Chapter 26: A Jedi's Sacrifice

Obi-Wan was stirring and pulling himself up. He had recovered from the blow to his head and although a little shaken, was ready to continue the battle with the Sith. However, Anakin took no notice to the Jedi, he had something important to say to Padmé.

Twisting his saber is a series of violent and rapid swings to distract the Sith Lord; Anakin turned his gaze down to his pregnant wife. "Padmé." He called out softly. He was trying to be soothing because he knew his words would cause her pain.

"Ani…" Padmé gasped out wearily.

"Padmé, I love you." Anakin smiled warmly at her. He then changed the rotation of his saber in order to confuse the Sith Lord some more and buy him some more time to speak with his wife.

"I know." Padmé smiled back at him. "I love you too."

A tear threatened to escape Anakin's eyes as he spoke again, but he willed himself to remain strong for Padmé's sake. "Tell…tell." Anakin voice faltered slightly as he tried to find the right words to say. "Tell the children, I love them. I will watch over them and you. You will be safe from the Sith."

"What are you talking about?" Padmé asked her eyes widening in shock, she did not like the tone Anakin was using.

"Promise me, you will tell them." Anakin replied calmly, but with a hint of urgency in his voice.

"Promise? Anakin, you are scaring me!" Padmé winced as another contraction hit, but she refused to look away from her husband, something was not right. She fought through the pain and kept her eyes locked on his.

"There won't be anything to be scared of in a moment. I will destroy the Sith. I love you, my angel." Anakin gave Padmé a reassuring smile before turning his attention back on his task. One of the tears he had been holding back fell from his eye when he realized he would never hold his children in his arms. He would never again hold Padmé in his arms and lose himself in the bright brown pools that were her eyes. He would miss his family, but his actions were necessary to protect them from the Sith.

A few feet from Anakin, Master Yoda turned his head towards the young Jedi when he felt a strong wave of emotions emanating from him in the Force. When the diminutive Jedi looked up into Anakin's face, realization dawned on him. The younger Jedi had discovered a way to end this struggle.

Although Anakin had not voiced his plans, based on the pain the young man was feeling, Yoda could guess what the Jedi Knight planned to do. Anakin was going to sacrifice himself to destroy the Sith and he was currently reflecting on all the things he would have to miss for this sacrifice. His future, his love, and his children would be out of his reach because of a selfless act to destroy the Sith. Yoda's eyes narrowed as he watched the younger Jedi's actions and prepared for what was to happen next.

Anakin swung his cerulean lightsaber in his hand a few more times before he abruptly stopped and deactivated his blade. He then threw his weapon to the ground and waited for his destiny. Sidious cackled with glee at his former apprentice's surrender. Victory was his. Although the Sith had been momentarily taken aback by Anakin's actions, he had quickly regrouped and pulled his saber back in a high arc.

"Anakin! What are you doing?" Padmé screamed when she saw her husband was defenseless.

"It is all right, Angel. Everything will be…" Anakin began before he was violently pushed to the floor.

"Nooooooo!" Obi-Wan and Padmé screamed simultaneously, both watching the events unfold before them. Sidious had stopped his attacks on Obi-Wan and Yoda when he knew he would successfully destroy Anakin.

Anakin looked up from his sprawled position on the floor to see that Master Yoda had jumped between Sidious and Padmé as Sidious had made his final attack. However, Master Yoda was nowhere to be seen. Only the elder Jedi's robes were visible. They were floating to the ground cut in half where a lightsaber had sliced through them. Both Master Yoda's and Sidious' sabers deactivated and fell to the floor echoing around the room.

Master Yoda had Force shoved Anakin out of the way and sacrificed himself instead. Yoda had ended his life and become one with the Force in order to stop the Sith. Now the Force was in balance, with a powerful Jedi to suppress Sidious' darkness. There would be no more problems from the Sith Lord. An eerie silence fell across the room now that the Force was in balance and the Sith could no longer harm anyone.

"Anakin… Anakin…" Padmé frantically stated as she inched her way closer to her husband. She was fighting her labor pains and awkwardness from her pregnancy to get to his side. At the same time, Obi-Wan was making his way closer to them. The lone Jedi Master kneeled next to Yoda's Jedi robes and stared blankly at them.

"Anakin, what were you thinking?" Padmé asked as tears fell from her eyes. Anakin had wrapped her in his arms in an attempt to comfort her.

"I… I…" Anakin stuttered, unsure of what to say. He had prepared himself for his sacrifice and he was thrown off guard by Yoda's actions. He was grieving for the elder Jedi Master, but was also thankful that Yoda had given him a chance to be with his family.

"Don't you ever do that again!" Padmé stated hysterically before breaking down in tears. She was also grieving for Master Yoda, but she was also distressed with the thought that she had almost lost her husband. There were no words to express her gratitude to Master Yoda. The thought of living without Anakin was unbearable and she did not know how she could have handled that on top of her pregnancy.

"Shh, it's all right. We need to get you out of here." Anakin replied as he regained his composure. Both he and Padmé would need time to grieve for Master Yoda, but his children had other plans at the moment. In response, Anakin carefully shifted Padmé into his arms so that he could lift her up. With the loss of his right hand, he called upon the Force to help him hold her steady. Anakin could feel the babies moving within Padmé and knew that they were not delaying their arrival, despite the tragedy that had befallen this day.

"Obi-Wan, I need to get Padmé out of here. Are you all right?" Anakin asked as he noticed Obi-Wan had a lost look across his face.

"Ye... Yes." Obi-Wan's voice cracked and he paused before resuming. "Yes, I will take care of things here."

"Are you sure?" Padmé asked before she winced as another contraction began.

"Yes, and you need to leave. It looks like your little ones will not wait much longer." Obi-Wan answered ushering his friends out the door. He gave a long sigh as he readied his next task.
