By the time September came around, Rachel found she could just about stay awake for twelve hours, but by 6pm she was seriously flagging, and by 7pm she was in bed. "What if I just do mornings?" she said.
But Rachel knew what Eddie's response would be. And she knew that he was right. There was no way that once she was in work, she would be able to drag herself away at lunchtime. The last thing she wanted was for any of her staff to find her collapsed in her office. At least she was now well enough that she could be of some use. Eddie had been looking after her for all these weeks, but now it was her turn to look after him. He could put all his efforts into the school, then come home to dinner on the table. She thought about the books she could read, the documentaries she could watch, and she realised it might just about be tolerable for a month or so. And it would mean that she could get back to her school sooner. At least with Eddie in the house, she could keep on top of everything that was happening and be involved with the school unofficially and from a distance.
