Episode 1: born of life.
An emptiness moved as she fell the air around her as the wind pushed past her long pure white hair fell upwards. Her black skirts twisted as she reached out at the sky her gold eyes held a gentleness that could almost be mistaken for kindness. She wore a sweater under a long red coat making her seem even more mature. Her blonde hair in a braid twisted.
As she fell she landed on the ground her body was like a weapon from an isiki anime that destroyed the earth beneath it.
As she got up. Her eyes widened in shock as she saw the floor she waved her hand in the air before landing and realizing she landed from the top of a bed but she was pretty sure this wasn't her bed or room.
In fact, it looked way too old finished. She got up and looked at her body. She had long blonde hair that went up to her waist, pure white skin ruby red lips, and an old fashion dress that was black as a raven's feather.
In fact, she looked fairly young 8 maybe 9 even. She flexed her hand as she looked around a woman came up to her. One that looked oddly like Taila.
"Sweety, what are you doing? Go back to bed." Marissa coughed a little she felt ill. Taila looked sad and picked her up. "I need to convince my father to let you in the pit. I don't want to lose you."
As she said that she felt the girl close her eyes trying to breathe and in that instant, she ran to get father.
-After the incident 4 years later
After what happened with the Lazarus pit she had refused to speak. In fact, she had been as quiet as a mouse; the darkness within her shifted with her fears she was 12 now going on 13. The training was hard but she had made a decision at that moment.
She got up and ran to the boat and drove off to Gotham. Her heart was pounding with each moment she got closer. Her hair had turned as white as snow when they used the Lazarus pit and it made her able to regenerate to an extreme extent even on the verge of death her body would fix itself. The only good thing was that she was aging and she could feel pain. But that didn't change her own pain. She could take other's injuries and heal herself but that didn't stop it from hurting.
She stopped the boat at the dock. After getting off, she started walking around looking for a clue to where her father was.
She looked at the area hearing voices she checked it out to see a few people being attacked. A giant clay monster was doing battle against a group of people in hero clothes.
One was a young man wearing a black shirt with what she recognized from pictures as the symbol of Superman; he even looked kind of like him. The second was a young girl with green skin and red hair wearing an outfit that resembled the Martian Manhunter. The third was a young boy in blue armor that made him look like a bug. One seemed to be shifting animal forms during the fight. She also saw a boy in a red uniform with the letter R on it; Robin. The last, she could barely make out, but it was certainly a young lady with shrinking technology in a bee-themed costume.
She ran off into the fight using the shadows around her. Slashing at the creature.
"Nice shot!" The Superboy said. "Uh, who did that?"
She said nothing as she vanished into the shadows and went at him several times at the mucky-like creature. She covered her mouth with a black cloth, her blue eyes starring at them.
"Girl, get back! I have something to stop him!" Robin called as he leaped into the air and threw a capsule into the monster's mouth.
The monsters at first laughed. However, he soon felt strange and started to harden until he was a statue.
Said girl tilted her head. Then looked at the team and made an energy taking any injuries from them and healing quickly. She delved into the shadows.
"Wait! Don't go!" Miss Martian called.
The inky blackness seemed to move like a shadow on the run. She appeared a bit away, Miss Martian following after her.
"You were a big help tonight. Maybe there can be a place for you with us," Miss Martian offered.
Robin followed as well and asked, "What's your name?"
She didn't speak, she just made a letter in the air to ask: real or code. Real is Marissa code is Shade. She stopped in place looking at them.
"Okay, Marissa, what brings you to Gotham?" Robin asked.
She made a looking-for dad massage. Looking for Wayne Manor dads there.
Robin looked surprised. And then he pressed his ear and said, "Robin to Cave, Clayface has been neutralized. Also, Nightwing, you should come to Gotham."
[I'll be right over, Robin] said a voice on the other end.
"Shade, I know the way," said Robin. "I'll take you there."
She nodded, keeping her scarf up. She followed him, her mind on the place in general.
"Miss Martian, you and the squad can head back. I'll take care of Marissa," said Robin.
"Are you sure?" Miss Martian asked.
"Yeah. She just wants to meet her dad," said Robin.
Marissa tilted her head. She wondered if they didn't trust her and thought she was a threat.
"Okay," said Miss Martian. "See you next time."
After Miss Martian left, Robin looked at the new girl and said, "Sorry if we seem untrusting. We've had experience with a mole or two. An old friend was programmed to be one and didn't know it. Before that, another guy was tricked by the Joker."
She made a circle then in the air wrote. 'You mean Jason Red Hood in the shadows?' She tilted her head.
"Actually, I mean a teacher in Happy Harbor," said Robin. And then he blinked. "Wait. Say that again."
'I mean I didn't say it I mimed it, You mean Jason Red Hood in the shadows?' She wrote in the air and looked confused.
"Jason is the same name as my predecessor, Jason Todd," said Robin.
'Yeah that's him but Red Hood now goes they used the pit to revive. From what I heard.' She made a bunch of gestures.
"We'll talk more at home. Bruce will wanna hear this," said Robin.
"Hear what?" asked a young man wearing a mask over his eyes and a form-fitting black suit with a bluebird on the chest.
She tilted her head. 'Is the son of dad too?' She made hand gestures.
The young man looked surprised. "You're Bruce's daughter?" He asked. "You're our sister?"
She nodded making signs. 'Biologically yes I am your sister.'
Nightwing held out his hand and said, "I'm Richard Grayson. Call me Dick. And that's Tim Drake."
She took his hand and shook it. She smiled.
"I thought we were supposed to be cautious," Robin whispered to Nightwing.
"She's the one who needs someone to trust," said Nightwing. "Besides, she clearly already knows plenty."
"Right," said Robin. "Let's go home, Marissa. Bruce is definitely there by now."
She walked with them then Robin thought of something. "Why is your hair white?"
She froze in place her eyes looked traumatized. She signed. 'It was blonde then I got sick and I was then put into the pit. It turned white afterward.' She held her head trembling when she remembered the pain and shock.
"Oh. I'm sorry," said Nightwing. He immediately gave her a hug.
She calmed to the touch. It was so gentle it made her happy. Once she was released she made a sign. 'Thank you.'
"You're welcome," said Nightwing. And then he took her hand. "Let's meet your dad."
She walked with him. The girl seemed so fragile yet stronger at the same time. Nightwing imagined when she said pit she meant Lazarus pit. Her mother must be Talia Al Ghul...
-Wayne Manor-
The boys took Marissa home and were greeted upon entering through the Batcave by Bruce Wayne himself.
"Bruce, this is Marissa. She's Talia Al Ghul's daughter….. yours too," said Dick.
She waved.
Bruce looked closely at her. After examining her face, Bruce smiled and said, "Hello, honey."
"So you believe her?" Tim asked.
"Yes," said Bruce. "I remember Talia and I having a night together thirteen years ago. If we had a child then, this is the age the child would be. I could confirm with a test, but the features don't lie. Her eyes, her chin, even her earlobes."
She held out her arm. Bruce shrugged and took a bit with a syringe. He also took some of his own. He noticed the needle hole healed instantly once it was removed. He went into the Batcave with Alfred and the kids and experimented with the samples. After the test was done, Bruce revealed the results.
"Positive parent and child match," said Bruce. "Marissa, you are, indeed, my daughter."
She nodded. Making air signs. 'Yes, I just wanted Tim to see.'
"Sorry for doubting you," said Tim.
"You're still learning, it's fine," said Dick.
"If you don't mind my asking, is there a reason you sign?" Alfred asked.
'I stopped talking after the pit... I think I can but I don't know if it's trauma or something else.' She signed, looking sadly at him.
"It's okay. We'll help you," said Bruce while hugging his newfound daughter.
Marissa smiled happily at him. Making a sign for thank you.
"You're welcome, sweetie," said Bruce. "Welcome home."
She took a moment and pointed I Tim. 'Age?'
"I'm 15," said Tim.
She smiled pointing to both Tim and Dick. Then signed. 'Both older brothers.'
"That's right," said Dick, smiling. "Say, has your birthday passed yet?"
She shook her head. 'She made a sign that said 6 days will be my b-day.'
"Then you'll need a cake," said Tim with a smile. "Won't it be nice to spend your birthday with your dad and brothers?"
She nodded. She hugged them both.
"I like having a little sister already," said Tim.
The girl made a small shadow person and made another. The two little shadow people were tossing a tiny shadow baseball. She gestured as if to say look what I can do.
"That's amazing!" Bruce happily said as Alfred and the boys watched in amazement.
"You have quite a unique talent," said Alfred.
"How long have you been able to do this?" Bruce asked with interest.
She signed. 'Since I was dipped in the pit I'm also not able to die because of it and take others injured or damaged anything onto myself except my body regenerates and their body is completely healed. Theoretically, I could even take scars and they disappear in moments or destroy anything and regenerate them on myself and heal the other.'
Bruce took her hand and said, "That all sounds amazing. And we'll help you practice with them if need be. But first, I think you could use some dinner."
"I'll make another spot at the table," said Alfred as he left. "I do hope you like steak."
She nodded but frowned. She signed. 'When I take wounds I feel the pain I feel every assault. It doesn't last long but it's ten times worse.' She sighed slightly.
Bruce immediately took her shoulders and said, "I will never let anyone hurt you."
She took that in. She was surprised by this but nodded. She walked with them to eat with her family. Alfred served her a plate of steak and potatoes.
She ate happily enjoying the food that was made it tasted extremely good. The meat was so juicy and the potatoes nicely seasoned.
"I'm glad you like it," said Alfred. "Try to save room for dessert. I made cookies."
Marissa signed, 'So good.'
That was when Tim remembered. "Bruce, Marissa saw Jason….. alive."
Marissa nodded. Bruce dropped his fork when he heard that. "You did?" He asked her in shock.
Marissa nodded.
"Where?" Bruce asked.
'Infinity Island.'
Bruce clenched his fists. "So Ra's has him," he said. "Thank you, Marissa. Now we need to make a plan."
"You're planning on going there?!" Dick asked fearfully.
"I lost him once, I won't lose him again," Bruce said. "Marissa, I need you to stay here with Tim and Alfred."
She looked concerned. 'Do you know the way?' She signed.
"I do," said Bruce.
She got up. 'Coming.'
"Out of the question," said Bruce. "I'm not putting you at risk."
'I lived there.' She signed. She gave a calm look. 'I know the place way better.'
"And, by coming, you're risking your own freedom," said Bruce. "After everything you did to escape, I can't let you fall into their hands again."
She frowned looking down. But she gave him a look that said I need to come.
"I don't think she's backing down," said Tim.
Bruce sighed and said, "Alright. But you're to stay close at all times."
She nodded, going to get a rope to tie her waist to it.
"First, we need to make a plan," said Bruce.
Dick then had his finger on his ear. He blinked in shock. "Whoa, whoa, slow down, Batgirl. You're not making sense. What?!" Dick said. "Okay. We'll meet up at the Watchtower. Nightwing out."
"Everything okay, bro?" Tim asked.
"The Team's beta squad went to help secretary-general Tseng and…… well…. It got really weird," said Dick. Bruce looked at him as if to ask him to continue. "Well, some intergalactic bounty hunter attacked Tseng and ripped him open."
"What?!" Tim asked in shock.
"But it wasn't him. It was a robot controlled by some small alien," said Dick. "I hate to say this, but Jason may have to wait."
She made a sign. 'Or and hear me out you two deal with that and I can get father-daughter time.'
"Wait. You wanna go to Infinity Island with only Batman?" Dick asked.
"It might be our only chance to save Jason," said Bruce. And then he patted Marissa on the back. "Besides, I see her point about father-daughter time."
'Plus if it helps I can give some information if need be.'
Dick nodded and said, "Okay. Thanks, little sister."
She wrote some stuff down and handed it to them. Dick read the paper carefully. It talked about the Light and a few things with locations and items to find.
"This is very helpful," said Dick. "Tim, we'll meet with the Team. Bruce, we'll let them know you'll be busy."
"You got it," said Tim.
Dick seemed to be thinking about something. Marissa grabbed his sleeve, pulling a little.
"Huh?" Dick asked. "Oh. Sorry. I was lost in thought."
'What about?' She signed, looking confused.
"Were you thinking about Kaldur again?" Tim asked in concern.
"It's just that….. he was my friend. One of my best friends," said Dick in a sad tone. "I still don't know if I believe it."
She gave him a look, a very dubious one, as if she knew something. 'Honestly, I thought you were thinking about me being a great info person.'
"You are," said Dick. "It's just that…."
"Dick didn't take it well when Kaldur joined his father," said Tim, looking away. "He goes by the name Black Manta."
She squinted, looking at Dick suspiciously. She had met Kaldur. 'I met him.' She signed.
"You did?" Dick asked in surprise. "Did he hurt you?"
Marissa shook her head and signed, 'We were supposed to work together and I didn't wanna be near Death Stroke.'
"Death Stroke?" Bruce asked. And then he became suspicious. "What did he do to you?"
'Yes, he's a pedophile. I stabbed him.'
Everyone was shocked. Bruce immediately pulled her into a hug.
"You poor girl," he said.
She made several signs remembering how creepy he was and stabbing him when he got too close to her but she didn't remember what happened afterwards. 'It's fine he only touched me in inappropriate ways why I stabbed him when he wished to work further with me.'
"Since Kaldur was brought up, it's safe to assume he discovered what happened," said Tim. "Wait. Oh, God! He didn't rat you out, did he?!"
'Don't know what happened to him after I stabbed him Kaldur may have told my mother or grandfather but no clue.'
"Death Stroke won't ever touch you again," Bruce declared.
She tilted her head but nodded. She didn't even know if he was alive or not. If he was she wasn't sure how her mother would feel if she found out.
"How about you take your mind off of such a horrid memory?" Alfred suggested as he gave her a glass of milk and some chocolate chip cookies.
She took a sip and took a bite smiling happily. She smiled while drinking and taking a bite looking very comfortable. She finished and signed. 'Thank you very much.'
"You are very welcome," said Alfred. "Master Bruce, I think this young lady should go to bed soon."
'But Infinity Island.' She signed and she looked freaked out as if she was gonna be left behind.
"We're going together. I promise," said Bruce. "Tonight you need rest."
She pouted she grabbed his hand. Then she signed. 'Did they sleep this time when they were my age?'
"When I was your age, I was patrolling the city with him as Robin," said Dick. "Tim was kinda the same."
She crossed her arms staring at Bruce. Then signed. 'I'll sleep after we get home.'
"Stubborn, aren't you?" Bruce asked.
'I get it from you.' She signed with a smile Bruce sighed.
-Infinity island-
Marissa walked with Bruce as Batman. Shade the name she used well walking in her scarf covering her mouth.
'You're sure this is where you saw him?' Batman signed.
'Yes he's here. Red Hood over his face.' Marissa signed she looked around then saw the Cassandra aka Orphan training with Shiva. shade looked nervous. 'Let's try to avoid them.'
Batman nodded and looked around with binoculars for anyone with a red hood on. He found someone like that. It was definitely a young male, not much younger than Dick. He had a mask over his face and a red hood over the top of his head. He pointed him out and signed the question if it was him.
She held the rope tied to her and handed it to him. Then pointed to him and nodded.
Batman nodded and looked over at Red Hood. He understood what she was saying immediately.
She pointed to his head and then to hers as if to say remove his damaged mind and let her ability fix her own afterward.
Batman looked nervous about the idea as he remembered her pain.
Shade seemed to know how he was thinking and decided to make a gesture that said she'll be ok. She walked over carefully and used energy in her hand. Her head hurt a lot but after a bit it her mind repaired itself.
Red Hood turned around in shock with all the memories returned.
"Br-Bruce?" Red Hood said silently.
"Shh," Batman said after he revealed himself to the boy. "I've come to bring you home, son."
Shade signed. 'Don't say no please, I know how you feel but it's not his fault.' She hugged him in a moment she was pushed away as if scared. She signed. 'Sorry….please come.'
"I-I-" Jason said nervously. "Bruce….. you're….. you're here….."
"Yes. I'm here," said Batman as he took his hand. "It'll be okay now. Let's go home."
Jason was stunned as he removed his mask. He looked up at his father figure and teared up. And then he nodded and gripped his hand.
"That's right," said Batman, smiling as he helped Marissa as well.
She was happy only to be interrupted. Both Shiva and Orphan. Marissa got defensive. Making a shadow blade in hand.
"You're not going anywhere," said Shiva.
"I'm taking my kids home," said Batman.
She looked to Orphan as Shiva went at Batman and Orphan went after her. Shade kept sword to sword with Orphan as she made an energy again aiming for orphans throat and face taking the scars and them disappearing just as quickly.
'You can speak now.' Marissa signed before evading another hit from the blade and Shiva was trying to hit Bruce Jason joined punching the woman.
"Mo…..ther….." she said, making Shiva stop in her tracks.
Shiva turned around slowly and looked at her daughter in shock. "How did you say that?"
"I….. just did," said Orphan.
Shiva glared at Marissa in fury. "She's to be the perfect assassin. Silent, focused, and now look at what you've done. I need to mute her again."
"But…. But I like my voice…." Orphan said.
Now Shiva was more angry. "You what?" Shiva asked. "Cassandra, we are assassins. I've taught you what it means to be a true assassin, living in the shadows."
"Then why not mute yourself?" Orphan asked as she backed up.
"Because it's my job to make great assassin's greater," said Shiva. "You have the potential to be perfect."
"What if she doesn't want to be an assassin?" Batman asked.
Shiva glared again only for Marissa to make a shadow wave knocking her back.
Marissa signed. 'Fuck you she deserves to speak. I'll do it as many times as I wish I don't care how it feels for me. So leave her voice alone.'
Shiva got up punching Batman and charging at Marissa who blocked the sword and her cheek was cut blood dripping from her cheek only for it to seal up. "As long as I'm in her life I make her decisions. And she needs to be mute." Shiva was turning to mute her daughter again only for a shadowy sword to pierce her chest right were her heart was.
Shade stared at the blood pooling from her shock of what she just did sent a chill up her spine. The woman went limp and shade made the sword disappear. She made the energy trying to take the wound but it wasn't working the wound disappeared but the heart wasn't beating. she pounded on the woman's chest trying to make it beat. It wasn't working.
Tears ran down her cheek the blood from the former cut mixed with it as the young shade looked at her bloody hands.
Orphan took her hand and said, "You must go home. It's not safe."
"For you either," said Batman to Orphan.
"Safe for now. Come when I'm ready I need to cover for you." Orphan pointed to Shade. "She needs you more."
"Okay," said as he picked up Shade. "I'll see you when the time is right, Cassandra."
"Good luck," said Orphan as Batman left with his kids.
At Wayne mannor
Marissa looked to be still in shock and fear. Her mind in shock, her panic forged forward.
"We're here, sis," said Tim as he held her hand.
"What exactly happened?" Dick asked in concern.
"She used her powers to restore Jason. And then she gave Lady Shiva's daughter the ability to talk," Bruce explained. "Shiva didn't like that and attacked us. During the fight Shiva went to slice her daughter's vocal cords again so Marissa rected, Marissa killed her."
"Oh my god," said Dick in shock. "Poor Marissa."
"She tried to save Shiva but Shiva's heart wouldn't start afterwards." Bruce forwned.
"She will need your support. As will Jason," said Alfred.
Bruce nodded looking at them both. Marissa looked traumatized she was shaken and her eyes looked dead. Honestly he couldn't blame her. She definitely didn't mean to kill Shiva but she did want to stop her from harming Orphan. Probably her training was an influence.
Jason looked around the place to see what changed. He stopped in front of his picture and stared at it.
"You guys made this in my memory?" Jason asked.
"Of course we did. You're our family." Tim smiled at him he looked at Marissa. "We'll do anything for each other."
Jason took the picture and looked at it. "All this time, I thought I had no family. And now….. I remember my family, both blood and bond," he said. "And it looks like the family grew in my absence."
"Yes," said Bruce. "Tim became Robin in honor of you and Dick. And Marissa….. Marissa is my biological daughter. If it weren't for her, I never would've known that you were brought back."
Jason clutched his head. And then he let go and said, "I wasn't just missing….. I was legit dead. That's why you didn't come to the island at first."
"Yes," said Bruce. And then he hugged him. "I'm so sorry."
Jason took a deep breath. "I understand. I'm not good. I've done a lot of things but I can deal with the mental trauma she looks like she's gonna kill over."
"Just remember, you'll have us too," Bruce reminded him.
Jason nodded. "I know." He looked away.
"Welcome home, Jason," said Bruce with a smile.
"Yeah I'm gonna go to bed and try to relax." He left towards the door and went to sleep.
After Jason left, Bruce said, "I'm going to do my best for him."
Dick nodded looking over at the girl. "Now let's deal with this."
Bruce looked at Marissa and said, "Marissa?"
She seemed to respond.
"How are you doing, honey?" Bruce asked her.
"I… I don't know.."
Bruce looked shocked. "Marissa, you talked," he said.
She just seemed too shocked by the events to think.
"You have a beautiful voice," Bruce praised her.
She just nodded still in horror and shock. "I don't know I killed someone, I killed someone."
Bruce hugged her and said, "It's alright. It's alright. I saw what happened, you were defending the girl. And you're a good person, I know this because bad people don't feel bad for doing bad things. And Shiva didn't feel bad about harming her own daughter."
"I know but I just didn't want to harm her, I just wanted to stop her." She held her head.
"I know," said Bruce. "I'm not gonna pretend that the pain will magically go away, but I will help you. Both you and Jason are my children."
She nodded. "I'm ready for bed."
Bruce picked her up and carried her to her new bedroom. He tucked her in and gave her a kiss on the forehead.
"Goodnight, Marissa," said Bruce.
The next day
She got up going over to the drawer and crying a little, still extremely stressed by the events of yesterday. She got dressed.
"It never feels any better," said Jason, who happened to be up early. "My advice, make sure this kill is your last."
She signed. 'This was my first. I've never… I know I stabbed Death Stroke but I think he's alive. But yeah you're right.'
"I just….. really don't want you to be like me," said Jason.
She sighed before she signed. 'It's not your fault.'
"You know, I heard you talk last night. You have a nice voice," said Jason.
She signed. 'I know but after everything I tried talking but my brain won't let me for some reason.'
Jason approached her and gave her a hug. "I'm not sure how good I am at this, but I'll do my best," said Jason.
She made hand signs saying. 'You're fine you're a good hugger.'
"I'm pretty new to this big bro stuff. Glad to know I'm off to a good start," said Jason.
Marissa smiled slightly and it felt good to this. It was strange but nice. 'Yeah.' She signed.
"Hey, do you like omelets?" Jason asked her.
She nodded with a smile. 'I like sausage and broccoli in it.'
Jason smiled and said, "I'll make you a special omelet recipe I learned from my mom. I'll even add your twist."
She smiled and nodded happily. She walked with Jason and then they went to the kitchen and watched him make the food. The others of the bat family came down. She signed hi.
"Good morning," said Dick.
"How did you two sleep?" Bruce asked.
"Not bad," Jason admitted. "Though it was weird seeing my old room empty."
"Oh. Sorry," said Bruce. "A year after we lost you we put everything in the attic. And by the time we got you home there was no time to put everything back in order. But we can fix that later."
"Thanks, Bruce," said Jason, giving a small smile. And then he glanced at Marissa. "Her room, I'm thinking maybe a makeover is in order."
"We'll do that while we're out clothes shopping," said Dick. "Barbara's coming along for that since she's a girl."
"You're with Barbara?" Jason asked. "I thought you were dating Zatanna."
Dick rubbed his arm. "Not anymore," he said. "It didn't work out."
"Oh. Sorry," said Jason.
"It's okay," said Dick.
"Uh, Alfred, mind me using the stove? I want to make Marissa a special breakfast," said Jason.
"I don't mind at all," Alfred said with a smile and stepped aside.
Marissa opened her mouth trying over and over to speak. She poked at her throat trying to force herself to speak. "Ah...he..thank you."
They looked at her.
"Try..trying to get my mind to-to push past my trauma and trying to speak."
"Take it easy. Don't force it," said Bruce.
She took that and sighed. "Ok."
"Here's your omelet," said Jason as he served her a plate. "Sausage and broccoli just like you asked."
"Thank you…" she said in a gentle tone. Bruce sighed, seeming happy she was speaking but worried she was pushing it. She ate looking really happy. "Really good…"
"Thanks," said Jason. "Remember what Bruce said, no pushing."
"Alright." She said taking a deep breath, she would slowly gain her strength and speak better.
"Since you're taking Marissa shopping, mind if I redecorate a little too?" Jason asked.
Bruce smiled. "No problem. When Barbara gets here we will need to explain some things."
"Like the elephant in the room?" Tim asked.
"Is he talking about me or that?" Jason asked while pointing at himself and a big stuffed elephant. "What is that anyway?"
"That was mine from when I was younger," said Dick. "I thought Marissa could use something to hug."
She signed 'cute.' She went over and picked it up and huge it.
"You kinda forget she's Taila's when she's like this." Tim remarked adoring his cute little sister.
"She's Bruce's too," said Dick, smiling.
"Yeah but she's adorable." Tim remarked, pointing to them and signing.
'Can I come with you on missions?'
"You wanna go on missions?" Dick asked. "Gee, I don't know."
'Are you afraid they won't trust me?' She signed, she looked at him concerned.
"No, it's not that," said Dick. "I just don't want you doing anything too overwhelming. I'm trying to keep both of you whelmed."
"That's still not a word," said Jason.
'I'm calm. I want to help. I have abilities and training that aren't helpful for normal life.' She signed looking at Dick with puppy dog eyes.
"Okay. You can come," he said. "You can come. I'll take you to the Cave and we'll put you on a squad. You can come too if you want, Jason."
"Uh sure why not." Jason rubbed his neck. "Though I'd advise not telling them about her mom. Or who I was formally."
"You're right," said Dick. He smiled at him. "Welcome back, brother."
She looked excited. "Yes. Yes."
"We'll go after you and Barb get back from shopping," said Dick.
She nodded. She actually looked forward to spending the day out with her family.
In the meantime, Jason went through his boxes and started picking out what he wanted back in his room. He was pleased to find everything was saved. He paused when he pulled out a photo of a couple and a little boy. He remembered this photo, it was himself and his parents before he lost them.
"I can't believe Bruce kept this….. all of this," said Jason.
'You're surprised? He loves you he was probably devastated when you died.' She signed. died,' Marissa signed.
"I guess I was starting to worry that he'd forgotten about me," said Jason as he gathered up a box of his stuff.
Marissa shook her head and signed, 'No. He could never forget you.' and then she picked up a box.
"Thanks, sis," said Jason as they left.
She nodded with a smile happily. After they put down the boxes and Jason got the last one, the siblings started putting everything in its rightful place. Jason smiled as he looked at his room now. Now it looked like how he remembered. That was when Dick entered with a pretty girl with long red hair.
"Jason, you remember Barbara," said Dick.
"Naturally," he said. Barbara was currently staring at him. "I'm not a zombie, just so you know."
"Yeah, I know. It's just…. Wow, this is a lot to process," she said. "How are you gonna explain this to the public? To the Team?"
"We'll handle that later," said Dick. And then he brought his sister. "She needs clothes. She has some, but could use some more outfits."
Barbara smiled at the girl. "Hi," she said. "I'm Barbara. Of course, on the Team, I'm called Batgirl."
She signed. 'Hello I'm Marissa I'm Taila's and Bruce's daughter.'
"Dick told me about you," said Barbara. "Though, you seem different from Talia."
She tilted her head. 'I'm not her, I don't know why that would matter.' Marissa signed.
"It's just nice to see," said Barbara. "Now, let's go shopping for some pretty clothes. And how about we pick out some stuff for your room?"
She nodded, smiling happily at her. She couldn't wait to get some stuff. She signed. 'Sounds great.'
"Mind if I come along?" Jason asked while holding up a shirt from the box. "I think I'm starting to get too big for my stuff."
"Good call," said Dick. "Let's go."
They walked off as they got into the car and played with the earrings on her ears.
"Those are pretty," said Barbara.
'Thank you.' She signed as she waited for them.
They all got into Dick's car and he drove them to the stores. They started with clothing stores and got both Marissa and Jason some new outfits.
She had Barbara help her out picking out cute dresses and other clothing. She tried out a t-shirt and skirt and some jeans.
"You look so cute!" Barbara happily said.
"Thank you." She said in a gentle tone. She looked at the other clothing.
"That outfit is so you," said Jason.
Marissa smiled happily. After trying on a few more outfits, Marissa finally had a full wardrobe. Jason had plenty of options as well. Their next stop was a furniture store.
This one had lots of interesting stuff. Marissa stopped at one point to look at a canopy bed.
"Pretty." Marissa smiled happily. She enjoyed the cool items and her smile was pure as day.
"Excuse me," Dick said as he found a sales clerk. "My sister likes this one."
She smiled happily at him. The employee went over and got it boxed up. Dick then filled out the form to get it delivered along with the other furniture.
Marissa smiled happily and looked for some cool stuff. As she was picking out items, her eyes landed on a table lamp that looked like a cat.
"It's so cute!" she happily said.
"You like it, huh?" Dick asked.
"Yeah." Marissa smiled happily.
"Get it then," said Barbara.
"Let's get it." Marissa said in a gentle tone.
"If she's getting that one, I wanna get this one," said Jason as he held up a red lamp. "It's my color, don't you think?"
"It's really good."
"Okay, Jason," said Dick, who put the lamps in their cart. They next looked at some posters for the rooms.
"These look good." One was for a fantasy movie about a dragon girl, and the other was of the Justice League.
"Good choices," said Barbara as they got them.
Marissa smiled happily. She really liked this. As they left the store, Marissa saw a pet store and was drawn to the cute animals.
Marissa smiled, staring at them with a wanting look.
"Okay. Let's go in," said Dick as they went inside.
"Take a look and see if you find someone," said Jason.
Marissa smiled happily. She looked around for a bit. All of the animals were so cute and beautiful, and then something caught her eye. It was a kitten.
"Mew," she said.
"So cute." Marissa said In wonder.
"It looks like she likes you," said a woman who worked there.
"Uh…. yeah I think so." Marissa said nervously. Unsure about whether it was ok she liked the cat or not.
"I think Bruce would understand if you want to adopt her," said Dick.
She opened her eyes with cute eyes.
Dick nodded and said, "We'd like to adopt this kitty."
"Okay. We also have some supplies on sale this week," said the woman. "We have litter boxes, litter, scratching posts, food, treats, and even toys."
"Really thank you." Marissa smiled happily and enjoyed herself.
"I'll take care of paying," said Dick. "You pick out stuff for the kitty."
Marissa smiled happily at him. Picking up stuff for the kitty. She even grabbed a cute carrier. Dick paid for everything and Marissa happily left with her new pet.
Marissa smiled happily at her new friend, the cat smiled happily.
Once they got home, Marissa immediately started playing with her new cat. Bruce saw the cat and smiled.
"Are you gonna introduce me to your new friend?" He asked.
"Angel." Marissa said in a calm tone. She walked over to the others and took Jason's hand. "Brother, I know you've been through a lot but I wanted to say if you wanna talk you can come to me."
Jason smiled at her and said, "Thank you, sister."
She walked over and hugged him. Jason froze for a moment and then hugged her back. Angel mewed and cuddled Jason's leg until he picked her up and hugged her too. The hug made the kitten purr.
Marissa smiled happily at him.
"I never thought I'd like having a sister this much," said Jason.
"I like having you as a brother too." She
with a smile.
"Your bed's ready!" Dick called.
Marissa smiled. "Yes!"
"My turn to tuck our sister in," Jason said.
"Alright." Dick remarked.
home
Marissa was asleep as Jason, Dick, and Bruce talked.
"The league asked if I was ok with sending a substitute. They believe it's a bad idea for Marissa to be left without me."
Dick looked at Jason and then stood up. "I'll go as Batman. Jason, you stay behind as Nightwing."
"Wait! You're gonna stand trial on another planet pretending to be Bruce?!" Jason asked in shock.
"Batman committed crimes under the control of Vandal Savage," Bruce asked. "Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Hawk Woman, and Martian Manhunter did the same. With all that we did, we have no choice. I intended to join the Leaguers that were leaving, but the arrival of my long lost daughter complicated matters."
"But Batman has to be present," said Dick. "I can pass for him enough, but the Team needs Nightwing and Marissa needs her father and brothers. And, Jason, you're the one I trust to be her brother and Nightwing."
"Dick, that's not needed, we already have a substitute." Bruce explained in a calm tone.
Marissa spoke up. "They won't be found innocent. That place runs on money."
Bruce and the boys looked surprised. "What are you doing up?" Bruce asked her.
"I had a nightmare about the pool." She said, wiping away her own tears.
Bruce immediately hugged her and said, "We're right here. Now, tell us everything."
"I was with mom again. I was in her arms as she was running and then she pushed me under. I was screaming telling her "It hurt'' and "my body felt like it was burning" then I woke up." She cried into her father's chest.
"It's alright. You're not going back there," said Bruce as he hugged her. "You're here now. You have a home full of love and a family that loves you."
"That's right," said Jason. "I completely understand what you're going through. I'm here for you, and so are Dick, Tim, Alfred, and Bruce."
She smiled. "Thank you."
"Now, as for Rimbor, the Justice League has to set an example," said Bruce. "It's not just one planet, it's a portion of the Galaxy that doesn't trust us. This kind of thing also affects the Green Lantern Corps ability to do good."
"I know about them. But they're a money group. If they want trust they buy it if others want trust they pay for it it's the most corrupt place."
"So, you're saying that the judges or whatever were likely already bribed," Dick deduced.
"Yes. It's a losing battle."
"Unless we get the evidence and an offer they can't refuse," said Bruce.
"No as I said they're still corrupt proving anything won't make a difference…..but the shadows were working with a group they might be able to help." Marissa remembered something.
"A group?" Dick asked.
"They aren't a huge fan of the Light but they were willing to work with the Shadows."
"I remember them. Vaguely," said Jason.
"They're called Atlas. Usually they require something to help but they are usually big on not killing or removing heroes," Marissa explained.
"Are you sure this is the way?" Bruce asked. "The League's main goal is to prove our innocence. Are you sure this won't simply worsen the situation?"
"I know a lot. My mother trained me to know these places. And this is a losing battle without influence and money and Atlas has both all over."
Bruce and the boys thought about it, and then seemed to agree on something.
"Alright. We'll go along with it," said Bruce. "But we still need to know why. They must've had an endgame."
"My best guess is to attract someone and gain something." Marissa guessed. " I remember some plans like getting Luthor in charge pass laws to keep heroes in the dark but how they do that I have no clue.
"Sadly, knowing and proving it are different things," said Bruce. "But, I believe we can get the proof and prevent Lex Luthor from gaining that power."
"We'll worry about that later," said Dick. "The Team's upcoming mission is by far one of their most important one yet."
"Right. The satellite," said Bruce.
"Satellite?" Jason asked.
"The Earth/Mars communication satellite is to be launched. And the Team is going to protect it," said Dick. "This mission is so important that I even called Artemis out of retirement."
"Would you like me to help?" Marissa asked in a curious tone.
"I don't know. I mean, this mission could be dangerous," said Dick.
"I'll be with her," said Jason.
"Two Robin's might be confusing," said Dick.
"Tim is Robin, call me Red Hood," Jason said in determination.
"Your Shadow name?" Bruce asked. "Are you sure?"
"It just feels right," said Jason. "And I think it's time to see if Red Hood can be on the side of the angels."
Marissa nodeed. "Shade too."
Bruce seemed to understand their points and said, "Alright. However, as Team leader, Dick, it's your call."
Dick was silent at first, and then he said, "We'll get your new suits ready and then I'll bring you to the Team."
"Ok." Shade smiled happily.
"It'll be great to get out on the field again," said Jason with a grin.
Marissa took a moment. "Great, we can do this."
-Cave; mission day-
The Team gathered together as Nightwing stood before them. He had told them earlier that he had big news, and they were eager to find out what it was.
"Team, I have two announcements. First, I would to welcome Artemis back and thank her for agreeing to take part in this mission," said Nightwing as he gestured to a blonde girl in green holding a bow and arrows. "Second, I would like to welcome two new members. Please welcome Red Hood and Shade."
The Team looked surprised by the presence of these two new arrivals. One was a male, a bit older than Robin, dressed as a ninja with a red hood and a red mask on his face. The other was a girl with silver hair in black wearing a black ninja mask over her face.
"Never heard of them," said Wonder Girl.
"They're Batman's pupils," said Robin. "And you've actually heard of Red Hood. He was Robin right before me."
Now everyone looked really shocked. Beast Boy rubbed his eyes and blinked at him.
"You're Robin 2?! Now way!" He exclaimed. And then he looked at Shade. "Does that make you Batgirl 2?"
Shade blinked and shook her head. Making a hand sign that she signed. 'Not Batgirl 2 I'm Shade.'
"For those who don't know sign language, she's not a substitute Batgirl, she is Shade," said Nightwing. "Our top priority is the satellite. This communication satellite is Earth's first ever direct link to Mars. Bearing this in mind, you can see why some people might have a problem with it and try to stop the launch."
"Which is why Nightwing asked for the best people for this mission," Artemis added. "Myself included."
She signed. 'Understood, miss Artemis.'
"But we're on this mission too, which we're also the best," said Red Hood.
She signed. 'Pride before the fall.'
"I didn't mean it that way, Shade," he said.
She laughed quietly.
"Bottom line, they're perfect for this mission," said Nightwing.
"Aren't you worried Red Hood might be rusty?" Superboy asked.
Shade signed. 'can't be rusty if you never stopped.'
"What?" Artemis asked.
"She said-" Red Hood started, but was stopped.
"I read her hand signs. I just don't know what she meant by that," said Artemis.
"Right," said Nightwing. "That's kind of a shocker."
Shade shrugged.
"I think we should start out honest," said Red Hood. "We both just came from the League of Shadows."
Shade smacked her forehead.
"You come up with an explanation for how I'm alive," said Red Hood.
"They're Shadows?" Lagoon Boy asked suspiciously.
"I was resurrected by a Laserus pit and lost my mind," said Red Hood.
She signed. 'He had no memories. I fixed it.'
"And she was abused by them," said Red Hood. "She ran away and returned to her family who loves her."
Miss Martian looked into his mind and said, "He's telling the truth. She came from the island, but she's not a true shadow."
She glared under her mask.
"That may be only his point of view." Lagoon Boy remarked.
"They're my family," said Nightwing in defense. "I trust them both.
"Then Shade shouldn't have a problem letting Miss M see then."
"L'gann!" Miss Martian shouted.
Shade looked very uncomfortable then signed. 'If I'm gonna be treated like this I can go home. And she had no right to look in Jason's mind without permission.'
"Just trying to be cautious," said Miss Martian.
She crossed her arms.
"I agree with her," said Superboy, looking sternly at Miss Martian. "It's not right to poke through people's heads without consent."
"Don't worry, Shade, you and Red Hood aren't even stationed with her or Lagoon Boy," said Nightwing.
'I don't trust her. If she's willing to do that, how am I supposed to work with her?' she signed.
"I've known Miss Martian since the Team was founded. I know her," said Nightwing.
"Nightwing, you know why she feels like this." Red Hood said in a calm tone.
"Right," said Nightwing, frowning as he remembered how she was. The nightmares she endured. "Miss Martian, Shade makes a good point. You know full well you're not to do that without permission. For the mission you're only to use your telepathy for our communication link unless you are giving permission otherwise. Am I clear?"
"Yes, Nightwing," said Miss Martian, though not thrilled from being scolded.
"Good," said Nightwing. "Now, first, two of the Leaguers are expected to appear at a press conference before the launch. It would be beneficial to use Superman and Martian Manhunter, however….."
"They're currently off world," said Superboy.
Shade made a sign to Nightwing. 'got the contact for after the mission.'
Nightwing nodded at her. "A plan is in the works to get them back. But, for right now, we must create the illusion that Superman is still on Earth. That's where you and Miss Martian come in Superboy. You two will pose as Miss Martian's uncle and your brother."
Superboy frowned at the idea. "First of all, I'm pretty sure we're not that identical, even in the same costume. Second of all, you know I hate those things."
"Only way to keep the public from knowing the truth. That Superman was arrested," said Nightwing. "And You'll be hovering in the air with Miss Martian's telekinesis, she'll be doing the talking. No one can really tell from a distance."
She signed. 'You'll be fine.'
Superboy smiled and nodded. "Thanks, Shade," he said. "For Shadow that ran away, you're pretty nice."
"That's why she left them," said Nightwing. "Well, that and she hated that life."
She looked like she was having a bad flashback. The memory's of the pit Deathstroke and the death she caused. She walked over to the others.
"Shade? Are you okay?" Robin asked in concern.
'No but I'll be ok.'
"If you'd rather sit this out, I understand," said Nightwing in understanding.
She signed. 'I'll be fine bad memories.'
"Okay," said Nightwing. "Red Hood, stay with her at all times."
Red Hood nodded looking over to the girl. They walked off with the others after that. As they took off for the mission, Red Hood was thankful that his mask covered his entire face.
"I look ridiculous," said Superboy, now dressed like Superman.
Shade looked concerned. He looked at her brother and continued to prepare for the system.
"He's not wrong," said Red Hood. "It's taking a lot to not laugh right now. Connor in that, this is so wrong."
'I don't know. You know they meet me before my face is just covered.' Shade signed.
"Don't worry about that," Red Hood. "You just focus on showing them what you can do."
She nodded with a smile. Once they arrived at Cape Canaveral, Miss Martian opened the hatch and let then let Nightwing, Artemis, Lagoon Boy, Red Hood, and Shade out to get ready.
Nightwing had Lagoon Boy go into the ocean and Artemis, Red Hood, Shade, and himself in the launch tower. Miss Martian and Superboy left to attend the press conference. Nightwing loaned Shade his phone to watch the coverage.
She watched with interest as Miss Martian, in the form of Martian Manhunter, standing next to the woman in charge of the project, Carol Ferris.
Shade used the darkness to hide. To watch from afar. She frowned at G. Gordon Godfrey.
"Forgive me for not drinking the space cola, Miss Ferris," he said. "Given all that has happened, why do you feel the need to open our lines of communication to aliens?"
"There are many other worlds out there, but Earth and Mars are warmed by the same sun," Miss Ferris said. "They're not aliens, they're our nextdoor neighbors."
"So that's your plan, borrow a cup of Martian sugar while we're being invaded?" Godfrey asked the camera sarcastically
Shade so wanted to say something.
"If I may," said Miss Martian. "This is the reason why now more than ever we must be able to communicate with one another."
Another woman came over one with long blue hair, silver eyes and fair skin. "Hello if I may add my input." The woman smiled.
"Okay," said Miss Ferris. "And you are?"
"Hello I'm from Atlas. I'm Miss Lilly Loyal. I'm a advocate for gifted students and we at Atlas work to keep our future safe." The woman took the spotlight.
"And this has what to do with the satellite launch?" Godfrey asked. "Or the alien invasion?"
"A lot. Some of the children in my care are Martians who have been subjugated by the racism on Mars. Oh wait you didn't know did you, since you are also a racist, Mr. Godfrey." Lily remarked.
Everyone gasped and Godfrey looked like a deer in the headlights. He then cleared his throat and regained his composure.
"Despite my comments, you just admitted Mars has issues with racism," Godfrey pointed out.
"So does America. The kkk oh and a lot of other groups that are still here today are very racist. That's why we allow them to be safe here so they don't have to experience that. Well you seem to judge things up front instead of question what's happening in the back. If aliens came through the front door that must feel safe to you. But maybe it's better to look in the backside of how others act."
Godfrey had no reply to that. Miss Martian, on the other hand, spoke up as her uncle.
"I do not wish to withhold important facts," she said. "Yes, my planet does have an issue with racism. However, not all people of Mars share the same view. A member of my own family actually has a spouse who is quite different from our family and I support this relative's choice. I keep specifics to a minimum for their privacy. Most of all, I do not see the satellite as a miracle solution but a stepping stone to a better tomorrow."
"See Godfrey you bringing such questions does not bring the truth kindness and understanding and allowing them to speak for themselves does. We are required to keep this world safe but to prosecute our neighbors those in this universe will not help."
"Thank you so much for your support in the project, Miss Loyal," said Miss Ferris with a smile.
"You're welcome. Feel free to ask me any time you need me to bring Mr. Godfrey down a peg." Lilly took a seat.
"I don't mean to be rude, but I must be off. The launch is due to start soon and Miss Ferris must return to her station," said Miss Martian as she flew off.
Lilly looked to Godfrey as if to say not a word. And, of course, he was too stunned to say anything. Cat Grant simply took charge.
"And there you have it. Support from the Martian Manhunter and a member of Atlas. This launch is becoming a major big deal," said Cat. "Miss Loyal, you mentioned that some of the kids in your care are Martians. My only question is, am I right to assume they're all watching right now?"
"Yes. They're wonderful kids." Lilly happily said. "When they heard about the satellite, they couldn't wait for it to be ready."
"That's wonderful," said Cat. "Would you like to say hello to them? We're live."
"I'd Love to. Hello, my wonderful children. I hope you watch and enjoy today with this lovely lady here speaking." She gestured to Cat.
"Oh, you're too kind," said Cat, blushing. "Get ready, kids, you're about to witness history."
Red Hood appeared next to Shade and said, "This is why we can't take any chances. I'm gonna take a look at the inside of the rocket. You never if someone snuck something on there before today."
She signed. 'That's the atlus leader she can't die.'
"Makes sense why she's here," said Red Hood.
'She was the group I said before.'
"Yeah. I remember," said Red Hood.
'Be careful not to trust her. They may work with us but she's dangerous.'
"Don't worry about that. I don't trust so easily," said Red Hood. "Now, you keep to the shadows for now. I'm going inside the rocket."
She nodded signing be careful.
"I will," said Red Hood as he went inside the ship.
'Link established,' Miss Martian's voice said after everyone felt an odd sensation.
'Whoa. Forgot how weird that felt,' said Red Hood.
'Don't like this.' shade remarked.
'It's our safest method. Radios can be hacked or scrambled,' said Nightwing.
'her voice is very pretty though.' Miss Martian remarked.
'Just remember to only use this link for communication, not mind poking,' said Red Hood. 'Whoa. Got something here.'
'What is it?' Nightwing asked.
'It's a bomb,' said Red Hood. 'It looks like Black Manta's work. Probably has an altitude sensor.'
'makes sense.' shade remarked walking over to the side looking for anything.
'Then that could mean Kaldur isn't far behind,' said Nightwing. 'Lagoon Boy, keep an eye out under water.'
'I gotcha,' Lagoon Boy said, clearly annoyed. 'Hey, Superboy, don't do anything I wouldn't do.'
'Like what, stuff my face with crab cakes?' Superboy asked.
'I was expressing appreciation for my Angel Fish's cooking,' Lagoon Boy said in defense.
'You two don't work well together no offense.' Shade remarked. 'you seem like the backup guy.'
'I think you mean rebound guy,' said Superboy.
'I heard that!' Miss Martian said.
'You were supposed to also both work.'
'L'gann is not my rebound guy!' Miss Martian said.
'Well said, Angel Fish,' said Lagoon Boy.
'Denying it doesn't make it true.' Shade remarked. 'not that it matters this isn't gonna last.'
'What do you know? You're just a kid,' Lagoon Boy remarked.
'I'm almost done with this bomb. Just one more wire,' said Red Hood.
'I know more than you apparently and I'm 13.'
'Oh snap!' Nightwing said. 'It's your birthday?!'
'Yeah hoping you'd forget I'm already having a crappy time with these two.'
'This first mission probably counts as a present, but I did get you another one a couple days ago,' said Nightwing. 'I'll give it to you when we get home. Deal?'
'Deal,' said Shade.
'Now, if everyone would be so kind as to…… Stop arguing in the telepathic link!' Red Hood shouted. 'It's hard enough disarming a bomb and removing it, but I have to do it with arguments in my skull!?'
'sorry.' shade remarked.
'Us too,' said Superboy.
'Yeah. We'll sto-' Lagoon Boy started, and then paused. 'Wait. What is that? Whoa! Looks like we got company.'
Shade looked off and noticed the Manta army.
'I'm heading out to get rid of the bomb,' said Red Hood.
'Acknowledged. Superboy, get some underwater gear and help Lagoon Boy,' said Nightwing.
'Good well I'm assuming the bomb on the the rocket was disabled.' Shade said in a calm tone.
'Yes,' said Red Hood. 'I'm throwing it away right now. And it's gone.'
Shade smiled happily at him. 'I'll deal with a few of the minions.'
'And we'll be backing you up,' said Artemis.
'Alright.' she walked out as she came out and slammed into the man sending him to the ground. She looked to Aqualad the one who saved her from Deathstroke.
"It's you," he said in shock. "Why are you here?"
She didn't answer, merely jumped into the darkness she created.
"Kaldur, you don't wanna do this!" Artemis said.
"Believe me, I do," said Kaldur
She jumped onto Kaldur through the shadows. As if to stop him. She felt someone stab her and she fell to the ground from one of the men.
"No!" Red Hood shouted as he charged at the man who stabbed Shade. "How dare you harm her!"
Aqualad looked surprised again at the man as the man fought off Red. Aqualad was about to attack artmus but there was a second he hesitated.
"What's the matter? Don't wanna fight after your soldier harmed that innocent child?!" Artemis asked as she fought him herself.
"She's hardly innocent but we have history." Aqualad remarked, trying his best to fight her off.
Once she was close enough, she whispered, "Don't forget what you have to do."
He went and did a fake stabbing. "Welcome back by the way."
They all looked shocked. Then they saw Shade get up the wound healing before tackling the man Red Hood was fighting and dragging him into the darkness with her.
"Artemis!" Nightwing screamed as he caught her.
Shade came up and ran over to the girl. Making a gesture saying let me take her injury.
"I'm not sure it'll matter…… I can't hear her heartbeat," Superboy said in horror.
"Brother, you have to let her try. There may still be a chance to save her!" Red Hood said in panic.
"There isn't," said Nightwing as he stopped. "She's dead."
Marissa moved in and tried to take the injury. "It's…." She seemed to realize something.
Nightwing took her hand and turned her face to his. He looked her in the eyes and shook his head; it was like he was telling her not to tell.
"I took it but it's not working. Her heart isn't beating."
"No…… no, no, no, no!" Miss Martian said as she burst into tears.
"I'm sorry." Shade said.
"Where's Lagoon Boy?" Red Hood asked. "He should be with her."
"Kaldur's men took him," Miss Martian said in between so s while Superboy hugged her.
"Well then we're even I have one of his in my shadow dimension." Shade said.
"We'll handle him later," said Nightwing. "We have more important matters. Like telling the others what happened……. Including Wally."
Shade grabbed Nightwing's arm and Jason's. "We need to talk alone."
"We will," said Nightwing.
"Not will, am." She said draging the two in the shadows. "The link won't work in the shadows so sorry if we're disconnected for a bit." They were gone.
Shadow demison
They entered a black space that seems void of anything, any light yet somehow they could see each other.
"I was gonna tell you when I met up with Wally, Artemis and Kaldur, you didn't have to do this," said Nightwing.
"Were you gonna tell him?" She gestured to Jason.
"Are you hiding something, Dick?" Jason asked while removing his mask and showing his face. "You think I don't know a fake crime scene when I see one?"
"I can't heal a wound that's not there, Nightwing. Did you assume I wouldn't know or try to heal her and take her wound."
Nightwing sighed and said, "I was trying to make you believe it was already too late. I thought if you believed it, then you wouldn't try."
"I'm stubborn."
"So, what's going on?" Red Hood asked.
Nightwing held his composure and said, "Artemis had to die so she can join Kaldur on his mission."
"Explains why he was worried about me. He didn't know I couldn't die." Marissa remarked.
"He's been undercover ever since he left the Team. He infiltrated Black Manta knowing that joining him would lead him to the Light," said Nightwing.
She looked at Dick with concern. Before punching him in his arm.
"Ow!" He said.
"You're an idiot." Marissa remarked.
"Did you turn your brain off after I died?" Jason asked in annoyance.
"It was the only way to cripple the Light from within," Dick argued.
"Uh no it really wasn't. I have more info about the Light than he does, so does Atlas." Marissa remarked.
"So now you've put two of your friends in harm's way and emotionally hurt your other friends for no good reason," said Jason.
"And Jason you probably have info too since you were a Shadow and killed people for both." Marissa remarked a little absentmindedly.
"I'll give all I have," said Jason. "Right now, we have to figure out how we're gonna fix this mess. The others probably won't forgive you guys."
"We can't tell them, not all of them," Marissa remarked.
"Really? I should tell Miss Martian that I faked her best friends' death?" Dick sarcastically asked.
"Yeah she is one but I'm saying you can't tell everyone. If you do it could leak and it's already a big mess. Superboy, Miss Martian are the two you should absolutely tell also we could do it here since no electricity works here or psychic abilities."
"We should probably also tell Batman," said Jason.
"Yeah but again in here no offense to Bats but right now I'm not trusting any tech or psychic abilities that could get Kaldur killed."
"Okay," said Dick. "Man, Wally, Kaldur, and Artemis are so gonna kill me for revealing all this."
"If they get the chance you assume I'm not leaving you here for a week." She said going up to get the other two.
"Seriously?!" Dick shouted. "I helped put your birthday dinner together!"
"You also faked a death on her birthday." Jason retorted. "Don't worry, I'll give her the present you got her."
Dick crossed his arms. "I hate having siblings."
"No you don't," said Jason.
"Well at least one with superpowers."
"Tough luck, bird boy," said Jason.
Marissa returned with Superboy and Miss Martian. 'Ok got them. No one can hear us. Also, don't try your powers in here Miss M, they won't work. Actually I'm unsure if it will just hurt if you try.' she signed.
Miss Martian looked at Jason and focused. "Nothing," she said. "I can't read your mind."
"That's good. I was just thinking that Connor looked like a moron before," said Jason.
"I thought so too," said Superboy. "I hate monkey suits."
"But why are we here?" Miss Martian asked. "We should be telling the others about Artemis. And they need to know that her sacrifice wasn't in vain."
'Later. But you need to know the truth.' she signed.
Dick sighed and said, "Artemis isn't dead."
Superboy glared at Nightwing. "That's not funny. We all saw Kaldur kill her."
'He's not lying I couldn't take the injury I would have bled if I had shortly but I would have.' she pointed to the part where she was stabbed before and blood on there.
"She's right," said Dick. "And Kaldur never betrayed us. He's been in deep cover infiltrating Black Manta's troops in order to cripple the Light from within."
"What?!" Miss Martian asked in shock. "So why fake Artemis' death? Why put us through that? Why put Wally through that?!"
'Our reaction exactly.' Marissa signed removing her mask.
"It's you," said Miss Martian in surprise. "You're from the night with Clayface."
She looked confused. She signed. 'you didn't realize that until now?'
"I guess I didn't remember what you looked like," said Miss Martian.
"Also, to answer your question, M'gann, Wally's in on it," said Nightwing. "I called upon Artemis to join Kaldur on the mission because someone should be by his side."
"Then why not fake your own death?" Superboy asked. "Why not ask Wally? Why choose Artemis?"
"Females are often less suspicious," said Dick. "Plus she's better at passing for a villain than us."
'If I had he would be in more trouble.' Marissa signed.
"So why tell us now?" Miss Martian asked, arms crossed.
'Because I made him.'
Superboy looked at Dick and said, "Your sister has you wrapped around her finger."
"Kinda," said Dick. "Also, Batgirl will have to run the Team for a week. My darling sister is keeping me here for that long."
'I was joking, I'm not that mean. It could drive someone insane if you leave someone here too long.' she signed.
Dick looked ticked. "You are so dead," he said.
'What did I do? You couldn't tell I was being sarcastic?'
"How was I supposed to tell that?!" Dick asked.
'I was talking did you really think I would leave my brother in the dark abyss with a criminal around. This place has no end and only I can sense others here. I'm not mean I'd never do that for real.'
"Wait. That trooper is still in here?" Superboy asked, looking around.
'yeah but it's a huge place it's not gonna be like he can munver this area. I'm the way in and out.' she signed. 'He's probably running around thinking he can get out but it's just an empty space that he can't get out of. It's all dark no light very empty.'
"You are seriously twisted," said Superboy.
'You act like I made this place. Besides, the guy stabbed me.' Marissa frowned while signing. 'it's not like I'm not gonna let him out once we get to a proper place to contain him I'll let him out.'
"Okay," said Nightwing. "And until we can get Kaldur and Artemis out safely, keep this knowledge a secret."
"Okay. For Artemis and Wally," said Superboy.
"And L'gann," Miss Martian said. "Kaldur and Artemis may be the only ones who can save him."
Marissa nodded.
"Alright. Let's go back," said Red Hood as he put his mask back on. "Wally will be expecting Dick."
'I'll get us through the darkness to him.' Marissa said, putting her mask on and walking through.
"Wait. The others," said Miss Martian. "And we left Artemis on the beach."
She signed. 'I'll get her.' she went up and out and returned with Artemis and brought the others to a separate location.
Artemis was unable to contain her shock or play dead any longer.
"I can explain," she said.
"We already know," said Superboy.
Artemis sighed and said, "I'm sorry, guys. We couldn't tell you without risking you all holding back."
She signed. 'I won't hold back on anything honestly surprised you thought they would.'
"M'gann might have," said Artemis, looking at her Martian friend sadly. "The way she fights Kaldur could tip off Black Manta. Black Manta may be his father, but Kaldur has to prove he is truly with him."
"So what now?" Connor asked. "What happens now that we know?"
'I think Miss Martian is capable she just has to really imagine hating him. She'll do fine. Pretend he's Deathstroke.' she signed.
"Am I truly on his level?" Kaldur asked as he and Wally made themselves known.
'No he's a pedfile but it helps.'
"It will make me mad enough to fight you as an enemy," said M'gann.
"Wait, why does she say he's a pedfile?" Connor remarked.
"Because he is one, Connor," said Kaldur, angrily. "I stabbed him when he made an attempt on her."
'Well we're talking about that I'm tailas daughter.'
"I kinda guessed as much," said Connor. "You kinda look like her with paler skin, white hair, and blue eyes. Plus much younger."
She frowned.
"But Nightwing, Dick, treated you like his sister," said Connor, and then he gave a friendly smile. "You being his sister is enough for me to not doubt you."
"I didn't realize that." M'gann said.
"I've studied Talia's picture to tell if it's her in disguise anytime she tries to pull a fast one," said Connor.
'well, neither of you can tell the others.'
"I'm sure they'll accept you," said Artemis. "Superboy is part Luthor and my father is Sportsmaster. Heck, my sister, Cheshire, is hard to predict most days."
'Like Miss Martian and Lagoon Boy did the first time they met me as shade?' She signed.
"Look, all I'm saying is that secrets don't always stay buried," said Artemis. "M'gann has a huge secret she kept from the Team at first."
Marissa shook her head. 'Mine is bad if the others can't trust me on the field it's not gonna work. My mother dipped me in the Lazarus pit and now I'm basically scarred for life.'
"Alright. We won't tell anyone," said Connor.
Dick took her hand and said, "Just remember, you are an Al Ghul, but you are also a Wayne. You're Batman's daughter as well as Talia's."
She nodded. Smiling slightly.
"But most of all, you are who you choose to be," said Artemis, smiling.
"Now, what about L'gann?" Miss Martian asked Kaldur, arms crossed.
"I am sorry about that," said Kaldur. "Capturing him was the only way to save his life."
Marissa raised her hand.
"You have a suggestion?" Wally asked.
"Atlas."
"They may not be necessary," said Kaldur.
"True but they could get it done faster they hate the Light."
"But if we're not careful, all of our work will have been for nothing," said Kaldur. "My father was pleased with my work on the mission and I have proved my loyalty and am moving up the ladder."
"True and should Atlus attack and you prove to prevent them from doing something like killing your father or another member of the Light it won't matter if one of the prisoners get taken in the process."
"That could work," said Dick. "And he'll have Tigress helping him."
"Who's Tigress?" Jason asked.
Artemis pointed at herself and said, "Tigress."
"I got a burner phone. I'll set up a meeting with them in the shadow realm." She said laughing at her own joke.
"But, how are we gonna fool Manta with the new girl?" Wally asked. "Even though Artemis is presumed dead, he knows what she looks like."
"Got it covered," said Dick as he gave Artemis a yellow pendant.
"By the way any info I can use as a bargaining chip there not gonna do this for free."
Kaldur thought about that and said, "My father was the one who planted the bomb that Red Hood found on the rocket. Does that count?"
"Not really. More like something they'll want like other prisoners' cords. Wait Dick can you get dad to invite the leader for a spotlight thing that might work. More publicity means more people for them that might entice her."
"I can talk to him about that," said Dick.
"I do have something on Deathstroke," said Kaldur. "For one thing, he survived. He also has three children. Two sons, Grant and Joseph, and a daughter, Rose. All three hate him."
"Oh, they're gonna love that. Using his own kids against him they'll eat that up." She called the burner.
"Anything we should know about them?" Wally asked in concern.
"They are a group that has a more female-centric highercy; they wish to kill Savage and believe his goals are idiocy. They think if females were the main leaders the world would be better off and heroes should be more strict."
Wally gulped and said, "I meant the Deathstroke kids, but that does help."
"Joseph, the younger son, has psychic powers," said Kaldur. "He calls himself the codename Jericho. Grant and Rose share a codename as well. They are the Ravagers, ruthless mercenaries."
She waited for them to pick up. "Ask questions now about Atlas while I wait for them to pick up."
"Okay," said Artemis. "Are they familiar with Themyscira?"
"No, not in that way. They didn't get their beliefs from them is what I mean."
"Okay," said Connor. "Was that lady, Lilly, telling the truth about Martian kids in their care?"
"Yes. All females or at least from what I gathered they all are."
M'gann frowned and asked, "So none were male?"
"There were no males that came to her I'm not saying she treats male children badly but there not equal she won't harm kids manipulate may be but she's a high believer all beings can be brought into their fold and those who follow the beliefs of mind control or killing heros who are beyond useful should be eliminated. They don't like to waste anyone which it may be different in its own right but they're not good either. They will kill and if required kidnap."
"I guess I was hoping to hear that my little brother was with her," said M'gann. "He's like me. I haven't heard from him since I came to Earth."
"I may not have all the information so it's possible." Marissa said in a gentle tone.
"Or he's with your parents," Connor told M'gann.
"I hope so," said M'gann. "Most of my siblings were green and not all greens are kind to white like him….. and me. In fact, we were both bullied a lot."
"I'm sorry." Marissa said in a sad tone.
"It's okay. There was nothing you could've done," said M'gann.
"I may not agree with Atlas's methods but if it makes you feel better they seem to really want to help. They seem to be bad people but also for a good reason. I'm saying they're a better alternative than dealing with the Light and probably preferable."
M'gann smiled and said, "Thanks. So, how many of the Martian kids are white?"
"All but 1 I believe." Marissa said trying to remember. "There are 8. 7 are white and the other one is red."
"That one I didn't expect," said M'gann.
"Why?" Wally asked.
"Red Martian's are royalty," said M'gann. "Whites are treated as second-class citizens by the greens and reds. My mother's green, but she didn't see that as okay."
"Ama'ya said something along the lines of 'I dislike my family treating our people like they do. I refused to live like royalty when the only difference is my color.'"
"Wise words," said M'gann, smiling. And then she turned herself white. "I might start going public. As a white for the Martian kids."
Marissa smiled. The phone finally picked up. "Finally."
[Hello, you've reached Atlas. I am Delia] said a woman on the other end. [How may we help?"
"I have info for Lilly about Deathstroke's kids. A trade for some help with a project."
[I'll put you through right away] said, Delia.
The line played music for a second and then someone answered. [This is Lilly Loyal. I'm listening] said the woman.
"The information I have will cost you I need your group to go and make an attempt to kill one of the Light members and let the member be rescued well you take children who are prisoners from them and bring them to a location I'll send but you must make it look like the kids were just bonus' and you must save Lagoon Boy."
The line was silent until Lilly said, [This information sounded valuable from what Delia told me. So, it should be worth the price. It will be done.]
"The names will be brought to you via Miss Martian once the job is done and you can bring anyone you like when you meet her. But if anything happens to her if she doesn't return…"
[She will return unharmed. You have my word] said, Lilly.
"Good and she should have Lagoon Boy once she returns you keep your end we keep ours. I'll hang up now." She hung up the phone and stomped on it.
"So, what's with the bling?" Wally asked, referring to Artemis' necklace.
"It's a glamor charm from Zatanna. A physio morphic spell, I think. She said it backwards," said Dick. "It's a disguise."
Wally looked at Artemis and said, "Wow. She looks exactly the same."
"To us, and only us. But, to everyone else, she looks completely different," said Dick.
Marissa poked Artemis. "Keep it tucked in."
Artemis did that and said, "The bigger mystery is how Dick was able to get something so specific from Zatanna without revealing who or what it was for."
"We have a history," said Dick.
"You dog," Wally teased him.
"And now I can join Kaldur as the assassin Tigress," said Artemis. And then she looked at Marissa. "I'm sorry your birthday was a bust."
"It's alright."
"It's not over yet," said Dick, smiling. "We can still make it back to Gotham in time for your cake and presents."
She nodded making a black portal.
"Be careful, babe," Wally said as he hugged Artemis.
"I will," said Artemis. "I'll be back soon. Please watch over my mother."
"I will," said Wally.
Jason looked at Artemis and said, "I was happy to see you again. I look forward to seeing you return."
And then they left through the portal.
"Dick, you're still in trouble." Marissa remarked. "But because I'm a forgiving sister you'll be in trouble in three days."
"Plus, I think we've had enough drama for one birthday," said Jason as they went home.
-Wayne Manor-
Alfred lit the candles and carried the cake to Marissa. Bruce hugged her, having heard about Artemis.
"I'm sorry you had to witness that," he said.
"It's fine." She smiled looking at the cake.
"Make a wish," said Tim.
She made a wish In her mind and blew out the candles.
"I'll cut this and you can open your presents," said Alfred as he picked up a knife.
Bruce gave her a wrapped gift box. She opened it and found a brand new cellphone.
"Thank you it's very cute." Marissa said, looking at it in a confused way. "Gonna be honest, I always had burner phones so I have no clue how to use this."
"I'll teach you," said Tim. And then he gave her a box. "This one's from me."
Marissa opened it and found a blue dress. It was sleeveless with a darker blue ribbon and a butterfly on the torso.
"Thank you. It's very pretty."
"I'm hoping you can wear it for special occasions," he said.
"I'll do so." She smiled.
"I hope you're not too old for this. First time shopping for a little sister," said Jason as he gave her his gift.
Inside the box was a white stuffed bunny with a pink ribbon.
She smiled, hugging it. "I love it."
"I guess we got similar ideas," said Dick as he gave her his gift. "Except it's not a rabbit."
She opened the box and found a little husky puppy with gray fur on her back and white on her paws.
"Doggie!" She hugged it, placing the bunny down carefully.
"You like her?" Dick asked. "I remembered you mentioning liking huskies."
"Love her mom would never let me have an animal. She said it was a weakness."
"Well, she's wrong," said Bruce. "I believe your love for Lady can be a source of strength."
"Lady? She's more like an angel." The puppy immediately kissed Marissa.
"Okay. Angel it is," said Dick.
"Who's a good girl?" Marissa playfully asked her new puppy.
"Oh! Almost forgot!" Bruce said as he grabbed another one. "This one is from Alfred."
Angel sat with Marissa as she opened. This gift was a locket with a picture of Bruce and Jason next to one of Dick and Tim.
"This is wonderful, thank you. But where are you?" She said with a smile.
"Me?" Alfred asked as he put the cake pieces on plates.
"You're part of this family too, Alfred," said Marissa.
Alfred smiled and said, "I guess I forgot to put my photo in there. Tell you what, I'll take a new picture and add it."
"Great." Marissa smiled.
"Cake is served," Alfred said as he passed the cake pieces around.
" Marissa and Jason both performed admirably," said Dick as he ate his piece of cake. "Both have proven to be exceptional members and are welcome to officially join the Team."
"Sounds wonderful." Marissa smiled.
"It will be great to be on the Team again," said Jason. "And now I have faith that Red Hood is a hero."
"You had doubts." Marissa said petting her puppy, Angel.
"Kinda," said Jason.
"Well, you are a great hero."
"Thanks," said Red Hood with a smile.
Dick then let out a sigh and said, "Bruce, I need to tell you something about Cape Canaveral."
"What is it?" Bruce asked.
Dick looked reluctant, but he said, "Artemis isn't dead. Kaldur pretended to kill her; he never betrayed us. He's under deep cover infiltrating Black Manta's troops. Artemis faked her death to join him. Wally was against it, but realized we had few options."
Bruce looked shocked.
"How many know?" Bruce said in a calm tone.
"Myself, Kaldur, Artemis, Wally, M'gann, Connor, Jason, and Marissa," said Dick.
"Alright keep in that group for now." Bruce said then he got a phone call. "Hello really...alright… so apparently Superman and Wonder Woman and Martian Manhunter have been acquitted from their charges with new evidence being brought to light about their actions so they'll be returning thanks to Atlas and the other evidence will take a while to be processed but the rest should be found not guilty as well."
"That's great!" Dick said. "M'gann and Connor are gonna be so happy."
"Cassie too," said Tim.
"So one deal has been finished but the next part will be a lot tougher." Marissa remarked with her puppy in hand.
"We should probably throw in some new info for a tip," said Dick.
"We really shouldn't." Marissa said, concerned.
"Okay. We won't," said Dick. "How about I take you shopping to buy toys for Angel here."
"Ok…. Big brother, I am concerned about others." Marissa said in a gentle tone.
"Me too, little sister," said Dick.
Marissa sighed as she looked at the puppy. "You know it's kinda nice to have been calm in my life."
"I hoped that having a pet would help you," said Dick.
"I think it will." Marissa smiled at him. And continued eating her cake.
"You know this means we may have to act angry or sad every time we're with our friends," said Jason.
"Yeah, I know."
"Don't worry. Everything will be fine," said Dick.
Marissa nodded happily.
"Now, let the celebration continue," said Alfred. "Artemis and Kaldur would want you to."
She nodded and she got herself psyched.
"Happy birthday, Marissa!" Her family happily said.
"Thank you." Marissa smiled at them. This was the end of the day.
