March 24th, 2011 – Hope Meadows Ranch

After checking on the twins, who were both asleep in their cribs, Jack let Elizabeth know that he was running to town for supplies.

He walked out the front door and headed toward his truck, patting his pockets, then realized he'd left his phone in the bedroom. Going back in, he jogged up the stairs to their room, finding his phone on the bedside table.

As he began to leave, Jack could hear what sounded like someone crying, over the sound of the shower. Stepping into the bathroom, he found Elizabeth standing under the water, sobbing with her shaking hands covering her face.

Jack set his phone on the counter and opened the shower door.

"Beth, what's wrong."

She turned toward him, tears coursing down her cheeks, shaking her head.

Jack took one step into the large shower and asked again, "Beth, what is wrong?"

Dropping her hands, she answered, "I'm not ready for tomorrow."

Jack stepped under the water, fully clothed in his coat, jeans, shirt and boots, and wrapped his arms around her. With one arm around her waist and his other hand cradling the back of her head, he held her against him and let her shed all the tears and emotions necessary to grieve the loss; the loss of her ability to carry another child.

Elizabeth allowed herself to fully release the pain, allowing the onslaught of tears to flow, taking the grief with them. Leaning into Jack, his support and comfort protecting her from the depression that was threatening to engulf her, she felt the heaviness leave, as if the warm water washing over her was cleansing her from the horrible circumstance she had found herself in.

The loving embrace of her husband gave Elizabeth the strength needed to assist her with acceptance: acceptance of the fact that she couldn't change what had happened, it was no one's fault, and she was lucky to be alive, as well as the twins.

Anger was leaving her, replaced with a peace that only God could provide. Elizabeth could hear Jack's voice, though faint, as he prayed over her, asking God to give them strength and healing.

As the water washed her sadness away and the Lord's protection covered her, Jack felt her body begin to calm and relax as the river of tears began to slow. A few minutes passed with Jack still holding her firm against him before she finally took a step back, suddenly realizing what Jack had done.

"Jack, your clothes."

"I don't care about them," he said, reaching up and touching her cheek. "Are you okay?"

Stepping forward, she pushed him back out of the water, wrapping her arms around his waist and water soaked Carhartt coat. "I will be, Jack. Thanks to you." Leaning back and looking up to him, she added, "Your coat and boots will be ruined."

"Beth," he started, sliding his fingers into her wet hair, "I seriously do not care about that. They'll be fine or I'll get new ones. I want to know that you're alright."

"I'm alright."

Jack leaned down, covered her lips with his, and moved his arms down to her waist, pulling her in tight against him.

"You are all that matters, Baby. And the twins. And that's that," he added, kissing her nose.

Elizabeth reached up to his coat and pushed it off his shoulders. Keeping it in her hands, she hung it on a hook on the far shower wall to let it dry. Returning to Jack, she began to unbutton his shirt and pushed it off, letting it drop to the floor.

Moving her hands to his buckle, her eyes moved up to Jack's, who was looking at her with an obvious wanting desire.

"Beth," Jack said, his voice catching in his throat when she unzipped his pants, her hand brushing against his already rock-hard erection.

She knelt down, picking up one of his legs and began to try to pull his boot off. Jack reached for the closest wall to catch his balance as she removed it. Repeating it for the other one, she pulled the second boot and tossed them both into the corner, out of the stream of water.

"Beth," Jack repeated as she stood, her eyes searching his, her name barely above a whisper, a breath of air.

"Jack."

"Beth, what are you doing?"

"Helping you out of these wet clothes," she answered, a sly grin covering her face.

"Isn't it too soon?"

"The doctor told me at my six-week checkup that as long as I'm feeling okay, I can return to normal activities in another week."

"Really?"

"Yes," she answered, pushing his jeans off his hips.

"And you're feeling fine?"

"I'm feeling fine," she replied, smiling, the look in her eyes boring into Jack's soul.

Jack grabbed the bottom of his soaked pantleg and pulled, trying to get them off. After a bit of a struggle, he got one leg out, then proceeded to the second. Finally getting his jeans off, his underwear coming off with them, Jack stood before her in all his glory, more than ready to make love to his wife.

Quickly closing the gap between them, Jack cupped her face in his hands, sliding his fingers into her hair, and covered her lips with his. Quickly taking her mouth, his tongue grazing across her teeth and mingling with her own tongue, Jack kissed her for what seemed like forever, until they both needed to take a breath. Their hearts were racing, their bodies ached for one another, heat rose in their most private places.

Elizabeth wrapped her arms around him, pulling him to her wet body, feeling his hardness press against her stomach. Wanting him badly, but wanting to take it slow and make it last, she kissed him, attempting to keep them milder, but completely unsuccessful as they grew fervent and heated.

Jack moved his lips across her cheek and down her neck, sucking and nibbling along the way, his hands wandering and exploring her body. Stopping on her shoulder, he pressed his lips against her soft, wet skin, his tongue grazing her flesh, tasting the clean water that still covered her, longing to be closer yet.

Moving his mouth to her ear, he whispered, "I want to take you to bed."

His breath in her ear sent tingles through her body. "Take me," she simply replied, reaching over and turning the water off.

Sliding an arm behind her back and one behind her knees, he scooped her up into his arms. Leaving a trail of water across the tiles and carpet, he carried her to the bed, lowered her onto the mattress, then moved over Elizabeth, lowering himself onto her. Their bodies, wet and hot for each other, drew together like magnets, like there had been no time apart. But at the same time, as if they had spent a lifetime separated from one another.

Moving together as one, knowing exactly what the other needed, they both reached the necessary release they had yearned for, collapsing into each other's arms. Jack laid on his side, drawing her in against him, her back to his chest, wrapping his arms tightly around her.

Moving one hand up, he pulled her hair back, pressing his lips to her neck.

"I love you, Beth," he whispered into her ear.

Elizabeth turned her head, her eyes meeting his, "I love you, too." A single tear rolled down her cheek.

Jack wiped it away with his thumb, cupping her cheek in his hand. "Are you alright? Did I hurt you?" Concern filled his eyes.

"No, I'm fine. I just needed to be with you so much." She rolled over in his arms, facing him.

Jack ran a finger along the side of her face, down to her chin, tipping her head, taking her lips with his. It only took one touch from him to fan her flame into a roaring inferno, his soft yet firm lips fit with hers like two perfect puzzle pieces, designed to fit together. Everything about them fit.

Elizabeth had known no other way, no other man, only that everything with him felt right...perfect. Jack had known others. But the first time he'd been with Elizabeth had shown him that every other woman had never fit, they had never been a match, two puzzle pieces forced together but never connecting. This had never changed for Jack, but had only added to the picture, each piece coming together, creating an image he'd only dreamed about. This woman was the center of that dream, that image created and managed by God. And Jack knew it; he would never forget it.

March 25th, 2011 – University Hospital

Elizabeth waited in the room, her hospital gown on, Jack by her side. He held her hand, brushing his thumb across her knuckles, staring down at them.

Both of their hearts ached, sharing a loss of something they didn't have but both wanted. The silence in the small waiting room was deafening, as if it was screaming in their faces. The tears hadn't made an appearance yet, but the emotions were just the same.

"How are you doing?" Jack finally asked, unable to take the silence any longer.

"I'm alright. This is necessary, right?" She said in more of a statement than a question, forcing a small smile.

"Yes," he agreed, smiling back. "I love you. I don't think I've thanked you. So...thank you."

"There's no need for that."

"But I know what you're giving up."

"We're giving up."

Jack kissed her hand and nodded.

"The alternative would possibly be giving up much more, and I know that."

"We're ready for you if you're ready, Mrs. Thornton," the nurse said from the other side of the curtain.

Jack pulled it back and the couple stood.

"You can wait for out in the family waiting room," the nurse said to Jack. "Someone will come get you when we're finished."

Jack took Elizabeth's face in his hands, not caring that the nurse was watching. "I'll be here waiting," he said, then kissed her hard.

"Okay," was all she could get out without breaking down again.

"I love you."

"I love you, too."

…..

"Beth?"

Hearing Jack's voice in the darkness, Elizabeth tried opening her eyes. The light above forced her to close them, over and over, until her eyes adjusted to the brightness.

"Beth?"

Elizabeth turned her head slightly, finding Jack at her side, holding her hand.

"Hey," she replied, in a low, scratchy voice.

"Hello, Elizabeth," the nurse said. "Your throat might feel a little sore for a short while from the breathing tube."

Elizabeth nodded, her eyes finally fully opened, looking between Jack and the lady dressed in the green scrubs.

"Do you feel any pain?"

Elizabeth assessed herself quickly, then shook her head. "No, not right now."

"Good. We'll keep you here for another hour, then as long as you're feeling okay, we'll let you get home. I'll come back later and go over everything with you."

Elizabeth nodded.

"Thank you, Ma'am," Jack responded.

After the nurse was gone, Elizabeth turned to Jack. "It's over?"

Jack nodded, "It's over." The sadness in his eyes matched hers.

Elizabeth looked up to the ceiling, fighting her body's desire to cry. She was tired of crying. She just wanted happiness.

Jack remained at her side, holding her hand, talking with her when she wanted, being silent when she needed.

"How are you doing? Still feeling alright?" The nurse asked, stepping into their room.

"Yes, I feel fine," Elizabeth answered.

"Alright, let's get you folks out of here and on your way."

After going over all the dos and don'ts that Elizabeth had to follow for the next week, including not picking up anything heavy, no sex, use a heating pad on her stomach if needed, she was wheeled out the door to where Jack was waiting with the SUV, door open, ready to help her in.

…..

Once settled in bed, a fire in the fireplace burning, the TV on with a DIY show playing quietly, Elizabeth quickly dozed off with the heating pad across her stomach.

When she woke two hours later, Jack was sitting on the bed, Peyton in his arms sucking on a bottle and Colton laying by his side. Jack was lost in a horse training show and hadn't realized she'd woken up.

Elizabeth reached over, gently laying her hand on Colton's chest, and watched him sleep. Seeing the movement out of the corner of his eye, Jack turned to look at her.

"Hello, Beautiful."

Smiling, she replied, "Hello, Cowboy."

"Do you want to finish feeding her?"

"Sure," Elizabeth carefully sat up and waited for Jack to place Peyton into her arms. "I'll just nurse her," she stated as Jack began to hand her the bottle. "How were they at your mom and Frank's?"

"They said they were perfect angels," he responded, setting the bottle on the side table.

"Of course, they were," Elizabeth replied, looking down at her daughter and smiling.

"How are you feeling?"

"I feel fine," she answered, keeping her gaze on Peyton.

"Good," Jack replied, sliding down on the bed to lay beside Colton. Draping his arm across his son, Jack closed his eyes and quickly fell asleep.

When Peyton was finished eating, Elizabeth looked over to Jack, who was still sleeping, then back to her daughter.

"Well, baby girl. What now?" Elizabeth chuckled.

Looking over the situation, she decided to scoot forward, little by little, then carefully laid back into her pillow and slowly lowered Peyton down beside her. Having felt only a slight tinge of pain, Elizabeth rolled to her side, looked over her husband and children, then closed her eyes.

…..

Jack was in the kitchen, the twins in their bouncy chairs on the counter, dinner in the oven. He was standing in front of the babies, his guitar in his hands and singing to them, when Elizabeth walked into the room.

"Have a nice nap?" Jack asked, smiling, swinging his guitar to his back.

"Nap? I feel like I just slept for three days."

"Well," he looked up to the clock on the wall, "you did sleep for five hours."

Elizabeth rubbed her eyes, "Really? Why didn't you wake me?"

"Because the nurse said you needed to rest...so rest you did."

Elizabeth rounded the island and took her place at Jack's side.

"You don't need to stop singing," she said, looking up at her husband.

Jack pulled his guitar back to the front, then began singing. The twins stared at him, wide-eyed, mesmerized.

"Goodnight baby, sleep tight my love
May God watch over you from above
Tomorrow I'm workin' what would I do
I'd be lost and lonely if not for you

So close your eyes
We're alright for now

I've spent my life travelin'
Spent my life free
I could not repay all you've done for me

So sleep tight baby
Unfurrow your brow
And know I love you
We're alright for now
We're alright for now"

"Jack, look!" Elizabeth exclaimed, motioning toward Colton.

Jack looked down at the baby who was smiling at him.

"Oh, my gosh!" Jack stated.

Colton's smile faded, and Jack began to sing again, causing his son to smile once more.

"Grab your phone," Elizabeth said. "We need a photo of this. He has your dimples!"

Jack reached into his pocket, retrieved his phone and handed it to Elizabeth.

She took photo after photo as Jack sang, Colton's smile was only growing.

Elizabeth watched Peyton, but the little girl had no reaction other than her normal stoic face and wide eyes.

"Come closer to Peyton, Jack."

Jack moved toward his daughter, repeating the sweet song once more while strumming his guitar. Peyton only watched; her eyes wide.

"Well, we can't expect them to do the same things at the same time," Jack stated, trying to comfort them both.

"Yes, I know. And Colton just now started it."

Jack nodded, "Did you get some good photos?"

Elizabeth brought them up on the small screen and they scrolled through, commenting on the extra cute ones.

March 27th, 2011 – Hope Meadows Ranch

Still a bit sore from her procedure, Elizabeth decided to stay home from church. Jack remained home with her to help with the twins.

"Ma just called," Jack said, walking into the nursery where Elizabeth was nursing Peyton. "She wanted to have lunch with everyone so I told her we could do it here so you wouldn't have to go anywhere. I hope that was alright."

"Of course, Jack. I would love to see everyone. Did you call Rosie and Lee, too?"

"No, but I'll text Lee right now," Jack said, pulling his phone from his pocket.

Once finished, he returned his phone and picked up Colton who was lying in bed staring up at the ceiling.

"Hey there, big boy," Jack said, holding him to his shoulder. "These two are growing so fast. It's remarkable."

"Yes, they'll be running around here before we know it," Elizabeth replied, shifting Peyton to her shoulder, patting her back.

"Oh, don't say that. I won't be able to keep up with them then," he laughed. "What would you like for lunch for everyone?"

"I would like to make it. It's about time I get back to all my normal duties."

Jack crossed the room and sat on the arm of the chair. Holding Colton in one arm, he ran his free hand down the back of her hair.

"Beth, you don't have duties here. I hope you know that."

"I know. I was just saying that I want to try to get back to my normal routine. I want to make the lunch."

"Okay, but please let me help you. You tell me what to do, and I'll do it. I'm at your service, Mrs. Thornton," he said, bending down and kissing her forehead.

"How can I pass that up?" She replied, giggling.

…..

Wyatt barked at the door at the sound of a car pulling up.

"They're here," Jack called out after peering out the window.

He was standing at the opened door when his mother and Frank walked up, followed by Tom, Sam, and the kids.

"Hey, Ma," Jack said, hugging Charlotte.

"Hi, Jack. So good to see you. Now where are my grandbabies?"

Chuckling, he answered, "They're in their swings in the kitchen with Beth. Hi, Frank," he said, shaking his hand.

"Hi, Jack. Thanks for doing this for your mother. She's been bugging me all week wanting to get together.

"No, problem. Glad to do it."

"Uncle Jack!" Luke yelled, jumping into Jack's arms.

"Hey, Kiddo. Wow, you're getting big."

"I know! I grew a whole inch."

"Wow, a whole inch. That's amazing. Hey, Brother. Happy birthday. Sorry we missed it," Jack said, moving Luke to his hip so he could hug Tom.

"Hey, Jack," Tom replied, returning the hug. "Don't worry about it. You guys had other things going on."

"Yes, this past week was a bit emotional."

"I'm sure it was," Tom replied, patting his brother's back before stepping into the house.

Jack lowered Luke to the floor, then turned to hug Sam. "Hey, Sis."

"Hi, Jack. How's Beth doing?"

"Actually, she's doing alright."

"Good. I'm glad to hear that."

Savannah stopped in front of Jack, looking up to him and grinning.

Jack smiled back then signed, "Why are you looking at me like that?"

"You look different."

"I do?"

"You look tired."

Jack laughed, then signed, "Well, I am tired. The twins are a lot of work."

Savannah laughed, then wrapped her arms around her uncle's waist.

Jack hugged her, running his hand down the back of her long blonde hair. Feeling something around his leg, Jack looked down to find Austin wrapped around it.

"Hey there, Buddy," Jack said picking him up and taking Savannah's hand. Once inside, he kicked the door closed.

"Unc Jack. Hi, Unc Jack."

"How are you, Austin?"

"I good. I want down."

Laughing, Jack lowered him to the floor and watched him take off with Wyatt on his heels, followed closely by Savannah.

"Beth, you look wonderful," Sam said, wrapping her in an embrace.

"Sam, so do you," Elizabeth said, stepping back and holding Sam's arms out. "This dress is amazing."

"Thank you. I got it at that new store down the street from Hannigan's."

"I've been wanting to go there and check it out. We'll have to go sometime."

"Absolutely. Let me know and I'll come over and get you. There was another dress I wanted to get."

"I think these babies have doubled in size," Charlotte called out, picking up Peyton. "Oh, my goodness, this sweet girl."

With Colton in his arms, Frank crossed the room and took a seat at the table. The couple was side by side talking to the babies, when Charlotte exclaimed again.

"Look at that smile," she said, looking over to Colton. "When did he start doing that?"

"A couple of days ago," Elizabeth answered.

Turning her attention to Peyton, Charlotte began talking in a silly voice and making funny faces and sounds.

Jack laid his hand on her shoulder and said quietly, "She's not smiling yet, Ma."

Charlotte looked up and saw the concern in her son's face, "Oh, it's still early. Not all babies develop exactly the same."

Jack squeezed her arm, "We know...but still."

Charlotte laid her hand on top of her son's, "Jack, she'll be fine." The look on her face was convincing and her voice was stern.

"I know, Ma," Jack said with a forced smile.

A knock at the door caught Jack's attention and he turned to go answer it.

"Hey, Jacko!" Lee shouted once he saw his friend at the door.

"Hey, Brother," Jack pulled him into a tight, back slapping man hug. "Hi, Rosie," he added, hugging her next. Kneeling down, he peeked into the carrier that Lee was holding. "Wow, she's huge."

"All she does is eat and sleep," Lee stated, setting the carrier onto the floor.

"I understand that. Try having all of that but doubled," Jack replied in between making faces at Noel.

"Nope, I'll leave the overachieving multi-births to you, my brother," Lee said, slapping Jack on the back.

Joining the others in the kitchen, Jack looked around, a huge smile across his face. His mom and Frank were still at the table with the twins, Sam was helping Elizabeth with the finishing touches on lunch, Tom was sitting on the floor with Austin on his lap, watching Savannah and Luke play with Wyatt. Like his house, Jack's heart was full. He now had everything he'd ever dreamed of, as well as a few things he never knew he wanted...needed.

…..

"Did everyone get on their way?" Elizabeth asked, moving the heating pad onto her stomach.

"Yes, Ma and Frank just left."

"Sorry I came up here before they left. I think I just overdid it today."

Jack laid across the bed on his stomach, and took her hand in his. "No need to apologize, everyone understood." Jack brushed his fingers across her knuckles, "Is that helping?"

"Yes, it is. This and the Tylenol."

"Good. Did you have fun today?"

"Oh, yes. It was wonderful having everyone here."

"Well, the twins are down, how about we get some sleep while we can."

"Sounds perfect."

March 28th, 2011 – Hope Meadows Ranch

Jack rolled over and looked at the clock. 5:17 am. Sitting straight up, he looked over to Elizabeth, who was still sleeping. He carefully got out of bed and rushed to the nursery to check on the twins. Looking into Peyton's crib, he watched her chest rise and fall, still sound asleep. Moving to Colton's crib, seeing he was also asleep, Jack stood with his hands on his hips, watching his son.

"Did you just feed them?" Elizabeth whispered, entering the room.

Jack turned his head, shook it, and smiled.

"You mean...?"

"Yep, they both slept through the night," he replied quietly. Motioning to the door with his head, he took Elizabeth's hand in his and they walked out. "Let's let them sleep. Maybe they are finally getting on a matching schedule."

"Oh, I could only hope," she replied, laying her head against his arm as they walked back to their room. "And it only took two months."

…..

April 3rd, 2011 – Hope Meadows Ranch

"I just can't get her to smile or talk or anything. All she does is stare," Elizabeth said, standing over their daughter.

"I'm sure she will in her own time, Beth."

"Jack, Colton has been smiling for over a week. Why isn't she?" She was beginning to raise her voice, the gripping fear inside her forcing the tension to go.

"I don't know, Beth," Jack answered, feeling helpless at not being able to comfort Elizabeth or help his daughter.

"But what do we do? How do we help her?" She asked, her voice slightly louder and higher.

"Beth, I don't know how to help her." Desperation was beginning to take over him. The anxiety from his wife was grabbing him, strangling him.

"Don't you remember what the doctor said, Jack?" Elizabeth said, a sharp harshness in her words.

"Yes, Elizabeth. I remember it every single day," Jack snapped back. "I was there, remember. I was there that entire day, waiting, just waiting for any news at all. Going crazy. I remember every damn word that doctor told me."

Elizabeth stopped and turned to Jack, eyes wide, lips quivering. Jack was standing straight, his arms at his side, his hands balled in fists. Elizabeth's gaze moved to his eyes that were welled with tears threatening to spill over.

"Jack," she said softly, apologetically.

Instantly relaxing from the sound of her voice, he moved toward her, wrapping his arms around his wife and held her against him. "I'm so sorry, Beth. I'm sorry I yelled."

"It's okay, Jack. I'm sorry, too."

"No, Beth. I don't know why I did that."

"Because it's all so overwhelming," Elizabeth said, her voice now calm.

"Yes, it is. Let's just give her a little more time. Worrying about it isn't going to help any of us."

"I know."

"I'm so sorry," he said again, brushing his hand down the back of her head and along the length of her long auburn hair.

"Me, too."

…..

April 5th, 2011 – Hope Meadows Ranch

With the stress of Peyton's development still secretly clutching onto both of them, Jack was relieved when calving season had begun. He was looking forward to getting back out there, doing something to get his mind off the potential future that might be laying before his tiny daughter. The thought of her struggling with anything in life made Jack sick to his stomach and he didn't want to think about it any longer.

After saddling up Harley, Jack climbed on and steered him toward his mother's. Normally trailering him over, the unusually warm weather afforded him to take advantage of it and get some quiet time alone. The duo walked slowly across the field, both enjoying the fresh air and views.

Harley's ears were at full attention, popping back and forth, listening to all of the new spring sounds that floated around them.

Jack knew Harley was feeling a little fresh after being cooped up all winter, but he also fully trusted his mount, knowing Harley would never do anything to harm him.

Fresh, young grass could be seen reaching up toward the sun through the thin layer of snow that remained; snow that would be melted by the end of the day.

Young grass was a horse's favorite. So much so, that they would eat themselves sick on it. Jack made a mental note to ask Tom to help him herd the mares to the dry lot once they were finished checking on the cows.

As they neared his mother's ranch where he was to meet Tom, he could see his brother saddling his horse next to his trailer.

"Good morning, Tom."

"Jack, I thought you'd trailer over," he said, returning his attention to tightening his saddle.

"It was so nice out, I thought I'd take advantage of the weather and let Harley stretch his legs a little longer."

Tom glanced up to his brother, gaging his expression. "Is that all?"

Knowing how well his brother knew him, Jack replied, "I needed some time alone...to think."

Tom stopped what he was doing and turned to face Jack. "What's going on?"

"Remember what the doctor said about Peyton when she was born? About being deprived of oxygen?"

Nodding, Tom replied, "Yes. Why? What's wrong?"

"Colton is smiling and has started his little babbling. But Peyton...nothing. No expressions, no talking."

"It's still early, Jack."

"I know, but knowing that there's a chance of something being wrong...it just eats at you, Brother. Beth and I are starting to yell at each other. The anxiety is getting to us both."

"Come here," Tom motioned for Jack to follow him.

Sliding off Harley, he tied him to Tom's trailer, then followed his brother to a bench that sat under a nearby tree.

"I'm going to share something with you that I've never shared with anyone."

"Okay?" Jack said, turning sideways on the bench to face his brother.

"When Savannah was born, Samantha and were thrilled like no other. New parents, beautiful perfect baby girl. Until one day when Sam dropped a metal pot on the floor right next to Savannah, who was sleeping in her swing. Savannah didn't even jump. Sam froze."

"Yes, I remember that."

"Okay, but what you don't know, is that we were so scared. Neither of us knew anything of this silent world that our daughter was being forced to live in. We began blaming each other for her disability, for not being able to communicate with her, even down to who left a dish out. Everything turned into a fight because we were both so scared."

"I'm so sorry, Tom. I had no idea."

"No one did. It got so bad that one evening when I came inside from chores, Sam and the baby were gone, bags packed gone."

"What? Why didn't you tell me?"

"You were fighting your own demons, Jack. I couldn't hand you my troubles, too."

"Tom...man...I'm so sorry."

"Jack, this wasn't your issue. This was mine to deal with."

"What happened?"

"I found Sam at her parent's house and we went out and talked while her parents watched Savannah. We finally accepted that it wasn't either of our faults. Savannah was just born that way. We learned ASL and other ways to communicate with our daughter. We learned how to navigate through her world. We will never know what it's like to be her, to live in a world of complete silence, but she is no less our daughter for it."

"Of course not."

"She still a beautiful angel that we are blessed to have. Our lives are better with her in it. Don't you feel the same way about her? I know you have always had a special bond with her."

Jack nodded, "Yes, I am better knowing her."

"Okay. If...and it's a big if...Peyton has a few issues, will she be less to you?"

"Absolutely not!"

"Will you be less?"

Jack paused. "No."

"Will you be stronger? Better?"

"Probably."

"Is she still a blessing?"

"Everyday."

"Then you thank God for blessing you with her. No matter what happens. It's out of your control and only in God's. Right?"

Looking down at his hands, Jack nodded. "Yes."

"Sam and I will continue to pray each and every day that Peyton is just fine. But you and Elizabeth need to stay strong...for each other and for Peyton. Don't let this damage what the two of you have."

Jack nodded.

Tom reached over and laid his hand on Jack's shoulder. "God's got this."

Jack looked to his brother, wondering how and when he'd become so grown up and wise. Realizing just how much he'd missed while he was living out his own personal hell, never seeing that Tom had been living through his own.

"Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. That's from 1 Thessalonians 5 and Sam and I read that verse out loud every day for a month when we first found out about Savannah." Squeezing Jack's shoulder, he continued, "So rejoice for the lives you were blessed with, pray always, thank the Lord for everything, good or bad. He will never give you more than you can handle. You already know that."

Nodding, Jack agreed. "How did this happen?" Jack asked, smiling and laying his arm across his brother's, laying his hand on Tom's shoulder.

"How did what happen?"

"You becoming the "big" brother."

Laughing, Tom replied, "Life. We have lived a lot of life."

Looking down at the bench, Jack agreed, "That we have. More than most."

Tom nodded in agreement. "Are you ready to check some cows?"

Standing, Jack answered, "Yes, let's do some cowboying."

Tom laughed and stood, staring at his brother. "I love you, Jack."

Jack immediately moved in and wrapped him in a bear hug, "I love you, too, Brother."

…..

Elizabeth glanced out the kitchen window at the sound of pounding hooves. She smiled when she saw Jack and Tom, running their horses on either side of the herd of mares, driving them toward the large dirt lot near the barn. Mud was flinging up around them, steam rose from the horse's bodies from the mix of sweat and the cool air, Jack and Tom were smacking their ropes against their chaps. It was a scene pulled straight from the movies.

She loved watching them, seeing the smiles covering both of their faces. Jack steered off to the side, blocking a young mare that attempted to break free from the herd and turned her back in toward the large open double gates.

She could hear them calling out commands to the seasoned mares who guided the younger ones into the pen. Wyatt was at their heels now, having been in the house when Jack left, Elizabeth let him out and he gladly took his role as herd dog and helped his owner with the final horses.

"Atta boy," Jack called out as Wyatt jumped up and down next to Harley. "That deserves an extra treat when we get back to the house."

Excited with this, Wyatt spun around in three circles then began walking alongside Harley.

"Whoo!" Tom called out. "That was exhilarating."

The smiles on the brothers' faces said it all. Elizabeth was watching from the front porch now as Jack hopped off Harley and closed and locked the gates. Their laughter could be heard from across the field as Jack remounted Harley.

Elizabeth stood, watching, smiling, wrapping her arms around herself. Her worries evaporated up to the Lord as she breathed in the fresh air, the smell of pine needles and melting snow, the slight musk of horse sweat from the large herd in the pen.

She looked on as the two brothers sat on their horses, staring at the mares, lost deep in a conversation. She saw Tom nod her way, motioning to Jack. Jack turned his head, smiled even bigger, then tipped his hat to his wife. Elizabeth raised her hand and waved, returning the genuine joy filled smile.

April 8th, 2011 – Sully Schools

Jack and Elizabeth found two seats close to the front of the auditorium, the perfect spot to watch the play. With the twins at his mother's house for the entire night, Jack and Elizabeth were enjoying a much needed night out alone.

The twins had continued to sleep through the night and that past Wednesday for her birthday, Charlotte had requested to keep the twins overnight sometime. With the timing being perfect, Jack and Elizabeth were able to watch the opening night of Rosemary's spring play without worries of hurrying home.

Elizabeth watched Jack as he read through the program.

"Grease is a great movie, this should be good," Jack said, keeping his eyes on the paper.

Elizabeth tried to hold back her laugh, but a giggle slipped out.

Looking toward his wife, Jack asked, "What's so funny?"

"It was a Broadway play before it was a movie."

"Oh," Jack laughed. "Well, then, it should be really good."

Still laughing, she replied, "I'm sure it will be since Rosie is putting it on."

"Hey, guys," Lee said quietly, passing in front of them to the empty seat next to Jack. "Thanks for saving me a seat."

"Hey there, Brother," Jack stated, patting Lee's leg.

Elizabeth leaned over Jack and asked, "Where's Noel?"

"My cousin's daughter is babysitting."

"Oh, that's great. She's a sweet girl."

The lights in the auditorium were turned down and Rosemary stepped out onto the stage.

"Good evening, everyone. Thank you for joining us on opening night of Grease, performed by the Sully High School drama club."

Rosemary continued through her spiel and introductions before leaving the stage, and signaling for the red velvet curtains to rise.

The room went dark as the curtain opened; applause could be heard as voices began to sing and the spot light spread across the stage.

…..

"That was fantastic," Jack exclaimed as he hugged Rosemary backstage after the play.

"Yes, Sweetie," Lee added, wrapping his arms around his wife. "That was amazing."

"Thank you, guys. The kids put in a lot of hard work this year." Motioning toward Elizabeth, she added, "and the backdrops and props this year were beyond anything I could have come up with. Thank you, Liz."

Hugging Rosemary, Elizabeth responded, "You're welcome. I had a lot of fun with it."

"Where would you guys like to eat tonight?" Lee asked, taking Rosemary's hand in his.

"How about Johnny's?" Jack asked.

"Johnny's would be perfect," Lee replied. "What do you two think?" He asked the women.

"Sounds good to me," Rosie answered.

"I've always wanted to try it," Elizabeth added.

"Johnny's it is," Lee said, leading the group out the side door and toward the parking lot.

The evening was thoroughly enjoyed by all; great food and laughter filled their time as they got caught up on life. A few tears were shed, a prayer prayed, words of support spoken between close friends.

Hugs, kisses and a final prayer shared ended their evening together as they said their goodbyes in the parking lot. Getting into their respective vehicles, they followed one another home until Lee turned into their driveway and Jack continued on to their own.

…..

"That restaurant is fantastic," Jack said, tossing his keys onto the kitchen counter. "My steak was perfect. How was your chicken?"

"Best I've ever had."

"And Rosie's play was a lot of fun. I wouldn't mind going to her next one."

"I think she has one in the fall," she replied, looking around the house.

"What are you looking for? Is something wrong? Are you feeling alright?"

"I'm fine, Jack. I just miss the babies."

Jack crossed the room and pulled her into him, wrapping his arms behind her. "I do, too. But let's just enjoy this time alone and we'll go get them first thing in the morning."

Elizabeth nodded.

"I'm going to run up and take a shower," Jack said, kissing her cheek, then jogged up the steps.

…..

Jack was standing at the dresser in his towel when Elizabeth walked up behind him, wrapping her arms around his chest. She pressed her lips against his back, leaving a trail of kisses across his tattoo.

Jack sucked in a breath of air when he felt her moist lips on his skin. Closing his eyes, he tipped his head back and clutched onto her hands that were on his firm pecs. Elizabeth could feel his heart begin to race under her hand as she continued to kiss him.

Lowering one arm, she grabbed the edge of his towel, untucked it, and let it fall to the floor. Jack turned in her arms, his eyes scanning her body.

"Where are your clothes?" He asked.

"Oh, I can go put them back on if you'd prefer," she said, taking a step back.

"I do not prefer," he replied, stepping toward her and pulling her back to him with an arm around her waist. "I do not prefer at all. I prefer this."

Jack backed to the edge of the bed and sat down. Elizabeth sat on his lap, straddling him, one knee on either side of his hips. Covering his lips with hers, she forcibly kissed him, her tongue searching for his.

Jack's hands moved across her back and into her hair, pulling her in for an even deeper kiss. Wrapping his arm around her waist, he stood, and while keeping her tightly against him, he turned and laid her across the bed, moving over her.

Even with no fire in the fireplace, the heat engulfed them from the fires burning within. The aching anticipation to feel him inside her was too much and Elizabeth gripped his hips and pulled him down, receiving him as he entered her fully.

Energy, electricity, and a burning urgency flowed through them as Jack slowly moved inside her. He watched her face for any sign of discomfort but only saw pleasure. Jack ran his thumb across her lip, pulling it down, then took her mouth with his, grazing his tongue across hers.

Elizabeth moved her fingers into his hair, pulling him closer, desperately wanting more of him. Moving her hands to his back, she could feel his muscles flex and twist as he moved, bringing her closer and closer to the desired release as she dug her fingers into his flesh. His skin tightened and relaxed over his muscular back, sending Elizabeth's insides into a frenzy. Wrapping her legs around him, she drew him in deeper, building the immense sensation inside even quicker. The rhythmic motions of his hips, keeping time with her heart, sent her into an earth-shattering orgasm. Feeling her tighten around him, hearing her moans, and watching her body's reaction to his movements, had Jack soon following her.

Dropping down beside her, both covered in sweat, hearts racing, breaths quick and short, Elizabeth rolled to him, dropping her arm across his chest.

Jack ran his hand down her cheek, looking down at her. "Do you feel okay?"

"Yes," she replied, looking up to him and smiling. "More than okay."

"Good," he said, a smile growing across his face. "It's been too long."

"Yes, it has. But wow, worth the wait," she remarked, winking at him.

Reaching behind her, Jack pulled her onto his chest. "Was it now, Mrs. Thornton?" He asked, tucking her hair behind her ears.

"Jack, that had to have been the best ever," she said, her cheeks growing warm.

"Wow, really?" Jack eyes widened, curiosity filling them.

"Mind blowing," she replied, nodding her head.

"Hmmm. I'll have to remember everything we just did."

"I don't think so."

"Why?"

"Because we've only been together one other time before now since the twins were born, and I'm not duplicating that."

Jack tipped his head back into his pillow and laughed, tightening his arms around her.

"No, Baby, I don't want to do that either."

"She's still not smiling, Jack." Elizabeth said, her voice cracking from concern.

Standing next to his wife, Jack brushed his knuckle along Peyton's cheek. The only response was the movement of her mouth as if trying to find something to eat.

"Do you want me to call Dr. Redmon?"

"Can you, please?"

"Of course," he replied, pulling his phone from his pocket.

Jack stepped out of the room to make the call. Not knowing what the doctor would say, he didn't want to upset Elizabeth any more than she already was.

Returning to his wife, Jack stood next to her, looking down at their daughter that stared back with no expression.

"What did he say?" She asked, turning her head toward her husband.

"He wants us to bring them in tomorrow. They had an opening at 10."

Returning her gaze to her daughter, Elizabeth nodded, a single tear rolled down her cheek.

April 19th, 2011 - University Hospital

They waited in the stark white room, both babies in their carriers sitting on the paper covered table. Jack was talking to them, Colton was smiling and reaching for his dad. Peyton held a teething ring tightly in her little hand, staring up at Jack, expressionless.

Elizabeth watched, her heart in her throat, her biggest fear on the edge of becoming a reality.

The door opened and the Dr. Redmon stepped inside, "Good morning, Jack. Hello, Elizabeth."

"Hello, Dr. Redmon," Jack replied.

Elizabeth remained silent, fighting a battle within herself, trying to keep the tears and fear at bay.

Looking down at the babies, the doctor commented, "Well, they sure have grown."

"Yes, that they have," Jack said.

"Hello there, Mr. Colton," Dr. Redmon said, moving the baby's foot back and forth, receiving a smile in return.

Moving to Peyton, he repeated it, getting a blank stare from the little girl.

"How's she doing with everything else? Does she grab things with both hands? Put them in her mouth? Lift her head during tummy time?"

Stepping forward and answering this time, Elizabeth said, "Yes, she does all of that. Everything else has been right along with her brother. But Colton has been smiling for over three weeks now and babbles all the time." Elizabeth wrapped her arms around herself, watching the doctor.

He held her toy in front of her and watched as Peyton reached out to grab it. After doing different tests on both babies, involving toys, sounds, and lights, Dr. Redmon sat down and motioned for Jack and Elizabeth to do the same.

"I understand your concerns, especially after the difficult birthing experience and what we told you. It is still a bit early to know for sure about Peyton's development, but she does seem to be doing well. Better than I expected to tell you the truth."

Jack and Elizabeth both let out breaths that could be heard through the room.

"She's doing everything a three-month-old baby should be doing, except the expressions and babbling. Should she be doing both of those by now? Probably. But every child is different. The fact that she's reached every other milestone leads me to believe that she will continue to develop on her own time. I'm sorry to say, but right now, all we can do is wait."

The doctor waited for a brief moment before continuing. "Let's give her another month. There're other tests we can run but I don't want to unnecessarily put her through them yet. Plus, they are much more accurate the older the child is."

Both parents nodded.

"Do you have any other questions for me while you're here? Anything else you want me to check out?"

Jack turned to Elizabeth, who shook her head.

"No, Doctor. That's all for now. Thank you," Jack stated as he stood to shake the doctor's hand.

Elizabeth stood over Peyton, watching her mouth the toy she still held in her hands.

"You two can leave whenever you're ready. Do you know your way out?"

"Yes, thank you, Doctor," Jack replied, watching him leave, closing the door behind him.

Going to his wife's side, he laid his hands on her shoulders and looked over her to Peyton.

"She'll be fine, Baby."

"How do you know?" She asked softly.

"Faith."
