Chapter 14

The sound of the gap sensor reverberates through the house and the six of them run inside as Ji pulls up the map.
"The Nighlok is back, the city centre," explains Ji.
"What about Kevin?" asks Emily.
Mia and Evie share a look.
"Wherever he is, I'm sure he's fine and he'll join us when he's ready. But we need to get his samuraiser back," says Jayden.

The six of them race out of the house and down to the city centre, arriving in time to see the Nighlok eating everything around him.
"Hey chow hound!" shouts Mike pulling his attention.
"Mmm, candy-coloured rangers," smirks the Nighlok.
The six of them morph.
"Oh I'm scared," laughs the Nighlok as he moves forwards.

They move forwards as well, surrounding him as they attack.
"We need to figure out where he's got Kevin's samuraiser," says Jayden.
"Ring, ring," says Mike as he presses call on his own samuraiser and it begins to ring.
"Huh, where's that ring coming from?" ask the Nighlok in confusion as he lifts his right arm, "why is my arm ringing?"
"It's in his right arm," says Mia.
"Then it's time someone brought his last meal back up," says Evie as they move forwards to attack again when a familiar figure appears in front of them.
"Oh no fucking way," swears Evie as her eyes narrow.
"It can't be," says Jayden as he looks at him.

"Forgive me but I must intrude" smirks Deker as he turns to them.
Dayu then steps into view, "Scarf, hurry up and eat. Go stuff yourself until you pop," she orders as she stops behind the rangers.
"Bon Appetit," smirks the Nighlok as he disappears.
"How the fuck are you still breathing Deker?" demands Evie.
"Since my sword Urumasa broke in battle my curse wasn't broken. You could say I was lost, but now I'm found," answers Deker as he moves to attack Jayden at the same moment Dayu goes for the others.
Evie immediately appears at Jayden's side.
"Ah Black Ranger, how nice to see things haven't changed, still protecting your lover I see."
"I didn't get to fulfil my promise to you last time Deker, I don't intend to let the opportunity go again!" snarls Evie as the three of them begin to fight, Evie and Jayden working in concert.
"You have something that belongs to me rangers and I want it back," warns Deker.
"Meaning what?" asks Jayden as he rolls out of the way of a hit and Evie redoubles her attack.
"The other half of Urumasa, I want it back," growls Deker.
"So not happening!" retorts Evie.
Deker flips over her and sends her rolling across the floor.
"Until I get Urumasa back, I'm just a sword for hire. And you will give me back the other half, one way or another" answers Deker as he and Jayden continue to fight, Evie re-joining as quickly as she can. The two of them able to continue to hold their own.
"Then I'll just have to defeat you again" retorts Jayden as he flips backwards, "super samurai mode" he activates instantly morphing as he activates the black box before launching a new attack at Deker.

"Wait, I think he's stalling," realises Evie.
"For what?" asks Jayden.
"Nothing good," replies Antonio.

Suddenly Deker and Dayu both knock aside their opponents and charge at the Nighlok, "let's do this for Serrator," says Deker as they both attack the Nighlok.
"But he's on their team," says Mike in confusion.
"This is not good" realises Mia.
"His true power is unleashed when he's defeated, you'll see," smirks Dayu.
"We're done here, and I will have Urumasa back," warns Deker as he and Dayu disappear while the Nighlok continues to surge with electricity.

"We need to get Kevin's samuraiser back now," warns Emily.
"With pleasure," replies Jayden as he charges forwards and takes off the Nighloks arm and returns to the others, Kevin's samuraiser in hand.
"Got it," he smiles holding it up.

The others cheer until the Nighlok explodes behind Jayden and grows into what seems to be megamode, but he brings his arms together in a giant shield.
"I've never seen anything like this before," says Evie.
"Me neither, Dayu was right," agrees Jayden as they dive out of the way of the blasts coming from the Nighlok.
"This is why they destroyed him," realises Antonio.
"That shield of his is going to be a real problem", says Jayden.

"Jayden!" calls Kevin as he sprints across the city centre.
"Samuraiser or not I'm here to fight with my team, I've been told even without one I'm not a bad one to have around," he adds glancing at Evie who nods.
"Here you go Kev, suit up," smiles Jayden as he throws his samuraiser back to him.
"You got it back," beams Kevin.
"I pinky swore," reminds Evie.
"I did too," smiles Kevin.
"Then lets show this Nighlok how its done," says Mia.
"Super red combination, zords combine," activates Jayden, each of them emerging in the cockpit as the megazord is formed.
"Let's go," says Jayden.

They launch a few attacks at the shield, but are pushed back, the whole megazord shaking.
"Wow, this shield is going to be hard to break through," says Mike.
"It's so strong," agrees Kevin.
"Double katana strike," activates Jayden, but it does nothing against the shield and they're knocked about inside the cockpit.
"This isn't working," realises Evie.
"We have to use the bull disk," says Kevin.
"Did you crack it?" asks Mia.
"We're going to find out," replies Kevin.
"Are you sure?" asks Mike.
"It'd be bad news if this doesn't work," reminds Antonio.
"If Kevin says he's got it, he's got it," assures Evie, "right Kev?"
"Right," nods Kevin, "its now or never."
"Okay Kevin, we trust you," assures Jayden as he puts the bull disk in and activates it, the megazord reforming and within moments, they're stood inside their new zord.
"You did it Kevin," smiles Emily.
"Never doubted you for a moment," agrees Evie.
"We are united," nods Jayden.
"Now, lets see how he does against this," smirks Kevin as they turn their attention to the Nighlok.

They send a series of attacks, breaking his shield down.
"Now for the ultimate attack, use your symbol power and he's done for," assures Kevin.
Each of them activates their zords and with everything combined, Jayden adds the power of the shogun mode to it as well.
"Now let's show this creep who's boss," he smirks.
They send the new attack at him and cheer as he disintegrates completely.
"Samurai rangers, victory is ours" smiles Jayden.
Evie looks at him, "I prefer super samurai mode, this, this might be a bit much," she admits.
"Yeah, that's a lot of suit," nods Antonio.
"Maybe he's compensating," smirks Mike.
"Oh I can assure you, there's no need for that," retorts Evie and Mike groans while the others let out a mixture of groans and laughs.

They return to the ground and shrink their zords back down, before powering down as well.
"Okay, that was a hard one," admits Antonio.
"But we defeated him, same as we always do," smiles Emily.
"With a lot of help from Kevin," adds Evie.

"Kevin?" asks a voice and they all turn in time to see Alyssa stood there her eyes wide.
"Alyssa, what are you doing here?" asks Kevin in shock.
"I followed you, I, I wanted answers. I guess I got them," she says sounding a little bit in shock.
"What, what do you mean?" asks Kevin nervously.
"You're one of the samurai rangers, that's why you left, why you didn't tell me or anyone else," replies Alyssa.
"What do you mean? We were just, shopping," says Kevin.
Evie rests her hand on his shoulder, "she's not blind Kevin, and clearly not an idiot either. This might be a good time to not treat her like one."
Kevin looks at Jayden who sighs but nods, "better you tell her everything, so she understands. But the rules still apply Kevin, I'm sorry but they have too."
"I know" nods Kevin before looking at Alyssa, "can we take a walk?"
She nods and the two walk away from the others.

"Is this going to be a problem?" asks Antonio quietly.
"If it is, Kevin knows what he needs to do," replies Jayden.
"Meaning?" asks Mike.
"Memory symbol, it can remove short term memories," answers Evie, "but something tells me, its not going to come to that," she smiles.
"I really hope not," agrees Mia with a wistful smile as she watches the two go.

Kevin sighs trying to organise his thoughts in his head, part of him was thrilled Alyssa knew. But part of him knew the danger it could place her in, and what it would mean if she couldn't accept his secret.
"So is this why you left so suddenly? I mean how does it work, being a ranger?" asks Alyssa.
Kevin looks at her, "being a samurai ranger, its hereditary, passed down from parent to child. I'm the 18th generation of the blue ranger. My dad was before me, then his dad before him, and so on back to the original rangers. I've been training for this my entire life."
"You mean your dad did this?"
"He did."
"Huh, he never struck me as the type," admits Alyssa. "Is this why you wouldn't tell any of us where you were going?"
Kevin nods, "when the samurai rangers are called, we all congregate at the Shiba House, its where we train as a team and fight the moogers and the Nighloks, and where we live. We break off all contact with our previous lives to protect them, to protect the people we love."
"You really meant it when you said it wasn't safe for me to know."
"You cannot tell anyone Liss, and if the Nighlok realise you're connected to me, they might come after you to get at me or something They've already done it to Evie and Jayden, and you're not a ranger. And I could not live with myself if something happened to you because of me. I've seen the havoc it wreaks on us if someone we love is in danger and I couldn't risk that happening to you," explains Kevin.
"It wasn't that I didn't trust you or anything, but our identities have to be a secret. The only people who know are our families, the team and our Mentor. No one else. For both our sakes."

Alyssa stops and looks at him, "I knew there had to be more to things than you just leaving, you were always so dedicated to team work, to your friends, even to me. But I see now you've got a higher calling; you're saving the world."
"You mean, you're not angry with me?"
Alyssa shakes her head and smiles, "I get why you didn't tell me, I'm just glad I know Kevin. But for the record I'd have kept your secret, and I'll keep it now."
"I didn't want to break up with you Liss, I love you now as much as I did when I left. I just knew it wasn't fair of me to ask you to wait when I couldn't explain why. It was never because I stopped loving you."

Alyssa takes his hands, "you really mean that?"
"I do, if there had been a way, but I didn't see one then. Even now, Liss this is a fight for the world and I don't know how long it will take. I don't know what it will cost, I can't ask you to wait for something that could take who knows how long to happen, or might never happen. Jayden's dad died doing this."
Alyssa looks down at their hands before she leans forwards and kisses him.
Kevin kisses her back before pulling away, "It won't be like before, I won't be able to see you as often, not even close, and we'd have to stick with e-mails and calls. With only the occasional chance of seeing each other, and being with me brings risks," warns Kevin.
"I'm willing to take them, and I will wait Kevin, for as long as it takes. And you will make it through this," promises Alyssa.
"You're sure?" asks Kevin.
"I've never been surer, I'm still mad at you, so you'll need to make it up to me. But I yes Kevin, I am sure," smiles Alyssa.

Kevin smiles and lets go of her hands pulling her into his arms, one wrapping around her the other cupping her face as he kissed her.
Alyssa responds immediately backing him against a nearby wall as her arms encircle his shoulders with the same ease they'd always had.

They break it a few moments later to breathe resting their foreheads together, "I love you too Kevin," smiles Alyssa.
"There has not been a day I haven't thought of you," promises Kevin, "and there was never anyone else."
"There wasn't for me either."
Kevin chuckles, "I'm really happy to hear you say that."
"Jealous of the imagined men in my life?" she asks.
"Very," nods Kevin, "do you want to meet the rest of my new team?"
"I would, I want to know who has my boyfriend's back" nods Alyssa.
"You and Evie are going to get on really well," says Kevin.

They lace their hands together and walk back to where the others were waiting.
Evie and Mia both smile when they see their linked hands.
"Yay," smiles Emily clapping happily.
"Damn he wasn't kidding," nods Mike receiving a nudge from Emily.
"Alyssa, this is Jayden, Evie, Antonio, Mike, Emily and Mia, my new team. Guys this is Alyssa," smiles Kevin.
"Nice to meet you, I've heard a lot," says Evie holding out her hand.
"You too, just to clarify you have no interest in Kevin right?" asks Alyssa shaking it.
"None of the romantic kind, I'm very much spoken for," assures Evie as she looks at Jayden who smiles and wraps his arm around her.
"Completely spoken for," he nods.
"Its so nice to meet you, and that you well know," smiles Emily in an quiet voice.
"Whispering isn't going to help Em, no one is here," says Mike wrapping his arm around his girlfriend, "I can't actually believe you're real," he admits looking at Alyssa.
"Mike I swear to god my boot, up your ass," warns Evie.
"And I'll let her, be nice," adds Emily.
"You I definitely like," smiles Alyssa looking at Evie.
"Nice to meet you Alyssa," says Antonio.
"Its nice to meet you all," nods Alyssa, "and to know Kevin has so many people watching his back."
"Kevin is one of the best, we feel better having him with us," assures Mia.
"I don't doubt it, always were an overachiever weren't you," smiles Alyssa looking at Kevin.
"Oh my god there's two of them," says Antonio looking between Evie and Alyssa his eyes wide.
"Seems the dedicated samurai do need someone to knock them on their ass once in a while," smiles Jayden looking at Evie.
"What do you mean once awhile, I put you on your ass yesterday and Kevin was on his this morning," retorts Evie.
"Your girlfriend is like a freaking snake with the way she can twist," nods Kevin.
"Gymnastic ballet dancer, she bends in ways that would break most people," replies Jayden.
"That's what she said," smirks Mike.

The others just laugh and then Alyssa's eyes widen, "oh my god the race, it'll be starting soon, you should come," she says looking at Kevin.
"Of course I will," nods Kevin, "do you guys want to join us?"
"Attractive muscular men in nothing but swim trunks, tempting as that sounds, I think you two deserve some more time together," replies Mia.
"Mia," gasps Antonio scandalised.
"What everyone else gets an attractive muscled samurai, a girl gets to look," retorts Mia.
"We'll see you back at the house, it really was great to meet you Alyssa," smiles Evie.
"Yeah," nods Jayden and the others all wave as they head off, while Kevin and Alyssa hurry to the swim centre, arriving just as the race has begun.

"I need to be pool side, I'll see you after," smiles Alyssa leaning up and kissing his cheek before hurrying off and Kevin leans against the pillar to watch the race, cheering on his team, but then his gaze lands on Noah, and he can see he's cramping up again. This could cost them everything. Making yet another split-second decision he moves to the changing rooms and quickly switches to his swim trunks, cap and googles before moving up the pool side to Noah. Seeing the questioning glance from Alyssa he sends her a reassuring smile.
"Kevin, what are you doing?" asks Noah.
"You're really hurt," replies Kevin nodding to his leg.
"Yeah but…." Noah trails off.
"Don't worry, I got you," assures Kevin.
"Really?" asks Noah.
"Yeah, we're a team," nods Kevin.
Noah smiles as Kevin steps up to the board and the smile he gets from Alyssa makes him soar, he had this one in the bag and he leapt into the water as if he'd never left.

Afterwards Kevin smiled as he looked at Alyssa.
"I hate to go," she says.
"I hate that you have to, but like I said, e-mails, calls, video chat and maybe with some work, a visit too," replies Kevin.
"Stay safe," says Alyssa,
"I'll do my best," nods Kevin.
She sighs before leaning up and kissing him passionately, Kevin responding instantly, if it was going to be the last one in a while, he was going to make it count.

A little while later he was waving them off before he headed home.
Walking through the gates he finds Jayden, Ji and Evie sat together discussing things.
"Did Noah's team win?" asks Evie.
"They did, well, my team won," replies Kevin, "I'm so glad I finally got to say good bye to them."
"I hear not everything said was a goodbye," notes Ji.
Kevin glances at Jayden who just smiles, "as long as you're careful, and she doesn't tell anyone. Then you guys are good."
"Calls, e-mails and texts are fine, same with video chats. But visits will need to be limited," nods Ji.
"We'll be careful," assures Kevin, "and thank you for being so patient with me over this whole thing."
"Actually we only knew about the swimming and your team, the only two who were aware of Alyssa was Mia and Evie. And they played it quite close to the chest," replies Jayden.

Kevin looks at Evie in surprise.
"It wasn't my story to tell," she shrugs.
"Thank you," smiles Kevin, "and my loyalty is one hundred percent to this team."
"We never doubted it for a second," smiles Jayden.
"Alyssa get off okay?" asks Evie.
"Yeah she did," nods Kevin.
"Good, because something else happened today," says Ji.
"What?" asks Kevin.

"Deker is somehow back, and he wants the other half of Urumasa," explains Jayden.
"What, how is he back?" asks Kevin his eyes wide.
"Seems Urumasa breaking somehow took the hit for him. And he needs Urumasa to break the curse, and he and Dayu are working for Serrator now," explains Evie.
"Well that opens a whole new can of problems," says Kevin.
"Deker wants Urumasa, and if he's working for Serrator, a whole new can is an understatement," corrects Evie.
"We'll beat them, like we did before. And this time, screw Deker and his duel, he can't do it without Urumasa, and we won't let him duel you alone this time," assures Kevin.
"Damn straight," agrees Evie.
"Urumasa is safe in the house, no Nighlok can enter," nods Ji.
"Then Deker's already screwed," says Evie, "now back to happier things, Mia wants all the details and Mike does too. Plus, Antonio has someone else to live vicariously through now."
"Yeah have fun with that," nods Jayden.

Ji just rolls his eyes and shakes his head as they walk inside. Deker might be back, but not even that could dampen Kevin's happy mood. Right now, he felt like he could take on the world.
