for a moment. "T…. Thomas. That's my name. Thomas."
Emmett perched his hands on his hips. "Gally knocked his name into him. Thomas everyone!"
People cheered and chanted Thomas's name, and it made Bella smirk a little.
Daylight was dwindling fast in the sky, Alby made Gally take a little walk to cool off before dark came. Newt and Bella stood with Thomas as he studied the wall.
"Why have you been here so long?" Thomas asked.
Bella glanced to the wall. "Because we're stuck. That's a maze beyond that wall." She said with a nod.
"And in five years, you still haven't explored it all?"
Newt shook his head. "No. It's really large. The door opens at daylight and closes at sundown. Not that anyone would want to be caught in there after dark."
"Why?"
"Grievers." Bella said. "Come on." She said and nodded with her head to the wall. They walked towards it; Newt followed along. They came to the wall, the opening was still open, but it would be closing soon. "Here." She said, motioning to the wall.
Thomas looked at the wall. There were names inscribed on the wall. "This is a lot of names. Why are some crossed out?"
"Those are the ones that didn't make it." Newt said.
Bella nodded, looking at the wall. "Your name will go on here tomorrow. We're all in order. Alby is at the top. He was first. Then Jared, Emmett, Jasper, then me." She explained.
"Then me." Newt said. "You're number 64."
Thomas looked at Newt and Bella and then back at the wall. He counted the names crossed off. "Twenty-two have died?"
"Yeah."
"How?"
Newt sighed. "Various reasons. Some got sick, others got stung by a griever. Some…. took matters into their own hands."
Bella swallowed, glancing at Carrie's name on the wall. Her name was crossed out. She had been number 9. She was the first runner to get killed by a griever. That's when they discovered that the grievers existed. No one had gone into the maze for months until Alby and Bella took a look to realize that there was a way out. They just had to map it. "Come on. It's getting dark. Get some rest."
Bella made it back to her hut, and was about to walk in when she felt a hand brush her shoulder. She turned and looked at Alby. "Hey." She said softly and then went inside her hut, and Alby followed her inside. She shut her hut door, and twisted the locking mechanism that she invented, and turned and looked at him. "Another section."
"Hmm, yes, and it's going to be dangerous." Alby said and then he reached for her, his hands resting on her hips, drawing her close. His mouth moved over hers, kissing her softly at first, before it turned into more. They pulled at each other's clothes until they were naked, and he moved her to her cot, laying her on her back before he hovered over her. He pushed his large, hard cock inside her, his mouth covering hers at the same time. He moved in her fast and hard, and she stayed quiet against his mouth. No one knew about them being like this. It was something that just happened one day, and they satisfied some urges. They had been here a long time, and what they had, Bella felt was special in a way. But they wanted it to be a secret. No one else could know.
Bella felt herself peak, washing over him, until he was finding his own release, thrusting into her one last time as he exploded in her. He groaned against her mouth lowly, before pulling out and rolling in the cot, pulling her against him.
They were quiet a few long moments before Alby spoke. "Be careful tomorrow."
"You know I am." Bella said.
Alby nodded and was quiet again. "We've been doing this a long time."
"We have." Bella agreed. "Five years."
Alby sighed. "A whole new section."
Bella leaned up, her dark hair tumbled down in waves, like a curtain. He reached a hand up and brushed her hair back behind her ear. "We'll get there. We have 9 more days before we get back to that section, but we'll get there. One day at a time. We do this safely. There's no need to rush."
"I know." Alby murmured and then he leaned up, kissing her softly. "I've got to go." He murmured.
Bella smiled a little. "I know." She said, and got up, her body perfectly naked. It was dark inside the hut, but their eyes adjusted well. He reached for her, pulling her against him again, kissing her again. "Hmm. Keep on, and you're not going to make it back to your hut."
Alby smiled. "Maybe I don't really want to go." He kissed her again.
"Go." Bella said, pulling away. "We've worked too hard." She said, and then he agreed, pulling on his clothes, while she dressed too. He left her to herself and her thoughts.
Bella lay back on her cot and stared up at the thatched ceiling. She was thinking about everything. She wished, hundreds of times that she would just remember anything other than her name and age. She sighed and closed her eyes, hoping sleep would find her so she could rest before having to run the maze tomorrow.
