Note from the Author: Thank you Roxhall, Navywife, Ksamurai, Delia, and Siobhan for your reviews! Mazerunner was one of my favorite books, and also the movies. Dylan O'Brien is one of my top favorite actors. I apologize for the slower updates, this week was my eldest son's birthday, and we had terrible storms rip through my area, and so we lost power, and then of course farm damage, but we're all safe and healthy. I also have my final due tonight for school, so I've been working hard on that most of the weekend. Next week, I'm going to buckle down and get more chapters out. Hope everyone is doing well! As always, I appreciate all of you! Don't forget to follow, favorite, and review!
Bella, Thomas, Jasper and Newt gathered in secret. The sun was going down in the sky, and the entrance to the maze would be closing soon.
Jasper seemed to be thinking as Bella went through the memory again. "So…. this Esme. You referred to her as mom?"
Bella nodded. "Yeah. I'm not sure what she looks like or who she is, but Thomas came to me when I was talking to Teresa about sending people to the Glade."
"What did he say?" Newt asked.
Thomas shrugged. "I have no clue. This is a memory I don't have."
"He said, Bella, baby, Esme is looking for you. Then I was irritated I guess and asked what my mother wanted now." Bella recalled.
Newt looked at Thomas and then Bella. "So, you two…were together before coming to the Glade?"
Bella swallowed. "It seems that way. We were younger, I guess. Five years ago…I was 16."
Thomas nodded. "Sounds about right I was 15 if I'm guessing."
"So, do you think we're all from the same place?" Jasper asked.
Newt thought about this. "I'm not sure. There are some of us with accents and some without. First. What is Wicked?"
"We're not sure." Bella said. "It's a term Thomas remembers hearing a woman saying to him, but that doesn't account for the why we're here."
"And Teresa doesn't know?" Newt asked.
Thomas shook his head. "She just remembers us, and then her name. Whatever they use to make us forget, didn't take hold in her."
Jasper sighed. "So- "
There was some panicked yelling that broke them out of their discussion and had them running into the center of camp.
"What is going on?" Bella asked Chuck, who was panicked looking.
"The entrance isn't closing. Darkness is coming fast, and that means…" Chuck nearly stuttered out.
Bella looked to Thomas. "This isn't good." She said and then the shrieks of grievers sounded and then they were rushing towards the camp. "Get to the main hut!" She shouted, and then everyone scattered, panicking. Jasper rushed to help Minho out of his hut, half carrying him to the center, and then people were starting to get snatched up by the grievers.
Bella grabbed an axe and swung at the clawed spine that shot towards Chuck, and she defended him. Emmett fought back hard, until one griever speared through him, ending him. It was shocking to see people you've spent years with, crumble. People screamed, and cried, as the grievers wreaked havoc on the people of the Glade. She turned spotting Sonya, and she intervened with a griever, hacking at the limb, and forced Sonya to run towards the hut. Bella saw more people go down, Embry and Quil. Leah and Angela, Mike, and then Alec and Jane. They were all snatched away, distracting the grievers enough for Bella to make it back to the hut.
Thomas reached for her as she stumbled inside, his arms going around her, holding her tight. "I thought you were gone." His voice shook.
Bella shook her head, and they listened to the screams of the others outside. The ones that were dying and there was nothing they could do to stop it.
Everyone hunkered down, not saying a word or making a sound so they wouldn't be discovered.
[The Next Morning]
The daylight scattered the grievers, forcing them back into the maze and to their resting place. Bella and Thomas stepped outside the hut, looking at the destruction. Her chest was heavy, seeing the dead bodies of friends…. her family for all intents and purposes.
Thomas felt sick, seeing so much destruction. He looked up to see Gally storming over to him, anger clear on his face. He decked Thomas, and he hit the ground, and then Gally was on top of him, throwing his fists repeatedly at Thomas's head.
Jasper ripped Gally off Thomas, and then got Gally in a headlock when he tried to swing on him.
"That's enough!"
Jasper released Gally when Gally tapped.
"You did this!" Gally spat, clambering to his feet. "Look at what you've done!"
"Grievers did this." Newt said calmly.
"If it wasn't for them poking around in the maze, then this wouldn't have happened." Gally screeched.
Bella shook her head. "We've been trying to find a way out. For five years Gally, or did you forget that?"
"What if some of us don't want to find a way out?"
"And what? Condemn everyone else that does? No, you don't get to decide that." Bella said, her eyes glowering.
Gally shook his head. "You don't get it. Look around Bella. We have no home now. Everything we worked hard for, is destroyed. Our food, or beds, or safety is compromised for what? Hope?"
"That's enough. Throw him in the pit." Bella said, and then Jasper and Jared grabbed hold of Gally, even though he fought, Jasper and Jared were stronger. They took him and put him in the pit.
Bella sighed and ran a hand through her hair. She looked around. People were scared. She saw that much. "Let's get a headcount. Newt." She said.
Newt nodded, and then started verifying who all was still alive, and how many people were left.
Bella walked away, going back to her hut, and Thomas followed her. He shut the door behind them, and he saw her break now. She hadn't done this since he's met her here, and as far as he can remember, she was not a crier.
"Bella…" Thomas murmured.
"Thomas, I can't do this." Bella whispered.
"You can do this. You're the strongest person I know." Thomas coaxed.
Bella turned and looked at him, tears rolled down her face. "People died because of us." She said, echoing Gally's words.
"No. They didn't. They died because whoever put us here, has a twisted way of making it that much harder to get out of this place. We found the way out. They wanted to knock us down a few pegs, but we can't let them. We have to keep pushing on."
Bella studied Thomas for a few moments and then she nodded, and leaned against him, his arms enveloping her. They stayed like that for a few moments before Jasper knocked on the door. Bella leaned back, wiping her face. "Come in."
Jasper walked in, looking to Thomas and then to Bella. "Um. Newt got a count. There's 16 of us counting Teresa."
"16? Are you serious?" Bella was shocked. "So many…died…"
Jasper swallowed and nodded. "Uh. It's you, me, Thomas, Newt, Minho, Gally, Chuck, Jake, Jared, Rosalie, Alice, Teresa, Frypan, Jack, Zart, Clint, and Sonya."
Bella wanted to scream, and punch anything, but she refrained. She just sighed. "Okay. So, let's gather. Figure out a game plan. I'm pretty certain that the way out is section seven, using the cylinder from the griever."
Jasper nodded. "Alright. So, the faster we move, the better off we'll be. We can't survive another night like this."
Bella knew that he wasn't wrong. "Alright. Let's get back to the others. Figure out what's next." They left her hut, and they went to the center to gather. Jared let Gally out of the pit to include him in the talk but told him one outburst would land him back in the pit.
Bella looked around at the worn faces of her friends, and basically her family. "I know last night…brought on destruction. The maze is changing, or has changed, and the people who put us here, left no direction. But we're sure we found a way out of the maze. Now, it is dangerous, and there are some uncertainties beyond these walls, but when we all came here, the goal was to always get free."
"I know most of us have been here at least 2 years, except Thomas, Chuck, and Teresa. Some of us longer" Jasper said, looking around at everyone. "For 5 years, the maze has stayed the same, and for 3 of those years, we completed running the maze. Until Thomas arrived, yes, the maze was the same. I know we're all scared of the unknown, but Bella will lead us to being free. To no longer being a ward of whoever put us here."
People looked at each other and murmured lowly.
Sonya spoke up. Her blonde hair was braided and tossed over her shoulder, and her green eyes were tired and scared, but she left the fear out of her voice. "Bella saved my life last night. I'm going to follow her until the end." She said with a small smile.
Gally rolled his eyes. "You're all idiots. You're going to get yourselves killed.
"Okay, and you think staying here, and let the grievers come back?" Alice spoke up. She was usually soft spoken, her voice sounding like little bells, but she was speaking up now. Her dark eyes stared Gally down. "I watched people I love die, Gally. I'm not going to stay here and wait for the grievers to return. If I have to brave the maze for the first time ever, and follow Bella to uncertainty, I will, because at least if I die, I'll be dying for something, and not sitting here like an idiot, thinking that the Glade is a special paradise."
People were a little shocked to hear Alice speak up so venomously, but Bella spoke now. "You don't have to come if you don't want to, but I do advise that you do. We leave in an hour. If you're coming, meet at the entrance." She left the center to prepare for the last trip into the maze ever.
