Chapter 38
Evie walked out of her room when she saw Alyssa heading towards.
"Hey, I just realised that I forgot my straighteners, any chance you have any?" asks Alyssa.
"Oh sure, I don't use them that often but they should still work," nods Evie as she leads Alyssa back into her room and starts rooting through draws.
"You're room is really nice by the way, got to say I kind of pictured something a little more, basic."
"Everyone does. But as I like to say, Ji wasn't raising robots, he was raising people."
"Yeah he didn't seem to know how to react to me."
Evie chuckles, "Ji isn't used to non-samurai in the house."
"Didn't you bring friends over, Kevin mentioned you did high school?"
"It's kind of hard to explain this place, I went to their places. Though since we left having the team arrive were the first people we'd have in a while," says Evie, "but I had Jayden."
"You two must've been pretty close, you know even before" smiles Alyssa.
"Before we became a couple," finishes Evie glancing at her.
"Yeah," nods Alyssa.
"We were, have been since we were 8. There is nobody in this universe I trust or love more."
"Well for the next however many months you've got, then you'll have someone new to love completely."
Evie sighs, "Supposedly."
Alyssa realises what she's said and winces, "Sorry I have no idea about being a mom or being pregnant, and I should not be making comments."
Evie turns and looks at her, "what did Kevin tell you about me?"
"How do you mean?"
"About my mom, you're obviously a smart person and Kevin said you were perceptive which means you probably noticed how tense Emily and Mia got when you mentioned moms. And there are pictures of me dotted around this house from the time I was 8, when you know neither Kevin nor anyone else arrived until far more recently. So, what did Kevin say?" r
"Just the basics about why you grew up here, and that you recently reconnected with her through a very complicated situation. And it might be causing a little anxiety" admits Alyssa. "He really didn't want to tell me, but I picked up on some stuff."
Evie nods and turns continuing to look through her draw.
"But for what it is worth, people with crappy moms, they can more often than not turn out to be amazing moms. I know that for a fact," says Alyssa.
Evie is unable to hold back the snort of disbelief.
Alyssa sighs before biting her lip "My mom was 17 when she realised, she was pregnant with me. She and my dad had been together since they were 15. They had zero support system, my mom's mom, she was abusive, a raging alcoholic. She never even knew her dad. And my dad was a foster kid. But they made it work, they were happy and my brother and I, we have a wonderful life, with a mom and dad who we would not trade for the world. Our parents both had shitty parents, but they've never been shitty parents. Because they know how it feels to be on the receiving end, and they made sure we never felt that. But you, you have even more than that, you have a support system. You have a house, you have your Mentor, you have your team, your family. And just because your mom was crappy, it doesn't make you more likely to be a crappy mom, it makes you even less likely to be a crappy mom. Because you will never want your kid to feel the way you felt," explains Alyssa.
Evie turns back to her, "Your mom was a good mom?"
"She was and still is the best, never missed a performance, never missed a science fair or an awards ceremony. Came to every graduation, was the person I turned to for everything I need. She made sure I never felt as alone as she did. And from what I've heard, you're already proving that you are going to be that kind of mother. Because you won't repeat your moms mistakes. I can't imagine how scary it must be to be pregnant, never mind in the situation you are currently in. But I don't think you need to worry about being a crappy mom," smiles Alyssa.
Evie looks at her for a moment and Alyssa thinks she might've overstepped until Evie gives her a small smile, "thank you."
Alyssa just nods.
"Here you go, you can use them in Kevin's room, or in here later if you want," says Evie holding out the straighteners.
Alyssa takes them, "in here if you wouldn't mind, your mirror and lighting is a little better," she answers a silent understanding passing between the two.
"Fair enough."
"Yeah, Kevin was never one for overly fussing over his appearance" chuckles Alyssa.
Jayden appears in the doorway then, "Ji's going to start dinner, you don't have any allergies or anything do you?" he asks looking at Alyssa.
"No, nothing."
"Great," smiles Jayden as he disappears out of the room.
"You bagged a good one there" says Alyssa.
"I am well aware" answers Evie as they head down to the living room where the others were gathering.
"Alright movie until dinner" says Mike.
"And Jayden gets to pick because it's his birthday," adds Antonio.
"Well in that case, we're watching RED," smiles Jayden.
They settle on the couch when Mia's phone goes, she picks it up her eyes widening as she reads the text, "No way."
"What?" asks Evie.
Wordlessly Mia hands her the phone and Evie reads it, "Holy shit," she whistles.
"What?" demands Emily.
"Jared and his friends are going to be at Alibi tonight as well," answers Evie.
"No," gasps Emily half crawling over Jayden to read the text, "Oh that is cute."
Hi, so just wanted to give you a heads up. My friends have decided they want to go out tonight and that means Alibi, I just wanted to assure you I am not trying to be a creepy stalker. And if you want you can totally ignore me, and pretend we've never met. But you know if not, then maybe save me a dance?
Jared x
"This is either insanely cute or insanely creepy," notes Evie.
"Would you like to sit here Em?" asks Jayden, given she was completely leaning over him.
"Wait what's this?" asks Alyssa.
"The guy Mia met, he's going to be out, tonight at the same place as us," explains Emily.
"Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, I need to rethink my outfit," decides Mia standing up.
"I'm down for that," says Emily as she goes to climbs over the back of the couch only for Mike to steady her, so she didn't fall.
"Alyssa you come too we might need another opinion," says Mia.
Evie turns to go as well and Jayden grabs her hand, "hey it's my birthday."
"I know baby, and I promise I'll make it up to you, but for now, girl code," she replies leaning down and kissing him before vaulting over the couch after the others leaving the four boys sat together confused.
"That just happened right?" asks Mike.
"It did," nods Jayden.
"Girls are weird," decides Antonio.
"Yup," agrees Kevin.
"Guess it's just us watching the movie," says Jayden as the four resettle and continue watching the movie.
"Okay so do you want to maybe go a little sexier maybe?" asks Evie as they all sit in Mia's room.
"I don't know, I mean should I? I don't want to look slutty or anything," says Mia.
"You can look sexy without being slutty. You don't need to have a skirt you can't sit down in or a top you're worried you're going to pop out of. You can be classy sexy," assures Alyssa.
"How exactly?"
"By accentuating what you have without flaunting it," answers Alyssa.
Evie smiles, "And I know how, where are those pants you wore for the concert because they made your legs and your ass look pretty good."
"Should I tell Jayden to be worried?" teases Mia.
"No, I meant that objectively not as someone interested in people of the same gender."
"Here they are," says Emily as she pulls them out.
"Now what are we doing for top and shoes?" asks Alyssa.
"Help yourself," replies Mia.
Alyssa starts to look through Mia's closet.
"Oh you can wear the shoes you borrowed from Evie," adds Emily.
"Perfect" nods Evie.
"They are really nice shoes," agrees Mia as she reaches under her bed and grabs the black peep toe pumps.
"Ah-ha, this, this is perfect" smiles Alyssa as she pulls out a top, "Backless is its own kind of sexy."
"Now that I can make work."
"Feel better now?" asks Evie.
"A bit, but I don't know I mean, it would be nice to see him again" admits Mia.
"Why don't you just see how it goes when you see him? Let it happen naturally as you like to say" notes Evie.
"Yeah, just see how it goes, be yourself and he'll love you," smiles Emily.
Half an hour later they're all sat down for dinner and Alyssa had to admit it was really, really good lasagne.
"Oh my god can I get your recipe for this, because this is fantastic," smiles Alyssa.
Ji smiles and Evie can just tell he's proud of the compliment.
"Family recipe I'm afraid," replies Ji.
"Fair enough," nods Alyssa.
"So you're not as diet mad as Kevin then?" asks Mike.
"No, I don't measure my breakfast out," chuckles Alyssa.
"Yeah has he always done that?" asks Antonio.
"Oh yeah, long as I've known him."
"Hey I have to stay in shape," protests Kevin.
"Which can be done without being quite so precise," replies Mike, "like me," he adds.
"Yet I can still kick your ass," retorts Kevin.
"Technique not lack of fitness," corrects Mike.
"And yet I can still beat the both of you," reminds Evie.
"That's because you're a freaking snake, seriously how do you twist the way you do?" asks Mike.
"Years of gymnastics, ballet and a natural flexibility," answers Evie with a smirk.
"How flexible we talking?" asks Alyssa.
"I had her, next thing I know, I'm on the floor she's in the perfect position to choke me out or snap my neck, with her thighs."
"Yeah, she's been perfected that one since we were 15," smiles Jayden.
"Well it's not fun to be on the receiving end."
"I'm aware, who do you think she spent most of her time practising it on?"
"Somehow, I doubt you complained about the up close and personal once things progressed" snorts Antonio.
Evie kicks him under the table and he groans, "Ouch okay sorry," he mutters.
They continue eating, trading stories before the girls decide to start getting ready, while the boys decide to play some video games first.
"Okay if anyone wants the shower, I have been informed I should tell you; I like it hot so check the temperature. Kevin whined like a little bitch last time," chuckles Evie.
"He can be a bit of a baby about temperature extremes, you should've seen how he was about the cold water when the pool heater malfunctioned, he squealed like a little girl," laughs Alyssa.
"Tell Mike that, it'll make his day," smiles Emily.
"He reminds me of my little brother Travis," admits Alyssa.
"You have a brother?" asks Mia.
"I do, he's 16," nods Alyssa.
"Mine too," says Mia.
"Really, how does it work for you guys with siblings?" asks Alyssa.
"The mantle usually goes to the firstborn, but in unique situations it goes to the next youngest. Like Em here," explains Mia with a smile.
"You've got an older sibling?" asks Alyssa.
"Yeah, Serena, she's 24, but she got sick, so it fell to me," explains Emily.
"Cool," nods Alyssa. "And the rest of you are only children?" she asks.
"Mhm, Mike and Antonio too."
"And your symbol power is hereditary, so you get it from your parent, does every child get it? Or is it like hair colour and can skip?"
"No, if you're the biological child of a samurai, it passes on to you no matter what. We don't give birth to squibs," replies Evie.
"Nice Harry Potter reference," smiles Alyssa.
Evie just laughs, "right since it is my shower I am going first."
"Copy that, we'll get everything else set up," nods Mia.
Evie smiled as she walked into the bathroom, this was going to be fun.
But as she turns on the water and takes off her clothes she stops and looks in the mirror, her gaze focusing on her stomach. Turning side on she studied it, she knew that she wasn't showing, all her clothes still fit. But she felt something was changing, she knew. She just hoped it was a while before anyone else did.
Evie stood in front of the mirror, turning to the side to see if you could note any difference in her figure in her outfit.
"You cannot tell you are pregnant Evie," assures Mia looking up from the other mirror where she was doing her make-up.
"No, you look as stunning as ever," agrees Emily as she pulls on her jacket.
"You're barely two months along Evie, Kat said you wouldn't start to show in any real way until your fourth month. That looks amazing on you," promises Mia walking over and resting her head on Evie's shoulder, "You are beautiful, and no one can tell you are pregnant."
"I just feel different."
The playsuit was black and made of a silky fabric that gave it a slight sheen. The shorts were fitted to her legs, but the top was looser with a high neckline. The sleeves came down to her elbows, and she'd paired it with a pair of black stiletto boots that stopped just below her knee. Her hair pulled back in a high ponytail, and one of her ancestors ornamental hair pins tucked into it.
"No one can tell, and you might just knock Jayden dead when he sees that outfit," smiles Alyssa as she slides on her shoes. She had on a purple dress with a v neckline and ruffles around the edge. A silver belt around her middle, a pair of silver gladiator sandals, a matching purple leather jacket and silver clutch. Her hair loose down her back.
"I think Mike might feel the same way when he sees you," smiles Mia as she looks at Emily who smiles.
"You think?" she asks.
"We know," assures Evie turning to look at Emily.
She had on a black skater dress with a big yellow belt, the leather jacket Evie had given her, and a pair of black ankle boots with a bright yellow purse. Her hair pulled up in a side ponytail resting on her shoulder.
"And Mia will have no shortage of admirers," adds Alyssa.
"Yeah if you'd been dressed like this yesterday Jared might've been too stunned to pull you out of the way," smiles Emily.
She had on a pink cowl necked halter top, her wet look leggings, the black pumps she'd borrowed from Evie, and her own leather jacket, with a pink clutch. Her hair also pulled up in a high ponytail.
"We'll knock 'em dead," smiles Mia as she puts her lip gloss into her clutch.
Evie looks in the mirror once more and wipes a small smudge from her blood red lipstick before grabbing her jacket and her bag, "then let's do this" she smiles.
Jayden was sat with Antonio, Kevin and Mike. As expected, Antonio had been the last to join them given, he'd still been perfecting his appearance as he put it.
The sound of heels on the wood alerts them to the girls arrival.
The four guys turn and their eyes widen.
"Wow," smiles Jayden when he sees Evie.
"Now that was the reaction I was hoping for," she smiles as she takes his hand, "you like?"
"I like," nods Jayden.
Evie leans up so her mouth his next to his ear, "you'll like what's under it even more" she murmurs.
"You're trying to kill me," mutters Jayden as he gives his girlfriend a side glance, he just knew she'd be attracted attention left, right and centre tonight. And he wasn't sure if it was the fact, she was pregnant, but he knew he was going to hate it even more than usual.
Evie just winks.
Mike however hadn't actually found the words as he looked at Emily. This was not her usual style, and he'd be lying if he said he was not loving it, a lot. The dress and boots made her legs look longer, and the dress was showing off just enough without being too risqué, and her make-up made her eyes stand out even more. And right now, they were sparkling with mischief that matched the smile on her lips.
"You all look really nice," says Kevin. "But you especially," he smiles taking Alyssa's hand.
"Glad you approve," smiles Alyssa.
"Stunning chicas," nods Antonio.
"Someone close Mike's mouth before he starts catching flies," smirks Mia.
Emily smiles and pushes his jaw closed, "you look nice."
"Thanks, you, you look, really good," Mike manages to stutter out.
"Was I ever that ineloquent?" asks Jayden quietly.
"Never that bad," assures Evie.
"Let's have some fun then," smiles Mia.
They all head outside and pile into the eight-seater that they'd conjured with their symbol power earlier as darkness began to fall around them.
"We all ready for this?" asks Mia eagerly.
"As long as the Nighlok don't interrupt, hell yeah, while I still look this good in these outfits," says Evie.
Jayden reaches over and takes her hand, "if anyone can make pregnancy look good, it'll be you."
"Oh, very smooth," nods Alyssa.
"He can be, when he chooses."
"Just remember, no traumatising tonight please," begs Antonio.
"You mean at the club, or later?" taunts Evie.
"Either," answers Antonio.
"Well I don't know, I mean Jayden will be drinking, I'm pregnant, so no promises," smirks Evie.
"Oh I definitely like you Evie," laughs Alyssa, "for people tasked with saving the world you're surprisingly normal."
"Well, I don't know if normal is quite the word we'd use" snorts Mike.
"Speak for yourself" retorts Kevin.
"Boys, let's not" interrupts Mia.
"Yeah no arguing tonight" agrees Emily leaning up and kissing Mike.
Mike returns it until Antonio clears his throat pointedly.
They break it and Mike flips off Antonio with a smirk.
"Stop it," orders Evie without having to turn around.
"Well their child is never getting away with anything," snorts Kevin.
"If it's a mini Evie, can you imagine?" asks Mike.
"Two of them, now that is a terrifying prospect," agrees Antonio.
"If she takes after her mother think how much trouble Jayden is going to have when she starts dating," smirks Mia.
"Or how much of a heartbreaker she might be," adds Emily.
"She of course could be a he, and a mini Jayden," says Kevin.
"Or a mix of them both," says Alyssa.
"Now that would be interesting," says Mia.
"Any idea yet Evie?" asks Emily.
"Nope" replies Evie, "it is like this big right now," she adds holding up her fingers to show how small her baby was.
"Well either way he or she is going to be adorable," smiles Alyssa.
The entire car winces.
"What?" asks Alyssa sensing the tension.
"Don't use that word, Evie bit the last person who did," warns Kevin quietly.
Alyssa's eyes widen and she nods, "sorry."
"We'll forgive you" assures Evie, "besides Kevin might have something to say about me biting you," she adds with a smirk.
"I'd have something to say about that," says Jayden.
"Who did she bite?" asks Alyssa quietly.
"Explain later," assures Kevin.
