...

"Any luck on Nicholas Flamel?" Hermione asked as she and Lucy walked along the corridor together back to the Gryffindor Tower from the student entrance of the castle.

The Christmas holidays were quickly coming to an end, but still many of the students were running about as if no one yet realized that classes started bright and early the next day.

"No." Lucy shook her head sighing as a brood of older students brushed past them. "We searched every book on history and legend in the library and we almost got expelled searching in the restricted section. I don't know...I'm beginning to think he wasn't that important." She shrugged. "Though Harry said he and Ron would search the library again today."

Hermione furrowed her brows. "Really? Shame! I was really hoping to have a lead on this by the end of the holidays." She started to turn the corner towards the stairway and suddenly stopped in her tracks.

Lucy barely managed to avoide a collision. "Hey!"

"Of course!...Why didn't I remember it before!" Hermione suddenly turned and high tailed it in the opposite direction of the Gryffindor Tower.

Lucy hurried to keep up with her. "What?" She asked tripping over the back of Hermione's suitcase as she ran. Hermione clenched her jaw.

"I'll tell you when we find the boys! Did you say they were in the library?" She asked turning to grab the handle of her trunk with both hands. Lucy nodded her head. "I think so, but what are you-?"

"This!" Hermione stopped again and bent to open her trunk. Again Lucy barely managed to stop herself from running into her friend.

"I can't believe it! I'm so stupid!" Hermione ranted as she pulled a worn out volume from beneath the stacks of her clothes. Lucy knelt down next to her as Hermione opened the book and flipped to a page near the middle of the tenth chapter.

"Here!...I checked this out weeks ago for a bit of light reading! Listen to this! Nicholas Flamel, renowed as the only known maker of the Sorceror's stone!" Hermione read excitely as she pointed to the passage with her index finger.

Lucy furrowed her brows together. "The what?"

"The Sorceror's Stone!" Hermione repeated. "Haven't you read about it yet?" She asked looking up to meet Lucy's eyes. Lucy shook her head.

Hermione dropped her gaze back to the book.

"Well the Sorceror's Stone is a legendary substance full of astonishing powers. It can transform any metal into pure gold and produces the Elixir of life which will make the drinker immortal."

"Immortal!" Lucy interrupted. Hermione gave her a sharp look. "The only stone known to be in existance belongs to Mr. Nicholas Flamel the alchemist who last year celebrated his 668th birthday." She continued to read.

Lucy leaned over her shoulder. "668?...He must be taking the Elixir of Life!" She exclaimed while scanning over the page Hermione was reading for more information.

Hermione nodded her head. "Yes, but don't you get it, Lucy? That's what Fluffy's guarding on the third floor underneath the trap door!" Lucy looked up to meet her gaze.

"The Sorceror's Stone." Hermione nodded her head. "Exactly! Come on! We have to tell Harry and Ron! They're probably nose deep in research right now!" She closed the book and shoved it back into her trunk.

Lucy got up quickly to follow her.

...

"Now...you two are sure about this right?" Ron whispered as the four of them attempted to run across the castle grounds later that night without being seen.

Hermione nodded her head. "I'm positive. There's no other explanation for it and it makes the most sense! All we have to do now is get some more information out of Hagrid. Since he's in on the scheme he should be able to tell us more than what the book told us" She rubbed her hands together to warm them.

Harry frowned. "If he's willing to talk to us that is." He muttered before raising a hand slowly to knock on the giant's large front door.

Lucy held her breath as heavy footsteps approached and the door opened from inside.

"Oh hullo! Sorry, don't mean to be rude, but I'm in no fit condition to be having visitors today." Hagrid started to close on the door on them when Lucy stuck her foot in the doorway.

"We know about the Sorceror's Stone, Hagrid!" She said, grimacing when the door almost crushed her foot.

Hagrid opened the door again. "Oh...well come in then." He ushered with one of his large beefy arms. The four first years obligingly followed him in.

"Hagrid...we think Snape is trying to steal it." Harry spoke up first as Hagrid went to tend to a cauldron in his fireplace. Lucy shut the door behind her.

"Snape?...Blimey, you're not still on about him are ya?" Hagrid grunted without turning from the fireplace.

Hermione sighed as a large wrinkly black dog padded down from a worn out sofa to sniff at the children's shoes. Lucy bent to pet him.

"Hagrid, we know he's after the stone! We just don't know why! We were hoping-."

"Snape is one of the professors protecting the stone! He's not about to steal it! Goodness me!" Hagrid snorted walking past Hermione and Lucy to stand between the four children.

"What?" Ron's jaw fell agape.

"But Hagrid-." Lucy started to protest.

"You heard me. Now go on! Get on back to bed! I'm a bit preoccupied today yeh four shouldn't be out right now anyways. It's after dark!" Hagrid tried to show them the door.

No one moved to leave the hut.

"Wait! You said he was ONE of the teachers?" Harry asked, his eyes bugging a little from their sockets.

Hermione nodded her head. "Of course! There are other things defending the stone, aren't there! Spells and enchantments!" She looked up at Hagrid with gleam in her eyes.

Hagrid reluctantly nodded his head. "That's right...but it's a waste of a bloody time if you ask me. Ain't no one going to get past Fluffy." He muttered.

Lucy sighed as the large dog tried to put his front paws in her lap. Grimacing at his weight she gently pushed him off. "How can you be so sure?" She asked as the dog tried to sniff her hair.

Hagrid chuckled. "Why because not a soul knows how, 'cept for me and Dumbledore." Hagrid pointed to himself. "Of course...I probably shouldn't have told yeh that." He mumbled and turned to look into his cauldron again when a scratching noise came from inside it.

The four first years turned as one towards the fireplace as Hagrid reached inside and quickly pulled something from the fire.

"Um Hagrid...what exactly is that?" Harry asked as the giant gently placed the object on the kitchen table. Everyone gathered around.

"Oh this uh...well it's uh...a..."

"Oh I know what this is!" Ron interrupted, his face lighting up briefly with recognition. "But Hagrid...how did you get one?" He turned to question the giant.

Lucy looked confused. "One what, Ron?" She asked as the egg wobbled a bit on the table. Hermione nudged her lightly in the ribs.

"It's a Dragon's egg, Lucy. I recognize it from one of my books!" She whispered so Harry and Ron wouldn't hear.

Lucy's eyes widened. "You'll have to let me borrow that one." She whispered back and Hermione smiled.

"Hermoine's right...I won this off of some stranger I met down at the pub. He seemed mightly glad to be rid of it as matter of fact." Hagrid frowned.

The egg continued to wobble. Harry started to lean forward on the table when the egg suddenly burst open releasing a tiny little creature only slightly larger than a common garden lizard.

"Whoa!...It's a little dragon!" Lucy leaned next to her brother in awe as the little creature chirped and tried to spread its wings.

"That's not just a dragon, Lucy! It's a Norwegian Ridgeback!" Ron beamed. "My brother Charlie works with these in Romania!"

Lucy looked up to meet his eyes. "Does he really?"

"Yes, isn't he beautiful?" Hagrid seemed completely in love with newborn baby dragon. Lucy and Hermione exchanged brief glances with each other as the dragon wobbled its way across the table towards Hagrid.

"Oh bless him! He knows his Mummy already!" Hagrid chuckled. Harry turned to smother a snigger as the giant reached to pet the dragon.

"Hello Norbert!" The dragon squealed.

"Norbert?" Ron raised an eyebrow.

"Yeah well he's got to have a name, dun he?" Hagrid shrugged. Ron concealed his smirk.

"I suppose so." Lucy smiled as she watched the dragon fascinatedly. Hermione started to lean over next to her when Norbert sneezed blowing an ember into Hagrid's beard.

Lucy turned to find a cup of water for him when she saw something, or rather someone standing outside peeking through the front windows of Hagrid's hut.

"Oh no!" She moaned when she recognized the figure. Harry turned at the dread he heard in her tone. "What?" He asked. Hermione pointed toward the window.

"It's Malfoy! He was spying on us from the window. He's going to tell McGonagall that we're out of bed!" She panicked.

Ron paled. "What do we do?" He asked.

Harry got up from the table. "We stop him." He clenched a fist and ran for the front door. The others quickly followed him.

"Be careful now!" Hagrid called after them while scooping up the little dragon into his hands. "Don't go getting yourselves into anymore trouble now!"

His warning fell on deaf ears. Hagrid sighed as the front door slammed. Fang whimpered and sank to the floor.
