A/N: Here we go, once again the next few chapters will be deviating from the series standard run for a couple chapters, but fear not we'll get back on track. More or less, enjoy :)
Chapter 20
Antonio smiles proudly as he walks into the kitchen, he'd managed to catch even more fish on his early morning trip.
"Ta-da," he beams.
Evie however goes green and gags as he sets them down next to her, "Get them out of here" she pleads.
"I know you don't like the heads but you can't even see it, and the smell isn't that bad" says Antonio.
Evie gags again and bolts from the stool dashing into the bathroom and throwing herself at the toilet as her breakfast makes a reappearance.
She feels someone pulling her hair back for her, but doesn't even bother to see who it is as she finishes emptying the contents of her stomach.
"Easy does it" soothes Mike.
Evie groans and sits back, "gross" she mutters.
Mike hits the flush and helps her up before Kevin hands her a glass of water.
Evie rinses out her mouth and spits it out before taking a drink.
"Small sips" advises Kevin gently.
"Guess it is the flu, god I hate throwing up" shudders Evie.
Kevin checks her forehead, "you do feel a little warm" he admits.
Mike studies her intently for a moment, he was now more convinced than ever about his theory, he just needed a chance to test it.
"Evie, what happened?" asks Jayden in concern as he appears at the door.
"Tell Antonio unless he wants me to shove those fish where the sun doesn't shine to keep them away from me until he has made them into dinner, or at least frozen or washed them so they no longer stink," answers Evie.
"Noted," nods Jayden.
"She's a little warm as well, looks like it was the flu," adds Kevin.
"Let's get you back to bed," says Jayden gently as he wraps his arm around Evie and guides her back to their room and settles her back in bed.
"I'll get some tea for you," he says as he sets a bowl down next to her.
"Thanks," she murmurs shutting her eyes.
Jayden returns to the kitchen and looks at the fish, "Okay from now on those do not come into the kitchen until you've prepped them."
"Or better yet stop bringing in so damn many," adds Mike.
"Sorry, I didn't realise it was effecting her that badly," apologises Antonio.
"Tell her later, right now she'll probably throw something at you," advises Kevin.
Mia and Emily walk in with Ji then.
"Morning" smiles Emily.
"We have an idea, we figured with everything that's been going on we could do with a day out, maybe a picnic, or the amusement park or something, even Ji said he'd come," explains Mia.
"Might not be the best idea, Evie just threw up," says Jayden.
"What why?" asks Ji.
Mike points to the fish.
"She asked him to move it, he didn't move it, next minute we were seeing her stomach contents," says Mike.
"Sorry," repeats Antonio.
"I'll go and check on her," says Ji as he heads up to Evie's room.
Jayden grabbing the tea and going with him.
They walk into the room and find Evie curled up in bed.
"Evie, how are you feeling?" ask Ji.
"I hating throwing up," she admits.
"We know," nods Jayden sitting down next to her and helping her sit up so he could hand her the tea while Ji checks her temperature.
"Looks like it is the flu, it would explain your symptoms," nods Ji after a few moments of checking her over.
"Yay," sighs Evie rubbing her eyes.
"Rest is the best thing I can prescribe, lots of fluids and stay warm," advises Ji.
"Mhm," nods Evie.
Ji walks back out and Evie sips her tea.
"Guess I'm missing more training," says Evie.
"No actually Mia and Em wanted to go out, but if you're not well we won't," assures Jayden.
"No you need to go, all of you, Ji included. I'll be fine, like Ji said, sleep and drink lots of water. Really don't let me spoil the fun," pleads Evie.
"Evie-" starts Jayden.
"No, go all of you, go out and have fun. Bring me back something sweet," orders Evie with as much force as she muster.
"Are you sure?" asks Jayden.
"I am, you know I hate being babied when I'm like this. Go, let me sleep and I'll be fine, some quiet is all I need," soothes Evie.
"Stop saying fine, you're clearly not" retorts Jayden.
"Go, the team needs this, you all got hit harder with that Nighloks mindscapes. Go, enjoy the sunshine, make Em and Mia's day," repeats Evie.
"You're a very good person," smiles Jayden kissing her forehead.
"Don't tell anyone," replies Evie as she puts her tea down.
Jayden smiles and walks out of the room shutting the door behind him.
Evie curls up and tries to ignore the churning in her gut that had nothing to do with her throwing up.
"Evie wants us to go out, she's not the nicest person when she's sick. And she says we deserve it," explains Jayden as he looks at the others.
"We can't leave her on her own," protests Mia.
"No what if she gets worse or something?" asks Emily.
"Tell you what, we draw straws, whoever gets the shortest stays with Evie," suggests Mike quickly.
"Okay," nods Ji.
They do so and Mike deliberately ensures that he draws the short straw.
"Go, we'll be fine, I think I can handle Evie," assures Mike.
"Call if anything changes," orders Jayden.
"Or if you need us," adds Ji.
"Not likely, go on," shoos Mike, "bring me back an ice cream or something," smiles Mike kissing Emily before she walks out and within twenty minutes they were gone.
Mike then grabs his samuraiser and heads out himself, he had something he needed to do.
Evie sips her water slowly, her mind swirling with so many thoughts she couldn't even organise. She just wanted some quiet time, alone. She'd gotten dressed in her comfy joggers and one of Jayden's shirts and was idly flipping through channels. Though she wasn't focusing on any of it.
She was surprised when there was a knock on her bedroom door about an hour later.
"Come in," she calls.
Mike walks in, "hey," he smiles.
"You're supposed to be with the others."
"No, we decided someone needed to stay with you," replies Mike.
"And you drew the short straw?" asks Evie.
"I made sure I drew the short straw," answers Mike.
Evie looks at him in confusion, "Why?"
Mike bites his lip, "Because we need to have a conversation, and I knew it wasn't one you would want anyone else hearing."
"What are you talking about?" asks Evie standing up.
In response Mike reaches into the bag he was holding and pulls out a box.
Evie looked at the box Mike pulled out of the bag, "You can't be serious?" she asks looking at him.
"I had this scare once, with my ex. She was dizzy, tired, feeling nauseous, and it turned out to be early symptoms of a very bad case of flu. If I'm wrong then I'm wrong, but E what if I'm not?" he asks.
"We're careful, I'm on the pill," reminds Evie.
"Yeah but let's not pretend you haven't had a couple of days where I am sure you've missed it with everything going on recently? And condoms aren't 100% effective either. No birth control is," points out Mike.
"I can't be pregnant," murmurs Evie.
"If you weren't starting to think this was a possibility Evie, you wouldn't be so resistant to taking this," replies Mike walking forwards and taking her hand, "you need to know, one way or the other."
Evie reaches up with a shaking hand and takes the box.
"I'll wait, if you want me too?" he offers.
Evie nods before walking into the bathroom, she takes a deep breath and pulls the test out of the box before locking the door from Jayden's room.
Once she was done, she set it on the side and opened the door and Mike set the timer.
Evie sits down on the bed next to him and Mike takes her hand, "Whatever it says, I'm here for you."
"No offence Mike, but you're not the guy I need to hear that from," admits Evie.
"I know," sighs Mike.
The timer goes off a few minutes later and Evie takes a deep breath and walks into the bathroom and picks up the test a choked sob escaping her when she saw the result, positive.
Evie stared at it willing it to change and when it didn't, she leaned back against the wall heavily. The blood started pounding in her ears, she could feel her heartbeat thumping in her chest, her hands shaking as the test fell from her hands. She tried to take a deep breath but found she couldn't. Bile rose in her throat as it felt like it was starting to close on her.
Suddenly Mike was in front of her, but he was distorted as if she was looking at him from far away and her legs gave out underneath her, she had no idea what was happening to her.
"Evie, Evie," says Mike catching her as her legs gave out. He looked her over and quickly recognised a panic attack, "Evie, okay Evie I need you to calm down, I am right here, you're having a panic attack," soothes Mike.
But Evie can't hear him over the roaring in her eyes.
Mike thinks back to what he knows about panic attacks and he remembers something, "sorry Jayden, sorry Em," he mutters before leaning forwards and kissing Evie.
She freezes under his lips and her breathing stops in surprise.
Mike pulls back and looks at her.
"Evie, can you hear me?" he asks gently.
Evie takes a sudden breath and nods slowly, "You kissed me" she murmurs blinking slowly.
"I remember reading that getting someone to hold their breath can help stop a panic attack, seemed the easiest way. Just take deep breaths Evie, okay, deep breaths," soothes Mike.
Evie does so and the roaring in her ears fades and her heart no longer feels like it's trying to thump its way out of her chest, but her hands were still shaking and her vision clears for a moment and her gaze lands on the test. And her eyes promptly fill with tears as she lets out a gasping sob.
Mike looks at the test and he sighs when he sees it, pulling Evie into his arms as she sobs against his chest.
"I'm sorry E," he murmurs.
Knowing he couldn't say anything to help and if he tried, he'd likely make it worse, Mike just opts to hold her as she continues to cry.
Eventually the sobs subside but she doesn't pull back, she was pregnant, and the fighting was only going to get worse. Master Xandred was becoming more of a threat every day, and she had gone and fucked up.
"Oh god I've screwed up so bad," she murmurs.
"Hey, it takes two to make a baby Evie, and you guys have taken every precaution. You just, got caught short," sighs Mike. "If anyone can figure this out and weather it, it is you and Jayden."
"We're supposed to protect the innocent, save the world and maybe make the ultimate sacrifice to do it. Jayden might, might if it came down to me or the world be able to sacrifice me then. But neither of us will be willing to do it to our child," says Evie. "And can you say you would?"
Mike shakes his head, "Of course not."
"There is one option," murmurs Evie.
Mike's eyes crease in confusion, then widen as he realises what she means and he pulls back so he's looking at her, "Okay that is not something you do lightly Evie, and sure as hell not something you do without talking to Jayden first."
"What other choice do I have?" asks Evie her voice sounding so defeated it broke Mike's heart.
"There has got to be another way Evie, no way that can be what you really want," replies Mike. "But none of this matters because I'm not the guy you need to be discussing this with, you need to talk to Jayden, Evie. This is his baby too, and you mean more to him than anything and I know that will extend to this baby. And you cannot make any decisions without him."
"If I tell Jayden I have to tell the others, I have to tell Ji, oh my god he's going to be so disappointed in me. He'll hate me," realises Evie breath coming out in short gasps.
"Wow, hey no, breath Evie, breath for me," orders Mike, "Come on breath with me, in and then out" he repeats as he mimics what he's saying and Evie copies him.
"Good, that good, keep doing that."
Evie does so and calms down again, "Ji could never hate you Evie, he loves you. You are like his child, you and Jayden both, you mean the world to him. He might be disappointed, he might get mad but he could never, ever hate you."
"You don't know that," counters Evie, "He made us swear this would never happen, I've ruined everything," adds Evie tears flooding her eyes again.
"You've ruined nothing, this was an accident. You did not mean for this to happen, you took every precaution possible to prevent this, and it takes two of you. This is not all on you," promises Mike.
Evie just looks down at the test, "Maybe it's a false positive."
"Do you really think that?"
Evie sighs and shakes her head, "No."
Mike nods, "Talk to Jayden, I won't say a word to anyone, not even Em" promises Mike. "When they come back, I'll grab Jayden for you."
Evie shakes her head, "No not here, not now."
"Evie-" starts Mike.
"No, not here. I can't tell him here. There's too much chance of us being overheard. Of someone interrupting, it needs to just be us," explains Evie grabbing his hands and Mike sees the panic rising in her again.
He sighs but nods, "Fine, tomorrow you and Jayden go for a drive or something, but you have to tell him Evie."
"I will, I just, I need to figure this out. I need to, to just process. And realise what a huge fuck up I've just got myself caught in," sighs Evie running her hand through her hair.
"Hey, no, this is not just you, remember that. And do not make any decisions until you have talked to Jayden. I will keep quiet for now, but don't ask me to hide this from Jayden," warns Mike.
"I'm not, and I won't. Tomorrow we'll go for a drive and talk. But tonight, I just, need to think okay," says Evie rubbing her eyes.
"Okay, then I'll keep quiet for tonight. And tomorrow you guys can talk," nods Mike.
Evie nods and slumps against the wall with a sigh running her hand through her hair.
"Whatever you decide to do, I'll back you," promises Mike.
Evie looks at him, "Thanks."
Mike squeezes her hand, "What are brothers for?"
Evie nods before she stands up and looks in the mirror.
"How puffy are my eyes?" she asks turning to Mike.
"I can tell you've been crying," admits Mike.
"It'll calm down in a couple of hours," says Evie as looks at the test and picks it up and sighs when she sees the positive, "It could be false" she says again.
Mike looks at her, "we both know it's not that. And deluding yourself isn't your style Evie, head on, weapon in hand."
"I don't have a weapon that will work on this Mike, I don't want to have to-" she finds she can't even get the word out.
"Abort it" finishes Mike quietly.
Evie nods and leans on the sink, "I don't know what else I can do."
"Talk to Jayden, decide, together. Because I love you like you are my sister E, but do not ask me to hide this fact from Jayden, especially not if you do intend to abort it. Don't ask me to keep that secret for you," pleads Mike.
"I'd never ask you to do that," promises Evie looking at him. "I'll talk to Jayden tomorrow, we'll, we'll figure things out, somehow," says Evie looking back down at the test.
"You need to get rid of that if you don't want to risk everyone finding out," notes Mike as he grabs the box from the side and hands it to her.
Evie nods and slides the test back inside before drawing a quick symbol and a moment later the box has disappeared.
"There, no evidence now," she says.
Mike nods, "You want some space?" he offers.
Evie runs her hand through her hair and nods, "Yeah."
Mike nods again and hugs her, "You can get through this, you and Jayden together."
"I hope you're right" admits Evie.
"You don't know how to fail" smiles Mike as he pulls back and walks out of the room.
Evie unlocks the door to Jayden's side and curls up on her bed, the shock of it all settling a little and Evie sighs resting her hand on her stomach, "What the fuck do I do next?" she asks.
A few hours later the others return and look at Mike sat on his own playing a game.
"Where's Evie?" asks Jayden.
"Headache, she's sleeping," replies Mike.
"Another one? God she must feel bad", says Mia.
Mike sighs, if only they knew, but he'd promised he'd keep his mouth shut and he meant it.
As the others filtered through Mike slipped up to Evie's room and stepped inside, he found her looking at her laptop, she pulls the screen down quickly but stops when she sees its him. And he can tell she's been crying again.
"They're home," he says quietly.
Evie nods and opens the laptop again.
Mike sits down next to her and as he reads the screen he sighs, "E-" he starts.
"I just, I needed to know, the, uh, the options," she says.
"You do not want this to be one of them I can already tell that much, if you do this when you don't want too, it'll haunt you for the rest of your life," says Mike gently.
Evie looks down as a tear slips down her cheeks, "I'm terrified Mike, I don't know what to do, this is something you're supposed to go to a mom about. But I can't, and I don't know what to do."
"You will figure this out, you and Jayden, and I will back whatever you decide," promises Mike.
"But even if I do have it, what if I'm like her, what if I'm as bad as my mom, I could screw this kid up like she did me?" asks Evie.
"You do not know how to fail, okay you deal with me, you take care of Emily, you bonded with Cody. You and Jayden are already like the mom and dad of this team, now it's just literally instead of figuratively," assures Mike, god he was the wrong guy for this, but he was doing his best not to put his foot in his mouth.
Evie hiccups again but nods.
"You got this, one way or the other, okay E, I have zero doubts about that. And just because your mom sucked, does not mean you will," promises Mike.
Evie sighs, "thank you" she says.
"Anything for my sister" smiles Mike squeezing her hand.
Evie smiles and wipes her eyes, "I'll tell him tomorrow and we can, we can go from there," she says taking a deep breath.
"Yes you can," nods Mike. "They think you have the flu, so you can play it off as that for now."
"Thank you, for everything Mike."
"Anytime" answers Mike before closing the web page, "And no more looking at that until you talk to Jayden."
Evie nods and closes her laptop, "I think I'm going to ask Jayden for some space tonight."
"He is pretty good at reading you."
"This isn't something he'd expect to have any reason to read," replies Evie guilt welling inside her.
"No, none of that. This is not just on you, do you hear me, Evie. It, takes, two," stipulates Mike, "Say it with me."
"It takes two," repeats Evie.
"Jayden loves you; you love him, you will figure this out, together."
Evie nods, "You're even more sensitive than I gave you credit for."
"Believe me, this is taking a lot of effort, I am literally running things through in my head like ten times before I say them out loud to you," admits Mike with a chuckle.
Evie smiles and sits up hugging him.
Mike hugs her back, "If anyone can do this, it is you," he murmurs before pulling back.
"I hope you're right," says Evie.
"I know I'm right," assures Mike.
Evie shakes her head and Mike nods before walking out and shutting the door behind him and he bumps into Jayden.
"I thought Evie was sleeping?" asks Jayden.
"Turns out she wasn't, just wanted to let her know she wasn't stuck with just me anymore," replies Mike quickly before walking away.
Jayden looks at him curiously before shaking his head and walking into Evie's room and finds her curled up on the bed definitely not looking well.
"Hey," he smiles walking over and sitting down next to her.
"Hi," she says.
"How you feeling?" he asks.
"Not the best, but less ill," answers Evie and she meant it, "Don't take this the wrong way, but would you mind sleeping in your room tonight?".
Jayden shakes his head, "Of course I wouldn't, whatever you need," he assures knowing Evie hated being crowded when she was sick, the couple of times he'd seen her sick.
"Thanks," she replies with a tight smile.
"We got you some sweets as promised," smiles Jayden pulling the bags out and handing them to her.
Evie smiles when she sees strawberry laces and instantly grabs one, devouring it in moments, "Thank you," she says.
"Anything for you," replies Jayden kissing her forehead, at least she didn't feel as warm as she had been earlier.
"I do feel better though," assures Evie.
"I'm glad, feel up for some food?" he asks.
"As long as Mia isn't cooking and it's not fish," replies Evie.
"I think we can arrange that," smiles Jayden. "Ji is making lasagne."
"Oh yummy," nods Evie and her stomach growls in response making both of them chuckle.
"Want some company?" asks Jayden.
Evie debates for a moment before nodding, right now she really just wanted to be held, even if Jayden didn't know why.
They curl up together and flip to an old episode of Greys Anatomy, Evie snuggling against Jayden. Though she quickly regrets the choice of episode when she realises it's the one where Callie finds out she's pregnant. And she finds herself silently praying Jayden is even half as okay as Mark is with it.
Evie tosses and turns in bed, her mind wouldn't shut off enough to let her sleep.
She looked at the clock and found it was two in the morning.
Sighing she gets out of bed, sliding on her slippers and a hoodie she walks out of her room and down to the kitchen to grab a drink.
"Couldn't sleep," comes a voice and Evie spins defensively only to relax when she saw Mike stood there holding up his hands, "Easy mama, just me" he says.
"Don't do that!" she snaps leaning against the counter. "Why are you awake you sleep like the dead?" asks Evie rubbing her eyes.
"I was, then I had a weird dream and I came out for a snack, wasn't surprised to see you lurking about either," replies Mike.
"I am not lurking," retorts Evie.
"Okay no I'm the lurker," admits Mike.
Evie nods and pours herself a glass of juice.
"Any more desire to throw up?" asks Mike.
Evie shakes her head, "Nope, think it might just be the fish."
"Well you were fine at dinner, so once its cooked its obviously not a problem which is good," notes Mike.
"You seem to have been paying close attention," says Evie.
"Look I am in very uncharted waters here, if you want me to back off, I'll back off. But I want to help, however I can."
"I hope Jayden feels the same way."
"He will, maybe once the initial shock wears off," replies Mike.
Evie lets out a snort, "Well at least if he has a panic attack I'll know how to stop it" she adds pointedly.
"Can we maybe never discuss that again?" pleads Mike.
"Agreed, no one else needs to know, it meant nothing," replies Evie.
"Not a thing" assures Mike, "I am very happy with my girlfriend."
"Let's hope my boyfriend still feels the same about me tomorrow," answers Evie rubbing her eyes.
Mike sighs and wraps his arm around her, "He will" promises Mike, "If not I'll kick his ass for you."
Evie chuckles, "Jayden could break you."
"I'd find a way" smiles Mike.
"Thanks," says Evie.
"Anytime" answers Mike.
"Now go and try to get some sleep, Jayden loves you, nothing will change that, this, this actually might make him love you more. Cause I'm pretty sure he's already pictured what your kids will look like."
"When they were an abstract idea, a thought for the future, after the Nighloks are dealt with. When Xandred is gone and we're living a normal life. Not now when we've got Deker hanging above us, Dayu doing god knows what, Serrator obviously playing his own game and Xandred and Octoroo still out to take over the world and flood us with the Sanzu River. But this, this is a flesh and blood tiny, helpless baby. And I'd be an incubator for the next however many months and at some point, I'm going to start to show that fact. This puts everyone and everything at risk, how can we justify that on, on one life. One tiny perfect mixture of Jayden and me," sighs Evie unable to keep the longing out of her voice as she thought about the idea of child with her hair and Jayden's eyes, or vice versa.
Mike looks at Evie, he could already tell how much she wanted this baby, that she was already falling in love with the idea of it. And out of everyone he knew, including Mia he could see Evie being a mom. Not just in an abstract form, but here and now as she was. She might only be a year older than him, but Evie was so much more mature than he was. Even more than Mia was, definitely more than Antonio. Sure she could act her age or younger, but other times it was so clear that she'd dealt with more than your average 20-year-old.
"You want this," he says quietly.
"I want this, but how selfish does that make me? How much like my mom am I, to even be entertaining the idea of risking the entire world for what I want?" asks Evie with a shiver.
"Talk to Jayden, and make a choice together. There has got to be a way, and if there is you will find it," promises Mike.
Evie just sighs and shakes her head, "we'll see," she replies, "night," she adds before walking back down to her room. As she shuts the door she leans against it her hand on her stomach, "I don't know what to do with you," she admits looking down at her stomach.
Unable to help herself she flicks on the light and moves to the mirror, rolling up her shirt she stands side on, studying her stomach.
It was a flat as ever, still toned from years of training, absolutely no hint there to anyone that there was a tiny baby growing in there.
Angrily Evie pushes the thought aside and pulls down her shirt, flicking off the light before she climbs back into bed, pulling Jayden's pillow into her arms.
A/N: Dun, dun, dun, well done if you figured out Evie was pregnant before this chapter, now settle in for the rollercoaster, lemme know what you think :)
Also totally aware kissing someone is not the best way to stop a panic attack, but hey Mike was in a hurry and I'm rewatching Teen Wolf right now.
