Two Worlds, Two Souls

Chapter 13: Exploring Snowdin

Angel's Point of View:

It was many hours after I assumed before I woke and struggled to sit up. I was in a bed I wasn't familiar with, but my sister was snuggled into my arm, which calmed me down quickly. I sat up; doing my best not to wake her, and looked around the room I was in.

Blinding light came from the window that faced outside. Crystals were glowing much more than they had the day before and reminded me much of the sun glittering off the snow. It was almost too bright to look. I turned around, afraid I'd hurt my eyes if I stared too long.

Looking back into the room, I saw it was filled with soft colors of cream and yellows that were much warmer feeling then the stark white outside. A fireplace was lit in the side of the room that was roaring with heat, providing such comforting warmth to the room. A nightstand was on either side of the bed I was in while a sitting area was to the side.

How did I get here? I thought carefully about the day before to remember what happened. Most of my memories began to blur after Papyrus ran off from his final puzzle. I remember feeling quite relieved before Sans… led me?

I remembered vaguely following after his blue coat that walked only a couple feet in front of me. I remembered feeling his stare on me as we traveled the snowy roads, afraid I'd fall with boney fingers barely making their way into my vision as we walked. He made sure I made it there safely before he departed… and I think he may have paid for my room as well…

God damn it…

I slowly rose from the bed. Frisk grabbing after me once I was pulled away, but I was able to supplement myself with my pillow. She happily curled into it while I stood and walked to the bathroom we had hidden around the corner. I stepped inside to wash my face and stretch after such a tedious day before. I was sore, mostly in my legs and lower back from the entire day of walking and carrying Frisk for the final hour or so. My arms lightly ached, but I was sure that was more from Frisk using them like a pillow rather than anything else.

After getting cleaned up, I stepped out of the bathroom to see Frisk still sleeping, so I stepped past her to look out the window to see the monsters causally walking down the street. I could see that many small homes seemed to center around a large tree that was growing in the middle of town. Crystals seemed to be growing out of its bark, creating natural lights, but I saw no decorations on it. I assumed it was a natural tree that grew in the center of town that they used for Christmas. It was still a holiday celebrated a hundred years ago, I was curious how their traditions varied from our own.

The crystals were so beautiful… they reminded me of the ones at Toriel's-

My gut fell to the bottom of my being. Toriel! I forgot to call her the night before!

I sucked in a breath before I hurried into the hallway, using my foot to hold the door open a hair before pulling my cell out of my pocket. I was thankful it had bars for service and was still at four bars of power. I really lucked out…

I quickly typed away at the buttons, surprised to see there was nothing from Toriel during the night, and quickly hit her contact to get in touch with. The phone rang and I was surprised just how well I fell back into the habit of using a phone.

Three rings passed before I heard anything.

"Angel, is that you?!"

"Toriel…" I breathed out in relief when I heard her voice that didn't sound like she was going to hunt me down and take my soul. "I'm so sorry about yesterday… we meant to call, but we were dead tired when we got to Snowdin… We walked all day going through one person's puzzles that I ended up carrying Frisk at the end of it and Sans ended up paying for us to have a hotel room for the night when we finally made it here…"

"Well I'm elated to hear from you. I was so worried last night… but I didn't want to burden you while you started your journey." She said after giving me a moment to breath. "How's Frisk?"

I giggled lightly, glancing in the room to see my slumbering sister. "Still asleep. She was beyond worn last night when we made it in."

"I more than believe it. Frisk was always quite the little ball of energy. And she sleeps like a rock when it comes time to rest." Toriel giggled from the other end of the line. "You must have just gotten up. How does Snowdin look? Have you had much of a chance to look around yet?"

"Only from what I can see from my window. I saw a huge tree with crystals growing out of it in the middle of the town and a lot of houses and small businesses." I creaked open the door to glance at the snowy landscape through the window and see Frisk still sleeping in the room, even with all the light. "I'm excited to walk the streets later. I'm going to try and get in touch with Sans to see if he'd walk with me, since I have no idea where I'm going…"

"Just make sure not to rely on your boyfriend too much, Angel."

"Oh my lord, not you too Tori!"

"Well, regardless, I'm happy you two safely made it there. Let's speak tonight of your adventures, and I'd love to hear from little Frisk as well."

"Of course, we'll make sure to call you tonight before it gets too late. We won't have a repeat of last night."

"Good." The female told me. "I hope you two have a wonderful day. Do be careful, and keep me informed."

"Of course, Tori. Bye."

"Good-bye."

After that moment I heard the dial tone as she was no longer there. I sighed, relieved that she wasn't angry with us for forgetting to call her the day before. I wouldn't make that mistake again.

I hurried back into the room to see Frisk still sleeping on the bed. She hadn't moved since the last time I'd looked at her, so peacefully asleep. It would still be a hour or two before she'd wake.

I looked around the room then to see if Sans had left any means to contact him before I looked at the side table. A slip of paper was sitting there with a doodle of a skeleton drawn on it.

I chuckled and opened up to see a message

Call me when you're up- Sans

He'd left me a phone number at the bottom of the paper as well. I plugged it into my phone quickly to ring him, heading back out into the hallway to avoid waking Frisk. The phone rang three times before it picked up.

"Hello?"

I smiled when I heard his voice. "I never did thank you for what you did for Frisk and me last night. So, thank you, Darling."

"Precious, good to see yer up." Sans chuckled on the other end of the line. "Ya been up long?"

"Only long enough to call Tori and pray she didn't want to kill us after we forgot to call last night. But I have all of that settled. Frisk is still sleeping in the room, but I have to admit, I'm pretty hungry." I glanced down the end of the hall where a large picture window sat looking over the small town. "Is that offer to go to Grillby's still open?"

"Hell yeah," I could hear the crunching of snow under his feet. "It's time for breakfast anyway. I'll meet ya at yer room in just a minute. I know a shortcut."

"I bet you do." I giggled at him, thinking of his teleportation ability. "I also have no idea where our room keys are, so I don't dare leave the room or Frisk until I have my hands on one. I'd better write a note for her…"

"I got the cards on hand with me. Sorry, meant to leave them on the desk last night, but they ended up in my pocket after ya two got inta bed."

"I understand." I sighed. "We were so tired last night. I don't even really remember how we got here…"

"Determination I think is the word you're lookin' for, Precious." I gasped as I heard his voice in my ear as well as behind me. Sans chuckled before I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around and there he stood, phone to the side of his face, playful grin on him like the Cheshire cat, and two keys in his hands to get into the room we were staying in.

"Hey." As my phone snapped shut to end the call between us, I couldn't stop the smile make its way onto my face before I reached forward to hug him. Sans returned the affection before he pulled back and handed over the cards. "Thanks. I kinda needed those."

"Sure thing, Angel." Sans gestured to the inside of the room "Should we wake up Frisk? She must be hungry."

"No, she'll sleep a little while longer." I shook my head before peaking in the door at my sister. "I'll grab her something while we're out and leave her a note. Frisk would rather sleep then be woken, even for food. Let me just leave her a note so she'll stay here until we get back."

"Well, alright then." Sans only shrugged in response. "Go get yer stuff Angel, it's cold for ya out there."

"Okay." I quickly hurried to where Frisk slept and used another paper there to write a note for her so she wouldn't freak out before walking back to Sans who stood patiently at the front door. Once I was set, I hurried to pull on my boots and jacket, setting both cards in my pocket before following after the skeleton that led me down the hallway. I was quick to grab onto his arm to avoid being separated once we stepped outside the building.

Upon the ground floor, I was surprised to hear laughter from inside the inn. A roaring fire was on the further wall which monster children all looking like bunnies and rabbits that danced around together. I saw a female rabbit that looked much older than the children who stood behind the desk, watching them and helping another customer who had seemingly just walked in from the cold. She glanced at Sans and I for a moment before returning to her work, not judging or anything once she saw my face.

I suppose Sans was right then… people here didn't seem to mind humans, at least not yet…

I waited until we were outside to say anything about it to Sans. I was glad he told me to bundle up, it was brisker that day and the wind much more chilling than I remembered it being the day prior.

"You weren't joking, were you?"

"Jokin' 'bout what, Precious?"

"About humans not really being a topic that people worried about here. That rabbit there, she hardly batted an eye when she saw me."

"Yeah, well, Bernie's always been good like that." Sans led me away from where I saw the inn stood and a shop that was directly next to before being surrounded by houses that were scattered with much room for children to play. "She and her sister, Vicky, who runs the shop next door, always have seen all kinds of monsters coming through their doors. A human isn't really a worry ta 'em when they have customers and guests ta take care of."

"Okay." I smiled as I continued to follow the skeleton. My arm was wrapped in his own, gripping onto the edges of his jacket that covered the bone of his elbow. He himself had his hands tucked into his pockets to keep them nestled and warm. "Tell me Sans… do skeletons get cold?"

"Nah, it just goes right through us."

A squeal of laughter escaped me and I had to hold onto his arm to keep myself from falling. Sans gave me a moment to recover before he continued to walk. I was more using him to drag me along as I composed himself.

"Good one. But seriously Sans, does it bother you?"

"Eh… on occasion." Sans simply shrugged at me. "I'm a bit more susceptible to it the Pap is, so I don't go very far without m'coat. Also, each sentry stand has a crystal from Hotland ta keep it warm and radiant heat. When it dies out of energy, we replace and put back the used out one so it'll recharge and be used again at a later date. Lot of people use them in their homes along with wood."

"That's so amazing…" I glanced at people's homes that we passed as we traveled down the street that was on the way closer to the large tree in the center of town. I wasn't sure just how far we'd go toward it, but it was more amazing to look at the closer we got. "The crystals down here are amazing… a renewable resource that could be recharged! That must prevent a lot of pollution down here."

"Yeah… we try not to waste much if we can avoid it. With limited supplies down here from what filters down from the surface and bein' trapped here, we have ta make do with what we got."

His comment brought upon a slightly sadder mood. It reminded me that everyone here, while making due and living their life to the fullest, has never been free, always a prisoner simply because of who they were.

"I'm sorry Sans…"

"Sorry?" He blinked at me, pausing mid step. "For what?"

"For you being trapped down here…" I sighed. "I know that we've only known each other for a short time, but it hurts when I think about the fact that none of you have ever been to the surface, or that it was ripped away from you without doing anything besides being yourselves. My kind disgusts me…"

I didn't feel like I could tell him yet it was my own family that was the one who trapped him and countless others down here in the past. I didn't feel like that would be kind. I also knew that we weren't close enough yet that I could do that to him. I trusted him quite a bit, even with all the problems I've had I the past. But I felt that more time to establish that bond I was forming with him was needed before I hurled that shit storm at him.

Sans looked away from with a solemn face, but simply shook his head and gave me a grin regardless of whatever thought passed over his mind.

"Don't worry about it, Angel. Yer not the one who made the decision, it isn't yer fault."

I slowly nodded to him, even as the guilt crept up inside me.

Sans and I contained on our walk and soon arrived at the tree that I remembered seeing from down the street earlier at the inn. It was beautiful up close, seeing all the crystal that glowed over the branches. They reminded me of the fireflies that used to travel through the meadows and trees in the night time. They used to give off the same magical glow that I was seeing then.

"It's beautiful…"

Sans paused for a moment to see where I was looking as we were on the underside of the tree. "This tree… would ya believe it's older than any of us even comin' to the underground?"

I whipped my head around to face him in shock. "No way…. Is that even possible? I didn't know a tree could exist for that much time! Do you know how old it is?"

"Some of the botanists down here estimate it to be around three hundred years old, which would explain its size and crystal formation." Sans chuckled at my excitement and led me over to it to get a closer look. "Most of the younger trees that grow in the climate here don't have crystals on 'em yet. Apparently it's a trait that doesn't take effect until trees are about a hundred years old. Only a select few have made it ta that size or age. The rest are too young that we've been usin' as wood or buildin' material. But… no one's got the heart ta chop this one down. We use it for Christmas."

"Oh! You celebrate that holiday too?!" I gasped loudly, but very excitedly kept probing my new friend for information. "I guess that would make sense… Christmas has been celebrated since before the time your people were placed down here…"

"Yeah, we'll be gettin' ready for it soon." Sans looked up at the tree happily. "Only 'bout a couple months away, with it bein' October now."

"Is it really that late in the year already?" I couldn't believe it to be perfectly honest. When my sister and I were still up on the surface, it had felt still like we were in the mist of summer… actually... that would be true. We fell months ago. Toriel found us back in the summer season, but now we were in the middle of fall, heading into winter soon. I couldn't believe how fast the time had gone and I'd never noticed it.

Perhaps that was a feature of being below ground? Not aware of how time was moving around.

"Yeah, I started talkin' with you around the end of June or beginnin' of July. Been almost three months since then, which puts us in October."

"Wow… I can't believe it's been that long…"

"Your sense of time is terrible Angel." Sans snickered before I felt him pull me to a stop. "But here we are. Good ol' Grillby's."

I glanced up then and saw that in the time that Sans and I were chatting, we'd passed the tree in the center of town and went to a restaurant right behind it. With large letters that glowed above, written as Grillby's over our heads, a small quaint shop sat before us of more wooden tones. I saw a fire going inside the building and the smell of breakfast sandwiches and burgers hit my nose.

"Oh, that smells good…" My stomach growled at the scent. I was quick to cover it as if to hide the sound, but Sans heard it. He laughed at my misfortune as I stood there with a blush on my face, unable to hide my hunger.

"Come on Precious, let's get ya some food."

Sans led me inside there then. He opened the door that sounded off the bell above our heads to alert someone in the back. I was surprised to see a person with a body of fire standing there in a suit, without the jacket, behind what appeared to be a bar in the back past all the tables and booth seats. Small glasses sat on the ridge of his flaming face and glanced over at me, though I couldn't see his mouth at all. He was wiping down a glass as we walked into the restaurant and bar.

"Here Angel, let's head up at the bar so we can chat with Grillbz." Sans motioned me to follow him up to the counter where he and I both grabbed a tall chair that had us off the ground. My feet dangled for a moment before they found a ring below me to catch on and sit while we sat in anticipation for the fire monster. "Mornin' Grillbz."

"Good morning, Sans." The voice that came from the monster was low, but had a crackling sound to it, much like wood that was burning apart in the center of a fire. It was so intriguing to hear, I never knew a voice could sound like that, however, he was made of fire… "And who is this?"

"This is Angel. Ya know, the girl from up near the ruins I was telling ya about." Sans gave his friend a sly grin as he leaned against the counter. "And Angel, this is Grillby, but also goes by Grillbz. One of my best friends."

I held out a hand for him to shake. "Pleased to meet you, Grillby."

Grillby stared at my hand for a moment, making me a bit concerned that I did something that I wasn't supposed to do, before he reached forward and shook it. Only then did I realize just how warm his hands were, but not burning my skin.

I was very fascinated…

"If I'm your best friend, then why don't you pay your tab more often?" Grillby seemed to get a bit heated as he released my hand before I saw the flames on him seemed to flare. He sighed and the flames on his body receded before he turned back to me, ignoring Sans. "But it is good to meet you too Angel. Good to see Sans finally brought his girlfriend over to meet me, huh?"

The comment had Sans choking on his own breath before I could stop him. A roaring blush came to my cheeks that caused me to turn away, leaving poor Sans to fend for himself.

Hey, it was his friend.

"Wha- Grillbz!" Sans' fist landed on the counter with a slam. "Don't embarrass her like that!"

However, it wasn't the worst I'd heard before. Frisk constantly tested my patience and my ability to handle embarrassing things such as this. A few cracks about Sans and I from another person more startled me then bothered me. However, with the strange emotions I felt for my new close friend, I couldn't stop the heat from sticking around in my cheeks.

The fire male only shook his head, a crackly chuckle escaping his body. "Seems to me like you're more embarrassed than she is."

"I'm fine Sans," I tapped his arm to bring his attention back to me. He was blushing nearly as hard as I was; yet the smile on my face seemed to ease him a bit. "Grillby seems to enjoy teasing you though."

"Well, I have nothing better to do with it being so quiet. And he owes me this week's tab still." Grillby placed down the glass he'd cleaned before me. "What would like for a drink, Darlin'?"

"Oh, I actually don't know what you have…?" I quickly turned to Sans for help, unsure of how different this world's food was compared to my own.

"Don't everyone above have orange juice for breakfast or somethin'?" was the skeleton's reply.

I smiled and turned back to our host. "Orange juice sounds great if you have it."

"Comin' right up. And I'll get Sans his usual then." Grillby left then to the back to grab what it was we wanted. When he vanished from sight, Sans laid his head on the counter.

"Damn it…"

I blinked at him, the warmth in my cheeks was fading quickly due to how Sans was struggling. "Are you okay?"

"What?" Sans lifted his head to look at me, the dark blue blush still in his cheek bones. It was one of the first times I'd ever seen him without a smile or a grin. "Yeah, I'm good Precious. Just… a bit annoyed."

"Hmm…" I hummed for a moment while I thought about it and suddenly a thought came to mind. A sly grin came to me. "We could always pull a Frisk."

"Such as?"

"Pretend to actually be a couple."

If Sans had a drink already, he would have spat it out already from the way he barely could breathe this morning. I couldn't help the giggle that escaped me at his misfortune. Sans gave me an unimpressed look while he tried to compose himself.

"Sorry, it was just an idea. I thought I'd be funny."

Sans wiped the side of his mouth. "How is it funny ta pretend date someone?"

"Think about it this way," I leaned onto my hand as I looked at him. "What do you think Papyrus would say if you told him you were dating a human? Or even dating in general?"

Sans was quiet for a moment, an uneasy look on his face before he thought for a moment. He carefully tapped a finger to his chin while he debated before a huff of a laugh escaped him.

"See?" I leaned forward to be in his line of sight when he tried to evade me. "Funnier than you think, right?"

"Ah come on Angel," Sans' voice softened up as well did the look on his face, back into a much better mood. "I can't do that ta Pap."

"Well, what if we let him in on the joke?"

"He'd tell everyone or wouldn't be able ta keep the secret."

I pouted. "Well shucks…"

"Maybe I should start watching out for ya?" Sans chuckled as Grillby returned with my drink and a bottle of ketchup for Sans. "Yer more devious than I originally thought."

"Well, I am Frisk's sister." I shook my head before I took a sip of my orange juice. "You should have seen our father. It's where she gets it from."

I smiled as I thought back to the memories of the two of them raising hell while I watched from the side lines with my mother. I remember so many days that were filled with love and laughter, unfortunately, those times came to an abrupt end.

Sans seemed to sense the change in me almost instantaneously. One moment, I was happily talking about my sister and family, before it all changed to quiet. I felt his boney hand on my shoulder that brought me back to where we were in Grillby's restaurant.

"Do ya need a moment ta think before ya order Angel?"

"Uh… is there a menu?"

"Grillbz doesn't really have one, it's just pancakes and breakfast sandwiches in the mornin' and burgers and a few others things durin' the later hours-"

Grillby's hand smacked the counter before Sans could finish his thought. "I do too have a menu Sans. Just because you don't need it or others don't normally, doesn't mean she doesn't need one." Grillby was quick to hand me a small menu from under the counter. "Here you go, Darlin'."

"Thank you, give me just a moment." I quickly skimmed the small paper menu in my hands before I saw that there were omelets. "Oh! Omelets? Do you have enough material for one of those?"

Grillby nodded. "I do."

"Oh wonderful!" I cheered at actually having one. "Could I perhaps have the bacon temptation one then? With mushrooms and extra cheese sauce if possible?"

"I'll get working on that, and Sans, you want the usual?"

Sans chuckled and gave his old friend a salute. "Ya know it Grillbz."

"Give me about ten to fifteen then. I'll check on you two in a minute."

Grillby left us then to hurry into the back with our orders. I was actually surprised by it, but Grillby looked quite pleased with my order that I'd asked of him. Did people not like omelets very much?

"Well, ya made him quite happy." I turned my attention back to Sans who was leaning his skull into the palm of his hand. "Haven't seen Grillbz like that for a while. Not many people try some of his different types of food down here and tend ta stick with the common ones they like."

"Like you?" I raised my eye brows at him.

Sans shrugged at me, not at all bothered by the comment. "What can I say? I'm a creature of habit."

"Well, it's always good to try something new here and there. 'Change is good for the soul', as they say."

"Eh…" Sans didn't show much enthusiasm for my words. "I guess so…"

The mood simmered a bit at his comment that made me a bit worried for him. He was going out of his way to help me, so I didn't feel like I could comment on his behavior at that moment. However, I did appear that Sans was pretty… detached in certain areas. He seemed quite invested when it came to his brother or my sister and I, yet others didn't seem to even faze him.

Was it perhaps the notion that none of them were going to leave here? Was it the feeling of being trapped down here for the rest of their lives? I could imagine that everyone was sir crazy from that fact as they continued to live out their lives here. Sans was born here, subject to the decision or punishment of our ancestors. He never deserved that, and I'm sure others felt the same way he did.

I was different, I came from the surface and had so many new things that I could tell him of. I had stories, experiences, and just being human in general was different from the norm he was used to. The change he was drawn to, but perhaps scared at the same time? I had absolutely no idea…

Never did it cross my mind that it could be something different then that…

"Still, Grillby has a beautiful place." I carefully looked around the restaurant and bar location that was before me. It was a cozy looking bar which Grillby took great care of. The wood on all the walls and tables were polished to a 't' and the lighting wasn't too bright. Windows were large to let in natural light and show the life out on the streets. He was taking advantage of the crystals reflecting light off the snow to keep the location from feeling to dark. The fireplace and the bar seemed to tie it all in together, giving it such a cozy feeling.

"You know, he's the third ta own it."

I let my eyes travel back to my companion. "Truly?"

"His father and grandfather owned this place before he got it. Runs in the family." I saw Sans actually take the ketchup bottle next to him and squirted some of it into his mouth. My eyes widened and my jaw slightly went limp at the sight. "What?"

"Um… is ketchup a drink down here?"

"What?" Sans looked to his drink before back and me before he laughed. "Nah, Precious. It's just a thin' I like. Ya get used ta it."

"Oh, okay." I slowly nodded to him before taking a drink of my own juice before me. "So… from the way you and Grillby talk to one another it sounds like you've been friends a long time."

"We have." Sans took down some more ketchup before hiccupping and I saw some light color to his cheeks.

Was he… getting drunk off of ketchup?

Ignoring the sight before me, I questioned the skeleton further. "For how long?"

"Years, our parents were friends with one another." Sans sighed, taking long swig of the ketchup bottle. "We grew up together. He'd help me look after Papyrus a lot of days here while his dad worked…"

Sans paused then and it seemed to be no longer with me. I watched as he seemed to retreat into his own memories. It seemed that talking about parents was just as hard for him as it was for myself.

And that I could relate to…

"Sorry if I brought up a bad memory…" Sans almost jumped in his seat, as if he forgot that I was there, before turning to face me. "I didn't make you mad, did I?"

"Nah… just rememberin' better times." Sans waved me off then and I decided not to pressure him. I didn't want to irritate him, let alone ruin the good relationship we had going.

But I couldn't help how curious I was.

I was thankful in that moment that Grillby came out with our meals then. I left Sans on his own for a bit who was given a breakfast sandwich while I had a large omelet placed before me. I eagerly began to cut the item that seemed almost to glow after I poured the extra cheese sauce on top of it. I took my first bite of my food and had to suppress a squeal before I dove in and began to wolf down my food. I was starved, and such a delicious piece that was so creamy, held such rich flavor, and looked so amazing.

How could no one want this?

"Easy there Angel!" Sans was quick to pat my back and I was hurrying through my meal. I swallowed hard before reaching for my juice and downing it to ease the pain I felt in the back of my throat and as the food slowly passed down to my stomach. I glanced over at Sans and Grilby who were watching with stunned fascination.

"What?" I licked my lips and took another bite; however, this one was smaller in size. "It's really good and I'm hungry."

That caused the skeleton to shake his head. "Yeah, but no one's gonna take it from ya."

I narrowed my eyes at my friend. A knife in my hand pointed in his direction which caused him to flinch. "I haven't eaten since yesterday afternoon. I'm starved. So sue me."

Just as quickly as I'd threatened him did I return to my food and continued to eat. Both men hardly said a word as I took in a few more bites before I managed to slow down and enjoy the meal even more then I was before. Once the food had truly begun to settle in my belly did I finally ease up and breathe.

"Much better…" I carefully took a bite now that I wasn't as hungry as I had been before. I quickly turned to the chef. "Grillby, this is amazing! Thank you so much! And… sorry if I startled you both… I gave Frisk all the snacks yesterday on our hike from the ruins and it left me a little hungry…"

"A little?" Sans sighed, but he no longer seemed on edge. He rolled the little eyes in the back of his black sockets before he pointed the ketchup bottle at me. "And here I thought ya were saner than yer sister."

I giggled at him. "Only most of the time, even I have my breaking point."

"If you two are done having your little 'lover's quarrel'…"

"What?!" Grillby snickered at Sans' reaction to the comment while I could only giggle.

"Don't be embarrassed, Darling." I gave Sans a sly look while he flushed and even darker blue. "He's just showing his approval of our relationship."

"Ugg…" Sans let his head hit the counter while Grillby and I laughed at his misfortune.

"I never thought it would be so easy to talk to a human," Grillby chuckled from where he stood. "My grandfather always said how dreadful your kind were, but meeting you has put any of those worries to rest."

I chuckled nervously. "Don't ease up too much just yet. I don't like my kind much either. Folks down here have been much kinder and accepting of me then humans…"

"Perhaps you just haven't met the right ones yet?" Grillby noted as he cleaned a few dishes before him. "It was once said that humans and monsters could all be bad, it was their choice. The fact that I can see even a single human in front of me who hardly puts me on edge certainly has made me believe that fact. Maybe we'll reach the day where humans and monsters will be united again, or even friends. I know I'd like that for my little girl."

"Your little girl?" I questioned with a new-found interest. "You have a family, Grillby?"

"Yes, here." Grillby grabbed a photo frame that he had laying against the side of the counter next to where he could constantly stand watch over his patrons in the room. "This is my wife, Sarada, and my daughter, Fuku."

The photo he gave me was an adorable frame with the fire monster standing beside two others, both also monsters of flames coating their bodies, but the other two were of a startling green color rather than Grillby's traditional orange. The woman stood next to Grilby was wearing an elegant dress of rich red coloring and reminded me of a hostess who sat you at the table of a fancy restaurants I used to go to as a child. Her frame was thin, it was easy to tell as she stood holding Grillby's arm and her second hand was to hold still the eager child before the two of them. Dressed in a school uniform that reminded me of Japanese culture, the little girl before them was in a blue and white uniform with a red tie around her neck.

"Oh Grillby, their beautiful!" I gushed over the two in the photo with him. "I'm so jealous of your wife right now, she looks killer in that dress she's wearing. I didn't think that someone could be so thin and not look ill! And your little girl, Fuku? Her flame color may match her mother, but she looks an awful lot like you."

"Well thank you." Grillby took back the frame from me and placed it where it was supposed to sit. "Fuku's at school right now over in Hotland and my wife unfortunately has been ill otherwise I'd introduce you."

"Ill?" Sans intruded the conversation with worry in his voice. "What's goin' on with Sara?"

"Seems like that bug that's going around Sans. You and Papyrus better make sure to be careful not to get sick." Grillby glanced over back to me. "You and your little sister too."

"We will." I nodded to him quickly before taking another bite of his food. "Could I perhaps have you fix up a dish to go for my sister as well? She's sleeping back in the hotel room from yesterday. Papyrus wore us out."

Grillby shook his head. "Yeah… he does that. Now, you want something different for your sister?"

"She'd love an omelet. Just like mine except no mushrooms. I'll never hear the end of it otherwise."

Both of the men laughed at that comment.

Later That Morning:

"So, Sans, where is Papyrus now?" The comment came from my lips once we had left Grillby's to head back to the hotel room where Frisk we were sure was going to eat the inn if we didn't get breakfast back to her soon. Grillby had kindly whipped up another omelet for Frisk (of course without mushrooms for her) and Sans was quick to tell the fire monster who served us to put it on his tab.

I was going to fight him on it, but Sans waved it off and told me to save my money for the inn to stay there a few nights. Once the subject of the inn came up, Grillby had been quick to agree with his old friend and send us on our way. Why, I wasn't sure. Sans promised me he'd tell me once we got away from Grillby's incoming patrons.

So that led us to where we were on the walk back. My question still hung in the air. Sans looked at me for a moment before I saw him sigh, heated breath leaving him, even though he had no organs to heat the air he took in and out. I could only assume it was his magic that would do so…

"Pap is havin' a friend over at the house. A close friend of ours as well as the captain of the guard."

That made me stiffen up as we walked. "Are we safe out here?"

Sans nodded. "At the moment, yeah. Pap and Undyne are probably havin' their trainin' session right now at the house. So, while that's goin' on and until I know Undyne's plans a bit better, ya and Frisk better hunker down at the inn."

"How were we safe this morning?" I blinked at him in question as we walked around the center of town, the beautiful tree covering in crystals that soared above our heads in height.

"Undyne had the day off, she was over at our place around eight. When they train, they head out into the passageway that leads ta the entrance ta Waterfall. That's not far from where Pap and I live. Undyne thankfully only comes over on the weekends or her days off since Pap asked her ta train him, but with ya guys just gettin' here and Pap most likely tellin' her about ya…"

"No, you're right." My grip on his arm tightened at the conversation. "I can't risk Frisk, not until others can vouch for us and we have a fighting chance against those that may want to kill us. Until times get a bit safer, I don't want to risk as much as I can. Any advice you have to offer or tips to use, I'd greatly welcome them."

"Well, Undyne will probably be hangin' until she has patrol on Monday. Ya'll be good after that. She patrols the more populated areas as well as keeps the kids in line that head over to Hotland or Waterfall for school. Bein' the head of the royal guard, she normally sticks closer ta our king then not. Durin' the week, that's normally where she ends up. So, durin' those times when she's off and not in those areas, it'd be wise to either hole up in the inn or head back ta the ruins at least until she gets clear." Sans shook his head as we closed in on the inn. "She'd be the worst person to find ya, she's quite the determined monster and we only need-"

"-one more human soul to break the barrier." I finished his comment while the two us glanced at each other with sad eyes. "So I've been told."

"Yeah, so durin' the days ya guys are here for a while, I can grab ya and yer sister some food and give ya tips about this world and Undyne."

I nodded eagerly to him. "I'd greatly appreciate that. Shall we head back? I need to see how long I can stay at the inn for what money I have and talk to Toriel about moving back with her on some weekends. Frisk is probably going ta eat the bed too if I don't hurry up."

Sans snickered. "Whatever ya say, Precious."

I felt a heated breath leave me. "Don't push it, Darling."
