June 26th, 2014 – Hope Meadows Ranch
Jack walked through the barn, Wyatt at his side, when he stopped at Buck's stall to check on the aging horse. The buckskin was standing along the back wall, his head hanging low, his eyes dull.
"Hey, buddy. Are you okay?" Jack asked as he opened the door and stepped inside.
The horse lifted his head and looked at Jack. He slipped the halter onto the horse and led him into the aisle. Seeing that he wasn't moving right, Jack began touching his hands along the horse, feeling and testing the animal's response to pressure along his back. Each time Jack neared the horse's rump, Buck would flinch and move his body away from Jack's hand.
"What did you do, Buck? Do I need to call the chiropractor?" He looked over the horse a bit more, checking his neck and shoulders, and decided to make a call.
…..
Jack was standing in the barn doorway when Wyatt ran out into the driveway, barking at the grey Dodge truck that pulled up. Dr. Marc Paulson stepped out and greeted Jack.
"Hey, Jack. Good to see you again."
"Hi, Doc. Thanks for coming out so quickly."
"No problem at all. Who are we working on today?"
"Ole Buck," Jack replied as he led the man into the barn where the horse was tied in the aisle.
Elizabeth was standing next to Buck, running her hands across his eyes like she'd seen Jack do so many times.
"This is my wife, Elizabeth. Beth, this is Marc. He's been my horses' chiropractor for many years."
"Hello, Elizabeth, good to meet you," Marc said, his hand out to shake hers.
"Nice to meet you, too."
"Beth is very interested to see how you do this," Jack said, grinning.
"I get that a lot," he commented, clapping his hands together. "So, let's get started." He walked along Buck, running his hand along the horse's back. When he pressed on Buck's left hip, the horse flinched and lowered his rump. "Sorry, buddy," Marc said to the horse. "We'll get you fixed right up."
Jack held Buck's lead while Elizabeth stood back and watched in amazement, as Marc adjusted the horse from head to tail. The man lifted each of Buck's legs, pulling them and making a quick jerk, setting the horse's shoulders and hips. He stood behind the old buckskin, pulling on his tail, and held the pressure for a couple of minutes. Then he pulled up a large padded block and set it alongside the horse. Standing on it, he began working on Buck's back, feeling each area, then pressing down hard and swiftly in the trouble spots.
"Wow, it's just like adjusting a person," Elizabeth stated.
"Yes, not much difference other than the size of the patient," Marc grinned.
Each time the doctor made an adjustment, Buck would relax and the relief was visible in his eyes. At one point, he let out a big sigh and dropped his head. When Marc was finished, the horse turned his head toward the man as if saying, "thank you." Jack led Buck down the aisle and back, the ease in the horse's movements clearly showing that it had been a job well done. When Jack stopped near the doctor, Buck nudged Marc, showing that it was also a job much needed and appreciated.
"Well, there you have it, Doc. A five-star rating from your patient," Jack laughed, watching the horse nuzzle the man once more.
"Always the reaction I hope for," Marc stated, petting Buck's neck.
"Thanks, Doc," Jack said, holding out his hand. "Buck's a new man."
Marc shook his hand and nodded, "My pleasure. It's very satisfying to see immediate relief, that's why I love my job. Very nice to meet you, ma'am," he said to Elizabeth, tipping his hat in her direction.
"You, too, Marc. And thanks for helping Buck."
Jack walked Marc to his truck while Elizabeth stayed back with the horse, running her hand through his long black mane. When Jack returned, he rested his hands on the horse on either side of Elizabeth, trapping her between himself and Buck. She turned around and as she did, Jack's lips were waiting for hers, catching her off guard.
"What was that for?" she asked, wrapping her arms around him.
"Just because," he replied, moving his hands to her waist. He pressed his body on hers, gently pushing her against the side of the horse.
Buck turned his head, looking at his humans, and nuzzled Jack's arm. Jack reached over and pushed the horse's head away as he continued kissing his wife.
"How long until Ma brings the kids back?" Jack asked, pushing Elizabeth's hair off her shoulders.
"Not for a while," she grinned, reaching up to the buttons on his shirt.
"Oh, really?" he smirked back. "Buck, time for lunch," Jack said as he pulled the tail of the lead rope, untying the knot and led the horse to his stall. When he returned to his wife, who was still standing in the aisle of the barn, he swept her up into his arms and started toward the large open doors.
"Where are we going?" she asked, tightening her arms around his neck.
"As much as I enjoy making love to you in this barn, I enjoy the comfort of our bed just a bit more," he winked as he exited the building.
"What if I enjoy the barn?" she asked, giving him a seductive look.
Jack stopped and looked down at his wife, gave her a crooked grin, turned, and carried her back in. Not stopping until they were in the tack room, Jack lowered Elizabeth's feet to the floor, while keeping an arm around her waist. Raising his free hand, he placed his palm on the wall and pushed her against the cedar planks. Raising his other hand, he curved his fingers around her neck, his thumb resting on the side of her face, stroking her soft skin.
Elizabeth slowly unbuttoned his shirt and unbuckled his belt. She pressed her palms against his chest and eased her hands along his refined abdomen, slipping one hand down the front of his pants.
Jack's lips were exploring her neck when he felt her hand grip him. He quickly straightened and looked down into her eyes, wild desire flashing in his. The look was mirrored in her baby blues and Jack grabbed the hem of her shirt, swiftly pulling it over her head. Once her clothes were removed and Jack's pants were pushed over his hips, he lifted her up with her back against the boards, one hand around her waist, the other returned to the wall for support. With her legs wrapped around him and her ankles firmly locked, Jack moved with ease, rocking his hips, sending a wave of pleasure through them both.
Jack's cheek was against Elizabeth's, their breaths heavy in each other's ears, their skin beginning to perspire from the heat building inside them. Every muscle in his body was tense as he moved slowly. Not wanting it to end, yet feeling himself getting close, he stopped, wrapped both arms around her waist, and carried her to the couch, never losing contact. He turned and sat, keeping her on him. Gripping her hips, he moved her up and down along his shaft, as the two kept perfect rhythm with one another.
Jack leaned back into the cushion and gazed at his wife, her staring back at him, while she gradually moved, each motion slow and deliberate. Jack gently touched his fingers to her back, caressing the curve of her spine, their eyes never unlocking. When his fingers reached the dimple just above her buttocks, he moved his hands to her hips once more, his fingers digging into her flesh, speeding her movements.
Elizabeth controlled herself this time, watching her husband nearing the edge, then slowing to draw it out. Until he could no longer stand it and grabbed her hips, moving her on him, bringing them both to the brink. But instead of delaying it any longer, they reached the crest and went over, feeling as if they were suspended in time, holding each other's sweaty bodies, letting the wave wash through them as they caught their breath.
Jack leaned over, laying across the couch, his legs hanging over the padded arm, pulling Elizabeth down and alongside him. A blanket was draped behind Jack and he pulled it over, covering Elizabeth's naked body. Jack's jeans were still on, pushed down now just below his butt, and he pulled them up, leaving them unzipped. Elizabeth reached up and pulled Jack's arm around her, holding it close to her just below her breasts.
Jack's mouth was next to her ear and he gently kissed it. "I love you, Elizabeth."
He rarely said her full name, and when he did in this fashion, it sent a wave of chills through her body. Turning her head, she kissed him, long and passionately.
"I love you, too, Cowboy."
…..
Jack was tucking his shirt in when he walked out of the barn, Elizabeth just behind him, fastening the button of her jeans.
"That was close," Jack said as they stepped into the light of the sun.
"What?" she asked, moving up beside him. Just at the edge of the pasture was Lee, riding Cisco along the fence line toward the barn. "Well, I'd say so," she said, then began to giggle. "His timing is usually so impeccable. He must be losing his touch."
The couple was laughing when Lee reached them. "What did I miss?" he asked, jumping down from his horse.
"Nothing you needed to see," Jack answered, slipping his hand into Elizabeth's.
Lee looked back and forth between his friends. Seeing their grins, flushed cheeks, and tousled hair, he replied, "I don't even want to know." He started toward the barn, Cisco's rein in his hand, shaking his head.
Elizabeth turned to face Jack, a huge grin covering her face. "I'm sure glad he didn't show up ten minutes sooner." She stretched up and kissed her husband.
"Me, too," Jack said, smoothing the back of her hair down. "We should be done by supper," he added, kissing her once more."
"Okay." Elizabeth turned to head to the house and felt Jack smack her butt as she began walking away. She let out a small gasp as she looked back over her shoulder, catching Jack eyeing her up and down. "Get to work, Cowboy," she stated, pointing at him.
"I believe I've already done my job," he winked and shoved his hands into his pockets.
"Jack," she exclaimed, chuckling and shaking her head. Still walking toward the house, she stopped and turned to face him. "And a job well done...might I add." Laughing, she curtsied, then turned back to the house and jogged toward the structure.
…..
Jack and Lee were sitting on their horses, looking over the herd of mares and foals.
"What does this make now?" Lee asked.
"Fifty-three mares, thirty-seven foals."
"Wow, that makes my little herd of twenty seem like child's play."
"You gotta start somewhere, Brother. I started with twelve."
"Nowhere to go but up, right?"
"That's right."
"What do you think about that one?" Lee asked, pointing out a loud colored black and white stud colt.
"He's from Elizabeth's mare. She's had top notch foals each year."
"He's going to be amazing."
"He sure is. He'll bring quite a few dollars, just like last year's."
"I'm really liking the looks of that little sorrel filly." Lee pointed toward a two-month-old foal from one of Jack's original mares.
"She's a good one. Her mother is out of HotWheels InMotion."
"That dun overo stallion?"
"Yep."
"I didn't know you had one of his foals. I've been searching for a mare with his bloodlines."
"Well, there you go," Jack replied, motioning to the filly. "Now you've got one."
Lee's head snapped to Jack. "What?"
"She's yours. Thanks for all your help around here."
"I can't just take her. How much do you want?"
Jack turned his head to his friend. "I already told you, Lee. She's yours. Consider her a bonus for all the extra help you've done here on the ranch."
"Jack, I ca..."
Jack raised his hand and cut him off, "It's done, Brother. I'll deliver her as soon as she's weaned off her mother."
"I don't know what to say."
"How about...thank you," Jack winked and teased.
"Thank you, Jacko. Thank you," Lee moved Cisco over until he was almost touching Harley, then laid his hand on Jack's shoulder. "I love you, Brother."
"Love you, too, man," Jack replied, laying his hand on Lee's shoulder, too. "Now, pick out a couple more."
"Why?"
"Because I owe you for everything you do for me. And I want to help you get that herd of yours a little larger."
Lee knew there was no point in arguing with Jack, so the two men moved their horses through the herd, checking out the options of fillies. Lee settled on a little black and white one, as well as a solid buckskin.

"Jack Ashton Thornton!"
Jack was in his office above the garage with the windows open, filling out registration papers for the new foals, when he heard Elizabeth shout his name. He stood and moved to the window closest to the face of the house. "What's wrong?" he called out.
"Can you please come down here?"
Jack backed away from the window with thoughts running wild through his mind of what he might have done, unable to come up with anything worthy of his middle name. Elizabeth was on the front porch, her arms crossed, when Jack walked out of the garage and up the steps.
"What did you promise these kids?" she asked, her voice heated, her eyes narrowed.
Jack moved to the top step, keeping his distance, still trying to remember what he could have possibly done to make his wife this angry. "I don't know what you're talking about, Beth. What's going on?"
"Blake is telling me that you promised that they could all go ride bulls tomorrow."
"What?" Jack replied, "I never said th...oh."
"Oh? Oh, what? You just remembered that you told them?"
Jack had never seen Elizabeth this angry, other than one other time, and quickly wanted to set things straight. "Blake misunderstood me. I said they could practice riding bulls."
"Okay? And this is different, how?"
"Not a real bull, Beth. Do you think I'm that stupid?" Jack voice went a bit louder than he'd wanted and he immediately regretted saying that to his wife. "I'm sorry, Baby."
"Jack, I don't think you're stupid." Elizabeth dropped her arms, along with her guard, and her voice had returned to normal. "Please, explain to me what you meant."
Jack took a few steps toward her and laid his hands on her arms. "A friend of mine has a mechanical bull and I thought Blake would enjoy riding on one. We can control the speed so there are no worries of him getting hurt."
"Oh," she said, embarrassed at her reaction. "I'm sorry I yelled," she added as she moved into his arms.
"No need to apologize," he said, kissing her forehead. "I will promise you, that I would never put any of our kids on a dangerous animal until they were ready. And I would talk to you first."
Elizabeth looked up into Jack's face. "You have plans of putting our kids on dangerous animals?"
"They are riding ponies, aren't they?"
Elizabeth rolled her eyes and grinned. "Yes."
"And, Beth...you know how much Blake wants to ride bulls. If he keeps up like this, you do know that he'll get on one whether I let him or not. Wouldn't you rather I train him right?"
Elizabeth dropped her head against Jack's chest and nodded. "I don't want to think about that right now."
Jack placed his thumb and forefinger under her chin and lifted her face to look at him. "I will teach him everything, I will train him, I will help him stay safe. And if he changes his mind and decides he doesn't want to bull ride, then I will help him find something else he loves." Jack leaned down and kissed her softly.
"I'm sorry. I know you would never do anything to hurt them. I wasn't thinking."
"Well, you did hurt my feelings a little, maybe you'll have to make up for it later," Jack grinned his crooked smile.
Elizabeth moved her arms around his neck, smiling back. "Oh, really? And what do you have in mind?"
Jack looked up, as if he was trying to think of an answer, then looked back at Elizabeth from the corner of his eyes. "I'll let you decide. Use your imagination...because you are obviously good at that."
Elizabeth smacked his arm and gasped. "I wasn't thinking...that's different than using my imagination," she teased, grinning.
"Oh," he laughed. "I see. Well, then don't think when you show me tonight how sorry you really are."
"Jack Ashton Thornton, what am I going to do with you?" she stated as she began walking back into the house.
"That's what I've been talking about," he shouted, his arms out wide.

May 13th, 1992 – Missouri Valley Youth Rodeo
Twelve-year-old Jack lowered himself onto the large black bull. His heart was racing and his palms were soaked with sweat.
"You've got this, Son," Thomas said, leaning over the gate and holding onto his son's shirt, ready to yank him from the chute if the bull were to act up. "Just remember everything I've taught you."
"Alright, Dad," Jack responded, nervously as he shoved his gloved hand into the handle of the rigging.
"You can't let your nerves rule your ride, Jack," Thomas said quietly, only for his son to hear. "Your nerves will win every time."
Jack looked up at his dad, the older man's eyes so full of wisdom, pride and love. "Okay, Dad." Jack could feel himself calm, and his hand stopped shaking. He finished strapping in, shoved his hips forward until he was sitting into his hand, and nodded his head.

June 29th, 2014 – Painted Valley Ranch
Jack turned the truck down the driveway that led to Jimmy Kliersen's barn. He had been a longtime friend of Jack and Lee's and had competed alongside them for years. As soon as Jack had heard that Jimmy had purchased a mechanical bull, he was on the phone with his friend.
"Are we riding a bull today?" Blake asked. His excitement was spreading to everyone in the truck.
"It's not a real bull. Remember, buddy?" Jack asked.
"Oh, yeah. I forgot," Blake replied, sinking back into the seat. As the drive led them along a pasture, Blake stretched up and his entire face lit up, "Look at those."
Jack and Elizabeth looked to the right to see what Blake had spotted, and a large grey Brahma bull was laying out in the sun, his eyes closed.
"He's awesome," Blake exclaimed, not taking his eyes off the large beast.
Jack put the truck in park in front of the barn and saw Jimmy coming out of the house to meet them.
"Jack," Jimmy said loudly, his hand out and a large smile on his face. "It has been way too long."
"Jimmy, so good to see you." Jack took the man's hand, then pulled him in for a hug.
Elizabeth rounded the front of the truck, Blake and Colton beside her, as Jack opened the back door on the driver's side and helped Peyton out. "Jimmy, this is my wife, Elizabeth. My sons, Blake and Colton, and my daughter, Peyton."
"Very nice to meet you, ma'am, kids," Jimmy said, tipping his hat to the little family.
"You have a bull!" Blake shouted, unable to contain himself any longer.
"I sure do. His name is Clyde."
"Clyde," Blake repeated, laughing. "That's a funny name. Do you ride him?"
"Nah, he's retired. He used to be a bucking bull, but he just lays around and sunbathes now."
All three kids began laughing and Blake put his arms across his brother's and sister's shoulders, who were standing on either side of him.
"So, who's the little man that wanted to ride the mechanical bull?" Jimmy asked.
"Me, me, me," Blake shouted, jumping up and down, his hand in the air.
"Well, let's not keep this little man waiting any longer." Jimmy led them into the barn and across to a room built on the end.
"This is great, Jimmy," Jack stated as they entered.
The room was equipped with a pool table, bar, beer cooler, as well as the mechanical bull.
"Wow," Colton said as he crossed the room to the bull that was surrounded by a padded base and rails. "I ride, too?"
Jack walked up behind his son, picked him up, and tossed him into the air. "Of course, you can," he said as he moved Colton onto his shoulders.
Jack lowered Colton to the floor and stepped up on the padding. "Come here, Blake," he said, holding out his hand to help his older son up. Jimmy was preparing the machine as Jack prepared Blake. Jack removed a glove from his back pocket, "Put this on."
Blake took the glove and looked from it to his daddy and back. "Is this yours?"
Jack grinned, "Yes, that was my riding glove from when I was a kid."
Blake quickly shoved his hand into the slightly oversized glove.
"We'll get you one of your own soon." Jack lifted Blake onto the bull. "Slide your hand in here," he instructed the boy. He helped his son grip the handle, folding his fingers across the top, then wrapped the rope around his hand and across Blake's palm. "This is how you tie yourself in. Make sure it's tight."
"Okay, Daddy."
Once Blake's hand was secure, Jack pushed his son forward. "Slide into your hand. A little further. Yes, just like that," Jack stated once Blake had moved forward enough. Taking his son's free arm, he held it up into the air. "Now, keep your arm up, you can't touch the bull anywhere or you're disqualified. Are you ready?"
"Yes, Daddy." Blake's entire body was shaking from excitement and nerves.
Jack placed one hand on Blake's chest and the other on his back. "Don't let your nerves rule your ride, because your nerves will win every time."
Blake looked at his father, his hazel eyes mirroring Jack's. "Okay, Dad."
Jack felt as if Blake had aged several years right before him. Reminding himself that he wasn't even five yet, he patted Blake on the back. "You've got this." He stepped off the platform and stood beside Elizabeth and the twins.
"Nod to Jimmy when you're ready," Jack grinned.
Blake nodded and Jimmy started the machine. The bull began slowly, moving only back and forth at first. Jack called out pointers as Blake rode the bull, moving his body back and forth like a real bull rider would. Jack turned to Jimmy and gave him a nod. Jimmy moved a dial on the control panel and the bull began to turn as it bucked.
Blake was smiling ear to ear, hollering as he rode, keeping his arm up just like his daddy had told him to.
"Good job, Blakey," Jack called out as the bull sped up just slightly.
"He's a cowboy," Colton said, clapping for his brother.
Peyton joined in on the celebration.
Jack looked to Jimmy, nodding once more. Seeing this, Elizabeth grabbed Jack's arm. "Isn't that fast enough?"
"He'll be just fine, Beth. Look at him."
Elizabeth watched Blake, but then her gaze moved to her husband. Pride and excitement filled his face. She recognized that look, it was the same look Jack would have after a successful ride. She knew he missed the thrill of the ride, but also knew that he wouldn't change his decision for anything. Now, he was living vicariously through his son. Jack would never put a child in harm's way, especially one of his own. She would need to trust him, and know that he would give each of his children every opportunity he could, for them to live their dream, whatever it may be.
The bull was moving at a good pace now, and Blake was still holding on. But the next step up, sent Blake off and onto the padded base.
The little boy jumped up and shouted, both arms into the air, "I did it!"
Jack was soon next to his son, picking him up into a hug. "You sure did."
"Am I ready for a real one?" Blake asked excitedly.
"Whoa, slow down," Jack said, stepping off of the platform. "We're a long way from a real one. But we'll keep working on it, okay?"
"Okay, Daddy."
Jack let Blake down and turned to Colton. "Are you ready?"
The twins each took turns, the bull barely moving and they held on with both hands, but both acted as if they were true rodeo stars. Jack, Elizabeth and Jimmy celebrated with them as they did their little dance once on the safety of the floor.
"Those are some great kids you have there, Jack," Jimmy commented as they made their way back to the truck.
"Thanks, Jimmy. We think so, too."
"Blake looks like he'll be the fourth generation of Thorntons on the championship podium," he said, placing his hand on Jack's shoulder.
Hearing this, Elizabeth turned to face the men, listening to their conversation.
"He's looking that way," Jack added. "He is most definitely rodeo crazy." Jack caught Elizabeth listening to them and moved next to her, taking her hand in his and squeezing it. "He'll have an army of trainers around him, that's for sure." It was Jack's attempt to ease Elizabeth's nerves once more.
"Oh, I know that. Between you, Lee and all your friends, no one will stand a chance against your son."
"Hey, thanks for letting us come over today. The kids had a blast."
"Anytime, Jack. Seriously, just give me a call and we'll get the next generation started early."
Jack squeezed Elizabeth's hand again, letting her know he's thinking of her.
Once in the truck and back on the highway, Jack looked to his wife who had remained quiet since they'd left. "What's on your mind?"
Elizabeth turned her head to look at Jack. "You know."
He reached across the seat and took her hand, caressing the top of his with his thumb. "You know I won't let him ride until he's ready, right?"
"Yes, I know. It doesn't make me any less worried. It's my job." She flashed him a small grin and squeezed his hand. "I'll be fine. I was just hoping I'd have a few more years before this all began."
"Oh, Baby. It's only going to be sheep and mini bulls for a long time."
"Mini bulls?"
"Ummm...yeah. They have mini bulls for the kids to compete on. The pee wee class doesn't even buck. They just walk around. They are pets." Jack could see her tense slightly. "I won't let him do anything until you're ready."
Elizabeth looked at him again, having expected him to say, "until he's ready," she was surprised at his comment. "Thank you," she stated, weaving her fingers into his.
"He's your son, too. I will not move forward with anything without your approval."
Elizabeth unbuckled her seat belt and slid over next to Jack. Once she was buckled back in, she moved her arm through his and rested her head on his shoulder. They rode like that the rest of the way home, just enjoying the closeness of each other and the conversations and laughter of their children.

"Are you ready for your first Bible study?" Elizabeth asked as she placed the stack of plates into the cupboard.
"I think so," Jack answered, pulling the bar stool out and sitting down with his notebook in front of him. "I really wish Frank was doing this though."
"You'll be great. And the guys will connect with you better."
"I suppose. At least Tom and Lee are both helping me."
"You guys will do amazing and just remember how much you'll be helping those men grow their faith."
"Yes, I know. I keep reminding myself of that." Jack opened his notebook and began rereading his plan for that evening.
"I've seen you go over your notes at least five times," Elizabeth said, laying the towel next to the sink and walking to Jack's side. "You've got this."
Jack turned on the stool and wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her in between his legs. "Thank you for all the faith you hold in me," he said, looking up into her eyes.
Elizabeth cupped Jack's face with her hands and kissed him. "You will do great. You know this material. The men will listen to you. That's truth."
Jack tightened his arms and pressed his cheek to her chest. "I love you so much. I couldn't do any of this without you."
Elizabeth ran her hands through his thick hair, gripping the back and tipping his head so she could see his face. "You can do anything you put your mind to. All on your own." She covered his lips with hers, her tongue dancing with his.
"Mommy, Daddy, can we go play outside?"
Jack and Elizabeth both quickly turned their heads to find Blake standing next to them. "Yes, Blake, that's fine. Stay on the playset though," Elizabeth replied.
After all three kids ran out the back door, Jack and Elizabeth looked at one another, their eyes wide in shock.
"Did you hear that?" she asked, wondering if her ears had deceived her.
"I sure did," he answered, smiling.
"I don't think he even realized what he just said." Elizabeth moved to the window over the sink and watched the kids running across the grass toward the playground.
Jack followed and stood behind her, his arms around her waist again. "I don't think he did either. It just came naturally for him." Jack kissed her cheek, then rested his face against hers, both watching their children through the glass. "I'll go supervise them," he said as he began walking toward the back door.
"Supervise? Or join in?"
"Is there a difference?" Jack was grinning at her as he looked back over his shoulder before turning the corner toward the door.

July 4th, 2014 – Table Rock Lake, Branson Missouri
Jack backed Tom's truck toward the lake, easing the boat trailer into the water. Tom was sitting inside his boat, waiting for it to be far enough submerged to start the motor. With it fired up, he put it in reverse and slowly floated off the trailer as Jack pulled it out of the water.
Eight children and seven adults lined the dock as Tom brought the pontoon back around. Jack grabbed the rope and held the boat in place as Lee picked up and handed each of the small children to the adults that had already boarded the boat.
Once everyone was safely on the pontoon, Jack tossed the rope onto the deck, then jumped over himself. Wearing only his black and grey camo board shorts from their honeymoon, his tanned skin made it look as if he lived in the sun. If it wasn't for his pale legs, an outsider might think that he spent his days on the beach.
Elizabeth was in her red bikini with a wrap tied around her waist. She was sitting on the bench that lined the back of the boat, Peyton on one side, Colton on the other. Blake and Austin were near the front with Frank and Charlotte, looking over the edge in an attempt to spot a fish.
Jack picked up Peyton and sat down next to Elizabeth, setting his daughter on his lap. He moved his arm behind Elizabeth, and with his fingers gripping her shoulder, he pulled her toward him so he could whisper in her ear.
"I want to take this suit off of you, just like I did in the swimming pool on our honeymoon."
Thinking back to that moment, Elizabeth's cheeks grew warm as she remembered their time in St. Martin. It was the day he'd walked out of the bathroom wearing the speedo and she'd tackled him into the pool. Soon after, they were making love in the water.
Jack noticed her far-off look and grin on her lips, and knew she was thinking of that moment as he was. "Remembering the best pool sex we've ever had?" he whispered into her ear.
Elizabeth looked into her husband's eyes and wanted nothing but to rip his clothes off and act out the image in her mind. "Yes, I am."
"Hey, you two. Get up here and join us," Rosemary called out as she shifted Autumn to her other knee.
Jack stood, holding Peyton on his hip, and held his hand out to Elizabeth. She moved Colton to his feet and took her son's hand, placing her free hand into Jack's.
With everyone together, the kids playing in the center, Tom at the wheel, the boat moved out onto the lake. The heat from the July sun was quenched just slightly by the breeze that graced everyone's skin. Peyton climbed onto the seat next to Jack, her face toward the wind, her eyes closed. She began to laugh as the breeze blew her hair around, pieces whipping into her face. Jack grabbed her and pulled her onto his lap. Her life vest was bulky, making it uncomfortable for her, and she pushed herself off his legs and onto the floor, joining the others.
Savannah was at the front, her arms resting on the edge, looking over and watching the water as the boat cut through.
Jack draped his arm across Elizabeth's shoulders and rubbed his fingers along the soft skin at the top of her arm. Rosemary's hand was resting on her belly. With just a little over two months to go, she was begging to get quite large and quickly.
"Do you know what you're having?" Sam asked, watching the woman caressing her stomach.
"No, we're waiting like with Autumn. The surprise in the delivery room was the best," she smiled. In reality, she was pretty sure they were having another daughter, and wanted to keep Lee's hope for a son alive just a little longer.
"Will you have more?" Sam asked.
Lee was shaking his head "no" in a vigorous motion. Jack and Tom began laughing and Rosie turned to see what was so funny.
"Lee," she exclaimed, slapping his arm. Then returning her attention to Sam, she answered, "No, I think three is enough for us. Obviously, so does Lee."
"However many you end up with, they are all little blessings and you will love them all the same." Wise words from Charlotte filled all their ears, each one thinking of their own family and situations.
Jack looked at Elizabeth to find her smiling, but could see in her eyes that the reality of not having more of her own still saddened her. Jack squeezed her shoulder, causing Elizabeth to look at him. He mouthed the words, "I love you," making her smile grow.
Tom sped up the boat just a bit, as they skimmed across the wakes of passing cruisers. The kids laughed with each rise and fall, trying to keep their balance as they walked around, giggling each time they'd bump into each other.
After being on the water for forty-five minutes, Tom steered the boat into a cove and Jack moved to the back to drop the anchor.
"Who wants to go down the slide?" Tom called out.
Several exclamations, shouts, and claps came from all the kids. Savannah and Luke were the first up the ladder. Seconds later, a splash could be heard, soon followed by another. Tom went up next, and helped the kids to the top as Jack held them as they climbed the ladder. Once Jack and Lee joined them at the top, Austin and Blake took their turns down the slides.
Jack sat down and pulled Colton onto his lap, "Plug your nose, Colt," he shouted as they slid down the plastic, splashing into the cool water.
They were joined by Lee with Noel, and Tom with Peyton.
"Again!" Peyton yelled, wiping the water from her face.
Jack swam to the boat, holding onto Peyton's life jacket, dragging her behind him. Then lifted her onto the platform on the back where Elizabeth was waiting to pull her up. Colt was next, then Noel, then Jack pushed Austin and Blake up.
Elizabeth assisted each of them up and back into the boat. Then she watched her husband as he pressed his palms onto the platform and pushed up. The muscles in his arms flexed as lifted his body from the water. It dripped from his flesh, soaking the carpet covered decking. When he stood and pushed his hair back from his face, he caught Elizabeth still staring at him.
"Enjoying the show?" he teased.
"Yes, very much," she replied, her gaze not moving.
Jack leaned forward, placing his hands on the back of the seat that Elizabeth was resting on, facing backwards and on her knees. He kissed her, then held his face directly in front of hers. "I'll give you a better show tonight," he whispered.
"I'll hold you to it," she grinned.
"Oh, you'll hold me? Where will you hold me?" he teased.
Elizabeth glanced around, and seeing that no one was watching them, she reached over the gripped the front of his shorts. "Right here," she said, then kissed him.
Jack cleared his throat then tugged at the front of his trunks. "Thanks, Mrs. Thornton. Now I must go back into the water."
Jack fell backwards, splashing into the lake, as Elizabeth covered her mouth to silence her laugh.
Austin plunged into the water after another trip down the slide, followed by Savannah and Luke. Blake held Colton in front of him and took another turn down and into the lake. Lee was holding Noel when Peyton sat down and pushed off. He reached out to grab her but it was too late.
"Jack!" he shouted as the little girl went down the slide.
Jack turned to see what was happening just as Peyton left the slide and hit the water. He swam hard, trying to get to her quickly, but the life vest kept her above the surface and she was laughing and splashing her hands on top of the water.
"Peyton Grace," Jack exclaimed, grabbing her and pulling her away from below the slide. "Don't you ever do that again."
"What I do, Daddy?" she asked, her bottom lip beginning to quiver.
"You can't go down that slide alone. You scared me half to death."
"Why not?"
"Because you're too little. You could get hurt." Jack lifted her up out of the water, her bottom on his bicep as he swam with his other arm toward the boat.
"But it was fun," she replied, a tear falling down her cheek.
Jack stopped and looked at his daughter. "I understand it was fun, Pey. But you're too little to go into the water alone."
"But I float," she stated, patting her life vest and grinning.
Jack stared at her, seeing the joy in her eyes, and began to rethink the situation. He looked out to see Colton and Blake, both swimming and playing with their life jackets on. Holding on to the back of the boat now, he lifted Peyton onto the platform, sitting her on the edge. Jack placed a hand on each side of her and faced his daughter.
"If I let you go down again...alone...you cannot go until I tell you to, and not without someone below to help you if you need it. Colt had Blake with him and Blake is a good swimmer."
Peyton smiled and nodded.
"Go ahead and go up top, and wait for me to tell you when it's okay."
"Otay, Daddy." The little girl got to her feet and walked to the ladder where Tom was now waiting. He helped her up and followed her to the top. "Ready, Daddy?" she called out, watching Jack swim back out to the bottom of the slide.
"Ready," he called back.
Peyton sat down and pushed off, screeching all the way down. She splashed into the water, it barely covering her face, then searched for her daddy.
"Did you see me?"
"I sure did," Jack said, keeping a few feet between him and his daughter. "Can you swim to me?"
Peyton began kicking her feet and moving her arms into the water, but went nowhere. Jack grabbed her vest, pulling her away from the slide, then let her float once more. He began showing her the proper way to swim with her arms and legs, and soon had her moving through the water toward him.
"Good job, Pey Pey." Jack picked her up and threw her into the air, letting her make a big splash as she came down.
"Again, again," she shouted.
Jack picked her up and tossed her once more. Seeing this, Colton and Blake were soon at Jack's side, waiting for him to throw them next. Blake had helped Colton along, so Jack gave his son a quick swimming lesson as he'd done with Peyton, then lifted him up and threw him into the air.
This went on until Jack could no longer tread water and lift them, his arms shaking with fatigue. Noel had joined in and it hadn't taken long for Jack to grow tired tossing four kids, over and over.
By the time the day came to an end, Peyton and Colton were both going down the slide alone, then swimming out of the way before the next person came down. Jack was never far away, but allowed the kids to do as much as they could on their own.
After everyone was in the boat, getting towel dried by the adults, Jack pulled himself out of the water and sat on the back platform, his feet still dangling in the lake. He rested his forearms on his thighs as he caught his breath.
"Are you okay?" Elizabeth asked, taking a seat next to him.
"Yeah, I will be."
"Are you sure," she asked, laying her hand on his arm.
"Just worn out. Those kids are relentless," he grinned. He began to rub his shoulder, pressing his thumb deep into the tissue near his scar.
"Is your shoulder bothering you again?"
"It's been getting a little worse lately. I thought it was just stiffness in the morning, but recently it's been in the afternoon and evenings as well."
"You should go see your doctor, Jack."
Jack looked at his wife and nodded. "I will. I'll give him a call next week."
"Promise?" she asked, moving her hand to his shoulder.
"Promise."
Elizabeth gently touched the area, thinking it looked a bit swollen. "I think Sam should look at this now."
Jack rotated his shoulder, testing the pain level, then nodded.
Elizabeth knew it must really be hurting for him to agree, and she waved Sam over to join them. Elizabeth stood and moved out of the way as Sam knelt beside him. She felt his shoulder while having him move it, concern filling her face.
"Jack, I think you have what's called, Frozen Shoulder. You've got scar tissue from your injury that is limiting your motion and this really needs to be taken care of."
"What do they do to repair that," Elizabeth asked. "Another surgery?"
"Not necessarily. They could do a procedure where they will put him under, then they force his shoulder through a range of motion that it should do, breaking up the scar tissue. It's extremely painful, and that's why the patient is put under general anesthesia. If that doesn't work though, then you might have to have another surgery."
Jack was looking down at the water, shaking his head. "I'll still be out of commission for a while, won't I?"
"Jack, if you don't do this, you can lose even more range of motion. And the pain could just get worse."
"Okay, I'll call him on Monday and make an appointment."
Sam left the couple alone and Elizabeth sat down next to Jack again.
"Just what I need, to be worthless and need taken care of again."
"Jack Thornton, don't be ridiculous."
"How am I supposed to work the ranch if I'm in a sling again?"
Elizabeth nodded as something became clear, "That's what you did last time, isn't it?"
Jack turned his head, looking at his wife. "What are you talking about?"
"You did too much too soon. You didn't listen to your doctor. And now you're paying for it. But you have me this time, so you don't have to worry about anything."
"Beth, if I listened to my doctor, I would have never gotten on another bull again."
"Hey, Jack, can you pull anchor, please?" Tom called out.
"I've got it," Elizabeth said, reaching for the rope.
"Beth, I'm not under doctor's orders yet, I will get it." Jack stood and grabbed the rope, pulling the anchor, allowing Tom to move the boat forward. When it was out and safely placed on the boat, Jack returned to his seat on the back of the boat. "I'm sorry. It's just really hurting right now."
"I'll get you some pain reliever," she said, standing and going to her bag. After retrieving the ibuprofen and checking on the kids, she returned to Jack with a bottle of water and the pills.
Jack took them, downed half the bottle of water, then held it between his hands, looking out over the lake as the boat moved along, leaving the V trail behind them.
"Lee will be able to take care of the ranch. You know that right?"
Jack moved his gaze to his wife. "I know. But you can't do everything for the kids by yourself. I need to help you."
"What kind of help will you be if your shoulder completely seizes?"
Knowing he had no more arguments; he nodded his head in agreement. "You're right...as always."
"Well, I'm glad you finally figured that out," she teased, pushing her shoulder in to his.
"Oh, you're a funny one," he pushed back.
They sat quietly for a few minutes, watching a skier wipe out behind them, attempting to jump their wake.
"You had to have been in pain all afternoon, Jack. Why did you keep throwing the kids?"
"Because, they don't know or understand my pain. Why should they have to pay for it?"
"Jack," she said, laying her head back onto his shoulder. "You're an amazing father."
After a few more moments along, the couple joined the others at the front of the boat, where Charlotte and Rosemary were preparing sandwiches for everyone. Tom was driving across the lake, getting near the area the boats would gather for that evening's firework show.
By the time the sun set, hundreds of boats floated on the smooth water. The wind had stopped, leaving the lake's surface like glass. Noel, Peyton and Colton had fallen asleep after eating, the swimming had worn them all out. Jack was leaning back in the padded seat, his daughter's head on his shoulder.
As it neared time for the fireworks, they woke the children so the first boom wouldn't frighten them. They waited patiently for the show to begin, their eyes still only half open. When the first tail of sparks soared through the sky, the kids bolted upright, watching with wide eyes as it exploded, leaving a large white shower of sparks falling to the ground. The next one was blue, followed by red.
The family enjoyed the show that lasted over twenty minutes. The young ones kept their hands over their ears, while Lee held earmuffs on Autumn as she slept. A variety of colors, shapes, and sounds filled the night sky. Exclamations of wonderment could be heard between bursts, from their boat as well as nearby spectators.
Jack and Elizabeth loved to watch the reactions of the children even more than the show. They sat, arm in arm, watching the kids point out their favorite colors and forms with each explosion. Charlotte was in front of Frank, leaning back against him, his arms around her, as they, too, watched the excited children. Elizabeth laid her head against her husband, soaking in one more perfect night with their family. She had dreamed of having children one day, but these moments surpassed anything her mind could have thought up.
…..
July 5th, 2014 – Hope Meadows Ranch
Charlotte and Frank had picked up the kids earlier that day, and Elizabeth was sitting in her studio with a blank canvas in front of her. The temperature had taken a drastic jump and it was in the mid-nineties that day. She was having a hard time concentrating, partially due to the heat, but mostly due to visions of memories that were filling her head.
She could feel Jack's arms around her. His swollen biceps against her flesh, his breath in her ear, his sweat mixing with hers. They were in the barn and he had her pressed against the tack room wall. She had been unable to get that day out of her mind, thinking of it often. She had known no other lover, but she was quite sure that the kind of love they shared was not the norm. He was inside her again, pressing his hips into her, hard and swift. His other hand was pressed into the small of her back, his fingers guiding her motions, moving in sync with his.
Elizabeth could almost feel the tension and heat building up inside her now as she thought back. She had a glass of ice water sitting next to her, and she reached inside, picking up a cube between her fingers. She held it against the glistening skin at the front of her neck, allowing the cold water to trickle down her chest.
She closed her eyes and the canvas in front of her was filled with color and paint strokes - It was her and Jack. He was sitting on the couch in the barn, she was straddling him. They were enveloped in each other's arms.
Jack stood in the doorway of the studio, watching Elizabeth staring at the easel. When she picked up the ice cube and held it against her skin, Jack's jaw dropped and he felt himself getting aroused. He thought of entering the building, then stopped himself, waiting to see what she was going to do next.
Elizabeth's eyes were still closed, seeing the painting in her mind. The figures began to move as the woman slowly rocked her hips back and forth. A moan slipped from Elizabeth's mouth as thoughts of Jack flashed through her mind.
"Beth."
She heard her name float in on a breeze, just a breath from Jack's mouth. Her eyes remained closed as she grazed her skin with the ice cube.
"Beth."
Elizabeth opened her eyes to find Jack standing in front of her. Dropping the ice cube, she stood up, knocking over the easel.
"What are you doing?" he asked, swallowing hard against the lump in his throat and licking his lips.
Elizabeth just stood, frozen, embarrassed, staring into her husband's hungry eyes, her heart pounding.
He moved forward, cupping her face in his hands. "Were you thinking of this?" he asked as he covered her lips with his. Jack slid his hands deep into her hair, drawing her closer, their kisses going deeper. Jack pulled back and took a much-needed breath. "What were you thinking about?"
Elizabeth grinned and blushed, "The barn."
"Oh," Jack said, the pitch of his voice jumping up an octave. "That," Jack cleared his throat. "Yes, that was a great day." He stood still, looking down at his flushed and embarrassed wife, and began to laugh. "I'm sorry," he said, grazing his thumbs along her jaw.
"How long were you standing there?" she asked, brushing the remaining moisture left from the ice cube away.
"Ice cube," was all Jack answered, then reached into the cup to grab another. "Want me to cool you down?"
Elizabeth's eyes moved from the cube in Jack's fingers, to his eyes, then back. She sat down and opened her legs, inviting him in.
Jack, who was clearly ready to take his wife, took a step toward her, and touched the cube to her lip. He dragged it along the pink skin, his gaze locked on the droplets left behind. Then he bent down and sucked her lip between his, kissing her passionately, heat searing through him.
Straightening, he returned the ice cube to the skin at the front of her throat, and moved it down in a zig-zag motion. He watched the drops slide down her skin and soak into the lace at the top of her bra that was peeking out from the edge of her tank top. Jack popped the cube into his mouth and grabbed the top of her bra and shirt, pulling them down, and releasing her breasts. He knelt to the floor to one knee, moved the cube to his lips, holding it between his teeth, and ran it across the top of each breast, encircling each erect nipple.
Elizabeth's head was tipped back and she arched her back when the coldness neared her nipples. She thought for sure the heat that he generated inside her would melt the cube in seconds, but the coolness repeatedly circled her, sending wild desire flooding through her whole body.
Jack sat back onto his legs, chewed up what was left of the ice cube and swallowed it. He took Elizabeth's hands and pulled her to her feet. She looked down at him, watching him stare back at her, while he tucked his thumbs into the edge of her shorts and panties and pulled them down. She stepped out of them and Jack tossed them aside.
Jack took hold of her waist, pushing her back onto the stool, then spread her legs apart. He reached up, getting one more ice cube, and with his eyes still locked on hers, he put the cube between his lips and moved forward.
She flinched when the ice cube touched the inside of her thigh, then moved her butt forward, closer to the edge of the seat. She could feel the cold trailing along her leg, nearing her aching flesh. She could feel the freezing temperature of the ice cube, yet her thighs felt as if they were on fire.
Jack moved up her leg, alternating from one to the other, until he reached his destination. He pressed the cube against her, feeling her push toward him, wanting more. The cube was between his teeth as he bit down on it, moving it along the folds of her skin, loving the fact that she couldn't remain still and was gripping the back of his hair now. He took what was left of the ice cube in his mouth, chewed it up, then moved the pieces back to his lips. Using his tongue now, he spread the cold remnants across her skin, tasting her, wanting her.
His hands were on her butt now, pulling her toward him, going deeper with his tongue. Elizabeth was quickly brought to the peak, her fingers still locked in his hair. Jack reached down and unbuckled his belt and unzipped his jeans. As he stood, he pushed his pants just off his butt, grabbed Elizabeth's hips, and entered her fully and deep. He lifted her up and carried her to the table that they'd used before, and set her on it, remaining inside her.
Holding onto her thighs, he moved inside her as she leaned back onto her elbows, her head back, her throat dry as she called out in pleasure, climaxing once more. She sat up and wrapped her arms around his neck, holding him tight to her body as he released inside her. As his body trembled from uncontrollable pleasure, he called out her name, "Elizabeth," his mouth near her ear.
They held each other for several minutes, completely drenched in sweat. Elizabeth moved her head back and looked into her husband's eyes. "Well, now I won't be able to get this out of my head."
Jack chuckled and tightened both arms around her. "There's a lot I can't get out of my mind," he grinned. "But this will most definitely be one of them." With one hand, he removed a small lock of hair that was stuck to her cheek, and tucked it behind her ear. He kissed the tip of her nose, then stepped back and pulled his jeans up over his butt. "I think we need to go take a shower now and get ready for this evening."
Elizabeth nodded in agreement, then Jack lowered her to the floor. After retrieving her shorts and getting dressed, they straightened the studio and headed to the house to get ready for their evening out. Frank and Charlotte were babysitting all of their grandkids that night while the young couples went out for dinner and dancing.

July 9th, 2014 – University Hospital
Jack and Elizabeth were sitting in the exam room when the doctor entered. "Hello, Jack," he said as he approached the nervous cowboy. "Haven't seen you in a while. How's the shoulder?"
"It's been better, Doc. Oh, this is my wife, Elizabeth."
"Hello, ma'am." The man looked over Jack's chart, reading it thoroughly, then looked back at Jack. "It looks like you missed your last few appointments after your surgery. I assume you're here today because you overdid it and now you're paying for it?"
"I'm sure you're right, Doc," Jack replied, feeling like a scolded child.
"Well, let's take a look at see what's going on."
The doctor performed a battery of tests on Jack's shoulder: moving it, checking his range of motion, x-rays and an MRI. After returning to the room once the scans were read, he took a seat on his stool and looked at Jack.
"You do have quite a bit of scar tissue built up in there causing the frozen shoulder. There are a couple things we can try, but I recommend that we sedate you and manipulate your shoulder through its full range of motion. We will be forcing your shoulder to move as it should; this is very painful and that's why you'll be asleep during the procedure. This will break up that tissue and hopefully resolve the issue. You will be extremely sore for a bit after that and your arm will be in a sling for about a week. But then you must go to therapy to keep this from happening again, Jack. If you won't, there's no point in proceeding with this."
"I will, Doc. I'll do whatever is needed."
Elizabeth stayed back, listening, believing that Jack would do what he was ordered this time. She would make sure of it.
"Good, I'm glad to hear that." The doctor pulled his schedule up on the tablet and scrolled through his days. "I can get you in on Monday," he said, looking up at Jack.
"So soon?"
"I can do it later if you wish, but I thought maybe you'd like to get it over with and get rid of this pain."
"Monday is fine, Doctor," Elizabeth spoke up, stepping forward. "He'll be here."
Jack glanced to his wife and nodded, "Yes, sir. I'll be here."
The doctor chuckled, "Well, I'm pleased to see that you have someone that will make sure that you are going to do the work this time."
Jack smiled, dropping his gaze to the floor, "Yes, Sir. That's for certain."
"I'll let you get your shirt back on, then stop by the front desk for your procedure day instructions."
"Yes, Sir," Jack said, standing and picking up his black t-shirt.
"Very nice to meet you, Elizabeth."
"You, too, doctor."

July 11th, 2014 - Rodeo of the Ozarks, Parsons Stadium, Springdale, Arkansas
Jack pulled himself up onto Jake, the pain in his shoulder was evident on his face.
"Jack, why are you doing this?" Lee asked, turning Cisco around to face him.
"I told you...I'll be out of commission for a bit so we can't miss this one. I already messed up the last one, I have no intentions of leaving today without a time."
"Are you sure you can even do this?"
"I rope right-handed and it's my left shoulder that's messed up. I'll be fine."
"Good thing you were a left-handed bull rider, I supposed," Lee said in a half teasing tone.
"That it is, Brother. At least I'll still be able to do office work and get caught up on all of that."
"That's a plus, I supposed. You know, you can just relax and take it easy. I'll have everything taken care of."
"I know you will. But I will go absolutely stir crazy if I can't feel like I'm contributing, even in the smallest sense. It just might be time to finally begin my search for a stallion of my own."
"Seriously? That would be awesome!"
"I need to talk to Beth first. Having a stallion on the ranch will change things."
"That's for sure. Maybe you can find a docile one."
"That will be one quality I'll be looking for. But color, conformation, and it must be a cow horse."
"Any ideas for one yet?"
"No, I haven't really started looking yet."
The men moved their horses forward toward the arena.
"What about the one you've been using on your mares."
"They won't sell him...I asked."
"Well, I'm very anxious to see what you choose."
"Beth first...remember?" Jack grinned, stopping Jake behind the group of men that would ride before them.
"Yes, Beth. She'll say, yes...right? Who could say, no, to you?" Lee asked, flashing his million-dollar smile.
…..
Jack backed his horse into the box until Jake's rump was pushing against the pad. The horse's ears were forward, his eyes locked on the steer in the chute. Each time he'd turn his gaze off the animal, Jack pulled the horse's head back, trying to keep Jake's focus on the task.
The pain in Jack's shoulder dissolved from his mind as he stared forward, his eyes also locked on the little black and white steer. Everything hinged on that animal. If he ran out then suddenly stopped, it was over. They would have a no-time for the second rodeo in a row. If the little creature got ahead of them and turned, they wouldn't be able to recover in time to receive the fastest time. Their fate for that day was controlled by this beast, and Jack hated that aspect of the sport. He wanted to remain in control.
Even on the back of a two-thousand-pound bull, Jack had always felt in control of each ride, as crazy as that would sound to an outsider. But it was Jack's game. Team roping was a team sport. He had full trust in Lee, and never felt anything but pride to be competing with him. But too much fate was left to the steer, and this messed with Jack a bit each time they were about to ride.
Jake bobbed his head, showing his anxiousness to get going. His feet pranced below them and Jack held him back.
Lee nodded and the steer was released. The three animals tore out of their respective pens at full speed, and Jack kept his gaze locked on the animal in the middle. His rope was circling above his head when he saw the animal get yanked to the left by Lee, and Jack released the lariat. Seeing it soar under the animal's legs, he jerked his arm into the air, pulling the loop up and securing it around the steer's legs. He dallied the rope and Jake slid to a stop and backed up. The men eyed the animal suspended between them, then looked at each other, smiles covering their faces.
A time of 4:01 was called out over the speaker and the cheers of the crowd slowly faded into Jack's mind and ears. With a flip of his hand, the rope loosened and slipped off the legs of the steer, as Lee followed it out to get his lariat removed from the horns.
Once back at Jack's side, the two men celebrated in their way, bumping fist and smacking each other on the backs, as they rode out of the arena.
…..
Savannah sat on her horse, staring out over the arena. This was the largest venue she had ever competed in and it was a tad overwhelming. Her eyes scanned the stadium of over 8,000 spectators. Her heart raced, sending a nervous sensation to Cash. She patted his neck, her way of saying, "sorry, boy."
She watched the riders running their patterns - each one trying to shave seconds off by tightening their turns. As one girl after another crossed the sensors, Savannah looked at the clock to see their time.
Her world had been forever silent, yet filled with sights others never noticed. The other girls stayed back, listening to the times and places of each rider, never needing to watch the timer. Savannah, in her quiet universe, had to read everything. The riders, their horses, the timers. She didn't have the luxury of hearing the stirrup hit the barrel, threatening to knock it over, she had to see it. She couldn't talk to her horse with her mouth, they had to communicate through her legs. Her world was very different than the others, and she was still learning to navigate it.
She looked on as the next rider took her turn. She rounded the first barrel, then the next. As she approached the third, her horse took the cue wrong and began to enter the turn on the wrong side. A quick correction by the rider saved it, and the horse finished with a clear ride. But that tiny little mistake had cost her two-tenths of a second, and six places in the standings.
Savannah reached down and petted Cash's neck as the horse stared ahead of him, his ears forward, watching each team compete. The air was filling with dust from the hooves of the animals rounding each barrel, a sign of how much the horses dig in as they make those turns. She could smell the sweat that was emanating from the animals. Nerves, the heat from the July sun, and exertion had them dripping after their short run. Her heart was racing, excited for their turn. She knew the lineup, she'd memorized it. She knew that her turn was after rider 201, but her father was still nearby to let her know when to go. She had already become capable of navigating this part of the event alone, but she still wanted her dad nearby for his love and support.
Savannah sucked in a deep breath and closed her eyes, her world now quiet and dark, as she focused on the horse beneath her. Cash was beginning to tense up, sensing their time was near. The horse loved the race just as much as his rider. Savannah touched his neck, calming the horse slightly, her eyes still closed. She swung her legs back and forth, barely noticeable by a bystander, but Cash knew the signal well. It was Savannah's little motion she would do when she was bored and waiting, but it had become a ritual between the two to help Cash settle down until it was time for him to do his job. She could feel him relax, his muscles loosen, his shoulders drop, just the slightest. But that was all Savannah needed. She knew her horse was listening to her silent cues.
The two had become one in the short time they'd been together, no one had seen a team quite like them, not even Jack.
She felt a hand on her leg and looked down at her father. Tom was smiling at her, pride filling his face.
"Are you ready?" he asked with his hands.
Savannah nodded.
"You've got this," he said.
"I've got this," she replied.
She picked up the reins and guided Cash toward the starting gate, drawing in deep, slow breaths along the way, attempting to ease her own nerves so as not to make her horse more anxious.
Cash was unable to stand still as they waited in the dirt alley. Tom was standing along the fence, watching his daughter retain complete control of the thousand-pound animal. He nodded at her, giving her the signal to go.
Savannah's eyes moved back to the arena as she squeezed her feet into the horse's side, and the animal immediately dug into the dirt. Kicking it up behind him, Cash was stretched out and at full speed when they entered the large, open area, headed for the barrel on the left.
Savannah's leg was tucked back at each turn, assuring not the catch her boot on the barrel, causing it to fall over. Keeping complete control on the horse assured that Cash's shoulder would not do the same.
With all three barrels cleared, and all three remaining upright, it came down to this final stretch. Savannah loosened the reins, giving Cash the signal to let it go. The horse shifted into his newly found speed once more and the pair crossed the timer eye at 17:60. She had needed 17:66 to move into first in this larger arena. With every arena a different size, barrel times varied from weekend to weekend, and this was the biggest pattern the team had ever been on.
Pulling the horse to a stop at the end of the alley, Savannah quickly turned him to look at her father for the time. She shoved both arms into the air, and a muted shout came from her mouth. She leaned forward, vigorously patting Cash's neck.
As she exited, girls on their horses congratulated her, touching her leg or shoulder to make sure she was looking at them to read their lips. She was smiling ear to ear by the time she reached her father. She jumped off her horse and into Tom's arms.
….
The entire family was waiting at the trailers to celebrate with the winners of the day. Jack grabbed Elizabeth and picked her up off her feet, his excitement contagious by all. Lee wrapped his arm behind his pregnant wife, and planted a huge kiss on her lips, taking her breath away in the process. Savannah ran up to Sam and into her waiting arms, receiving a very tight hug from her mother.
Each person worked through the crowd, Charlotte making sure not to miss any of them. Plans were made to go out to eat that evening to celebrate, before returning to their trailers for the night. Finals were the next day, and Jack couldn't be more elated to be competing with Lee after what had happened last time.

"I need to talk to you about something," Jack said to Elizabeth as they crawled up into their bed, after getting the kids down for the night.
"Uh oh, this doesn't sound good," she stated, rolling onto her side to face him.
"It's nothing bad. Just something I've been thinking of and wanted to do, but to clear it with you."
"Clear it with me? Since when did you need to clear something with me?" she teased.
"Well, you know how I've been using someone else's stud on the mares?"
Elizabeth nodded, running her finger along Jack's arm.
"I'd like to get our own. I'd like to purchase a stallion to keep at the ranch so we won't have to pay for someone else's."
"Jack, you know the horse thing is yours. You don't need to ask me permission."
"But this is different. He would be kept in his own area, away from the mares and foals. He wouldn't be out near the house...ever. But stallions are unpredictable and that makes them dangerous."
"Oh," Elizabeth responded, not having thought of that aspect.
"Yes, that's why I need to talk to you about it first."
"Well...aren't all horses unpredictable?" she asked, honestly.
"Yes, I suppose they are. But stallions are worse. And when a mare is in season, a stallion will think of nothing else but getting to her."
"Oh, so...not much different than you?" Elizabeth teased.
"Oh, okay. I see how you are," he responded, grinning and moving his wiggling fingers to her waist.
"Don't...you...dare. We just got the kids to sleep."
Jack stopped and dropped his hand, a phony pout on his lips. "So...what do you think?"
"Well, I think that you consider your family before anything else in your life. So, you would take every precaution possible to keep us all safe. I think it's a great idea for you to have your own stud."
"Our own stud."
"Well, I've already got mine," she said, moving forward and kissing him.
"Oh, Beth," he said, wrapping his arms around her and pulling her body on top of his. "So...I'm your stud, huh?"
"Yes, you are mine. So, you get whatever you want for the mares." Elizabeth covered his lips with hers, moving her tongue deep into his mouth. "Mmmm...and what a stud you are."
"I feel so used," Jack teased, rolling her over and covering her body with his. "But use me all you want." He lowered his lips to hers, kissing her hard, his tongue tangling with hers.
"Mommy?" a small voice called out.
Jack quickly flipped off her, holding his hand over his crotch below the blanket.
"Come here, Peyton."
The little girl pulled herself onto the bed and bounced over to her mother.
"Why are you up?" Elizabeth asked, brushing her daughter's wild hair back from her face.
"I tan't sleep."
"Did you try?" Elizabeth asked.
"Yeah."
"Did you close your eyes?" Jack asked, leaning onto his elbows.
"Nooooo..."
"Then how can you sleep if your eyes are still open?" Elizabeth asked.
"I dunno."
"Go back down and try again please. Make sure you don't wake your brothers when you get back into the bed."
"Too, late!" Blake shouted from below.
Jack and Elizabeth both tried to stifle their laughter as Peyton carefully maneuvered down the steps.
"Good night, kids," Jack said, peeking around the corner of the wall, ensuring they were all in bed.
"Night night, Daddy," all three replied.
Jack returned to Elizabeth's side and pulled her against him. "Now, where were we? Oh, yea, I believe you were showing me how you use me." He nuzzled her neck.
"Jack," she said quietly, pushing him away. "They are still awake."
Jack rolled onto his back, his arms outstretched, and let out an exaggerated sigh. "I know," he said in a low, sullen voice.
Elizabeth snickered and rolled to her side, laying her arm across Jack's chest. "I'll use you later," she said, kissing his ear.
Jack turned his face toward hers. "Promise?" he asked, a boyish grin filling his face.
"Oh, yes. I most definitely promise," she replied, slipping her hand into his pants.
"Well, Mrs. Thornton, I do declare," he commented with his best southern accent.
