Chapter 4- You Bite Your Nails, And-
"Light and darkness co-exist. Two sides of the same coin. You can't just get rid of one side."
"What if we could, though?"
Vanitas was sick and tired of light screwing him up. When was a normal-ish life with the opportunity to gain needed strength again going to be on the cards? Soon, since light gave him one more blasted chance.
Sora broke so many laws of nature to bring his friends back together. As such, he was shoved into a different world with no way to get back home. Friends out of reach, but new ones in grasping reach. And by Kingdom Hearts he was going to help out a familiar face.
UA seemed like the perfect cover for them, solving all their problems. Until it didn't.
After all, light hates darkness, and darkness hates light. Destiny was inevitable.
"Hi, here's today's top news! A few minutes ago, Endeavour stopped yet another crime in Musutafu city. A fire had broken out in one of the city's offices, spreading to the entire building. While Backdraft controlled the flames, Endeavour destroyed creatures that seemingly caused the fire. Police suspect foul play, for the building to catch fire like that would be extremely difficult. The villain was not found, but police are investigating the creatures and who's quirk it could be. In other news-"
Sora stopped in his tracks and watched the media coverage on one of the towering billboards. His eyes widened at the 'creatures' and he almost summoned his keyblade in surprise. He stood still while hundreds of people streamed past him. He took a few moments to steady his breathing, before plastering a huge smile.
"Excuse me, do you know how to get to Musutafu?" Sora asked a stranger.
"A tourist, eh? Head round the corner and you can get a map." The stranger promptly continued walking, looking at their phone.
"Thanks!" Sora cheerily responded, before huffing in annoyance. "Seriously, they couldn't, like, take five seconds to help?"
Sora sighed. You've navigated new worlds before, you'll be fine! Not like you can get much more lost than you already are.
Vanitas fiddled with his hands anxiously as he sat beside Midoriya in something called a 'train'. Vanitas hated it. There were lots and lots of people crammed into each other, jostling for space. When the seats were filled, Vanitas thought that no one else would come on, but he was utterly wrong. Somehow, more people joined the jigsaw puzzle and stood, keeping balance in between stops. Vanitas got a lot of stares for his outfit, and he began to squirm under so many people's gazes. Luckily, the kid Midoriya seemed to get the most attention, for people seemed to recognize him for his 'quirk' and participation in the 'sports festival'. Vanitas had no clue what a sports festival even was. A festival was when everyone celebrated something, right? But then what was a sport? Was it some sort of 'food' he had heard of so much? Was it a type of weapon-or a duel? That sounded about right. People celebrated when people died.
As Midoriya chuckled nervously and chatted away to another stranger, Vanitas realized what he hated the most about all the people, more than the stares. It was everyone's stupid emotions. Joy and sadness and fear and excitement and tiredness and dread and guilt and love and inspiration all pressed down onto him, making Vanitas overfill. His head was a constant humming of energy, and it was taking all of his willpower and most of his focus to not summon unversed and be rid of these horrid emotions. To be cleansed and to let him think in peace.
The worst thing was how much happiness and light that burst from everyone. Any soothing darkness was immediately wiped out by another's calming words. One word kept on coming up from various conversations: All Might. Whoever this was, it provided peace and preserved the dusking light of this world.
Vanitas smiled gently. That was going to be his first target. Eliminate this 'All Might' and the light would perish. Darkness would reign free. And Vanitas would gain the strength needed to defeat those annoying Guardians of Light. Of course, he could keep busy in the meantime while info-getting. A few deaths would be nice.
"Vanitas? You ok? You've been really quiet." Midoriya looked slightly disturbed but mostly concerned.
"Yeah, why wouldn't I be?"
"You look anxious and nervous."
Vanitas frowned slightly. "Huh?" It then dawned on him; he was still making those infernal movements with his hands. He tried to stop them moving but found he could not.
"Are you not used to so many people?" Midoriya spoke quietly.
"Of course I am, what am I, five?" Vanitas looked away.
Midoriya looked down at his open hand. "You know, the first time I was on a train, I was pretty scared. I was worried that I was going to be crushed by all the giants around. But my mum, she held my hand the entire time, and made sure I was alright. She talked to me, and we played games together. By the time we had arrived at our destination, I wasn't scared anymore."
"What point are you making?" Vanitas sighed.
Midoriya looked up at Vanitas. "You don't need to be scared, or nervous. I'm here."
Why does everyone say the sappiest things? I'm not scared at all. Urgh, I can not wait until I get rid of this kid. He reminds me too much of Face-stealer.
Midoriya started another conversation. "Um, you never did tell me your quirk."
"…I did though." I'm not telling you. You're going to sell me out.
"I don't think so. I asked you, but then you asked me, and then there was the villain attack." Midoriya frowned.
"Oh, look, isn't that our stop?" Something within Vanitas snapped and he shot up, elbowing his way through the wave of people. He could not stay with that idiot any longer. The light was getting to him.
"Vanitas, wait! Pardon, excuse me."
Vanitas left the train as it was still moving slightly. He wished his dark suit had pockets, for he would be stuffing his hands as deep as possible. He marched quickly away from the wretched light and emotions.
Screw UA, screw that kid, screw everything. He's gathering intel on me, of course he is. No one's fooling me that easily. I bet he's trying to use me. No dusking way am I telling him about my powers. Vanitas convinced himself.
"Vanitas!"
He's still following me?! "Get lost."
"No!" Midoriya sprinted after Vanitas and blocked his path. "I'm sorry if you don't want to talk about your quirk, and I'm sorry if I have said something that offended you! Please don't walk away. I just want to be friends with you."
Vanitas for a split-second saw Sora instead of Midoriya, smiling the stupid grin of his. Midoriya appeared again almost instantly, but the damage was already done. Vanitas started to shake in anger and his teeth gritted together. He felt the scurrying of unversed wanting to burst out of him underneath his skin, but he denied them. All he wanted was to be rid of the fury raging within him, and his patience was already about to snap anyway, but if Vanitas summoned any unversed, Midoriya would instantly link him to the incident earlier. Vanitas could tell Midoriya was not that dumb and would call this 'All Might' and then he would be in trouble. Sure, he would easily escape, but Vanitas needed more intel before he could gain any attention.
"Vanitas, are you ok?" Midoriya looked concerned.
He needed the kid to go away. He needed to be alone. He felt like he was going to unravel into a gloop of darkness if he did not let these shadow emotions out.
(After all he was a monster, he deserved to be alone.)
"Didn't you hear me? Get LOST!" Vanitas snarled before shoving Midoriya to the ground. He landed with a thud.
Vanitas marched away, not giving the kid another glance.
Midoriya lay on the ground where Vanitas and shoved him wondering where he went wrong. For most people, their quirks were a source of pride, and asking someone about theirs was common. Even when Midoriya was quirkless, and feeling trash, he always answered questions like that.
Could it be an appearance altering quirk? It could explain why he wears that helmet.
Midoriya stood up and brushed himself off. He looked sorrowfully at where Vanitas stormed off to.
Did I push him too far? He reminded me of Kacchan when he gets really angry…
He spent the next few hours searching for Vanitas, wanting to try and get on better terms with him. The conversation repeated over and over in Midoriya's head, and he got more and more desperate. He could not find him at all though.
I'm sorry Vanitas… I only wanted to help, but instead I hurt you…
Xerayn's Notes 4:
Yeah, I'm delaying Vanitas trying to describe his quirk for as long as possible, I seriously have no idea how I'm going to describe it. Last chapter got me thinking a lot and now I've actually realised where I'm going with the story, which is good lol. I'm heading back to school tomorrow so updates will be probably every two weeks at best, but I'll see. I've got exams soon so maybe I'll write more as procrastination.
Next chapter Sora will be a bit more prominent, as well as more UA stuff.
