Lorelai Victoria Gilmore had always known that she was selfish. She usually cared more about her self than anyone else, except Rory. She was her daughter, and no one could even begin to describe the intense bond between a mother and a daughter. More importantly, Rory was her best friend. Not the kind of best friend that you develop in high school and forget about once you enter college, but a lifelong friend. Lorelai had never loved or cared about anyone as much as Rory, and she never thought that she would. Until she looked into his eyes.

This wasn't the usual quick glance used to tease, order coffee, flirt, or smile. This wasn't even the tear-filled look for when she needed a shoulder to cry on. No, this was a long, intense gaze full of determination, caring, and...was that love? Lorelai felt like he could see right through her. No one else had ever gotten close enough to actually see her, the real her. No one but him. And then he leaned forward.

Lorelai had no doubts in this moment. She felt so complete, as if a missing piece was fit into a puzzle. Her heart was pounding so loud and fast that she even thought he could hear it. And then the butterflies came.

All of the reasons that this could not work came rushing into her head like a bolt of lightning, causing her to take a step back. There were so many reasons. She could lose a friend, never be able to go into the diner again, be hated by the town and her daughter, or...hurt him. Yes, that was the main reason. She had hurt everyone else that she had ever dated, and Luke could not be added to that list. She loved him too much.

Did she just admit that to herself? She loved him? And then Lorelai got a blazing look in her eyes very similar to the one that Luke wore, except that this look was filled with tears of joy.

Lorelai didn't trust herself to make the right assumptions, so she had to ask him. Ask him if he was doing what she thought he was doing.

"What are you doing?"

"Would you just stand still?"

And then he completed the long journey to her, and met her lips in a tender kiss. Lorelai couldn't have felt happier, or more complete. She knew that he would always be there for her. Forever.

To hell with selfish.
