Chapter 7 Misunderstandings
Lucas was still hazy from the wonderful evening he spent with Elizabeth. He would be lying to himself if he said he did not want to be with her intimately. Lucas held the highest standards and had no intention of sharing intimate moments with anyone other than his wife. As sure as he was that Elizabeth was his love, he did not want to rush anything.
Lucas pulled up to Elizabeth's apartment door and knocked. Elizabeth answered. "You disappeared so early."
"I had to in order to get dressed. Elizabeth, I had the best night's sleep I have had in years. It made me realize what was truly missing in my life. Everything is better when I'm with you. Whether we are just talking, holding each other or sharing kisses. Being with you is magical."
"Lucas, I feel the exact same way. I can't tell you with words how amazing it felt to have you snuggled up beside me with your arm draped over me." She wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him in for a deep kiss. She pulled back just enough to look in his eyes. "You smell so good."
"We should go." He took her hand and led her to the car.
"Lucas my friends Rosemary and Lee are having a big party next Friday night and I would love it if you could go with me. They are celebrating their first wedding anniversary. They reserved The Grasshopper downtown."
"Elizabeth, why didn't you ask me for my club? I would have been more than happy to have thrown their party for them. I don't know if I can go to The Grasshopper."
"Lucas, we are so new. I didn't know if that was something I should put on you yet. I don't want you to feel like you must give special treatment to my friends. They have already paid the rental fee."
"Elizabeth, your friends will be my friends. I love doing things for your friends if it will make you happy. Elizabeth, I would prefer you did not go to that club!"
"Lucas are you asking me not to go to my best friends one year anniversary party?"
"No Elizabeth. I am asking you to have your friends throw their party at my club instead. I need you to trust me. I don't want you attending parties there. I will be more than happy to reimburse them for any expenses they have acquired."
"Lucas, I don't understand why it is such a big deal?"
They had just pulled up to the school. "We can talk more about it later. Please just talk to Rosemary and see if she is willing to switch her party. I will have the club completely closed for a private party. Let me know as soon as you talk with her." He kissed her on the forehead and departed.
Elizabeth was feeling very uneasy about the whole party now. She had no idea why Lucas was so insistent that they didn't have a party there but felt there was a long history.
She called Rosemary on her lunch break to talk to her. "Rosemary?"
"Elizabeth, it's very unlike you to call me on your lunchbreak. What is the matter?"
"I asked Lucas to accompany me to your party, but he got all weird and said he didn't want me to go there. He wanted me to talk to you about having your party at Bouchard's. He even said he would reimburse you your expenses and throw the party for free."
"Why on earth not?" Rosemary questioned.
"I am not sure. I got the impression that there is a story there. He said he wasn't sure he could be seen there. It may just be that they are a competitor of his, but I got the impression there is more to the story."
"I will discuss it with Lee, but Jesse works there so I think he got a discount."
"Let me know as soon as you can. Meanwhile I will try to get the rundown on the story from Lucas."
Later that afternoon Lucas picked Elizabeth up, but he was quiet. She could sense he wanted to talk to her about something. "Lucas what is wrong?"
"I feel like I need to explain something to you. It is not my information to share." Lucas, you cannot just tell me I can't go somewhere and not tell me why.
"It's just not safe Elizabeth. It is in a bad part of town and no place for a woman as beautiful as yourself. I need you to trust me please!"
"As flattering as that is. You cannot control where I go and what I do."
"Elizabeth, I don't want to control you just protect you. I can not do that if I'm not there. I haven't waited fourteen years to fall in love just to have the woman I love taken away from me."
"Y-Y-You love me? Lucas, you just said you love me." Elizabeth repeated in shock.
"Okay so I said it. So, what! It's not the way I wanted to profess my love for you, but I need you to understand the seriousness of the situation."
"Lucas, how can I understand if you don't tell me the story. If we are going to be a couple, then you need to tell me things. You can not just expect me to know."
"Please Elizabeth just trust me. I have your best interest at heart." Lucas said emotionally.
"Lucas, we have only been together a week and you are already keeping things from me, how am I supposed to trust you. I don't know if this is going to work."
"Elizabeth, please!" I beg you, don't do this."
"Just take me home." Elizabeth said all emotional.
Lucas pulled up in front of the door and dropped her off. "Elizabeth please I will call you." He pleaded trying to kiss her, but she turned her cheek and his kiss landed there.
She went inside and shut the door. Then she squatted down against the door and cried into her knees.
