Note from the Author: Thank you Yuyu, Navywife, and Goddessnyte for your reviews! I didn't realize I needed a crossover like this either. It has been fun writing Thomas and Bella. The epilogue is next. I hope everyone has enjoyed the story as much as I have. Up next is Walkers Unlimited. I look forward to sharing that story with everyone! As always, don't forget to follow, favorite and review!
When they say that hope and willpower give you strength, it really does. The trek to the mountains was starting to wear on the group, but everyone kept pushing forward, in hopes of finally making it to the sanctuary. That was the sole goal, they all had.
Teresa had remained quiet the whole time, not offering any help or with any ideas. Alice's ankle was still a problem, but they still managed keep going forward. The storm had moved out, and the skies were clear, which made the sun feel so much hotter.
Bella paused to pull her shirt off to tie around her waist. Sweat glistened her skin, and it rolled down, dripping off her. "Aris, we still headed the right way?"
Aris pulled out the map and studied it. He nodded. "So far. There's a place we can camp for the night, build a small fire, eat and rest."
Bella nodded. "Alright. Sounds good." She said and they kept walking along.
Thomas walked beside Bella for a while but kept the silence. He could tell she was tired, seeing the way her eyes looked, but she kept pushing herself for the group. Whenever they got to the sanctuary, he would make sure she rested.
When they got to their resting point, they took their packs off, thankful to rest their tired shoulders from carrying the weight. They got Alice comfortable, elevating her foot by stacking a couple rocks up.
Bella helped get the fire started with Minho, while the others got situated in their spot for resting. Everyone was still so quiet, because they lacked energy to really talk much. Before they knew it, everyone was asleep.
Bella lay her head over on Thomas's shoulder, his arm around her, and they watched the glow of the fire, until they fell asleep.
The sun was just peaking over the horizon, when Bella woke. The fire was just a glow of embers now, and the heat of the day was already starting to take it's hold. She got up, and stretched, and looked around at the others. Teresa was missing from her spot, and so that prompted Bella to go looking for her. When she found her, she was up a little way, looking over a small cliff towards the sands.
"What are you doing?" Bella called out as she walked up from behind.
Teresa glanced to Bella. Her arms were cross across her chest, her hair down now and not up like it normally was. "Just looking out on the sands."
"I know that it's tiring. This long trek, but we have to find Sanctuary."
Teresa shook her head. "I don't know. Maybe it was all for the greater good. The tests. The Maze. I mean, those cranks back at the mall…that's what WICKED is trying to cure right?"
Bella frowned. "Just because there is some virus that is infecting every adult, doesn't mean that the lives of children should be sacrificed like that. A lot of people died in that Maze. A lot of good people. My brothers…. How could any of that be justified?"
"It's a whole world Bella. It's bigger than just us."
Bella shook her head. "No. WICKED are nothing but murderers. That's it. If there was a cure for this thing, they would have already figured it out."
"How do we know? We don't."
"Then why did you come with us? You followed us out of that compound."
"Because of Thomas…I- "
"Don't you say it."
"I love him. I couldn't just watch him…. make a big mistake. Again."
Bella shook her head. "You're unbelievable."
Teresa swallowed. "I want what's best for everyone."
"What's best? What's best is getting to a sanctuary, where we can be safe, and not be tested on like lab rats."
There was a slight rumble and Bella frowned. It was loud, like an air transport sound. "What did you do?" Bella said, looking at Teresa.
Teresa shook her head. "I did what I had to." She murmured.
Bella shook her head again and then rushed back down to the others. "Get up! We have to move now!" She yelled, and that startled people awake. Thomas was the first to his feet, and getting to Bella, a little disoriented, but he got to her fast.
"What's going on?" Thomas asked quickly.
"Teresa called WICKED, they're here, and we have to- "
It was too late, the helicopter swung around, and she saw Janson seated there. He talked into a horn of some sort. "We don't want to hurt you. We only want you safe." He spoke.
Bella clenched her teeth, and then swung the only weapon she found from the sporting goods store in the mall, that no one else knew she had. She fired into the helicopter, and Janson cried out, and the helicopter swung away. "Move now!"
Everyone started running, grabbing their packs quickly. Jasper picked Alice up and put her over his shoulder and they booked it out of there. They heard a hail of bullets start behind them, and they ducked as they ran. Their adrenaline was rushing now as they ran for their very lives. Suddenly, like as if they were part of the rock structure, people popped out and returned fire, helping Bella and the others. They made it behind some larger rocks and then suddenly one of the people that were clearly on their side, shot off a rocket launcher, and it hit the helicopter, sending it flying, into a fiery explosion.
Bella's heart was pounding hard in her chest as they made it to cover. After the firing stopped, she glanced around, taking a headcount. Everyone was there, tired, but there. The only one missing was Teresa, and Bella knew that it was because of her that they had to run like they did.
"Are you okay?" A woman asked. Her hair was braided back, and it was graying in some areas, and she was wearing loose fitting clothes, and she had a gun slung over her shoulder.
Bella looked at the woman. "Yeah. Who are you?"
"My name is Dana. We're normally not this far out, I saw the camp before sunup. We weren't sure who you were, until- "
"Bella." A man spoke now, walking up.
Bella turned and looked at the man. His hair was a dark blonde color and his eyes a navy blue. He was handsome, and had very neat, chiseled features.
Suddenly her memories swarmed her.
"Daddy, why is the sun bad?" A tiny Bella asked, looking up at her father.
Her father smiled at her. "Well, princess, it's because the sun causes a virus, it's called the flare. You have nothing to worry about. The flare doesn't affect children."
"But it can hurt you?"
"Maybe." He nodded. "But we're okay for now."
Bella thought about this. "What is mommy doing?"
Her father's smile faltered. "What she thinks will help."
Her memories shifted and changed, sending her through another whirlwind.
"Don't go." Bella begged her father.
He looked at her, his expression softening. "I can't stay here and keep being apart of what Esme is doing. Bella, there are ways to survive in this world, without losing our morals."
"Why can't I go with you?"
"Because it's dangerous to get out of here, and I can't risk you."
Bella shook her head, tears in her eyes. "Daddy…"
"I know sweetheart, I know. I promise that I will see you again one day, I just need you to stay strong."
Bella blinked a few times, sucking in a breath. "Dad…." She moved towards him, throwing her arms around him, and tears actually sprang to her eyes, and poured down her face.
The man hugged her tight, tears pricking his own eyes, before his eyes fell on Alice. "Alice…" he murmured.
Bella pulled back and looked over at Alice, who was sitting now. "Oh, right. Alice doesn't have her memories." She said and looked back at the man. "She doesn't know."
"Oh." He said and then took in a breath. "Okay." He said, and felt a little disappointed, but he just nodded. "Alright. Well, let's get you kids to Sanctuary. There, you'll be safe." He said, and they helped gather everyone up.
Jasper hefted Alice and walked with the others, still trying not to show how tired he was now.
[Sanctuary]
It was like a village, similar to what they had in the Glade, but seemed more sophisticated. They had food and water there and a place to rest. That was all that mattered.
"So, he's your dad huh?" Thomas asked, coming to stand next to Bella, while the others got checked out. Most were just tired and hungry. They still had water from their water run from the mall.
"Hey. Yeah. Carlisle Cullen. That is my dad." Bella said with a nod. "He's just as I remembered him before he left. He left before I went into the Glade. Alice was so upset when he left, and now, she has no memory of it. I don't know why I keep getting my memories back, but I am. I don't know if the others will ever get their memories back."
"One can hope." Thomas said and then reached down, and took her hand in his, squeezing it lightly. "I love you." He murmured.
Bella looked over at Thomas. She could see how worn he was. "I love you too." She said and leaned in and kissed him gently.
Newt walked up then. "Hey you two. So, Carlisle said that they've been safe here for years, and that they have developed a cure for the flare, and a prevention."
"That's amazing." Bella said, shocked.
"Yeah, well there are more doctors than just your dad here. People have left WICKED, to join the Sanctuary, for far longer than your dad leaving back then. There are other children here too. Ones from the mazes. Aris was reunited with his group. They said that the Sanctuarians saved them before WICKED swooped in. They barely missed us." Newt explained.
Thomas thought about being saved before having to endure everything that they did. It would have been safer for them all. People wouldn't have died like they did, but there was no way to turn back time.
Bella looked around. People were relaxed and looked like they were rested well. There was no threat of grievers, and there was only one focus, surviving. This was truly a place to relax and be safe. It would take her some time to get used to sleeping normally, but she was thankful that they finally made it.
