Okay, so, there wasn't going to be any steam alerts for a while, but...you'll see this was necessary! Ha! So, true to our J&E...full steam ahead.

January 20th, 2015 - Primrose OB/GYN

Dr. Shepherd set the probe on the table, picked up the ultrasound photo, and handed it to Elizabeth.

"Everything looks great. The baby is healthy and right on track at thirty weeks. I don't see any bleeding or anything to cause concern." Dr. Shepherd rested his arms on his thighs. "Now, the...not so fun part of today's visit. I want you down as much as possible. No housework, no cooking, no playing with the kids. You need to remain off your feet. You can get up to go to the restroom, then straight back to bed. You can shower, but short ones. That being said, lying in bed too much during your third trimester can cause other issues. So, you will need to get up briefly a few times a day and walk around. If you experience any pain or bleeding, no matter how minor, get to the hospital immediately. I'm allowing you to remain home during bed rest because I know you have a large support system and that your sister-in-law is a nurse." The doctor handed Elizabeth a pamphlet before continuing. "Here are a few exercises that you can do to encourage blood flow. Make sure you do these every day. Do either of you have any questions?"

"Our twins' birthday is next week. Will it be alright if I rest until then, then start the full bed rest after their party," Elizabeth answered.

The doctor let out a hard breath as he thought about it. "Full rest until you need to work on the party, but have lots of help. As soon as the party is over, back in bed."

"Thank you so much, Dr. Shepherd."

"We'll make sure she has plenty of help," Jack added.

"Okay," the doctor said, then stood. "I want to see you in a month, and don't hesitate to call or come in if you're having any issues."

"Thank you, Dr. Shepherd," Elizabeth said.

Jack stood and shook Dr. Shepherd's hand. "Thank you, Doctor."

"We're going to do everything in our power to make sure this pregnancy is a good experience for you both," Dr. Shepherd said in a calming tone. "Just relax, get caught up on some shows," the doctor grinned, "and do some reading. I know this family, so I'm sure you'll have plenty of visitors to keep you occupied."

"Yes, sir, she will," Jack replied as he took her hand.

"You two have a great rest of your day, and I'll see you in a month."

Dr. Shepherd closed the door behind him, and Elizabeth wiped the gel from her belly. Jack helped her off the table and pulled her shirt down. Elizabeth let out a long sigh as she slipped her arms into the sleeves of her coat that Jack held up.

"Our little girl will be here before you know it." Jack stood behind his wife, gripped her shoulders, and kissed her neck. "The time will go by quickly. You'll see."

"I hope so."

…..

With Elizabeth settled into bed and Wyatt at her side, Jack went to the kitchen to retrieve some snacks and water. While doing so, he made a few phone calls, informing everyone that she indeed had been put on bed rest and was already feeling out of sorts.

Before Jack had even gotten the tray of cheese and crackers prepared for Elizabeth, Charlotte had arrived with the children.

"Hey, Ma," Jack said as she walked into the kitchen. All three kids engulfed Jack in hugs as he knelt before them. "You're here early."

"I came to see Elizabeth. And I thought she could use some time with her children."

"Good idea, Ma." Jack placed the last cheese cubes on the tray and handed it to his mother. "Can you take this up to her?"

"Of course." Charlotte took the tray and headed upstairs while Jack entertained the kids for a few minutes. "Hello, dear," Charlotte stated as she entered the room."

"Hi, Mom," Elizabeth responded, a smile covering her face.

"Here, Jack prepared this for you."

Elizabeth took the tray and set it on the bed beside her. She picked up a piece of cheese and tossed it to the waiting Wyatt lying on her right foot. "What are you doing here?" she asked her mother-in-law, then picked up another piece of cheese for herself.

"I came to see you. And to bring your children back, of course."

"Please, pull up a chair or have a seat," Elizabeth said as she patted the bed.

Charlotte moved one of the chairs from in front of the fireplace next to the bed and took a seat. "How did your visit go today?"

With a huge smile, Elizabeth reached for the ultrasound photo lying on the nightstand and handed it to Charlotte.

"She's beautiful," Charlotte said as she stared at the photo. "She has your nose."

"I thought so, too. She's just perfect, isn't she?" Elizabeth proudly asked.

"Yes, she sure is," Charlotte laid the picture on the table and returned her attention to her daughter-in-law. "Now, what all did the doctor say?"

"He said everything looked great, and I am to remain in bed until the baby arrives. I can get up to walk around briefly, mainly for blood flow and muscle tone loss. I can take quick showers and use the restroom. But that's about it. Oh, I can get up to work on the twins' birthday party and for the party. But back to bed when it's over."

"Well, it sounds like we need to get a long list of things for you to do. Let me know what books you like, and I'll get them for you, a list of movies, games, anything we can do to help you pass the time."

"Thank you, Mom. I'll do that."

Charlotte visited with Elizabeth for a while before Jack brought the children up. After hugging everyone goodbye, Charlotte left to allow the family some time alone. The kids sat around Elizabeth, hugging and cuddling with her. Jack found a family movie on Netflix, and they lay in bed with Elizabeth to watch it, eating the tray full of food Jack had made.

When the movie ended, Jack took the children to the kitchen and fixed them supper. As he finished it, he sent Blake up to Elizabeth with her plate.

"Thank you, Blake," she said as she took the spaghetti-covered dish.

"Are you alright, Mommy?" Blake asked.

"Yes, sweety. The baby just makes Mommy very tired, so I have to rest and sleep to keep her safe."

"Okay," Blake said, then turned to leave. "Oh, Daddy wanted me to ask if you want bread."

"Yes, please. Thank you, Blakey."

Blake stared at Elizabeth and smiled. "My Mommy called me Blakey. I like that." The little boy turned and ran downstairs to tell his daddy about the bread.

A few minutes later, Jack appeared with a few breadsticks in a towel-lined basket and set them on the side table. "Hello, Beautiful." Jack sat on the edge of the bed, chuckled, and wiped sauce from Elizabeth's chin.

"Thank you, Cowboy."

"I need to get back to the kids, but we'll be up after supper."

"Okay. Thank you. This is delicious."

Jack stood and kissed her forehead, then turned to leave. Just before passing through the door, he turned around with a grin. "Chocolate cake for dessert?"

"How did you know?" she laughed.

Shaking his head, he started out the door. "I know you well, my darling."

…..

Elizabeth laid her phone on the bed just as Jack walked in for the night.

"Your parents?" he asked as he closed the door.

"Yes."

"How are they?"

"They're doing well. Dad had to spend the week at the office to get a mess straightened out, but besides that, he's enjoying retirement."

"That's good." Jack pushed his jeans off and tossed them into the dirty clothes after emptying his pockets into a tray on his dresser.

Elizabeth watched him, her eyes scanning his body, eyeing every movement and muscle as he finished undressing.

"I'm going...hey, what are you looking at?" he asked, grinning after catching her staring at him.

"Something I can't have, but I so wish I could."

"I know just what you mean," he replied as he walked toward the bathroom. "I'm going to take a quick shower."

"Okay." Elizabeth returned to her book as she waited for Jack to return. When he finally did, his body was covered with water droplets, and he was wearing a towel low on his hips. "Now, that is not fair," Elizabeth said after seeing him.

"What?" he asked as he dried his hair with a smaller towel, oblivious to what he was doing to his wife.

"You walking in here, looking like that, and I can't do a dang thing about it."

Jack tossed the small towel to the floor and crawled across the bed toward her, his other towel falling away as he did. "Well, maybe we can see what we can do about that."

"Jack, come on. You know we can't."

"Just lay back and relax," he said as he slid in next to her under the covers.

Elizabeth did as she was told and then felt his hand glide over her stomach. She closed her eyes and allowed herself to enjoy her husband's gentle touch.

Jack gripped the hem of her shirt and pulled it up. She felt his hand move across her skin, inching up toward her swollen breasts. He pushed under her bra and cupped one while rolling her nipple between his fingers. Jack moved closer to his wife and kissed her neck, sucking and nibbling across her soft skin. He pushed the covers back, lifted her shirt further, and then took her other breast in his mouth. He brushed his tongue across her nipple, feeling it harden as he continued with his hand on the other.

Elizabeth pushed her head into her pillow as she focused on the sensations ravishing her body. Jack pressed his pelvis into her hip, and she could feel him hard against her. She moved her hand down until her palm was against his erect manhood and closed her fingers around it. Jack's breath caught in his throat as his wife began to stroke him up and down, rendering him immobile for a moment.

Elizabeth rolled to her side, facing Jack, and moved her free hand into his hair. She pulled his head down until their lips met and kissed him hard and deep. Elizabeth continued stroking him, moving slowly at first, then speeding up. Her mouth migrated down his jaw to Jack's neck as she sucked his skin. Jack tipped his head back, and a long, low moan passed across his lips.

Her hand moved faster as Jack pressed against her. He continued to moan as her lips moved from his neck to his cheek, then back to his mouth. Jack quickly cupped her face, holding her so he could deepen his kiss, his tongue going wild against hers. Jack rocked his hips back and forth, moving with the motion of his wife's hand. The feeling of euphoria was building and building until Jack couldn't hold back anymore. He quickly reached for the towel beside him and threw it across his abdomen.

Elizabeth laid her head on her pillow, watching Jack as he rolled back to drop the towel to the floor. When he turned to face her, Jack kissed her and then laid his head on the pillow a few inches from hers.

"I was trying to take care of you," he said as he reached up and touched her face. "I can pick up where I left off."

"You can't do what I want you to do to me," she grinned.

"Oh? What would that be?" he teased.

"If I have to explain, then we've got issues." Elizabeth let out a slight giggle.

"Trust me, Baby. You don't need to explain that to me." Jack scooted closer to her and wrapped his arms around her. He kissed her cheek, ear, and neck, then pressed his lips to her shoulder. "I want to do so much more," he said barely above a whisper. Jack stopped, laid his head on the pillow, and stared into her eyes. "You really didn't need to do that."

"Yes, I did," she grinned.

"No, Beth. You can't, so I shouldn't either. Fair is fair."

"Well, as sweet as that is," Elizabeth said as she ran her hand down his arm, "you'll never pass your semen analysis in two months if we don't...do something to help you out." She was grinning now, waiting for Jack to realize what she was talking about.

"Did I miss something?"

"I think you must have. The doctor said you need to do...that...around twenty times before you're clear."

"Well, I'm okay with that," Jack grinned.

Laughing, Elizabeth replied, "Oh, really?"

"Only if you help me," he winked.

"I might be able to do that." Thinking back to the day of Jack's vasectomy, something else came to mind, and she began smiling. "There might be something else you've forgotten...or maybe not even aware of."

"What would that be?"

"The doctor fondling you." It took every bit of strength for Elizabeth to hold back her laughter as she watched Jack's face twist in confusion.

"What on earth are you talking about, Beth?"

"You told me that the doctor had just finished fondling you but that it wasn't as good as when I do."

"I said that?"

"Yep."

Jack rolled onto his back and stared at the ceiling, shaking his head. "I don't remember that at all. But it does sound like something I would say," he laughed. He turned his head to look at Elizabeth. "And no one fondles me like you do."

"Well, I would hope not."

Jack returned to his side and put his arms around her. "No one but you...and evidently my doctor."

Elizabeth laughed loudly as she tucked her head into Jack's chest. He tightened his arms around her and held her as she continued to laugh at her husband.

Jack peeked into the bedroom where Elizabeth was reading a book. "Sam is pulling in now. I need to run over and take care of Lee's horses and Tuff."

"Okay, Babe," she replied, looking up from her book.

Jack crossed the room and flopped onto the bed beside his wife. "Whatcha' reading?"

Elizabeth turned the book over, showing Jack the cover. A Thousand Tomorrows by Karen Kingsbury.

"What's it about?"

"A bull rider who fell in love with a barrel racer."

"Really?" Jack asked, taking the book and reading the back cover. "I thought you were joking. This sounds good. How far into it are you?"

"I just started it this morning. Why, do you want to read it when I'm done?"

"I thought maybe we could read it together," he said, handing the book to her.

"Together?"

"Sure, I'll read it to you."

"That would be nice."

Jack got up on all fours, leaned into Elizabeth, and kissed her. "I'll be back soon."

"Okay, Cowboy. I'll be waiting."

Jack jogged out of the room and down the stairs just as Sam came in. "The kids are in the boys' room, and Elizabeth is...well, you know where Elizabeth is," he grinned. "Thanks for coming over. I won't be long."

"Don't worry about us. I'll keep the kids and Beth busy."

…..

Jack was walking out of Lee's barn when Rosemary's truck pulled into the drive. Jack hurried to the passenger side to help Lee into the house.

"Hey, Brother. How ya feeling?"

"Jacko!" Lee shouted as he patted Jack's shoulder. "Hey, Rosie, it's Jacko."

"Yes, Lee. I see that" she replied with a chuckle.

Jack looked at Rosemary with a puzzled expression.

"They had to give him a little extra sedation than normal."

"Oh," Jack replied, grinning. "Were you scared of the doctor cutting you down there?" Jack asked as he eased Lee out of the truck.

"Shhhh, don't tell Rosie. But a doctor touched my junk today," Lee said loudly.

"Brother, I think she already knows."

"She does?"

"Yes, Baby, I know the doctor touched your special place," Rosemary said, laughing all the way into the house.

"How does she know?" Lee asked. His voice was a thunderous attempt at a whisper.

Jack held Lee's arm, steadying him as he crossed the yard toward the front door. "She was at the hospital with you, remember?"

"Oh, yeah." The men entered the house where Rosemary was standing in the kitchen with a few bags of frozen peas and Lee's pain meds. "Rosie! You're cooking peas tonight? I love peas."

Jack and Rosemary were both laughing now, unable to hold it in as Lee continued to talk loudly and stumble along. Jack helped him down onto the couch, then handed his friend the TV remote.

"What? I have a phone call?" Lee asked, pressing the remote to the side of his head. "Hello?"

"Lee, buddy, that's for the TV." Jack took the remote and pressed the power button.

"Ohhhh, look, a rodeo."

Lee's attention was occupied with the TV now, so Jack returned to the kitchen. "He's settled in and watching a rodeo."

"Thank you, Jack."

"Extra sedation, huh?" Jack asked with a laugh. He took a seat at the island and picked up a bag of peas, tossing it back and forth between his hands.

"I guess he started freaking out a bit, so the first pill wasn't...kicking in. So, they gave him a little more via IV."

"I'm going to have some fun with that," Jack teased. "I need to get back home to Beth. The horses are fed, and Tuff has been let out."

"Thank you, Jack. For everything." Rosie walked around the island and gave Jack a hug.

"I'll be back in the morning. If you need any help with the ole boy in there, just call me."

"I will. Thank you."

"See you later, Brother," Jack called out as he was leaving.

"Bye-bye, Jacko!"

…..

Sam and the kids were sprawled across the bed, coloring books laid open, and crayons were scattered around. Elizabeth was coloring a page with Peyton while Sam helped Colton with his. Blake was working on his favorite Monster Truck when Jack arrived home and ran upstairs to check on his family.

"What? A coloring party, and you didn't invite me?" Jack asked when he walked into the room.

"Daddy!" echoed through the room from all three kids.

"Come color," Peyton said as she held out her hand to him.

Jack pulled one of the chairs to the side of the bed, kissed Elizabeth's forehead, then took a seat. Peyton's coloring book was open to a large flower on one page and a princess on the other. The princess had been covered in a rainbow of colors. Each section was evident as to who had filled it in: Elizabeth or Peyton. Jack picked up a green crayon and began filling in the flower's stem.

"That's pretty, Daddy," Peyton stated as she watched him.

The little family continued to color for over half an hour until Sam had to leave to be home when her children got off the bus from school.

…..

Charlotte stopped by briefly to sit with Elizabeth while Jack did his own chores. He hurried through them as fast as he could in order to get supper started. Wyatt ran alongside Jack from stall to stall as his owner filled water buckets, dumped in grain, tossed hay into the feeders, and mucked each stall. Once finished in the barn, Wyatt jumped into the truck with Jack, and the pair drove out to check on the mares.

Jack parked the truck in the garage, and he and Wyatt quickly made their way into the house. Once inside, the aroma of chili struck him, and Jack found his mother standing in front of the stove.

"Ma, you really didn't have to do that. I was going to make supper."

Charlotte set the spoon down and crossed the room to her son. "Jack, you have been working yourself to death. Taking care of Lee's place, your own horses, Elizabeth, and the kids. This is absolutely the very least that I could do." Charlotte wrapped her arms around her son and held him for an extended hug. "I am so proud of the man, husband, and father that you have become." Charlotte moved back, holding Jack at arms' length. "Your father would be very proud."

Jack nodded, fighting back the tears that threatened to appear, and hugged his mom again. "Thanks, Ma."

"Now, the chili is all put together. Just let it simmer for a while until you guys are ready to eat."

"You're not staying?" Jack asked as he walked to the stove and picked up the spoon.

"No, I need to get home and fix supper for Frank. He's been out working in the barn all day, and I'm sure he's half-starved by now."

Jack looked into the pot and saw that there was enough to feed his family three times over. "Why don't you call Pops and have him come over here. You two have supper with us."

"I would love that," Charlotte said as she removed her phone from her pocket.

"I'm going to check on Beth really quick. I'll be right back."

"You just stay up there with her and the kids. I'll finish this," Charlotte stated as she listened to the phone ring.

Jack found the children in bed with Elizabeth, watching a movie, while their mother napped. Jack quickly put his finger to his lips to keep the kids quiet so as not to wake his wife. He carefully got onto the bed and pulled Colton onto his lap. The boy snuggled against his dad's chest and continued to watch the movie. Blake scooted over to be closer to Jack, and Jack moved his arm behind his son, pulling him against his side. Peyton was cradled in Elizabeth's arm and remained there while Fern Gully played on the television.

January 22nd, 2015 – Coulter Ranch

Jack decided to check on Lee before feeding the horses. He opened the door and peered inside. "Hello?" he said softly. No one replied, so Jack walked into the house and headed for the living room. He could hear faint voices as he neared the room. Rosemary was standing next to the couch where Lee was lying down.

"Oh, Rosie, it hurts so much," Lee whined as he held himself. "Why did I do this?"

"It was either you or me," she said, slightly annoyed.

"Hey, guys," Jack said as he stepped into the room.

"Hey, Brother," Lee said. His usual boisterous personality was gone.

"How's it going?" Jack's question was aimed more at Rosemary.

"It's been better," Lee answered.

Rosemary turned toward Jack with a look of desperation in her eyes. Jack motioned with his head for her to go, and he would handle things. Rosemary left to tend to other housework that she needed to get done.

Jack sat on the table in front of the couch and rested his arms on his thighs. "So, what's going on?"

Lee turned his head toward his friend. "This hurts like a son of a bitch," Lee stated firmly.

"Oh, it wasn't that bad," Jack replied, trying not to smile.

"Not that bad? My balls are swollen twice as big and feel like they'll explode."

"Have you been icing them?"

"I tried once, but that was so cold, I couldn't stand it."

"Lee, Brother, do what the doctor told you to do. I don't feel sorry for you one bit if you can't follow simple instructions." Jack stood, left the room, and returned with a bag of frozen peas. "Put this on. Trust me, it will feel great once you get used to the cold."

"Fine," Lee snapped as he took the bag. Lifting the front of his sweatpants, Lee shoved the bag in, grimacing.

"Take it easy, man. No wonder you're hurting."

Lee shifted the bag around until it fell into place, then laid back and waited. His eyes were pinched closed as he suffered through the pain. Jack sat quietly, waiting for a response from Lee.

After a few minutes, Lee opened one eye and looked at Jack. "Okay, so maybe you're right."

"Of course, I am," Jack said, slapping Lee on the arm. "Now that my work here is done, I'm going out to do the work I actually came here for." Jack stood and started to leave the room.

"Thanks, Jacko," Lee said, grinning for the first time since the sedation had worn off.

"Keep icing. Trust me, the peas are your friend." Jack laughed as he walked through the house, searching for Rosemary. "Hey," he said when he found her in the laundry room.

"Thanks, Jack. How's he doing?"

"Getting very acquainted with the bag of peas."

Rosemary giggled, then pressed start on the washer. "Thank you, Jack. I have been trying to get him to do that since yesterday."

"How are you?" Jack leaned against the doorframe with his arms crossed.

"I'm fine. Hopefully, Lee will be better now."

Rosie reached for the basket filled with clothes, but Jack stopped her. "I've got that," he said, picking it up. "Where do you want this?"

Rosemary led Jack to the bedroom, where he set the basket on the bed.

"Thank you, Jack."

"I'll go get the chores done, then I need to get home to Beth."

"Tell her hello for me, and I'll come to visit her as soon as I can."

"Will do. When is Sam bringing the kids back?"

"Your mom is actually...this afternoon. Sam got called in, so she had to run all of the kids over there. Your mother and Frank are absolute life savers."

"That they are. I'll see you tonight when I come back to chore."

Before going outside, Jack checked on Lee one last time. "You good now, buddy?"

Lee gave Jack a thumbs up. "Never better."

"You be good to that wife of yours," Jack said. "She's working double time right now."

"I know, Jacko. I'll make it up to her as soon as I can."

"See you tonight, Brother."

…..

That evening, Jack climbed into bed with Elizabeth and reached over her, grabbing the book from the nightstand. "Ready for some reading?"

"Sure," she answered, laying her magazine on the table.

Jack got comfortable with the pillows behind his back, and Elizabeth lay on her side with her head on Jack's chest. He turned to chapter one and began reading out loud.

January 28th, 2015 – Hope Meadows Ranch

With help from Sam, Rosemary, and Charlotte, the twins' party was ready, and their big day had arrived. Elizabeth enjoyed the extra time out of bed. Still taking it easy, she moved about the kitchen getting drinks and the party plates out.

Colton and Peyton buzzed through the kitchen repeatedly, shouting that they were four years old today. Noel was with them each time, closely followed by seventeen-month-old Autumn, trying hard to keep up. Blake, Austin, and Luke were busy playing a new game that Austin had gotten for Christmas while Stetson slept in Frank's arms.

Savannah was helping Elizabeth in the kitchen when she stopped and faced her aunt.

"Can I feel her?" Savannah signed.

"Of course."

The young girl laid her hands on either side of Elizabeth's belly and moved them around until she could feel her baby cousin. A smile covered her lips as she kept her hands over the most active area.

"This is so cool," she signed when she finally removed her hands.

"It's pretty amazing, isn't it?"

"Can I ask you something?"

"Of course, you can," Elizabeth answered.

"Does it ever hurt? The baby moving?"

"No, not really. She pushes on my bladder a lot, causing me to make frequent trips to the bathroom." The pair laughed as Savannah looked at Elizabeth's stomach.

"I hope a boy can like me one day," Savannah signed.

Elizabeth lifted Savannah's chin to look into her eyes. "Why would you say that? Of course, one will. You are beautiful, kind, and intelligent. You're amazing."

"But I'm deaf."

"Any boy that has a problem with that is not worth your time. There is someone out there for you. One day, you will find him, but you have plenty of time."

"Do you really think so?"

"Absolutely. God has someone just for you. And when it's time, he will bring the two of you together."

"Thank you, Aunt Beth." Savannah hugged Elizabeth and kissed her cheek.

"Don't ever let anyone make you feel less. You are a daughter of God, and no one can take that away from you."

Savannah nodded and smiled.

"Thank you," Sam said when Savannah left the room, having seen the conversation.

"No problem. She's a special girl."

"I've been trying to reassure her, but hearing it from someone else resonates more. She always had a special bond with Jack, so I'm not surprised to see her come to you. I'm glad she did."

"She can come to me anytime, Sam."

Also, having seen the interaction between Elizabeth and Savannah, Jack followed Savannah into the next room.

"What's going on?" Jack asked her.

"Nothing. Why?"

"Do you not feel worthy of a man's love?"

"What?"

"I saw what you asked Aunt Beth."

"Oh. I don't know. I'm just not sure any boy will like me this way."

"Savannah, you are perfect. And don't you ever let anyone tell you differently. You're my girl," Jack grinned.

"No, I'm not. Aunt Beth is your girl."

"Savannah, you're my special girl and always will be."

Savannah jumped into Jack's arms, hugging him tight and receiving one in return. "I love you, Uncle Jack," she signed after releasing him.

"I love you, too, S."

Jack turned to join the adults in the kitchen and found that Elizabeth had been watching him. Jack grinned and shrugged his shoulders as he walked toward her.

"You are just amazing," she said as he put his arms around her.

"No, I'm nothing special."

"Yes, you are. You always know just the right thing to say."

"No, not always. But I do try when it really counts. How are you feeling?"

"Well, I've spent way too much time in bed, so I'm feeling a bit worn out already. But I'll be fine."

"Okay. But be sure to let me know if you need to go lie down."

"I will," she replied, then kissed him. "Let's get this party started."

After lunch, cake, and presents, Elizabeth was sitting on the couch, her eyes heavy. Jack sat next to her and leaned in. "Do you need to go lie down?"

"Not yet. I'm alright."

"I'll get everyone to head home soon."

"No, I don't want to ruin the twins' day."

Jack looked at his children, who were playing with their new toys they'd just opened. "I'm pretty sure they will be fine."

"Just a little while longer," she pleaded.

"Okay. But just a little while, then we'll get you back in bed."

As Elizabeth rested and watched the children play, Sam, Charlotte, and Rosemary helped Jack clean everything up. Once finished, everyone began to say their goodbyes and leave.

Once everyone was gone, Jack helped Elizabeth upstairs to the bedroom, then left her to clean up and change while he put the kids to bed. When he came to bed, he picked up the book, found where they'd left off, and began reading out loud to Elizabeth.

A Thousand Tomorrows had become their evening ritual. Jack would read aloud while Elizabeth snuggled against him. Jack had read halfway through chapter six before noticing Elizabeth had fallen asleep. He closed the book, turned off the lamp, and slid into the bed alongside his wife, drifting off with his hand over her belly.

"How are your legs feeling?" Sam asked as she pulled the covers back to check Elizabeth.

"Fine."

"Have you been getting up now and then for a short walk?"

"Yes, every day."

"How about the exercises that the doctor gave you?"

"Every day as well."

Sam removed the blood pressure cuff from her bag and placed it around Elizabeth's arm.

"Your legs look good, and your blood pressure is good. So far, everything seems to be working," Sam smiled as she put all of her things back into the bag.

"Thanks for doing this, Sam. I would hate to have to be cooped up in a hospital."

"It's my pleasure," she replied as she sat on the edge of the mattress.

"What is that?" Elizabeth asked, pointing at something Sam had carried in.

"This...is a body pillow. It will soon become your best friend." Sam picked it up and laid it around Elizabeth, showing her different positions she would be most comfortable in.

With one leg on top of the long, curved, tubular pillow, as well as her head and one hand, Elizabeth felt the most comfortable she had in a long while. "This...is...marvelous," she said with a huge smile. "Thank you so much. This will make all the difference."

"You're very welcome. Now, what do you want to do?"

"How about a quick walk around the room and then a movie?" Elizabeth asked her sister-in-law.

Sam jumped to her feet and held her hands out, "Sounds great to me."

Jack returned home after dropping the kids off at his mother's and went upstairs, where Rosie was sitting with Elizabeth, and the pair was watching something on TV. When Jack looked to see what was showing, he froze.

"What are you two watching?" he asked after seeing the backside of a naked man as a woman walked around him with her hand on his scarred back.

"Shhhh...hold on," Rosie said, waving her hand at Jack.

Jack leaned against the wall and watched the television for a few minutes. The show was set in 1700s Scotland, and a man and a woman seemed to have just been married. As it ended, Rosemary turned and looked at him.

"Now, what were you saying?"

"I asked what you two were watching."

"Outlander," Rosie answered.

"Outlander? Never heard of it."

"It's new this season, and it's amazing," Rosemary added.

"I could see that."

"I'll be back tomorrow so we can watch another episode, Liz." Rosemary got off the bed and headed toward the door. "See ya, Jack."

"Bye, Rosie." Jack laid across the bed, facing his wife. "So, you like that show?" He asked while petting Wyatt, who was always at her feet.

"It was...quite good," Elizabeth grinned.

"Hmm mmm," Jack teased. "I'll be right back; I have a surprise for you."

"Really? What is it?"

"If I told you, then it wouldn't be a surprise." Jack ran out the door and returned with an arm full of packages.

"What is all of this?"

"Things for you to do." Jack pulled out a stack of coloring books and laid them beside his wife. "For you and the kids." Reaching into another bag, he revealed three books. "Three more Karen Kingsbury books since that one is so good."

Elizabeth picked them up and read each title: Like Dandelion Dust, A Time to Dance, and Angels Walking. "These are great, Jack. Thank you."

Reaching into another bag, Jack took out his next surprise. "This is a tray table with adjustable legs, and this section raises like an easel. It also has a small drawer on the side for you to store things."

"Oh, this is perfect," she said as she adjusted the table to the right height. "Thank you so much."

Jack picked up another package that he'd sat on the floor and removed a box. "I hope you like this. I wasn't sure what all you might need on here, so I had an employee help me build it." Jack opened the box, pulled out a laptop, and handed it to Elizabeth.

"Oh, Jack. This is wonderful." She set it on the table tray and opened the screen.

"I had them install a paint program and Photoshop so you can draw with this," he added as he held out a Wacom drawing tablet and pen.

"What is that?" she asked as she took the tablet from Jack.

"You plug it into the laptop, then draw on it with that pen. Whatever you draw shows up on the screen."

"Jack, this is all just so wonderful."

She held out her arms for Jack, and he walked to her side of the bed. After sitting on the edge, Jack put his arms around his wife and held her.

"Thank you, Jack. I love all of it."

Jack leaned back and put his hands on the sides of her face. With his eyes locked with hers, he replied, "You are going through so much for this family right now. I just wanted to make it a little easier for you. I hope these will help your days go by quicker."

"Oh, they most definitely will. I lose track of time when I draw, so this is perfect."

Jack's eyes moved down, following the length of his wife's body. He picked up the tray table and laptop and moved them to the floor.

"What are you doing, Cowboy?"

"Visiting with my daughter."

Jack lifted Elizabeth's shirt over her head, then moved to her pants. He eased them over her hips and slowly pulled the leggings off. He started at her ankles and began kissing up her legs. When he reached her stomach, Jack kissed the top of her belly. He closed his eyes and held the kiss, imagining that he was kissing his daughter's forehead.

"Hello, baby girl," he said softly against her stomach. "Are you being kind to your mommy's bladder today?"

"Oh, Jack," Elizabeth giggled, slapping him lightly on the shoulder.

Jack kissed her belly again, then laid his cheek against her skin. His daughter pushed against him, raising his head slightly, causing Jack and Elizabeth to chuckle. Jack laid beside his wife, keeping his cheek on her belly, as Elizabeth combed her fingers through his hair. The couple remained this way: Jack enjoying his daughter from the outside, Elizabeth feeling her movements from within. They shared this moment of their miraculous blessing together. It was as if their baby was bridging the gap between expectant mother and awaiting father. During a time, their experiences were very different, they felt like they were in this one together.

Jack lifted his head and moved up the bed, resting alongside Elizabeth. He kissed the top of her chest, across her collarbone, up her neck, and finished on her lips. His kisses were gentle, soft, and warm. His hand slid up her side, briefly grazing across her breast. He moved his hand to her neck; his fingers wrapped into her hair while he stroked her jaw and cheek with his thumb. He tipped her chin with his thumb, opened access to her throat, and pressed his lips to her skin.

Elizabeth moved her hand down, sliding it between the fabric of his pants and his skin, and took hold of his engorged member.

"Beth, no, let me..."

Jack's breath caught in his throat as he tried to talk, but Elizabeth didn't stop. Jack laid back and closed his eyes as Elizabeth's mouth covered his. It didn't take long for her to bring Jack to a climax, everything about her excited him, and when she took charge in this manner, it added fuel to the flame that burned inside him.

As Jack settled into the bed and pulled Elizabeth close to his side, he interlaced his fingers into her hair. "You're determined to help me pass that analysis, aren't you?" He asked jokingly.

"I'll do what little I can to help you out."

"That's most definitely more than a little." Jack tilted her head up and kissed her on the mouth. "I can't wait until we can be together again."

"Me, too, but that is a long way off. Six weeks after this little one arrives," she added while rubbing her tummy.

Jack slipped under the covers and hovered over her stomach. "Hey there, sweetheart. This is your daddy. I don't want you coming too early, but can you please not be late."

"Oh, my gosh, Jack," Elizabeth said as she threw the covers back and pulled on Jack.

He moved up until their lips met and kissed her hard. "What? I was just having a private conversation with my daughter. Do you mind?"

"I hate to break it to you, but you won't be having any private talks with her for a while."

"That's my point," Jack said before moving back down to her stomach. "Did you hear that, sweet girl? We can't even talk in private until you get out of there. So, don't be late."

"Jack, what am I going to do with you?"

Jack quickly moved back up and kissed his wife. "Before or after she's born?" he asked while wiggling his eyebrows.

Jack lay across the bed and looked at the laptop on the table tray. "Beth, that's amazing," he exclaimed after seeing the horse drawing she'd been working on. "You caught onto this very quickly."

"I wouldn't say that," Elizabeth said with a grin. "I trashed probably seven or eight different attempts before finally getting this one."

"Well, it's incredible."

Jack sat up and moved back against the pillows so he could watch Elizabeth draw. When she'd stopped for the day, Elizabeth picked up the book and handed it to her husband.

"Shall we see what happens next to Cody and Ali?"

"Are you staying awake long enough to get through a chapter?" Jack teased.

"No promises," she answered as she moved to her husband's side.

Jack began reading where he'd left off, and immediately they were drawn into the story. As he finished the chapter and began to close the book, Elizabeth reached up and stopped him, "Please read one more. I need to know what happens."

Jack grinned, opened the book, and started the next chapter.

Jack held the towel open for Elizabeth as she stepped out of the shower. He wrapped it around her, then picked up a second towel and wrapped it around her hair.

"Thank you, Jack," she said as she walked to the bedroom.

Jack had a pair of leggings, a t-shirt, and undergarments lying on the bed for his wife and helped her get dressed after drying her off. Once Elizabeth was dressed, Jack opened the bedroom door and returned to Elizabeth. She sat on the edge of the mattress while Jack towel dried her hair and then proceeded to comb it.

"I could get used to this," Elizabeth said with her eyes closed.

Jack kissed her shoulder, then began combing her hair again.

"Hi, Mommy!" Peyton shouted as she ran into the room.

"Good morning, baby. What have you been doing?"

"Coloring. See." Peyton held up her latest work of art for her parents to see. It was a momma horse and her baby standing in front of a barn, and Peyton kept most of the colors inside the lines.

"That's beautiful, sweetie. You did a great job," Elizabeth said as she held the page.

"Thank you, Mommy. It's for you. I go color Daddy's now." Peyton turned around and ran out the door.

"I wish I could bottle her energy," Jack said, laughing at his daughter.

As he combed his wife's hair, Elizabeth reached to her neck and started rubbing it.

"Is your neck bothering you?"

"My neck, my back...I am so tired of lying around."

"I'm sorry, baby," Jack said, then he began to massage her neck.

"Oh, that feels wonderful," Elizabeth said as she closed her eyes.

Jack worked her neck, shoulders, and down her back. He told her to lie down and gently rubbed her stomach, legs, and feet.

"That was perfect," she said when Jack finished. "Thank you."

"Happy Valentine's Day," Jack said, then kissed her.

"That's today? I can't even keep my days straight being cooped up in here all the time. I'm so sorry, Jack."

"For what?"

"I didn't get you anything."

"Elizabeth," he started, then placed his hands on her belly, "you have given me the most precious gift possible. I don't need or want anything else."

"But the kids," Elizabeth said, the sadness evident in her voice. "I didn't get them anything either."

"Sure, you did," Jack stated, then slid off the bed. He stepped into the closet and then returned with three bags. "One for each of them," he said as he set them in front of his wife.

Elizabeth looked in each bag, seeing candy, a couple small toys, and a stuffed animal. "Oh, they will love these."

Jack watched his wife and noticed an off tone in her voice. Seeing her eyes glisten from tears forming, he sat down on the mattress and took her hand in his. "What's wrong, Beth?"

"I'm supposed to do this."

"Do what?"

"This," she said, holding up one of the bags. "I'm supposed to go to the store and pick things out for their bags." Her tears spilled over and began to roll down her cheeks.

"I'm so sorry, Beth. I thought I was helping."

"It's not your fault, Jack. It's not like I could go anyway. Thank you for doing this for them."

"I'm sorry, Baby. I'm sorry you're going through this. I'm sorry it's so hard on you. I'm sorry I can't do more to help you."

"Jack, come here, please," Elizabeth said, holding out her hand.

Jack laid his hand in hers and moved onto the bed next to his wife.

"I'm just feeling sorry for myself. You have nothing to be sorry for. I'm thankful for what I'm going through because if I wasn't, then we wouldn't be meeting this beautiful little girl soon." Elizabeth laid her hand on her stomach and sat quietly as she felt her daughter move. Looking back at Jack, she laid her hand on his cheek. "And, Jack, you have done so much for me. More than I ever expected. So, to say that you wish you could do more, there just isn't anymore that you could do. You have done it all and then some."

"I still wish I could do more," he said.

"I know you do. And I love you for it." Elizabeth smiled and ruffled his hair. "You need a haircut."

"Yes, that's on my list of stuff to do...whenever I have time."

"Okay, that's it," Elizabeth said, then reached for her phone.

"What."

"My Valentine's Day gift for you."

"Beth, you don't need to get me anything."

"I'm not. I'm doing something for you." Elizabeth found the name she was looking for on her phone and pressed call. After a couple of rings, the person on the other end answered. "Good morning to you, too. Yes. Yes, thank you. I have a favor to ask you. Can you come and spend a few hours with the kids and me today? Yes. Perfect. Thank you. I'll see you then."

"Beth, what are you planning?"

Elizabeth had already pressed call to another person and held her finger up to her husband. "Hey there. No, I'm fine. I just have a favor to ask you. Can you please take Jack out today, and the two of you go do some...guy stuff. Yes. Yes. Oh, wonderful. Thank you. I'll let him know."

Elizabeth laid her phone on the bed, and a smile crossed her face.

"What did you just do?"

"Well, your mother is coming over to stay with me while you and Tom spend some time together." Elizabeth pushed her fingers through Jack's long hair. "And maybe you can get a quick haircut while you're out."

"Beth, I don't know. I don't feel comfortable about this."

"Jack. Your mom will be here with the kids and me. You don't need to go far; just go someplace. Go have a beer and listen to music, go shopping, watch a movie, anything. Just go have some fun with your brother."

Jack sat back, thought about it, then leaned toward Elizabeth and kissed her. "You are the best wife ever. Maybe I'll call Lee, too."

"Yes, that would be great. I'm sure he could use some guy time, too."

…..

Charlotte arrived an hour later with gifts for the kids. After receiving the presents from their parents and now from their grandma, the children kept themselves busy with their new activity books and toys. Charlotte and Elizabeth had a Bible study, lunch, and some coloring time with the children by the time Jack had returned.

A new lightness in his step didn't go unnoticed by Elizabeth and Charlotte as he entered the room with a large bouquet of flowers for Elizabeth and a smaller one for his mother. He pulled two flowers from each bouquet and headed down the hall to his daughter's room.

When he returned, he sat on the edge of the bed next to Elizabeth and kissed her. "Happy Valentine's Day, Beautiful."

"Right back at ya, Cowboy," she grinned. "I take it you had a good time with your brothers?"

"I did," he replied, nodding his head and grinning.

Elizabeth ran her fingers through his freshly cut hair, "Lookin' good, Cowboy."

Jack ruffled the back of this hair and nodded. "This was very much needed."

"Well, I am going home to fix supper for my husband," Charlotte said as she stood.

"Thanks for coming over, Ma," Jack said, standing and giving her a hug and a kiss on the cheek. "Tell Pops hi for us."

"I will. You two have a great rest of your day. I'm going to tell the kids goodbye, then I'll let myself out."

"Goodbye, Mom. Thanks for today," Elizabeth said.

"You're very welcome, dear."

Jack and Elizabeth watched Charlotte as she left the room, then Elizabeth looked at her husband. "So, tell me all about your day. I have to live vicariously through you right now."

"All three of us went to the barber and got haircuts...obviously. Then we headed to Cheddars Bar and Grill for lunch and a couple of beers."

"How was it? I know you'd wanted to try that place out."

"It was great. Best burger I've had in a long while."

"Maybe we can go there when I bust out of this joint," she teased.

"I will take you anywhere your little heart desires." Jack cupped her face in his hands and kissed her again.

"What did you guys do after that?"

"We went by the western wear store and walked around. Checked out the hats, the new boots that are out now, and what new Wrangler shirts were there."

"Did you buy anything?"

Jack tried to hold back a grin but was unsuccessful.

"What are you hiding?"

Jack heaved a sigh, then got off the bed and left the bedroom. A few seconds later, he returned with a large bag.

"What on earth did you get? Some new shirts?"

"Sort of," Jack said as he picked up the bag and turned it upside down. A pile of pink, denim, and ruffles poured onto the bed. "I couldn't help myself," Jack said with a grin and dimples.

"Did you buy out the whole store?" Elizabeth laughed.

She reached over and picked up a white onesie and read the front. This Actually is My First Rodeo was printed in pink, black and brown.

"That's for...well...her first rodeo." The smile on Jack's face said it all. He was so excited about the arrival of their daughter, and it was clear that it took everything he had to try to contain it.

"What else did you get?" Elizabeth asked.

Jack started holding up each outfit for Elizabeth to see. A white top that read Boots, Bows, & Rodeos with pink and white bottoms with fringe and matching headband, another white onesie with Forget Glass Slippers, This Princess Wears Boots, a pink onesie with a black and white cow printed tutu and matching leggings, a pink onesie with pink and green camo leggings, a pink onesie that simply read Cowgirl, and a black tee that read Hey Cowboy! with black and white cow printed shorts were only a few of the items Jack had purchased. Bell bottom jeans, black and white cow print shirt with denim shorts, a pink belt and pink ribbons, a denim Wrangler diaper cover and red and white checkered shirt, and a long-sleeved pink, burgundy, and grey plaid Wrangler shirt were also in the pile of purchases.

"Jack, there's so many," Elizabeth laughed.

"Oh, and look at this. Won't she be beautiful in this?" Jack held up a dress with a pink top, navy skirt with polka dots, pink ruffle, pink bow at the waist, and white tulle around the bottom.

"Yes, she will," Elizabeth replied. She picked up a few outfits and laid them on her lap.

"Oh, and of course, her first pair of boots," Jack said with a huge smile. He held up a pair of soft brown booties that looked like boots with pink crosses and wings embroidered.

"Oh, Jack. Those are adorable," she exclaimed, holding out her hand to take them.

"And I couldn't pass this up," Jack said, holding up another onesie.

Elizabeth laughed out loud when she read what was printed on the front. Printed in large white letters on the navy onesie was I'm Here For The Wrangler Butts.

"Well, it does seem to be a theme for you gals. So, I figured, why not." Jack laughed.

Elizabeth picked up each item, turning them over in her hands, inspecting each one, when Jack started toward the door.

"There's one more thing," Jack said as he stopped in the doorway.

"Okay? What is it?"

"You know, the other day when we talked about what we would do regarding the sleeping arrangements with the kids?"

"Yes, I thought we were going to put her in here."

"Yes. So, I...bought something today. I'll be right back."

Jack ran down the stairs while Elizabeth sat staring at the doorway, waiting to see what he'd purchased. She could hear him walking up the stairs, but he seemed to be carrying something heavy this time. As he walked through the double doors, Elizabeth saw that he was carrying a bassinet.

"Jack, that's perfect," she said as she clasped her hands together. "Bring it over here, please."

Jack carried it to the side of the bed and pushed it against the edge. He demonstrated how to lower the side. Showed her that it came with a diaper changing table attachment and had storage that hung on the end.

"This is wonderful," she said as she got out of bed.

"Beth, please be careful."

"I haven't been out of bed for two hours. I need to get up, and this is the perfect time." Elizabeth stood before her husband and put her arms around his neck. She kissed him hard and squeezed her arms around his waist. "Thank you so much for all of this."

"You're welcome, Beautiful."

"This day was supposed to be for you to go out and do something fun, though."

"Trust me, and you can ask Lee and Tom if you don't. I had a blast today."

Jack was smiling ear to ear, and Elizabeth reached up and touched his dimples. She could tell that he was being truthful. His face beamed with pride over his purchases, and she couldn't wait to hear the story from his brothers about their day.
