A Lack of Color

Chapter 2

Cyborg stared at him for a few seconds, as if studying him. "…Gar?"

Mark cocked an eyebrow at the man. "Um... me or him?" he said pointing to himself, and then proceeding to the nearly passed out boy wobbling behind him.

Cyborg pointed towards Mark. "You..."

"Uh, no... My name's Mark. Mark Dayton." He held out a hand for the halfteen half-machine to shake.

Cyborg reached out towards the hand, and inspected it. He bent it this way and that, while Mark got more and more uncomfortable with every second.

"Good to meetcha sir,"Mark stated rather quickly, pulling his hand away. He looked towards the other Titans that stood behind Cyborg. "Let's see..." he pondered, examining each one.

A finger jutted out towards to the Onyx-haired leader. "You're Robin, right?"

"Yes?"

"Okay... next... who's next..." His finger was thrown at the alien. "Starfire..." his finger slid to Cyborg and then Raven. "Cyborg. Raven."

They all nodded in unison. Mark beamed with pride, his eyes closing. He felt a pair of eyes examining him, and he looked around. He saw lucas greeting all of them... except one. Raven's eyes were squinted slightly, and she was staring straight at him.

Their eyes connected and Mark moved one step forward... as she retreated one step back. She averted her gaze and began to walk away.

He was about to say something when Lucas grabbed him and began introducing him to each Titan.Robin, who was in a black tux. Cyborg, who really couldnt dress up, and Starfire who wore a short black dress. When Mark turned back around, there was no trace of Raven anywhere.

Mark walked away from the group quickly muttering a small excuse. He sped off in the direction he watched her go.

About 5 minutes later, Mark found himself ata familiar grave. The one that had been created this morning. He realized how far they had all drifted from the grave.

He saw her then, kneeling before the stone with her black gown spread out around her. Her hair had been partly pulled back, while a bottom layer still stayed down and untouched.

Mark saw her hands clutching bunches of the dress, and she was shaking... holding in tears- though the bottom of her eyes were slightly brimmed.

"I will not cry Garfield... you wouldn't have wanted me to..." she whispered.

Mark strained his ears to hear what she was saying. She grunted. "Why was I so foolish? I should have helped. But I didn't... I stood there as time slowed... watching the building fall... I was too scared..." Her breath shook with tears. "It's not fair, is it? Your life cut short because of my stupid mistake..."

She stayed silent for a few moments, letting the wind wisk her hair around her face.

"I met two new guys today... College students.. they're your fans.Mark and Lucas. Lucas is a bit off, but Mark... he just reminds me of you. I guess it scares me a bit..."

She took another shuddering breath. "Garfield... I won't ever forget you... I won't forget your last words to me either... if you can hear me... my answer is yes... I do... so much... but I guess it's too late now..."

She slapped her forehead. "Why am I such an idiot?"

"You're not," Mark interrupted accidentally.

"Yes I ..." she turned her head to face him. "Were you listening to me?"

"It's not your fault either..." he said taking cautious steps forward.

"Leave me alone..." she warned, glaring.

"And it's perfectly okay to cry." He spoke in hushed tones.

He had reached her now, and as he kneeled down beside her, their eyes stayed connected.

A tear fell down her cheek, as she closed her eyes. Marks hand came up, wiping it away - atleast it was trying to before she slapped it away and shot up to her feet.

He stood up, challenging her -and winning by a whopping 5 inches. He tried to pull her into a hug but she pushed him away.

Unfortunatley, his strength far exceeded hers as well. He pulled her close, her arms separating them. She didn't want to. She tried not to. But she couldn't help herself. Tears silently poured from her eyes as her face layed against his shoulder.

She scolded herself... crying to this complete stranger was foolish to do. Letting him to touch her was moronic as well. what was worse... was that it was on Garfield's grave.

'The man who told me he loved me... right before he died. I was an idiot and pushed him away from me... telling him a fool for thinking that... that I loved him too. He was hurt, I know. But I put up my protective shield... I ran away from my love. I regret it... regret it all. Why am I such a fool? I love you Gar... I love you so much... but you're gone. Who else could love a retched thing like me? No one. That's who...'

The feel of Marks hand petting Her hair brought her out of my ramble. More tears slid from Ravens eyes as she squeezed them shut, trying to stop herself.

Finally, her tears subsided and her breathing was becoming normal. He wouldn't let her go.

Just a little bit later,Mark proved Raven wrong and pulled away from her. He brushed the loose bangs out of her face and gave her a warm smile..

'That smile... it's... it's Gar's.'

She forced a small smile back, and thena blush stained her cheeks realizing that they had just spent the past 5 minutes together, bodies even closer. Oh dear...

"T-thank you," she stuttered out, pushing away from him fully.

"No problem..."

They stood in an awkward silence for a few moments, until Mark spoke up.

"Well... I'll see you later then?"

She nodded nervously. "Sure..."

"Okay..." he said turning around. His head looked back towards her. "Hey... feel better okay? Everything happens for a reason, right?"

She shrugged. "I guess so... but I'm still going to be upset."

He turned around fully facing her again, pulling a peice of paper and a pen out. "You feel like this again," he started, scribbling on the paper, "Call me and we can talk... okay?"

She took the paper out of his hands nervously. ".. Okay..."

He smiled again. "Talk to you soon." And he walked out of the graveyard.
