Chapter 9
The six of them race to the plaza looking around in surprise at how quiet it was.
"The gap sensor went off right here," says Mia looking around.
"Yeah but where is the Nighlok?" asks Kevin.
"Stay sharp, he must be close," advises Jayden.
Suddenly the building next to them explodes the force from it sending them all rolling backwards.
"Zip, zip, zip," laughs the Nighlok as he lands.
"He just destroyed that entire building," gasps Mia.
"We have to stop this," says Emily.
Through the smoke the Nighlok appears, "zip, zip, zip," he cackles.
"Time for you to zip it Nighlok," retorts Jayden.
"Samurai rangers I'm like a force of nature. A twister and a shark bite wrapped in one, and ready for fun," laughs the Nighlok.
"Lets go," says Evie as they move forwards.
"Hey wait for me," calls Antonio as he appears next to them having been fishing rather than being at the house.
"You're late," says Kevin.
"Sorry, but this will be worth the wait," assures Antonio as he turns to the Nighlok, "hey shark jaw, get ready for a barracuda fight," he adds before charging at the Nighlok.
The two face off, Antonio going toe to toe with the Nighlok, at least initially.
"I'm one fish you won't fillet," he smirks as he hits Antonio sending him rolling across the floor.
"Antonio," cries Emily as she and Mia move in front of him both activating their spin swords and the dual blast throws the Nighlok backwards.
"It's time to take you loser for a spin. Tornado warning," growls the Nighlok as he starts to spin.
"Hold on," warns Jayden, but the Nighlok spins through them, knocking each one to the ground.
"Hey!" snaps Mike as he comes to his feet and tries to attack the Nighlok, but he continues to spin and Mike is thrown across the ground, sliding to a stop next to the others.
"Mike are you okay?" asks Emily.
"Oh that's not cool," says Mike as he looks at his sword and sees its been broken in half.
"I can beat that, I'm just too good for you," cackles the Nighlok.
"Man we just can't get close enough," realises Antonio.
"Sharks don't stop swimming and I won't stop spinning," warns the Nighlok as he starts again.
"Time for me to put my own spin on things," decides Antonio running forwards.
"No Antonio!" shouts Jayden.
"He won't get past me," promises Antonio as he brings his blade up against the spinning Nighlok, but within seconds he's been knocked aside landing badly against the side of one of the planters and sinks to the floor with a groan.
The Nighlok moves to attack again but he starts to dry up, "you rangers got lucky," he warns before disappearing into a gap.
The six of them power down each looking at the gap, before running over to Antonio.
"Okay, ouch, he got past me," he groans as he de-morphs.
"What were you thinking Antonio?" asks Jayden.
"I thought I could do it, but damn he was fast," says Antonio. "But I'll be ready next time."
"No way, you're hurt, go home, we'll stick around just in case the Nighlok comes back. But you are done for today at least," replies Jayden.
"But Jayden-" starts Antonio.
"You're no good to us injured Antonio, go home, let Ji takes a look at you," advises Mia gently.
Antonio sighs but nods and heads off the others looking around.
"He destroyed three buildings and didn't even break a sweat," sighs Emily.
"He's fast, and that's going to be a problem, but we'll beat him. Same as we always do, one way or another," assures Evie.
"If we're waiting around, scoping out the area and the like, can we get food?" asks Mike.
"Seriously?" asks Kevin looking at him.
"What else do you want to do?" retorts Mike, "fine not full meals, lets get ice cream."
"Ice cream, ice cream, ice cream," cheers Emily.
"Well now you've done it," smiles Evie looking at Emily.
"Ice cream it is, no doubt the Nighloks will announce themselves when they do return," nods Jayden.
"Yay," beams Emily jumping onto Mike's back as the two of them take off towards the nearest ice cream shop.
"You couldn't have just said no?" asks Kevin looking at Jayden.
"It's like telling a puppy no when Emily asks for ice cream. Plus it'll shut Mike up, for a short time anyway," reminds Jayden.
"Well I'm not getting ice cream, I'll meet you outside" he says as he disappears off.
"Fantastic now Kevin's got the hump, honestly its like dealing with children," sighs Evie rubbing her eyes.
"Very big children" agrees Mia as they follow after Mike and Emily, the six soon reuniting and waking through the city. Though the plan to shut Mike up had backfired somewhat.
"Kev, we beat the Nighlok. This is celebration time," points out Mike.
"I am celebrating Mike," retorts Kevin.
"Why didn't you get ice cream like the rest of us?" asks Mike.
"Mike, stop picking on him," says Emily taking her boyfriend's hand to try and distract him from teasing Kevin.
"But he's eating veggies," laughs Mike looking at the carrot in Kevin's hand.
"I've been feeling a little sluggish lately Mike. So from now on samurai only diet again," replies Kevin.
"If you think you're sluggish, then the rest of us are zombies" snorts Evie.
"But wouldn't you rather have mint chip?" teases Mike waving the ice cream in front of Kevin's face.
"No," replies Kevin pushing it away.
Suddenly a car lands in front of them, Mike pulling Emily back, Kevin and Jayden doing likewise with Mia and Evie.
"What the hell?" asks Evie as they follow the direction the car fell from up.
"Up there," says Mia.
"Lets go," replies Jayden as they take off running.
They reach the roof and they see construction workers being attacked, but as they look at what's doing it they're faces crease in confusion. Because what greeted them was not moogers.
"Nighloks with lasers?" asks Emily.
"Those steam punk things aren't Nighlok," replies Mike.
"They're machines," realises Kevin.
"Either way we need to stop them," replies Jayden and the six of them morph.
"Lets see how tough these robots are," says Evie and the six of them charge.
They attack and manage to hold their own, but these machines were a lot tougher than their usual foot soldier foes.
"These things are tougher than moogers," groans Kevin.
"Then that just means we'll have to kick it up a notch," replies Mike. "And they're wearing armour," he adds as he attacks another one.
"They're not wearing armour. They are armour," gasps Emily as she struggles to deal with the robots in front of her, her sword not having anywhere near its usual effect.
"No matter how many hits we land these things won't go down," huffs Mia as she almost gets boxed in.
"Remember never give up," calls Jayden, but he was having trouble as well.
"Enough of this, you wanna bring my element into this, then fine. You freaks just became my new playground," snarls Evie as she switches to her whip.
"Metallic strike!" she shouts and sends her whip around her, the robots being sent flying as metal impacted on metal.
Evie smirks and switches back to her sword, "that's what I thought," she says before pulling her samuraiser and drawing a series of quick symbol and the cogs are suddenly pulled together as if stuck around her
"Ah ain't magnets a bitch," she smiles before turning to help Jayden who'd managed to assemble quite the number of robots around him.
But before she can get to him a series of red laser blasts fly past them, slamming into the robots, and it makes a hell of a lot more of an impact.
Both turn in surprise, "huh?" asks Evie when she sees another red ranger.
"Why hello there," he says.
"Another ranger?" murmurs Jayden, the others all turning as well.
"Hey they're made of metal, so your swords won't cut. Watch this," calls the new ranger as he launches himself into the air and begins taking out the robots with his gun which is much more efficient.
"Damn and I thought my magnet trick was good," nods Evie as he takes out the robots around them.
"That dude has got some sweet hardware man," says Mike.
"Whoa," agrees Emily.
"Guys stay focused, we've got to beat these creeps," reminds Jayden as he launches another series of attacks.
"Well I know one trick that works," says Evie as she draws the same set of symbols and the robots once again get stuck together, rendering them unable to attack.
"Metallic strike!" she shouts as she activates her spin sword and once again her attack proves effective. But not nearly as effective as the new red ranger who deals with the robots around Kevin with ease.
"You guys really need to update your weapons," snorts the new ranger as he takes out the ones around Mike.
"Dude we can handle this," protests Mike.
The Red Ranger continues taking out the robots around all of them, until he gets to Evie.
"Hold up hotshot, I'll make this one real simple for you," she says as she draws the symbols again and the robots once again magnetise and stick together.
The new ranger nods before blasting them to pieces and sliding to a stop a little way off.
"Now that is how its done in this century," he says and everyone can just hear the smirk in his voice.
"Who are you?" asks Jayden as the six of them power down.
"Well I'm a power ranger just like you. But where I come from, they call me ranger red," he replies.
The others share a look, Evie studying their newest arrival curiously.
"What?" he asks walking forwards, "Oh you're mad because I took out those Grinders for you," he realises. "Well they're robots from my dimension. Wasn't sure if you're old school swords could handle them" he explains.
"You can call me Scott," he adds holding out his hand to Jayden who shakes it.
"Not sure we'll have met until I look you in the eyes," replies Jayden.
"Uh, not right now. I have my reasons," he answers tapping his helmet.
"Jayden, a lots been happening today. I don't think we should just trust him", murmurs Kevin. And Mike nods as well.
"Scott, you've said you come from another dimension, so how did you get here?" asks Jayden.
Scott doesn't answer when Mia and Emily step forwards and take his arms, "enough already," says Emily. "He's obviously a friend, he can tell us everything when we get home," she beams.
"Yeah I'll cook something for you," agrees Mia as they start leading him away.
"They're right, the enemy of my enemy boys. I thought I was the uber suspicious one," nods Evie as she goes after them with a smile.
The three guys exchange looks before following after them, at the very least they were getting him back to the Shiba house and hopefully some answers.
They arrive back and Ji is working on his motorcycle his eyes widening when he sees Scott between Emily and Mia.
"I'll get dinner started," beams Mia as she jogs inside.
"We're doomed," mutters Evie.
"Oh I thought you samurai just rode horses, now that is more like it," says Scott admiring Ji's bike as he's led past.
"Who's our new friend?" asks Ji.
"That's what we're about to find out," replies Jayden.
Scott looks around as they walk in, "wow, you guys really live a spartan life huh, no TV, no video games, uh yeah right," he says as he looks down the corridor.
"Oh we have both, they're just in the other room" replies Mike.
"Sounding better," admits Scott, "but you guys are really into living old school huh?"
"Old school?" demands Kevin and Evie rubs her eyes as she hears his tone, he was about to get on his soapbox, men and their egos.
"Are you aware at all, how close you came to slicing my head off?" demands Kevin.
"Alright, enough," interrupts Jayden knowing full well Kevin could go off on one.
"Cut to the chase Scott, educate us."
"Yeah, why don't you power down, make yourself comfortable and tell us about yourself," smiles Emily.
"Okay. I'm here to hunt down a robot. His name's Professor Cog. He's looking for a way to wipe out the last people in my dimension. And to answer your question, I can't power down, because I don't know if I'll have enough juice to power back up again in your dimension" replies Scott, "so this is the best I can do" he says as he takes his helmet off and he takes a deep breath, "wow, I forgot how good real air feels," he admits with a smile.
"I can't imagine how hard it must've been for you," says Emily.
"We lost a lot most of the world's population was wiped out. Material things weren't so bad, but entire families were torn apart, it's not been easy," nods Scott before sighing. "It's been a long day, any chance of some privacy?"
"Antonio's out, he went fishing to try and get his head back in the game as he put it. You can use his room," replies Ji.
"It's my room too," reminds Jayden.
"Please you've moved in with Evie and are hoping I haven't noticed," retorts Ji.
Jayden goes to protest but then sighs, "sure its down the hall to the left," he replies.
"Thanks," nods Scott as he disappears down the hall.
"Wow, I feel so bad for him", says Emily.
"Yeah sounds like he's living the Terminator movies, only worse," agrees Evie.
"I'm still not sure I trust him," admits Mike.
"Why not?" asks Emily.
"I don't like the way he looks at you," replies Mike.
"He was wearing a helmet for most of it, how can you tell?" asks Emily as Evie, Jayden and Kevin resist the urge to laugh.
"I could just tell," replies Mike.
Emily turns to him and smiles, "he can look at me anyway he likes, you're the one I'm dating," reminds Emily as she leans up and kisses his cheek before walking off.
"Yeah Mike, you're definitely green right now," snorts Evie, "don't worry, the only person our yellow is interested in with you. Don't get possessive now, some situations sure, this one. Not a good idea unless you wanna seem like a total jackass," advises Evie before walking past him.
They head to the kitchen and soon enough Mia is serving dinner and each one of them eyes it dubiously.
Evie sighs resting her hand on the counter as she rubs her head.
"You okay?" asks Jayden.
"Yeah, just a headache," she assures.
At that moment Scott walks past, "hey Scott come eat with us?" offers Mia not having heard he couldn't power down.
Scott just looks at them before walking past.
"Sociable," says Mike.
"Be nice," chides Emily, "it must be a lot for him."
Mercifully the gap sensor sounds through the house and they run into the main room as Ji brings up the map.
"There's no Nighlok detected, but there's a disturbance at the waterfront," explains Ji.
The sound of a motorcycle starting causes them all to turn, "he took my bike," realises Ji.
"Okay, not cool, time to go remind Scott who's dimension this is," says Evie as they race out of the house.
They arrive at the water front in time to see Scott facing off against an even bigger robot.
"Great there's more," says Emily.
"Guys what's going on, who's this guy?" asks Antonio as he appears with them.
"Fight now, talk later," answers Jayden as they charge forwards, and Jayden manages to block the robot.
"So you're working with the Nighlok?" he assumes.
"Yes, we have a deal. And it involves you," he replies sending Jayden backwards as the eight of them close in. "And after I've destroyed you, the human population of this world will be squashed like grapes. Ask Ranger Red," smirks Professor Cog.
They attack again but once again their swords aren't enough and the samurai rangers and thrown backwards, soon being joined by Scott.
"You never know when you're beat Ranger Red," says Professor Cog.
"It's simple I'm not beat. You tin cans never get that, I'm a power ranger and I'm not giving up," retorts Scott as he charges forwards again, but once again is knocked back by the hypno bolts, Jayden getting caught in the process as both land hard next to the water.
"I promised to get rid of the samurai rangers, sending you back is just a bonus," smirks Professor Cog as he opens a vortex.
"That'll send us back to my dimension," warns Scott as he sees it.
"You can't escape the Vector Vortex," laughs Professor Cog as he sends it at them, but the other six throw themselves in front of it.
"They're shielding us," realises Scott.
"We got this Jayden," assures Kevin.
"It's up to you," says Mia.
"Kill that professor," adds Mike.
"You got this Jayden, take him down," smiles Evie.
"What a team," murmurs Scott.
But the Vortex is too strong and the six are pulled inside, while both Jayden and Scott are blasted over the edge.
The two of them pull themselves out of the water, Jayden offering Scott his hand but is ignored.
"I don't need your help," he retorts as he walks past, "I'm fine."
A little while later they were both sat on the edge of the water.
"Your team sacrificed themselves," says Scott.
Jayden sighs his hand resting on his kanji, he had no idea where they'd ended up or in what situation. Once again, he was completely unable to help his team or his girlfriend.
"Yeah, they have a habit of doing that, they think I'm the key to stopping Master Xandred, and Evie protects what she loves," replies Jayden.
"Wow you're pretty full of yourself aren't you?" snorts Scott.
"No, its not like that. And before you make judgements, take a look at yourself," retorts Jayden before he sighs.
"Do you think professor Cog sent my team to your world?" he asks.
"It's a safe bet," nods Scott, "so I take it Evie's your girlfriend then?"
Jayden nods, "and so much more."
"If they're there, my team will help them, even if my black ranger is a bit of a douche at times. Rough childhood," explains Scott.
"Believe me, Evie can more than handle herself and as for rough childhoods, she's no stranger to those," he adds. "Did you leave someone in your dimension?"
"No, but there might be someone, I'm not really sure to be honest," answers Scott.
The two eventually head back to the house, neither realising that the hypno bolts are taking effect.
Jayden walks into the house and Ji's eyes instantly widening.
"Where's the rest of the team?" he asks.
"Sucked through a vortex," answers Jayden, "apparently they're in Scott's world now," he adds.
"Yeah well its their fault, they got in the way" retorts Scott.
"No they saved us!" snaps Jayden turning and storming down to Evie's room, or as Ji had put it to their room.
He slams the door behind him, before sighing as his head drops against it.
Reaching up he idly pulls one of the shuriken's from the dartboard that hung on the back of the door. Spinning it in his hand, "please be safe," he murmurs.
