After checking a few emails, Rachel found herself tiring. Eddie noticed the change in her posture and tried to persuade her to go back to bed, but Rachel of course resisted, and continued reading her emails. Noticing her really struggling to stay upright, Eddie knew he had to intervene now. "Rachel, you're not going to get better if you push yourself too hard. Go to bed."

Rachel was frustrated with herself, not even able to spend half an hour reading her emails. Yes, she felt a bit tired, but she was determined to continue. "Rachel seriously," he said, "you need to sleep."

Still, she refused. "Rachel you are off sick and not even meant to be working at all. I am currently your acting headteacher, and I'm telling you to go to bed."

By this point, Rachel could barely even see straight, and was starting to see that Eddie was right. She was too tired even to be annoyed with herself. "Are you pulling rank on me, Eddie?" she laughed.

Eddie was surprised by her reaction. She had always been so dedicated to the school, even to the point of the severe injuries she acquired in the fire. He did not expect her to cave in so easily to being asked to stop working. But she was starting to realise how much her dedication had cost her. She had denied herself any kind of personal life, but now she had Eddie, she was starting to see that she needed to find a better balance. Yes, Eddie had made decisions that she would not have made, but still, he was a damned good acting headteacher and her school would thrive under his leadership – especially now she could meddle just enough to guide him in the right direction. And so, she allowed him to pick her up and carry her to bed. Within moments, she was fast asleep, safe in the knowledge that Eddie was leading her school roughly in the direction she wanted it.
