I do not own Harry Potter, only the OC
Hello guys, Badger here. I'm happy to see people enjoyed the first chapter for this new story, so I decided to write the next chapter. I was thinking about alternating, so I will write one chapter for this story, then another chapter for one of my other stories, then another chapter for this story, as I have many ideas for where this story could go, some darker than others and I want to see where I take this story as much as you. I haven't decided where this story will go just yet, but hopefully, by the end of Philosophers Stone I would have decided.
That is all for now. You know what to do, read on and I will see you at the very end.
Chapter 2
An Unsettling Feeling At The Sorting
The compartment gently rocked back and forth, as the carriage gently shook, the train riding along the tracks, heading towards Hogwarts. Harry believed it was unnecessary, but Dumbledore made him ride the train, so no questions were asked. Dumbledore had wanted Harry's location secret. Hogwarts may have been the safest place in Britain, but that didn't mean someone would try to break in, if they knew. In fact, only those Dumbledore trusted the most, knew Harry lived at Hogwarts. Then, in order to ensure Harry's safety even more, Dumbledore had moved Harry's room so it was closer to his office. It didn't matter which house Harry was sorted in, he was to remain living in his own bedroom. Dumbledore was sometimes a bit too overprotective. Harry rolled his eyes slightly, as he stopped looking out the window and turned his attention to his friends, who were talking amongst themselves. Along with James and Ginny, Harry was joined by Astoria, Neville, Aila, Susan and Blaise. Michael and the Twins were elsewhere on the train, with their other friends, but Michael did say he'd join them as they make their way to the Sorting.
It surprised Harry how different they all were. James and his twin sister Aila were two sides of the same coin, Aila was more bubbly and lively, but she didn't properly plan things out, often making things up as she went along, meanwhile James was more cautious and calculated, though he did have a comical side to him too. Astoria was like Aila, she was bubbly and was always making people laugh, she was completely different to her sister Daphne, who wasn't a people person and rarely hung out with them. Neville was more quiet and shy, which Harry believed was a result of his upbringing, but he had a big heart, he just needed some confidence. Blaise was honest, sometimes brutally so, he wasn't afraid to say whatever was on his mind and, though he was humble about it, was quite intelligent. Both Ginny and Susan were fiery little spitfires, and were people you didn't want to see angry. The twins were born pranksters, always inventing new gadgets, and were always seen with a smile on their face and then there was Michael, a boy was very intelligent, but unlike Blaise, he wasn't humble about it and often tried to show off his intelligence, but he was a kind bloke. Despite how different they were, Harry couldn't ask for better friends.
…
The moon was beginning to rise, as the train pulled into its destination. Harry couldn't help but smile, as he saw Hagrid. The jolly half giant was always fun to be around, though his cooking skills could do with some improvement. He was also, usually the one to find Harry, whenever he found himself wandering the grounds;
A six year old, Harry Potter was roaming the fields outside the castle. It was around this time Harry was starting to have his first bouts of accidental magic and Harry was constantly finding himself teleporting around the castle randomly. This had happened earlier and Harry found himself in the fields. Being so little, and curious, Harry had begun exploring, where he found a small rabbit in the grass and tried chasing after it. The rabbit had run off, heading towards the Dark Forest. Harry was about to follow it, when he found himself being picked up. It was Hagrid, who was accompanied by Fang.
"Woah there, young Harry" He said "What are you doing out here?"
"Wabbit" Harry replied, pointing straight ahead "Me follows Wabbit"
Hagrid looked to where Harry was pointing and saw the small furry bundle bounding into the Dark Forest.
"Oh no Harry" He said, heading back to the castle "Can't have you going in there…come on, lets take you back to Dumbledore"
Harry was brought out of his reminiscing, when Michael had appeared, wrapping an arm over Harry's and Blaise's shoulders, as they made their way towards the boats. Why they couldn't just take a carriage like the older students, Harry had no idea. After every student had sat in a boat, a small wave had risen, sending them off in the direction of the castle. Seeing the large castle always made Harry smile, no matter how many times he saw it. There was just something about it that warmed his heart. After arriving in the boat house, Hagrid led them up to the castle, where they came across McGonagall waiting in the main courtyard, where Hagrid handed the group over before he headed into the castle. McGonagall lead the new students into the Great Hall, after a small speech of the Houses and Harry was in awe at the sight. He had been in the Great Hall before, when they were no students around, but it never looked as bright and as beautiful as this. The students stopped in front of the teachers podium, where a lone stool stood, with a hat on top. McGonagall tapped her wand against it and it immediatley came to life and began to sing.
"Oh, you may not think I'm pretty, But don't judge on what you see, I'll eat myself if you can find A smarter hat than me.
You can keep your bowlers black,
Your top hats sleek and tall,
For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat
And I can cap them all.
There's nothing hidden in your head
The Sorting Hat can't see,
So try me on and I will tell you
Where you ought to be.
You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve and chivalry,
Set Gryffindors apart;
You might belong in Hufflepuff
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true,
And unafraid of toil;
Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
If you've a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind;
Or perhaps in Slytherin,
You'll make your real friends,
Those cunning folk use any means,
To achieve their ends.
So put me on! Don't be afraid!
And don't get in a flap!
You're in safe hands (though I have none)
For I'm a Thinking Cap!"
Harry raised a small eyebrow after the Sorting Hat finished the song. When he was in Dumbledore's Office, the hat sometimes spoke to him, but it was safe to say, it wasn't a good singer. Harry imagined it had to be the gravelly voice it has. McGonagall held out her hand, to which a scroll appeared, before she picked up the hat, off of the stool.
"Now, I will call each of you, one at a time" She said "I will place the sorting hat on your head and he will sort you, into your House"
The sorting had started with a blond haired girl called Hannah Abbott, who went into Hufflepuff and then James and Aila. Aila had gone into Hufflepuff as well, whilst James went into Slytherin. To Harry, that made sense. As the sorting went on, Harry felt the gaze of someone staring at him. He must've been a new teacher, as Harry had never seen the man before. He was bald and was dressed in purple and black robes. Harry wasn't sure why the man was staring at him, but it made him uncomfortable.
"Harry Potter" McGonagall called out, reading his name off of the scroll
Harry was snapped out of his thoughts, and slowly made his way to the stool, as students began to whisper excitedly, hoping to get a better look at the Boy-Who-Lived. Harry ignored these whispers, however, as his attention was on the stool, remembering a conversation he had with Dumbledore the previous day;
"Are you okay Harry?" Dumbledore asked "You seem a little tense, is something wrong?"
"I'm fine…it's just…I'm worried about my sorting" Harry replied, nervously "I want to make you proud and I want to make my parents proud…would they care about what house I'm in?"
"Harry…" Dumbledore said, placing a gentle hand on Harry's shoulder "You shouldn't be worried, a house is a house…it doesn't matter if you are a Gryffindor, a Hufflepuff, a Ravenclaw or a Slytherin, I know your parents will be proud of you, because I am proud of you, and I always will be"
…
Shaking the cobwebs from his head, Harry sat down on the stool, where McGonagall placed the Sorting Hat on his head, where Harry felt a small tingling feeling in the back of his head.
"Ha!" The Sorting Hat yelled out, startling the Great Hall and made Harry jump in his seat "I have been looking forward to this day, Mr Potter, I'm so happy to sort you at last…and I must say, you have an interesting mind…I can see you doing well in any of the four Houses…I can sense courage, intelligence, loyalty and ambition…you have all the Founders in a squabble, each one of them are demanding I place you in there House, though looking deeper, things become clearer, you loyalty to your friends would definitely make you a worthy edition to Hufflepuff House, but your thirst for knowledge will definitely be quenched should you be placed in Ravenclaw House…oh, what's this…ahh, I see, it all becomes clear now, I know where to put you, I welcome you Mr Potter too…RAVENCLAW!"
Ravenclaw Table clapped and cheered, as Harry made his way over, the lapels of his robes, and his tie changing to the blue and silver that represented their House. Harry sat down next to Michael, who also ended up in Ravenclaw, though that didn't surprise Harry. Looking at the teachers table, Harry saw Dumbledore smiling at him, causing Harry to smile, before he looked over to Flitwick, who was the Head of House for Ravenclaw, where the half goblin was also smiling at him and gave Harry a small wink. The rest of the sorting flew by. In the end, Susan ended up in Hufflepuff along with Aila, Astoria and her sister Daphne ended up in Slytherin, Neville and Ginny ended up in Gryffindor and Blaise, the last student to be sorted, also ended up in Slytherin. With all the students sorted, Dumbledore stood up from his chair, clapping his hands together, to get everyone's attention.
"Before the feast begins, I wish to make a few announcements" He said "Firstly, as I warn you every year, the Dark Forest is out of bounds to all students, it is full of dangerous creatures and we do not wish to see any of you get severely injured…secondly, the third floor corridors are also out of bounds to all students, there is some important work happening that us professors don't want you students wandering in on, it could be very dangerous, so we ask you keep your distance…now, finally, we have a new professor with us, this is Professor Quirrell, he used to work at Ilvermorny school in America, and will be the new Defence Against the Dark Arts professor, as Professor Alius retired last year, let's give him a round of applause"
There was a scatter of applause as Quirrell stood up and waved nervously to the students. Harry wasn't sure what it was, but there was something about the man that was unsettling him. Harry chose to shrug it off, for now and turned his attention to the food that appeared across the table in front of him.
…
Quirrell glared at the raven haired boy sitting at Ravenclaw table, but made sure that it wasn't obvious that he was doing so. That boy was the reason why his master was the way he is. Hopefully that fat, useless lump he called a servant will be able to keep the Dark Lord sustained. Why the Dark Lord kept the rat around in the first place, Quirrell had no idea. Still he had his uses and their main priority was to find a way to give the Dark Lord a new body and they were certain they had a solution. His master had received word that the Philosophers Stone, a magical artefact capable of granting immortality was hidden inside one of Gringotts vaults. The Dark Lord had sent some people to retrieve it, but their attempts were unsuccessful and they were placed in the Goblin Prison Mines, something many considered to be a fate worse then death. Then, because of the break-in, the Philosophers Stone was removed from Gringotts and placed in a secret location and Quirrell's Master believed Dumbledore had something to do with it and had placed it inside Hogwarts.
Quirrell had been ordered to get the job as the Defence Professor at Hogwarts and try to find where the Stone could be and now, he had an answer. If what Dumbledore had said is true, then it must be hidden somewhere on the Third Floor. He just needed to find out where. Thankfully, Quirrell was an expert at 'playing the fool', making others believe he was just a stuttering, bumbling idiot. No one will suspect a thing, until it was too late. However, the sight of Harry Potter made his blood boil. It took every fibre of his being to resist pulling out his wand and firing the Killing Curse at the boy. Besides, Quirrell wouldn't be allowed to anyway. His Master had laid claim on the boy. Only he may be the one to kill the boy and Quirrell knew better then to defy the Dark Lord. Those that did were tortured…if they were lucky…most were killed in slow, painful ways. Quirrell wasn't about to fall to the same fate. He will do his Master proud.
…
And that is the end of the second chapter. I'm sorry to those who wanted Harry in Hufflepuff, I almost put him in Hufflepuff, but thought of another story idea, where Andromeda Tonks raises Harry. The woman doesn't get much love in the fandom. Keep an eye out for that.
Before writing this chapter, I took a few moments to think over some things. I decided to make Quirrell be a new teacher, instead of one that has been teaching for a while because, if he was teaching at Hogwarts whilst Harry was living there, then he would've tried to kill him at some point. Also, you've probably guessed, but Voldemort won't be residing in the back of his head, instead Voldemort is the weird, shrivelled baby thing that he is in Goblet of Fire. More will be revealed soon. I also want Quirrell to be a more frequent antagonist, appearing in future books/movies, though how frequent will depend on where I choose to take this story.
Now, there was something I originally planned to include in this chapter, but later cut. Originally, the Sorting Hat was also going to name Harry the Champion of Hogwarts, who is basically the protector of the castle, however I felt like this was way too soon in the story for such a thing to happen, so I removed it. I may have him become the Champion of Hogwarts sometime in the future, or I may remove the idea entirely, I'm not sure just yet. Let me know what you think.
That is all for now, more will be revealed in future chapters, and I hope you join us on this journey.
