This was originally going to be a one-shot but is turning into a series of few hundred word blurbs. I hope you enjoy, it's something I've never actually seen on fanfic yet but feel free to correct me and point me in the right direction if I'm wrong.
It's filling in writers block for a certain Miss Cortez, who has gone mysteriously silent on the inside of my head. Which is very odd for her. I have a feeling she's planning something naughty.
Ben watched as the English countryside rolled past in the car. He was bored, he and his brother Luke had long ago lost all of the magnetic checkers pieces underneath the seats of the car. Fields, fields and more fields. And tonight another uncomfortable tent with soggy sausages for dinner.
Dad had gone mental, that was the only explanation for it. He'd gone out and bought a trailer for the car, two tents, some sleeping bags and a portable barbeque and they were off for the summer. Mum had said it would be OK, they'd never give him a whole month off work so we wouldn't REALLY have to do this. She was really mad now all the time. She yelled everytime Ben or Luke asked a question. Probably why Luke was asleep most of the day. He was going to high school after the summer and it meant that Ben wouldn't see him everyday at school anymore which had been a relief. His arm was already permanently dead from being subjected to the same school as his brother, he hadn't been able to feel it for a good three days now anyway since he was permanently within punching distance.
The car suddenly pulled down a dirt track and Ben was certain he had never seen any signposts saying where it led to. Great, that meant Mum was going to be in a really, really bad mood when she woke up. He knew better than to ask Dad where he thought they were going because he wouldn't know. The invariable answer was "On an adventure!" which was a grown up way of saying he didn't have a clue where they were. Then suddenly, as if it had just popped up out of the fields, they were in a town. It was an odd place, Ben hoped they weren't staying here long. Everyone was wearing really odd pyjamas for a start. It was a bit like they were all trying to look like Gandalf, only with more colours. Mum had told Ben and Luke about towns like this, where people dressed up and pretended they were someone else for the weekend. There were cowboy ranches and medival towns out there somewhere. Trust us to land in a weird one, Ben thought to himself. There were no other cars in the town and Ben hoped they weren't breaking any rules by driving it there. Dad turned around as soon as the car stopped.
"Come on son, we'll go sneak in a pub dinner while those grumpy buggers snooze!" Ben jumped excitedly from the car and followed his Dad into the nearest bar, which was packed to the brim with more of the people in funny hats. The woman behind the bar was much younger than Mum and looked very suprised to see Dad but served him anyway. She looked at the money he handed over, maybe they were Irish or Scottish notes? Some people don't like taking them, Ben thought, trying to justify why everyone was so odd.
The food, much to Ben's suprise relief, was perfectly normal sausage and mash. Mum was going to be really mad when she woke up...
