fencer29: I'll try my best

(Line Break)

Izuku couldn't believe it. After two years of not having a quirk, two years being treated like nothing but a pile of garbage, and two years of his father barely talking to him he'll finally be treated like everyone else.

He was feeling all sorts of emotions. He wanted to laugh, cry, scream with joy. But there was one thing he wanted to do above all else. One thing that he should do before everything else.

"I should tell mom," Izuku realized.

And with that thought, he bolted straight home.

(Line Break)

Izuku ran home doing his best to avoid people, cars, and ignoring the complaints of everyone he passed. To be honest he didn't really hear them he was too busy thinking of how to tell his mother about his quirk.

'How do I tell her? Do I just say I have a quirk or do I show her? How do I show her in the first place? I can't really ask her to put me in danger. You know what it doesn't matter because I finally have a quir-', he was knocked out of his thoughts from what he saw.

Because what he saw was his house on fire.

Izuku couldn't believe what he was seeing. He doesn't want to believe it.

"Everyone move back," he heard an officer say to a crowd that was forming at the scene.

"Do you think everyone got out?", he heard a woman say.

"I don't know? It looks like the fire started on one of the middle floors hopefully, the inhabitants on the lower floors got out at least" a man answered her.

"Are there any heroes around to help put this out?" Someone questioned.

That's right, aren't there supposed to be at least one hero around to help. Isn't that what heroes are supposed to do, help people.

Izuku began looking around hoping to find any hero.

*BOOM*

He turned back to the burning building after he heard the loud boom, but calmed down a little when he saw the building still standing even if it was on fire.

'If that wasn't the building then where did that noise come from?', Izuku wondered as he looked for the source of the noise.

He kept turning his head until he saw two costumed figures fighting.

One of them being a floating pumpkin head wearing a blue cloak, a cyan wizard hat, white gloves, and holding a lantern. They're called Pyro Jack and their quirk is called Lantern Burn- Able to shoot flames out of any lantern. He's a B-ranked villain.

The other one is a red-haired girl wearing a dress made of plants. Her name is Marigold and her quirk is Chlorokinesis- able to control plants. An up-and-coming hero that made their debut a few days ago.

"Give up Pyro Jack, your days of crime are over," proclaimed Marigold doing a superhero pose.

"NYEH," the pumpkin-headed villain responded spraying fire at the hero.

Marigold controlled the plants on her dress to make a wall to protect her from the fire. The fire scorched the plant wall but it gave enough time for Marigold to dodge the flames.

Marigold then sent more vines trying to capture Pyro Jack but the villain sent more flames at the hero destroying the vines in the process. She cast a tornado of leaves at Jack to buy her some time to form a plan.

Pyro Jack charred the leaf tornado only for Marigold to trap him in vines finally capturing him.

Before the crowd could cheer for the hero a police officer went over and asked, "Marigold, we need your help! This building has been burning for a while and we need a quicker way for the firefighters to get to the fire."

Marigold turned to the officer and said, "Don't worry officer, I'll have my vines carry the firefighters and their equipment up the side of the building to the fire."

But before she could get started with her plans Pyro Jack set himself free from the vines and booked it away from the area.

Seeing this Marigold chased after the villain forgetting to help the firefighters.

"Marigold wait!" exclaimed an officer.

"I'm sorry but I can't let Jack get away!" shouted Marigold as she chased the villain.

"But what about the people that might still be inside the building!" proclaimed a crowd member.

"My family might still be in there," shrieked a woman.

After the woman said that it hit him, his mom might be in there.

Tears started to form from his eyes as he ran past the barricade and towards the building.

Seeing this an officer caught Izuku before he could get any closer to the building.

"Let me go! My mom might be in there, I need to save my mom!" cried Izuku as the officer started to carry him back behind the barricade.

"Calm down kid we're trying our best to save everyone," the officer told Izuku trying to calm him down.

"But my mom," bellowed Izuku as tears fell from his face.

"Listen, I bet your mom wouldn't want you to put yourself in danger like this. So please wait here until we put the fire out ok."

It took 15 minutes for the firefighters to put the fire out, 45 minutes to help the people that were stuck in the building, 5 minutes to find the apartment where the fire originated from, 10 minutes to collect the evidence, 5 minutes to remove all the corpses, and 5 seconds for Izuku to learn that his mom along with 3 other people died in the fire.

(Line Break)

The ride to the police station was short but Izuku didn't notice. All that was on his mind was that his mom, the only person that shown any love to him the past 2 years, was dead. He doesn't even feel anything, he didn't even think anything. He was just there, just aimlessly in the world.

The sound of whimpering brought him out of his thoughts. Sitting in the chair next to him was a middle-aged woman from his apartment building. He remembered that he wasn't the only one to lose someone in the fire.

The woman next to him lost her husband, an elderly man lost his daughter, and a teenage boy lost his older sister.

Izuku looked at each of them and saw they had different emotions. The woman was doing her best not to let tears pour from her eyes, the old man just looked frustrated, and the teenager just looked fine.

Izuku just wondered why he didn't share any of their emotions. He didn't know why he didn't feel sad, anger, or just accept that the fire happen. He just felt empty.

"And in other news, up and coming pro hero Marigold-" the sound of the hero's name brought their attention to the tv, "has captured the wanted criminal Pyro Jack this afternoon. We now go live to our field reporter, Makoto Ito who is on the scene with the heroine."

The scene on the tv switch to the inner city with a young-looking reporter standing next to Marigold.

"Thanks, Taeko. Now Marigold after debuting a few days ago you took down one of the most wanted villains. How are you feeling?" the reporter questioned.

"I feel pretty good and it feels pretty great to get scum like Jack in prison," answered the heroine.

"And I would also like to say thank you for that."

"You're welcome. It's just what any hero would've done."

"With this arrest, you will definitely be moving up in the hero rankings. Which would make you one of the fastest rising hero/heroine since All Might," the reporter said.

"Well it's been my dream since I was a little girl to become the number 1 since I was a little girl, and I will try and do everything in my power to make that dream a reality," said Marigold smiling at the camera.

"I knew it," said the old man drawing everyone's attention to him. "All these new heroes are all the same, all they care about is rising up in the rankings and the fame that comes with it."

"But the ranking is supposed to tell us who's the best heroes are right now," said the teen.

"Exactly!" the elderly man said angrily.

"Then what are you mad about then?" the teen questioned.

"Because it went from a profession to a god damn popularity contest."

"What's so bad about that?"

"You saw what's so bad about it! You saw where their priorities are, you saw how she would rather go after the villain when there were lives that needed to be saved!" The man ranted before continuing, "You now get to see the outcome of their selfish actions! While they get praised, people like me and many others have to go tell their loved ones why mommy or daddy doesn't come home anymore!"

No one dared to speak after that.

Some time passed before Izuku was called into the back.

"Hello, my name is Atsushi Au," the officer said.

"Hello," Izuku mumbled.

"I'm sorry about your mom, but I have to ask if there is someone I can contact to come and pick you up," Atsushi said the nicest way possible.

"My dad, but he's at work right now."

"Well do you know where he works?"

"Yeah, he works at Akira Insurance."

"Ok, let me make a few calls so your dad can come to get you."

Atsushi picked up the phone and called the insurance company. He asked for Izuku's father but they told him he hasn't shown up at all today. He asked if there was any other way to contact him and they give him Hisashi's number. Atsushi dialed the number but no one picked. He dialed the number a few more times but still, no one answered.

Atsushi left the room for a couple of minutes but then came back with a file.

"It seems that your father isn't picking up. Is there anyone else we can contact to look after you?" he asked.

"No."

"Ok, well here is what's gonna happen. Until we can get in contact with your father we're going to have to put you in an orphanage for the time being," Atsushi told Izuku.

(Line Break)

The ride to the orphanage from the police station was the longest ride that Izuku has ever been on. During that time all he could think about was how his life changed. He got a quirk but he lost his mother and no one can get a hold of his father. All he wanted to do at that moment was to just go to sleep and wake up hoping that the day was just a nightmare.

When they arrived at the orphanage a woman in her mid-40s, wearing a poofy red dress, with long flowing white hair, and green eyes was waiting for them at the front door.

"Hello, my name is Miss Azumi," the woman introduced herself.

Izuku didn't say anything, he just kept his head down.

"Hello, this is Izuku Midoriya and I'm officer Atsushi," Atsushi introduced them."He'll be staying in your care for a while until we can get a hold of his father."

"Hi, Izuku we're happy to have you in our care," Miss Azumi said sweetly.

Izuku just kept his head down not even bothering to respond to her.

"Well, I'm going to leave him in your care," the officer said, turning to leave.

"Alright, thank you, officer."

And with that Miss Azumi led Izuku into the orphanage.

Miss Azumi directed Izuku around the orphanage and pointed out the areas in the orphanage. She showed him the living area with two comfy recliners, a big couch, and a flat-screen hanging on the wall. She then showed him a big dining hall and told him the times when the meals are.

"Breakfast time starts at 6:45 am to 8:30 am, lunch starts at noon and ends at 1:30 pm, and we all have dinner at 5:45 pm."

She guided him to the back of the house to show him the orphanage's big backyard full of children playing.

"This right here is the backyard. Around this time I let the children run around and play to exert some of their energy and have some form of exercise." Azumi said. "Do you want to go out there and join them?"

"No," Izuku muttered, "I just want to go to sleep."

"That's ok," she said in a comforting tone, "let me show you the sleeping quarters."

Miss Azumi guided Izuku upstairs to the second floor to a colorful room full of beds.

"This is the boy's bedroom. The bed closest to the door is free, why don't you put your stuff away in the chest in front of the bed," Azumi instructed.

"I don't have anything. I lost all of my stuff in the fire," Izuku said sadly.

"Well, that's ok. We can go shopping tomorrow to replace some of the things you lost," Azumi suggested.

"I like that idea. Thank you."

"Now you get comfortable and I'll go see if there are any spare pajamas around for you to borrow for tonight," Azumi said, turning to leave, "I'll come and wake you for dinner, ok."

And after she said that she turned off the lights and closed the door when she left.

After she closed the door Izuku crawled under the covers, rested his head on the pillow, closed his eyes, and went to sleep.
