One years ago, what happened before Ino's POV

He should have fought back, he really should have tried harder at least, but the moment Temari insisted on tackling him he froze and let her, even he didn't predict she'd get this physical. He knew the Sand unit would go after them when he and his team snuck in with the bombs to disrupt the suspected raid the Sand was planning on a nearby village, thankfully stopped by his unit before they reached the bridge into the town, just why did it have to be Temari to go after him and split him from Ino and Choji, that's right she never turned down the chance to challenge him, once that woman set her mind to something she didn't quit. Why did she insist on picking on him every time, she was worse than Ino when she got pissed. To add to his humiliation, she insisted on doing it in the worst way possible.

"Really it's like you didn't even try to fight back" Temari sighed crossing her arms no doubt disappointed at the Leaf commanders lack of interest in the fight. Her knees digging painfully into both his arms as she sat back on his chest, Shikamaru lying flat on his back under her, his color red and expression annoyed, possibly a bit embarrassed he'd been pinned down effortlessly by her, woman was stronger than he initially thought "it's insulting to turn down a challenge from your rival Shikamaru" She mocked glancing down at him with a crooked grin, pleased with herself, giving a new name for the feeling uncomfortable. Another note to add into the list of things Temari excelled at, she read his moves as he did hers, but this time his avoidance of battling was his downfall.

"You're the one who insisted on fighting me" he complained glaring back up at her, if he could shrink back into the ground he would have, the whole situation made him uneasy in every way possible. He avoided looking past her eyes as she loomed over him, teals capturing his as usual, it was harder to breath and not because she was sitting on him.

"Oh come on stop making excuses it's so unmanly" she scoffed and glanced up bringing a finger to her chin thoughtfully "you know you should really practice your hand to hand combat more, you're fast but not very good at dodging and you forgot to look behind you, always watch your back" his eyes narrowed tighter, to top off the situation, she was lecturing him like it was some kind of training session, adding to his humiliation at being taken down by her, she had just gotten to close to fast and he hesitated, he didn't know why but his nerves had gotten the best of him recently with her "you rely too much on your jutsu, it's becoming predictable and easy to avoid. Not very useful if someone's got your hands tied down now, is it?" she emphasized her point by shifting her weight on his arm forcing a sharp hiss at the ache.

"You're troublesome you know that?" he groaned and rolled his head back to scan the forest, where were Choji and Ino when you needed them, he hoped and dreaded their arrival, this would be a great conversation to have once they showed up, he thought sarcastically.

"Thanks" she chuckled lips pulling back into her infamous smirk, although still trapped under her, Temari leaned back enough for her knee to relieve some of the uncomfortable pressure to his sore arm, he would have been thankful for it had she not been readjusting as he spoke, unaware of her shift.

"Not a compliment" he muttered as he glanced back up at her, avoiding looking anywhere but her amused eyes, the effort to remain calm, suddenly becoming tougher as she leaned down towards him placing her hands at either side of his head, new level of discomfort unlocked, that being, her so close to his face.

"Taken down without even attempting to defend yourself, is it because I'm a woman?" she glared down forcing him to take interest in her ridicule.

"I figured I'd make it easier for you" he shot back hopeful to anger her off him, unfortunately she seemed ignorant of his efforts.

"I like a challenge, and you've been the only captain who's been worth battling against, so I'm not going to kill you just because its easy" she paused her eyes roaming down for a moment and back to his before smiling again, of course she'd enjoy embarrassing him even more. The mention of his worth would have boosted his ego, had she not been his enemy "not that you don't normally make it easy for me to have the upper hand"

"I've got more important things to think about that fighting with you" he muttered attempting to move an arm but only promoted in her knees digging in further, he bit back the urge to show any more pain to his expression and glared back at her "Can you get off me if you aren't going to kill me?"

"I'm pretty comfortable here" She leaned down further raising a brow teasing his efforts to pull back "what you worried someone might see us?"

"No just" his words interrupted, and he froze, their once routine matches with her changing in that moment, one he wasn't sure he'd ever be able to change back. She bent down past his cheek, lips just near his ear, her breath causing his eyes to widen and fists to clench. His really should have fought harder, but his thoughts failed him when she spoke.

"Aw Shikamaru do you feel uncomfortable with a woman sitting on you? Is that it? Or is it just because it's me?" with the gentle whisper leaving her lips, he worked harder than ever to focus his mind on forcing words out of his mouth, strained through a clenched jaw and a held breath.

"it's not that can" he shut his eyes feeling the tug of her lips as she no doubt smiled at his unease "can we just call this a win for you so you can get off me"

"Why do I make you nervous?" she pulled back enough to look past him at the tree line, turning her grin down to him while he composed anything to say back to her.

"I prefer you trying to kill me to this" somewhat easier spoken when she wasn't so close to him, still uneasy though as his racing heartbeat remained.

"Admit it you like me" she smiled wide at him, his eyes widening momentarily at the seemingly pleasant gesture.

"No" he grumbled attempting to pull his narrowed eyes away, but her hand gripped his chin forcing his attention back to her, adding to his frustration.

"Liar" she smirked and let him go, his cheeks a new shade of red "besides it's not like your fighting back anyways you're making this boring Shikamaru" she sat back up arms still on either side of him and scanned the forest line with a glare, sighing before glancing back down her head tilting slightly looking as if she was observing him "You know from this angle you look handsome" With an pleased giggle as his face fell at the statement, taken back, she pulled away and pushed off him to stand, in his hesitation, one hand raised to the fan on her back and threw the end down to his chest, inflicting a groan from him as his breath got knocked out, enough to bruise his chest he confirmed, woman wasn't very gentle after all "it was fun while it lasted huh Crybaby"

"Troublesome woman" he murmured and glared back at her smile turned down to him silencing any further efforts to him speaking, that or Ino's gasp as his team finally emerged from the forest.

Frustrating,

Cruel,

Loud,

Troublesome woman.

That's what she was, that's all she was, that's all he needed her to be to not think further, yet he did.

Beautiful,

Gentle,

Fierce,

A goddess

If he didn't know any better, he'd say he was sulking the moment she backed away, the goddess had tugged the lead once again, how troublesome. He took a second to ponder the term goddess for her and found it more than fitting, after all she'd more than proven to her people she fought for them. A woman adored and revered by many, all obeying under her touch, all stared under her gaze, all beamed at her rare gentle nature, hurt by the tragedies of the life she had been given and yet she found a smile in it all. Wrathful woman with an eloquent tongue, laughing in the face of her foe and without fear, ruthless by choice, but he saw through it having finally figured out his rival. One of the fiercest fighters he'd ever been against, his thoughts paused.

He was staring again.

The gentle night breeze brushing the pale green scarf, the one he gave, subtly away from its place, teals hidden under the gentle smile pulling at her lips, void of wrath a kind gesture, one to irresistible to look away from, but he did. Shutting his eyes, he inhaled to regain the scattered thoughts, like a shogi board knocked over he just had to rearrange the pieces to start a new game and ignore the embarrassed flush on his cheeks while he was at it. It happened to often and he seemingly didn't care to register that he shouldn't be watching her as he did, he wasn't allowed to, but who could care at the moment. He was possibly just too lazy to look away from her. Every report read about her and none of it seemed to come to mind as she turned to him seemingly pleased with his silence, her win over him essentially, but it was just the first move and now it was his turn.

"Come on Crybaby get up we can't be lazing around when we have things to prepare for tomorrow" she stretched her arm out eyes turned away, she was trusting he wouldn't do anything stupid, her mistake. Shikamaru opened his eyes turning a soft glare from her outstretched hand to her dimming smile as she turned back at his reluctance to move, she went to speak, ready to demand his full attention, but was interrupted with a shocked gasp as his hand gripped her wrist and pulled her down into him. She fell forward catching herself with her hands to his chest, his arms encircling her body as he leaned back laying flat on his back trapping her firmly as she struggled against his hold, pulling her head away from his chest to glare up at him. His eyes closed and completely ignoring her as she shouted, loud woman as usual "What are you doing? I thought I specifically said not to hug me" he silenced her with a tighter hold and a long sigh breaking her from her struggles for a brief moment.

"You're stubborn and it's annoying" his half-hearted taunt back to her causing another effort to push away, surprising herself at how hard it was, tensing under the hold she glared back at him, his face set peacefully void of any expression. A nap almost sounded appropriate if he didn't have an angry woman in his arms.

"Let me go" she warned quietly, he knew instantly she was blushing embarrassed, flustered, easier to read her now, still mad though.

"Not until you calm down" his hold tightened as another predicted wave of anger gave her strength, but he wasn't letting up, calm was a bad choice in words.

"I'll show you calm when I get up from here" her threat falling to deaf ears, he bit back a smile seeing how easy she'd made this for him, and to think he'd been the one giving up all these years. Reminded of the save from the bombing, the first embrace, the way she broke under a few soft moans, the lead pushing his way once again. Absentmindedly thinking he should have just done this four years ago, war would have stopped right then had he just talked his way through it, it would have been a drag, but he could have done it with minimal effort. He'd pay for this later, but for now he'd take him short win over her.

"If you can" he sighed, it was her fault to start it anyways.

"I hate you" his eyes opened lazily turning to hers, and he grinned faintly and with a sense of pride behind his next words

"Admit it you like me" smug and all knowing, releasing her now would be the death of him, yet he felt he needed to trust his gut and not hesitate.

"No" she scoffed, remembering her old taunt back at him, and forced her eyes away from his. The refusal for him to see her blush futile as he lifted them up to sit up, his arms loosening around her and dragging down cautiously before resting at her lower back. She turned back glaring at him, no doubt irritated at his control over the situation, but stilled the moment his fingers gently traced her jaw to her chin gripping lightly. The wide-eyed stare returned, much to his relief, he half expected to be knocked out by now, but she chose to remain still as he looked from her closing eyes to her parted lips.

"Liar" spoken as his lips brushed against hers and placed a tender kiss, his eyes closed patiently awaiting how she'd react, and did she ever.

He'd always hated war, the sights, the smell, the ideas of shinobi fighting to the death over stupid things such as land and a sense of pride, yet he somehow found a way to play an enormous part in it. She had shown him what war truly meant that first year, not just what you saw but what to feel in it, the same way Asuma showed him, and his father. When he fought against the next proposition of attacking a village for gaining territory, he'd been shunned at first, he simply refused to take orders to their eyes, it was a treasonous act after all, but Shikamaru was rational. They didn't seem to see it that way, innocent people died because they got caught up in the gain over the sacrifice, that didn't even blink an eye from the crowd. It wasn't until Tsunade stood at his side did the others feel the need to finally listen to his pleas, and they allowed him his own hold over the troops of his western command, to keep the peace. The three years following this had seen less lives lost, less refugees on both sides, and less attacks.

His opponent followed his lead unknowingly, seen only in the constant stalemates and retreats from both sides before things got out of hand, all this in the past two years, when she noticed his lack of interest in battle. It was as if she knew what he saw would change him, after all he was only a year into war when he saw, she had been in it since the day she was born. She still fought without remorse but seemed tamer, retraining from killing as often, when he would notice at least, and he thought he'd seen her relieved almost when a retreat would occur, but that was just his imagination, she always looked annoyed when he ran off.

She still taunted and teased and showed no mercy to anyone who gave her the wrong look, but it was four years into his position that he saw her truly different, from the moment she embraced the child, to his efforts to watch over her ensuring that things would never escalate further than a simple match between sides. She was unknowingly following his plans all along, to stop the war, then again maybe she had seen his reluctance to push forward and so she calmed her own efforts in a way, maybe she was as tired as he was. She wasn't to be trusted, and in a way he did, lying to himself every time he laid eyes on her unforgiving gaze.

The goddess was beaten but never broken, fair skin seen on the outside, but cracks hidden under the shield put over her. He was sure she secretly knew about his mission to protect her and although she tried to kill him, on many occasions, she never really seemed to have the heart to follow through as much as she tried to convince herself that it was for any other reason except restraint, putting on her show and leaving him in the dust when it was over. He had gotten tired of her need for control and in the past couple of years fought against it, almost pleased with himself to having the upper hand from time to time, she seemed to like it that way the challenge he proposed. She saw him as an equal, someone who could make something better of the future, though she still fought against it as if afraid to admit he was right.

If he didn't know any better, he'd say this is what love felt like, but right now he didn't know anything or honestly didn't care to think on it. He refused to lose her, and refused to acknowledge it, seemed like both of them were too stubborn to feel it. Enemy or not he couldn't let go of the notion that what lied ahead was better with them together rather than apart.

Who knew a single hug, a gentle kiss, and a few words spoken could change their minds to easily?

She could have gotten out of his hold, eventually, she could have beaten him for his boldness, she could have taken to her infamous throwing him off the cliff idea, but why she settled on pressing her lips against his, almost fervently, when he offered, she'd think on it later. She'd seen the way he'd figured her out, or tried to at least, you tend to get to know a person when you're trying to kill them, even better now that she'd adjusted herself back into his lap pressing against him, arms wrapped around his neck, fingers brushing the vest, the one that could possibly be an ally someday. The idea would have made her laugh, if it didn't make sense, but it did with what was to come, the inevitable end to a war fought over generations before them over something greater than resentment.

The thought of a new enemy quickly brushed aside as she pushed into him, her pace urging him to follow hers in her impatience to get closer, after all she wanted to finish her match from earlier, see how far it would go. His arms wrapped around her lower back so gentle as if he didn't quite know if he could, or should, press any further. She was always sure in her move made, even the rash ones, he patiently waited before starting his, mapping out all the possibilities. Absently she wondered who's win a game of shogi.

It irritated her, the first year of war, when he'd follow his orders down to the letters written on the reports from the village, she figured she'd have to kill him for it, he'd just turn out like all the others she had thought. The other captains did and now they were dead, because of their cruel offence and seemingly remorseless natures towards the innocent ones who fought back, ones they would never share with the villages people. She was smarter, fought harder, and killed without remorse to wrathful to stop herself, until he saw what she saw, that the battle wasn't among the innocent who suffered for it, but she knew he already saw that the moment he gave up.

The girl Kohana she would see her every few months, sneak away from camp and go to the town of Bara to spend a few hours with the people the ones that changed her mind her first year in the new war. When she first came there, she saw what her own people had done, cruel and merciless as she was, she hated herself for being a part of it, all this because of power. Children orphaned, mother's wails heard over their lost families, elders struck down in attempts to protect all because they were not her people. Baki had stopped it when she demanded, he had no choice as she was still honored as a royal of Suna, she fought against her own the moment she saw what they had been doing, yet only a few knew of her rage that day.

They passed on the message of her command and soon she led, she marched her troops, her people of Suna under the orders of her brother, even the council agreed with her change in nature, although kept a lead on her control over it. Gaara saw her will to fight fair and only strike her enemies not those who were in between, she saw how he changed after coming back from the Leaf from his defeat, and secretly thanked Naruto for it. He gave her his trust and she ran with it, Kankuro more than willing to follow at his sister's side, her brothers the only true family she had left. With her mother in her memories and her father's burning blood in her veins she won more than she failed. She was known as the Cruelest kunoichi of Suna, her enemies crushed under her wrath, her troops respected her and revered her as the goddess, Kaze no Megami because of it, yet she was gentle to a very select few, kind to some, and feared by many more. She wasn't about to trust him even if he saw it her way, besides he might have been the only man to fight fair against her, no wonder she liked him, possibly something more if he gave her a reason.

Funny how a single embrace, a soft kiss, and a few taunts could change their minds.

Planning something and actually doing something seemed to be two sides of the same coin, he could predict hundreds of outcomes, one being her sudden impatient, but all he could actually do was follow her lead. As lazy as he was, he excelled in many things, when he actually put the effort into doing them, and being taken down by her seemed to be a place he shined in, much to his annoyance. Reminded by the way she had pushed back earlier taking pleasure in making him nervous in the tent, that was until he pushed back at a slower pace causing her to become flustered and break down. It was clear she wanted to see how far he'd go, how far she could push him before he fell off the ledge before he gave up, always the ledges with this woman.

He was hesitant to place his hands anywhere at first, knowing she could still change her mind a get mad about earlier, but seeing he'd been able to remain arms loosely wrapped around her back, without receiving her wrath, he felt it more than appropriate to pull her into him, at least hoping. Breaking away from her lips to her surprise at the loss of contact, and pushing past the scarf with no hesitation, and just as eagerly as she was, press his lips to her neck wasting no time to finish what he had started. She gasped quietly leaning her head back to give him more room, lips parted panting as the soft moans began his slow pace forgotten. His hands dragging firmly down her back grinding her into him, each move as sure as hers, feeling her arm press against his chest and another wrap around his neck holding him in place it seemed.

When her chest pressed against his, he stilled his movements panting against her neck, how she had already undone the vest, he was unsure he didn't even feel her zip it down, the nerves seemed to come back. Shikamaru didn't even need to look to know she had begun to smile, his eyes narrowed and opened cautiously as he pulled back seeing the hooded teals turned down to him. Temari tilted her head forward giving him a full view of the taunting smile. Her hands firmly pushing him back into the ground as she loomed over him, intimidating as she was, he continued his glare back up at her, attempting to read into what she was doing. The feeling of danger rising over him as her hand slowly dragged up his chest to his shoulder and without an ounce of remorse, seeing as she lost her smile, gripped the stinging gash from last night. Biting back a groan he attempted to remain still and rushed a hand to his shoulder, to stop the pain, while she sat back on her knees off of him, crossing her arms tightly as he glared back at her.

"What was that for?" his anger hidden behind a harsh whisper.

"For making me look bad earlier during the meeting" Temari tightened her eyes, his involuntary annoyed groan making him roll his head back in defeat, he'd almost forgotten about that "Told you I was unforgiving" She leaned over him hands placed at either side of his head, forcing his attention back, and grinned down seemingly more pleasant and somewhat amused "Plus you seem to excited, so I had to stop that too" He would have asked what she meant, but with his pain subsiding he realized, with great embarrassment, his body had reacted to her grind earlier only building more into his current discomfort. Rising to stand and thoughtfully walking out of his reach, Temari glanced back only to come witness to him quickly sitting and drawing his knees up with a long inhale to steady his breath "At least I know you like me" She chuckled slipping her fan onto her back and returning, smug in her next words "Not that I didn't already know that"

"You're not helping" groaning he shut his eyes, attempting to still his thoughts, his mistake this time. Her steps so silent, he barely registered her touch until she had grabbed his cheeks firmly and turned him to her, his eyes widening as she placed a gentle kiss and just as she came, she pulled back grinning amused at his annoyed look.

"Don't take too long lazy we have things to do" a softly spoken command, when she turned back to walk down the path towards camp, he stared his face relaxed and with a sigh stood following. The shogi game once again knocked over.

Don't hate XD

you loved it admit it hahahahha
