Thank you for all your lovely reviews. I truly love reading them all. Hope you enjoy some Christmas surprises in this one.

Elizabeth was lying on the bed when Peyton joined her. The little girl snuggled up against her mommy's side and laid her arm across Elizabeth. Feeling the baby moving, Elizabeth took her daughter's hand. She laid it on her tummy where the movement was most evident.
"What is that?" Peyton asked loudly, scooting away from her mommy, her eyes wide as saucers.
"That's your baby sister."
Not understanding, Peyton sat staring at her mommy's tummy.
"Do you want to feel her again?"
The little girl shook her head; her eyes were still huge.
"It's okay, Pey. The baby is just moving around. She's trying to get comfortable."
"Does it hurt you?"
"No, not at all."
The little girl scooted back to her mother's side and slowly placed her hand on her belly where it had just been. This time, as the baby moved, a smile gradually formed on Peyton's lips, and her eyes lit up.
"That's my sister?"
"It sure is," Elizabeth answered.
Peyton leaned forward and laid her ear against Elizabeth's belly. Her little face was pinched, and her bottom lip stuck out.
"What's wrong?" Elizabeth asked, brushing her fingers through her daughter's hair.
"I can't hear her."
"It takes a special machine that only a doctor has, and you can only hear her heart beating. She isn't making any other noise right now."
"She isn't?" The tone of Peyton's voice was filled with innocence and wonderment as she continued to try to hear her sister.
"No. She will as soon as she's born, though."
"I love her," Peyton said, followed by a kiss on Elizabeth's tummy.
"Oh, sweet girl," Elizabeth said, pulling her daughter into a hug.
The pair remained in each other's arms and were soon asleep for a mid-morning nap. Jack quickly moved through the house, searching for Peyton, when he finally decided to check the bedroom. Finding his little girl asleep with his wife, he quietly closed the door and returned to his sons, who were watching a rodeo on the television.

Charlotte, Sam, and Rosemary were busy around the kitchen preparing for Noel's fourth birthday party. As always, Charlotte had outdone herself with a marvelous two-tier unicorn cake for the ecstatic little girl, complete with a gold horn, ears, and a rainbow mane cascading down the back.
Elizabeth sat quietly at the table, watching her family as they worked, feeling as if she should be helping them.
"Are you sure there isn't something I can help with?" she asked.
"No, dear, just sit and relax," Charlotte replied. "There isn't much to do, and we're almost done."
Sam glanced up and caught the look on Elizabeth's face as her sister-in-law dropped her gaze. Looking around, Sam picked up a block of cheese, a small plate, and the cheese cutting board. She carried the items to the table and placed them in front of Elizabeth.
"Would you mind slicing this?" Sam asked with a sympathetic smile.
"Thank you, Sam," Elizabeth replied and laid her hand on Sam's arm.
"No problem."
Noel was on cloud nine with her unicorn-themed party. With her unicorn party hat on, she zipped around the house from child to child, adult to adult, not wanting to leave anyone out, hugging each of them. Her gifts had included many new toys and dresses and a new pair of pink and brown cowgirl boots. Noel immediately put them on and modeled them for all of her guests.
Elizabeth was sitting on the couch with Jack on the arm next to her. His hand was on her shoulder, his thumb brushing back and forth, as he watched Noel dancing around in her new boots, joined by Peyton. Elizabeth looked up at her husband and saw the love in his eyes for his family. He was smiling, his dimples prominent, as he watched his children playing.
Feeling his wife's gaze on him, Jack looked down and smiled at her with the one reserved for only his wife. He lifted his hand to her cheek, grazed his thumb across her chin, then bent down and kissed her forehead. Returning their attention to the children, Noel was now spinning around with her new stuffed unicorn.
Savannah helped Noel open the rest of her gifts, assisting with the multitude of twist-ties that held each toy captive inside the boxes. Sixteen-month-old Autumn was sitting on her daddy's lap, squealing at the brightly colored toys being unveiled, reaching down and trying to grab each one. Lee picked up one small plastic unicorn and handed it to his youngest daughter, settling her as she began to play.
Charlotte was comfortable in her seat, Frank's arm behind her, three-month-old Stetson asleep on her lap. Her heart was overflowing with joy with her expanding family. Austin, Luke, Colton, and Blake were all busy with their toys in the corner, showing no interest in the unicorn invasion occurring with the rest of the family.
The Thorntons gathered outside after saying their goodbyes to Lee, Rosemary, and the kids. Due to the falling snow and the chill in the air, they quickly made their plans for the next day and were on their way.
After forty minutes of trying to bring them down from their sugar highs, Jack finally got his children settled into their beds. Once confident they were on the verge of sleep, Jack went to the bedroom to get ready for bed himself.
Elizabeth was already changed and under the covers. The light was on, a fire was burning in the fireplace, and she had a book open and lying on her lap. She was staring at the words but not seeing any of them. As Jack eased into the bed, she was pulled out of her trance and looked at her husband.
"What's going on, Beth?" Jack asked as he moved closer to her.
"Nothing."
"Elizabeth, how long will it be before you realize how well I know you?"
"I don't know," she responded, returning her eyes to her book.
With his index finger under her chin, Jack turned her head to face him. "Beth, please. Talk to me."
"I can't stand all this sitting around. I know I have to, but I can't stand it. I want to help."
"I know exactly how you feel," Jack replied.
Realizing that he genuinely did, Elizabeth nodded her head. "Yes, I suppose you do."
"It's temporary. Just keep reminding yourself of that. I had to tell myself over and over some days to get through and keep myself from overdoing it. We're all here for you."
"I know you are. But it doesn't make it any easier."
Jack propped his pillows behind his back and moved his arm behind his wife. Elizabeth snuggled into his side, her head on his chest, as he combed his fingers through her hair. Jack continued this until he heard Elizabeth's telltale breathing change. He removed the book from her lap, laid it aside, slid down into the bed, and pulled his wife against his side. Jack took her hand in his free one and lifted it to his lips. He kissed her knuckles, then held her hand against his chest as he fell asleep.

December 25th
"Santa came!" Colton shouted as he ran across the living room to the tree. "Look, Blakey. Look, Pey. Santa came!"
"Oh, my goodness! Oh, my goodness!" Peyton called out, bouncing back and forth in front of the tree.
Jack and Elizabeth were curled up together on the couch, enjoying the innocent wonder in their children's eyes. Wyatt was lying on the floor at their feet and lifted his head when the kids entered the room. Seeing everything was alright, he lowered his head but kept his eyes on his people.
Blake stood a few feet away, eyeing all the gifts that seemed to have spilled out from under the tree, never having seen so many in one place.
"Everything alright?" Jack asked his son.
Blake turned his head toward his parents. His eyes were wide and filled with shock. "Are those all for us?" he asked, pointing at the gifts.
Grinning, Jack answered, "Most of them, yes, Blake. For you, Colt, Pey, Mommy, and there might be something under there for Wyatt."
Hearing his name, the dog lifted his head and looked at Jack.
"We didn't forget you, boy," Jack said as he leaned forward and scratched Wyatt behind the ear. "Blake, can you please hand me that box wrapped in blue."
Obeying, the little boy grabbed the box and carried it to his daddy. "Who's this for?"
"Wyatt. Can you help him open it?"
Blake tore the paper off and lifted the lid from the box. Wyatt was standing now and waited as Blake removed the large chew bone from the box and handed it to the dog. Wyatt gently took it, walked around behind the couch, and began chewing on it.
"Can you help the twins sort the boxes out, Blake?" Elizabeth asked. "Each one has a name on it."
"Okay, Mommy," Blake responded. "What about these?" he asked, standing in front of three huge boxes lined up along the wall.
"Those are for last," Jack stated.
The three children began moving the gifts into piles with the help of Blake reading the names.
"That says Mommy," Blake said as he picked up a large box and carried it to Elizabeth.
"Thank you, Blake."
"Does this say, Daddy?" Colton asked.
Blake hurried back and confirmed the name on the present. Colton carried the box to his daddy and placed it in his hands.
"Thank you, buddy," Jack said as he took the box and set it beside him.
"Those stay under the tree," Elizabeth said, motioning to the remaining presents for the rest of the family.
The kids sat on the floor, each surrounded by gifts, not knowing where to begin. Colton finally started by grabbing a large box and proceeded to rip the snowman-covered wrapping paper off in shreds. Mimicking her brother, Peyton pulled her largest box over and began to tear away the pink reindeer paper. Blake picked up the box closest to him and carefully tore the paper back, trying not to make a mess.
The kids continued in this matter, excitedly exclaiming after every present. New boots, clothes, winter coats, and more toys were inside their boxes, and all three children loved every item they revealed.
While the kids were busy with their new things, Jack reached behind the cushion and pulled out a small box. He turned on the couch to face Elizabeth and held it out to her.
"What's this?" she asked with a smile.
"Something special to tell you how much I appreciate you and all you do."
She removed the paper and lifted the lid to find a 14k white gold diamond drop pendant with four stones. "Jack, this is gorgeous," she said as she removed the necklace. Elizabeth had learned long before not to make a big deal about Jack spending a lot of money on her. So, she turned the diamond necklace over in her palm as she watched the light reflect off the many facets cut into each stone and adored the high-quality and thoughtful gift.
Jack took the necklace from her hand and reached around her, fastening the clasp. "One diamond for each of the children," he said softly.
"Jack," she said, laying her hand over the pendant. "It's so beautiful. But what if..."
"Nope," Jack said, interrupting her. "Our daughter will be fine. You will be fine. Like I said...one diamond for each of our children."
Elizabeth moved her arms around him, hugging him quite tightly. "I love it. Thank you."
"You're welcome. I love you with my whole being. I hope you know that." Jack spoke softly in her ear as they held one another.
"I know you do," she replied, pulling back and laying her hands on the sides of his face. "And I love you more than anything."
Jack moved closer to his wife until their lips met. Going unnoticed by the kids who were busy playing, Jack kissed Elizabeth, a kiss filled with passion and the deepest love.
"Did you like your shirts?" Elizabeth asked as Jack leaned back into the cushion and put his arm behind her.
"Yes, they are perfect," he replied, thumbing through the small box beside him. A few new plaid Wrangler shirts were neatly folded and stacked in the white box. "Maybe I'll wear this one today," he added as he pulled the black and white one out of the box.
"We should probably start getting ready," she said. Sighing, she moved to Jack's side and laid her hand on his thigh.
"We have some time," he said as he tipped his head against hers.
The couple remained still, watching their children move from toy to toy. Peyton picked up her new red dress and held it in front of her. She twirled in a circle, the dress flowing away from her body like a cape. The little girl reached down, picked up her new red boots, and ran to her mommy.
"Can I wear these today?"
"Of course, baby," Elizabeth answered. She took the dress and held it in front of her daughter. "Perfect fit," she grinned.
"Yea!" Peyton shouted, then returned to her pile of gifts to play with her brothers.
"Wait! What about those?" Blake asked, pointing to the three large boxes lining the wall.
"Oh, yea. We almost forgot about those," Jack stated as he leaned forward, resting his arms on his thighs. "Go ahead."
Elizabeth moved to the edge of the couch to watch the children rip into their final gifts.
"Whoa!" Colton shouted as he looked at the picture on the side of the box. It was a green John Deere tractor with a bucket on the front. "It's huge!"
"Mines pink!" Peyton screamed, looking at her pink tractor and pink wagon.
"Is this really what's inside the box?" Blake asked, pointing to an image of a pack of paper towels.
"The twins' are, but you'll have to open yours to see what's inside," Jack laughed.
Elizabeth laid her hand on Jack's thigh and squeezed, waiting for Blake's reaction when he opened his box.
Blake froze, and his eyes grew wider than they had ever seen as he looked down at his gift. A new riding glove, his own bull strap, new black rodeo chaps with black and turquoise fringe, vest, boots, and a turquoise shirt with Wrangler down the sleeves laid inside.
"Are these mine?"
"Yes," Jack answered, smiling ear to ear.
Blake lifted the chaps from the box and held them up. "They have a cross on them...like yours."
"That's right, buddy."
These are awesome!" he shouted, then ran across the room, jumping into his father's arms. "Thank you."
"You're very welcome," Jack replied as his eyes welled and stung.
Blake moved to Elizabeth, careful not to hit her stomach, and put his arms around her in a tight hug. "Thank you, Mommy."
"You're welcome, sweetheart."
Blake stepped back and held his chaps up once more, scanning every inch of the black leather.
"There's one more thing, Blake," Jack said as he reached under the pillow again. "This is from your mom," he said as he held out a small, wrapped present.
Blake slowly lowered his arms as his eyes locked on the gift in his daddy's hand.
"From Mommy?" he asked, confusion masking his face.
"Yes," Elizabeth replied. "We found a box in her bedroom a short while ago, and she left this inside for you."
Blake laid the chaps across the ottoman and reached for the present. His hands were shaking as he tried to tear away the red paper. Finally succeeding, he lifted the top of the package away, and his disbelief filled his eyes when he saw what was inside.
"This was her favorite thing," he said as he lifted the trophy buckle.
"Well, I'm pretty sure that you were her favorite thing, Blake," Elizabeth replied with a smile.
Blake looked at Elizabeth and nodded slightly. "I was never allowed to play with this. She said she didn't want it to get tar...tar..."
"Tarnished?" Elizabeth said, helping him with the difficult word.
"Yea, tarnished," the little boy said as he turned the buckle over in his hand.
"She really wanted you to have it," Jack added as he took the box from Blake's hand and set it aside. "We can get a glass case for you to display it in if you'd like."
Blake's eyes shot up to his father's, "Really?"
"Of course, buddy. You can keep it safe in your room on a shelf where you can look at it anytime you want."
"Yes, I would like that." Blake returned his eyes to the buckle as he held it very carefully in the palm of his hand. He acted as if he was afraid he'd break it, so Jack returned the small box to his son.
"Why don't you keep it safe in here for now until we get the display."
"Okay," Blake said and carefully placed the buckle onto the soft cotton padding lining the bottom of the small, white box. He looked it over one more time before returning the lid, then laid the box on top of his chaps. "This has been the best Christmas," he started, looking back and forth between Jack and Elizabeth. "But I wish Mommy could have been here to see it."
"So do we, honey," Elizabeth said as she reached out and brushed the little boy's cheek. "But she's watching over you right now."
Blake nodded and gave them a slight grin. "I know. She's with God."
"That's right," Jack said and lifted his son to his knee. "And we will all get to see her again."
"I know," Blake said with a smile. "And she doesn't hurt anymore."
"That's right. How did you get to be so smart," Jack asked as he wiped away the single tear that was slowly falling down his son's cheek.
Grinning, Blake answered, "From my mommy."
"Why, you little stinker," Jack said as he began tickling his son.
Blake screamed and leaned back, trying to escape his father's firm grasp, and began laughing. The twins were soon upon them, trying to help their brother get away by tickling their daddy. And before he knew it, all three kids were on top of Jack, pinning him against the couch and tickling him all over.
…..
With the kids washed and dressed in their new clothes, Jack entered the bedroom to check on Elizabeth. She had just finished her hair and was walking out of the bathroom when Jack walked in and stopped in his tracks.
"Elizabeth," he said, unable to continue.
"What? Is something wrong?" she asked, turning in a circle, trying to inspect her outfit.
Jack moved toward her, taking her arms in his hands. "You look perfect." He moved his arms around her, pulling her against him. "You are clearly going to make these next few months very...difficult." Jack kissed her neck and then straightened, looking down into her eyes. "You look amazing."
Elizabeth was wearing a red chenille off-shoulder fold-over sweater. She had it paired with skinny jeans and beige ankle boots, and the knitted material hugged her growing belly, showing it off.
"You look pretty fine yourself," she replied, gently running her hands down the length of his arms. "This shirt looks great on you," she remarked on the black and white plaid.
"Thank you. My wife picked it out for me," he said, flashing his crooked grin and dimples.
Giggling, Elizabeth replied, "Oh, did she now? I'll have to let her know she did a great job."
After kissing her neck again, Jack looked into Elizabeth's eyes. "I'll tell her you said so the next time I see her."
Giggling, Elizabeth pressed her forehead against Jack's chest and wrapped her arms around his waist. "I love that you can always make me laugh," she said softly.
With his index finger, Jack lifted her chin until their eyes locked. "And I will strive to do so forever." He bent down, covering her lips with his. Their bodies melted together as they always did as Jack's passion-filled kiss deepened.
"You're going to have to stop doing that," Elizabeth said as she stepped back to catch her breath. "You're the one that is going to make these next few months very difficult," she teased.
"I think it's safe to say...that it's just going to be hard to deal with."
Laughter filled the room as Elizabeth covered her face.
"What's so funny?" Jack asked.
"Your choice of words," she answered, wiping the tears from her eyes.
Thinking of what he'd just said, Jack rolled his eyes and pulled Elizabeth back against him. "Ma'am, you have a filthy mind," he said, then kissed her hard once more.
…..
Elizabeth and Peyton were standing near the door, waiting for Jack and the boys to come down. It was time to leave to go to Charlotte and Frank's for Christmas dinner. Peyton's hands were on either side of Elizabeth's stomach, and her cheek was pressed against her mommy's belly button. She was giggling when the boys came running down the steps, and Blake and Colton stopped to stare at their sister.
"What are you doing?" Blake asked.
"Feeling my sister," she said as she began laughing again.
"What?" Colton asked, his eyes growing wide.
"Come here, boys," Elizabeth said as she held out her hand.
Jack remained back and watched as his wife took one hand of each of the boys and placed them on her stomach where the activity was at that moment.
"What was that?!" Colton shouted.
"My sister!" Peyton answered loudly as she moved out of the way.
"That's your baby sister moving around in Mommy's tummy," Jack said as he knelt behind his children.
"Whoa," Blake said as he also placed his other hand on Elizabeth's belly. "She just kicked me...I think."
"I want to feel," Colton asked, moving his hand toward Blake's.
Blake took his little brother's hand and pressed it in the location his had just been. Covering Colton's hand with his, both boys could feel the next kick, and they fell into fits of laughter.
After allowing them to enjoy the miracle of the life growing inside his wife, Jack stood and looked at his watch. "We're going to be late," he said as he picked up Peyton's new coat.
After helping each of the children into their new coats, Jack reached for Elizabeth's and held it out for her. He bent down and kissed her neck, pulling it over her shoulders. "Merry Christmas," he whispered into her ear, sending chills down her spine and causing goosebumps on her arms.
"Jack," she said as she turned to face him. Seeing his eyes staring into her very soul, she smiled and stretched onto her toes, kissing his soft lips. "Merry Christmas to you, too."
With Blake's hand in her own, Elizabeth followed Jack and the twins out to the garage. Expecting to find his black truck inside, Jack froze when he flipped the light on and saw what was parked in its place.
"Who's here?" Colton asked after seeing a red truck where his daddy's black one usually sits.
"I have no idea," Jack answered, dumbfounded. Turning around to look at Elizabeth, he saw her smiling ear to ear. "What is this?"
"Merry Christmas, Cowboy," she answered.
Blake released her hand and pushed past Jack to peek into the garage. "Whoa," Daddy got a new truck!"
"What do you mean, Beth?"
"I mean just that. Merry Christmas," she answered, still grinning.
Jack turned back toward the truck and raked his hands into his hair. He stepped into the building and walked around the 2015 Ford F-250 crew cab. It was a deep red and was the exact truck he'd just looked at the month prior.
Elizabeth was in the garage now, watching her husband stare at the truck, shaking his head, utterly awestruck at this gift. "You didn't really think that all I got you was a few shirts, did you?" she asked, grinning.
Jack looked at his wife, and she saw a small tear fall down his cheek.
"What's wrong?" she asked, thinking she'd done something terrible or had purchased the wrong truck. "Is this not the one you saw when you were with Tom?"
"Yes, it's the exact truck," Jack answered.
"Then, what is it."
"I can't believe you did this."
Elizabeth was unsure of Jack's response. Unable to tell if he was upset or pleased, she stepped toward him. "Jack?"
Jack moved to her and wrapped his arms around his wife, holding her a little too tight.
"Jack," she said while trying to loosen his arms.
"Oh, sorry," he said as he backed up. "How did you do this?" Jack turned to face the vehicle again and opened the passenger door to look inside. The smell of new leather wafted out and encircled him.
"Do you like it?"
"Like it? I love it!" he answered as he sat on the seat.
"I want in," Peyton said with her arms in the air.
Jack reached down and lifted his daughter to his lap. Elizabeth opened the back door, and the boys climbed onto the seat, chattering over the excitement of something new to ride in.
"So, how did you do this? How did you know?"
"I was talking to Tom a month ago trying to figure out what to get you this year. He started talking about a truck you had seen and made him pull over so you could look at it."
"Yes, but I had decided that my black truck was still just fine."
"Jack, it had almost two hundred thousand miles on it."
"I know, but diesels will run forever."
"Do you not want it?" Elizabeth asked, her voice dropping in disappointment.
Jack slid Peyton to the middle of the front bench seat and stepped out of the truck. He put his arms around Elizabeth and kissed her softly. "Beth, this is the best, most unexpected thing you've ever given me...aside from our kids, of course," he winked. "Of course, I want it. I'm shocked and still trying to convince myself that this is actually sitting in our garage."
"Well, it is...and here," she said as she held the keys in the air. "Let's take her for a spin."
Smiling, Jack snatched the keys from Elizabeth's hand, helped her into the truck, and jogged to the other side. The booster seats were already installed in the back, and Peyton climbed back to get into her pink one. The boys, already in their spots, flanked either side of their sister and played with the window controls.
"Boys, leave those alone, please," Elizabeth said firmly.
"Yes, ma'am," both replied, pulling their hands away from the doors.
With the garage door open, Jack turned the key and listened as the new diesel fired up. He gripped the top of the steering wheel, and Elizabeth could hear the creaking sound the wrapped leather made as he turned his hands across it. Jack was smiling ear to ear as he put it in reverse, looked over his shoulder, and eased the truck out of the garage into the freshly fallen snow.
Jack scanned the dash and all its components as he slowly headed down the drive toward the highway. Before he turned toward his mother's, he set the radio station where he wanted, then looked at Elizabeth. With a smile as big as Blake's when the little boy had seen his new chaps, Jack reached across the seat and took his wife's hand.
"I think you need to sit beside me," he said as he tugged on her hand.
Elizabeth removed her seatbelt, slid to the middle of the seat, and secured the lap belt. Jack checked the traffic, then eased onto the road, flooring it once the truck was entirely on the pavement.
Elizabeth giggled at Jack's childlike enthusiasm, proud of having been able to keep this a secret.
"This thing's got some power," Jack stated as he let off the gas. "I thought my black one did, but this one...wow. Hey, where is the other truck."
"I traded it in on this one. I hope that was alright."
"Yes, no reason to have two. When did you do all of this?"
"Tom and I went to the dealership three weeks ago. I spoke to the salesman, got everything squared away, and wrote them a check to hold it. Tom picked it up yesterday, parked it at his place, snuck over this morning while you were in the shower, and swapped them out. Your black one is at his house, but we must take it to the dealership on Monday."
"You are just amazing, Beth."
"Shoot...we forgot the pies and gifts," Elizabeth said.
"We'll just have to go get them," Jack said as he pulled into a drive that led into a field. He backed out and started toward the house.
"Any excuse to drive just a little longer, huh?" Elizabeth teased.
"Absolutely," Jack said, then moved his arm behind her.
….
Jack carried two large pies as his wife and children entered his mother's house. He placed them on the island and helped the kids remove their coats, hats, and gloves. He watched them run off to find their cousins, then turned to Elizabeth, who was unbuttoning her jacket.
"Let me help you with that," Jack said as he reached for the remaining two buttons.
His eyes were locked with hers as a smile covered his face. His dimples were deep, and Elizabeth could swear that each time he smiled at her that way, her heart literally skipped a beat. Jack pushed her coat off her shoulders and added it to the pile on the entryway bench.
"Elizabeth, you look amazing," Sam said as she entered the kitchen. "That sweater is gorgeous." She hugged her sister-in-law, then laid her hand on the sides of her tummy. "How's little Miss doing?"
Smiling, Elizabeth answered, "She's doing great. She's very active."
"That's good. Not for your bladder, maybe," she teased, "but very good."
"How's my favorite Thornton sister-in-law?" Jack asked as he draped his arm across Sam's shoulders.
"Jack, I'm your only Thornton sister-in-law," she replied, punching him lightly in the gut.
Faking a deadly blow, Jack doubled over and let out a moan. "Geez, I call you my favorite and get beat up for it."
"Who's beating up who?" Tom asked, joining the group.
"Your wife punched me in the stomach for calling her my favorite."
"Well, darn. I missed it," Tom replied, wrapping his arm around Sam's waist. "She's got a great uppercut, too."
"Wow, I am really feeling the love here today," Jack said.
"We love ya, Brother," Tom said, smacking Jack on the back. "So, how's the new truck?" he asked with a grin.
"I don't know how you two pulled it off, but you got me. It's amazing, and I had no idea what she'd done. Thank you for helping her," Jack said as he laid his hand on Tom's shoulder.
"No problem at all. Glad to help pull a fast one on you."
"Why is Peyton's dress covered in glitter?" Charlotte asked, joining her kids in the kitchen. "I asked her, and she put her head down and walked away."
"You'll have to ask Jack about that one," Elizabeth answered, laughing and patting Jack on the arm.
With all eyes on him, Jack shared the story of his little mishap.
"I even know not to leave them with a bottle of glitter," Tom teased.
"I know, I know. Lesson learned," Jack replied.
"You'll be cleaning it up for a year," Sam said with a smirk.
"Yes, I am also well aware of that. It's sticking to everything in Pey's room every time she puts anything on the floor."
The group was laughing when Rosemary, Lee, and the kids arrived. Not having heard the story yet, Lee insisted that Jack share it one more time.
"Wow, Brother. Glad it was you and not me," Lee stated as he handed Stetson to Charlotte.
"Thanks, Bro," Jack quipped back. "Glad I could be of some use."
Lee wrapped his arm around Jack's neck, almost choking him. "You are good to have around for all kinds of things, Jacko. Like getting on the tough horses, so I don't have to."
In a lightning swift move, Jack had Lee in a headlock. "We'll see what happens next time we get a rank horse to break. He's all yours, Brother. All yours," Jack said as Lee unsuccessfully attempted to break free.
The women walked away, laughing, leaving the men to wrestle out their orneriness before lunch. Tom joined Frank in the living room while Jack finally let Lee go, only to get jumped by Lee in an attempt to prove his over-powering strength as well. Unable to hold his own against Jack, Lee was overtaken once more before calling "uncle."
"When are you going to learn?" Jack asked as he straightened his shirt, shaking his head at his best friend.
"Hmm...when I'm in my grave," Lee answered with a chuckle.
"Keep it up, and I'll put you in it early," Jack teased as he messed up Lee's hair again.
"Boys, can you please go help Frank with the kids?" Charlotte asked in a mildly scolding tone.
"Yes, Ma," Jack replied, giving Lee a shove as the pair headed to the living room.
"Hey, who's red truck is outside?" Lee asked.

December 30th, 2014 – Urology Department, University Hospital, Missouri
"I need to ask, Mr. and Mrs. Thornton, are you sure a vasectomy is what you want?" Dr. Nathan Ivey asked.
"Yes, Sir," Jack replied. He was holding Elizabeth's hand and felt her squeeze his.
"Alright then, let's get started. I will go over everything and explain the procedure and recovery time. Then we'll set up an appointment for the actual procedure. It's outpatient, and you'll have to have someone with you to drive you home. You'll need to rest for the first forty-eight hours, use ice packs, and pain meds as needed. In the first week, there will be no heavy lifting or anything that causes you pain. After that, as long as you're feeling well, you can begin to resume your normal daily activities. You'll return in ninety days when we will do a sperm analysis. If none are present, then you're good to go. If there are sperm present, then you will need to wait another month and come back to be tested again. Do you two have any questions so far?"
"No, Sir," Jack answered, then looked at his wife.
"No, Sir. Not yet," Elizabeth answered.
The doctor continued with explaining the no-scalpel procedure. He went into detail about what he would do, that no sutures would be needed, explained the recovery a bit more, and answered a few questions the couple had.
"Laura will help you on your way out and get a date for the procedure." Dr. Ivey stood and held his hand out. "Good to meet you both, and we'll see you in a week or two."
"Thank you, Doctor," Jack responded as he shook the man's hand.
…..
"Come on, kids. It's time for bed," Jack said as he walked up the steps to the second floor.
Three children ran as fast as they could behind their daddy, tripping each other, trying to be the first one to the top.
"Daddy, can you read us a story?" Peyton asked as she ran into her room.
"Sure, baby," Jack answered, following his daughter into her room. "Which one?"
Peyton stood in front of her bookshelf, scanning the selection, trying to make a decision.
"Can you tell us a story?" Blake asked from the doorway.
Jack turned to face his sons, who were both smiling and nodding their heads.
"Yes, Daddy. Tell us one!" Peyton shouted.
"Well, I guess I could come up with something," Jack replied.
"Yea!" all three kids shouted as they ran into Blake and Colton's room.
By the time Jack entered the room, the kids were lined up across the bottom bunk with their backs against the wall. A space was left between Colton and Peyton for Jack to slide into.
"Hmmm, let me think for a second," he said as he tried to think of a story that the children would enjoy. "I've got it," he said, grinning. "Are all of you ready? Do you have your animals?"
Peyton, Colton, and Blake each held up their favorite stuffed animal and shook them slightly. It had become a ritual for Jack to read to the children each night, and each time they would hold their animals, ready to act out a scene or two if their chosen toy was part of the story.
"Once upon a time, long, long ago, there was a poor man that lived off the land. One day, while he was working with a horse, a beautiful princess appeared in his barn, seeking help for a friend. Well, this poor man was immediately smitten by the princess, but he knew he could never be with her. Only a prince could marry a princess, so he had to keep his feelings to himself."
"Ooooo...this is a good one," Peyton exclaimed as she squeezed her stuffed puppy to her chest.
"Yes, Pey. This is a very good story. Now, where was I? Oh, yes...the princess."
Jack continued with the story. Each time the princess spoke, Jack used a high-pitched voice that would cause his children to giggle. His voice would drop low for the peasant man, making the story more enjoyable for the kids.
…..
Her name was Elisa, and she was the most beautiful thing the peasant man had ever seen. She asked the man if he could help her friend that had fallen off her horse, so he followed the princess through the woods to the road where her friend, Rosalene, was. He helped the injured woman onto her horse, then assisted the princess onto her large, black Friesian stallion.
"Thank you, kind sir," Princess Elisa said.
"You're welcome, Madam," the peasant man replied.
"What is your name, Sir?"
"My name is Jankin," the peasant replied as he bowed to the princess.
"Thank you, Jankin, for your assistance. I don't know what we would have done without you."
"Yes, ma'am," the peasant replied, bowing to the princess again.
Princess Elisa stared down at the man, unfamiliar with what her heart was feeling for him. Even in his worn, dirty clothes, she thought him handsome and couldn't take her eyes off the man.
"We should go, Princess," Rosalene stated, worried that the King would get angry with his daughter for being away from the castle too long.
"Yes. We should go," Elisa said, still staring at the man.
Jankin straightened and looked up at the princess. Their eyes locked, and both could swear that the ground had just moved beneath them. Jankin quickly dropped his gaze, knowing he was not allowed to make eye contact with royalty, but gradually returned his eyes to hers.
"Farewell, Jankin," Princess Elisa said softly. "I hope we cross paths again soon."
The princess turned her horse and kicked him into a run, closely followed by Rosalene. Jankin stood in the middle of the road and watched as the two women rode away. His heart ached as Elisa vanished into the horizon. He had never met anyone who had stolen his heart with a glance.
…..
"Is this about you and Mommy?" Blake asked, leaning forward so he could see around Colton.
"I don't know, buddy. You'll have to wait and hear the whole story and then decide for yourself."
With a big sigh, Blake leaned back against the wall. "Okay."
Elizabeth had been just outside the doorway, listening as Jack shared their story. She eased to the floor and leaned her back against the wall. With her ear next to the small opening, she listened to her husband.
…..
Weeks had passed since Jankin had seen the princess. He ventured closer to the castle each day, hoping to catch a glimpse of her, but he never did. One morning, as he was in his barn feeding the horses, he turned around to find her standing before him. His heart felt like it had just stopped beating as he swallowed hard to dislodge the lump in his throat.
"Hello, Princess," he was finally able to say.
"Hi, Jankin. Can I watch you while you work with the horses today?"
"Um, what? I mean, yes. Yes, Princess. You can."
With a racing heart, Jankin picked up a rope and fastened it to the halter of one of the mares. He led her outside to the pen he'd built and began to nervously train the horse. The princess stayed beside the wooden rails of the pen and watched the man with awe. She had seen many men train horses with a heavy hand but never had she seen the gentleness showcased for her now.
"How do you do that?" she finally asked.
Jankin stopped the horse and faced Elisa. "Do what?"
"Get the horse to do what you want without being rough with it?"
The peasant walked to the princess and rested his arm on the top rail, but his eyes remained on the horse. "You don't have to be mean to get a horse to do what you want. You just need to know how to talk to the horse in its language."
"You...talk to horses," the princess asked, stifling a laugh.
"Yes, ma'am. I do," Jankin answered with conviction as he turned to face her. "I read horses. I study them. Therefore, I can communicate with them."
Elisa was looking at Jankin now, feeling the love in her heart grow more profound for this man.
"I shouldn't be here," she stated as she began to turn away.
Jankin laid his hand on her arm, stopping her. Feeling the energy from his touch flow through her, she turned back to face him.
"I really should go," she said again.
"Stay."
The months passed by, and Jankin and Elisa spent every moment together that they could. They had fallen madly in love, but Jankin still felt as if he wasn't good enough. He was a poor horse trainer, and she was a princess, an heir to the crown.
One day as they passed through a meadow, a group of men stopped them in their path. Recognizing the princess, they thought they could take her and hold her for ransom. But Jankin wouldn't allow it. He drew his sword and fought the men. An epic battle of sword against sword, strength against strength, and love against greed ensued as the princess stood in the safety of Jankin. One against four, he defeated them, proving his worth for her love. The King caught wind of this and summoned Jankin to the castle.
Dressed in his best, which was unsuitable for a trip to the castle, Jankin rode in and was greeted by the guards who led him to the King. Jankin knelt before the man that sat proudly on the throne, and when he stood, he found the King standing before him.
The King dropped to his knees, and with tears in his eyes, he thanked Jankin for protecting his daughter. You see, the King had nearly sacrificed Himself for his kingdom, but men still took advantage of His love for His people. They were dishonorable and would steal, lie, and cheat. They were constantly trying to bring the kingdom down. But when the King saw the true heart of Jankin, he brought the peasant into his land and gave his daughter's hand in marriage to the man that was once poor.
Jankin wasn't poor any longer, but it wasn't about money. Jankin had chests full of gold and jewels hidden away, but his heart was not pure. He had been poor in life and love. Once he learned to honor the King, to love another, and had offered his own body as protection for Elisa, he was transformed into a new man.
Jankin, now heir to the crown as well, lived the rest of his life with Elisa in the castle overlooking the kingdom. They raised four beautiful children and brought them up to know and love the King. The couple shared the story of the King's love as often as possible, bringing many people to the kingdom's safety.
And they lived happily ever after.
…..
All three kids were staring at Jack, wide-eyed, and when he finished, Blake's expression changed to that of concentration.
"What is it, Blake?" Jack asked.
"Was the king God?"
"Yes, Blake. He was. How did you know that?"
"We learned God is King in Sunday School Class," Blake answered.
"That's wonderful, Blake," Jack responded and rubbed the little boy's hair.
"And the princess was Mommy, right?" Blake asked next.
"Yes, she was."
"So...that would mean that Jankin was you. And that means that you didn't always love God?"
Still hiding just outside the door, Elizabeth covered her mouth with her hands as she listened to her son, who was lightyears beyond his age.
Smiling, Jack answered. "No, Blake. I didn't always love God."
"But you do now?"
"Yes, very much."
"You didn't love God until you met Mommy?"
"It was around that same time, yes."
"You didn't love God?" Colton asked in disbelief.
"No. I am sorry to say that I didn't. I was having a tough time with my life and was angry at God. I blamed him for things that happened. But it wasn't God's fault. Only you can make yourself miserable...nobody else. Remember that, okay."
"Okay, Daddy," the children said.
"I know you guys are too young to understand all of this, but one day you will. I just want you to remember to always love God and ask Him for help when you need it."
"Okay, Daddy," they echoed again.
"Did you like the story?" Jack asked his children.
"Oh, yes. The sword fight was my favorite!" Colton shouted.
"I like it when the man and princess fell in love," Peyton added.
"What about you, Blake? What was your favorite part?"
"When Jankin was brought to the King, and the King thanked him."
"That was a good part, wasn't it?" Jack asked. "Well, that story was much longer than I planned, and it's past your bedtime."
Blake quickly climbed to his top bunk as a sleepy Peyton slid off the bed and onto the floor. As soon as Jack was off the bed, Peyton lifted her arms for her daddy to pick her up.
"Good night, boys," Jack said as he turned the lights off and walked out of the room with Peyton in his arms.
"Mommy!" the little girl exclaimed when she saw Elizabeth on the floor. "Why you on the floor?"
Grinning, Jack held his hand out for his wife. She took it, and Jack pulled her to her feet.
"Enjoy the story?" he asked as he put his arm behind her.
"Very much," she replied as they walked into Peyton's room together.
Jack lowered his daughter into her bed and kissed her forehead. Elizabeth kissed Peyton good night as well, and the couple quietly left the room as Peyton quickly drifted off to sleep.
Hand in hand, Jack and Elizabeth walked to their bedroom. Jack closed the door and began removing his clothes.
"I'm going to take a quick shower," he said, then disappeared into the bathroom.
Once Elizabeth was in her sleeping shirt, she quietly stepped into the bathroom. Jack's back was toward her, and the water was cascading over his head. Elizabeth sat down on the edge of the tub and watched her husband through the steam-covered glass.
Jack turned around and moved out of the water, wiping his face with his hands. He reached over and turned off the water, then stepped to the door and opened it. Seeing someone watching him, Jack jumped and grabbed his chest.
"Geez, Beth. You really need to stop doing that. You're going to give me a heart attack one of these days," he said as he took his towel and wrapped it around his waist. After a quick laugh, he said, "I thought you'd be in bed."
Elizabeth stood and closed the gap between them, wrapping her arms around his neck. Jack put his arms around her and held her tight, soaking the front of Elizabeth's shirt.
"I'm so glad you met the King," she said with her cheek against his chest.
Jack moved his hand up and ran it down the length of her hair. "So am I, Baby." He cupped her face with his hands and tilted her head back, taking her lips with his. "And I'm so glad that I met you."
Elizabeth grinned and slid her hands down his damp back, tucking her thumbs into the towel. "Me too."
"Let's go to bed," he said as he turned out of her arms and took her hand in his.
She followed him into the bedroom and around to her side of the mattress. Jack pulled the covers back, waited as Elizabeth got in, and then draped the blankets over her. As he walked around the bed, Elizabeth pulled her shirt over her head and dropped it to the floor.
"Beth, what are you doing? You know we can't do anything."
"I just want to feel your skin on mine," she replied as she rolled onto her right side.
Jack dropped his towel to the floor, then moved onto the bed and beneath the blankets. He slid across the cool sheets until his body touched Elizabeth's, and he encircled her with his arms. With her cheek against his chest and her arms tucked under his right one, Jack lifted his left hand and cradled her head, keeping her tight against him. He kissed the top of her head, then tightened his grip around her.
There was no denying Jack's love for Elizabeth, and when she was in the security of his embrace, she felt as if nothing could harm their world. She felt safe, loved, and needed. Elizabeth was quickly asleep as Jack held her. He lay with her against him, skin on skin, listening to her breathing, visualizing what their daughter might look like. He closed his eyes and could see Elizabeth holding her; a perfectly healthy baby girl.
Jack shifted his arms, causing Elizabeth to settle against him even more. Their bodies molded as one, fitting together flawlessly. With his eyes still closed, Jack drifted off to sleep with visions of his four children playing together.
