A/N: Okay, I've fallen head over heels for the pairing that is Mark/Roger, and now you couldn't pull me away from reading RENT fics. Just add it to my list of addictions. My point is that this is my first RENT fic, so be kind and I hope I did a decent job. Also, it's slightly AU in the fact that Angel lives. You can thank my sister for that because I let her decide and she basically screamed at me. Now onto the story!

Prologue

Love was never something that was on Mark's side; the word itself brought back memories of hurt and pain. Nothing worked out for the uncoordinated film maker, especially that particular subject. It seemed everyone Mark fell in love with would never love him back. His first real heart break occurred when Maureen left him for Joanne, leaving him with a throbbing pain that he masked with a smile. And now Mark was experiencing the worst feeling in the world, unrequited love. His heart ached for the musician he could never have, Roger. One of the largest stop sign standing in his way was the fact that his roommate was straight. There was also the evidence of the happy relationship that Roger had finally found after years of holding back, and the film maker refused to stand in the way. Basically Mark had fallen in love with someone who would never, could never love him. Therefore, it was no surprise that the blonde film maker was sitting alone with his camera in the loft on a Friday night.

Life liked to deal Mark a crappy hand when is came to love, a harsh reality he was forced to face. There was no one in the world that would ever love Mark the way his friend's have found love. That was something he envied every day, each one of them was paired off and madly in love leaving Mark alone. The majority may die earlier than most, but at least they would leave this earth knowing they were loved. Mark might live longer than his friends, but he would live a life of loneliness. He knew deep in his heart that he would die unloved and truly alone. It was a cruel fate, but it was a truth nonetheless.

A shrill ring from the phone brought Mark from his forlorn thoughts. He had no intention of actually getting up for the receiver, so he just waited for the machine to pick it up. Soon the answering machine was broadcasting Joanne's voice throughout the space of the loft. The two of them had bonded with each other, especially through the fact that they both had Maureen in common.

"Hey Mark, I know you're there. So come on over because Maureen is out tonight working on another protest. And I don't see any reason why we should spend the night alone. See you soon."

The message ended and Mark felt a sense of happiness wash over at the thought of hanging out with his friend. Anything was better than sitting in the dark with his depressing thoughts. Soon Mark was wearing his jacket and scarf and heading for the door. On the way out he grabbed his messenger bag and left the lonely loft in exchange for some momentary company.
