Two Worlds, Two Souls
Chapter 27: Promises
Angel's Point of View:
"Oww…" My sister whined as she sat on the ground by the back door to our home in Snowdin. She struggled with increasing her magic amplitude against those that could use color coating magic against her, such as if to keep her soul protected from Papyrus and Sans trying to turn her or I blue. Frisk still suffered from a lack of determination in the realm of learning, so her magic still lacked. She had not gone through all the struggles I had as we grew up. However, my sister was eager to learn to learn to prevent other monster from using color coating magic against us. Sans had stated before that there were six different types of colors that one could be coated in and dealt different effects. Some were helpful while others were a restriction.
The brothers briefly explained that they had the ability to work with blue, cyan and orange coatings, which gave us quite the challenge to face against them if or when effected. Blue was the effects of heavy gravity upon us, causing an unbearable weight to keep us sluggish and unmoving, sometimes even giving the effects of feeling drunk. That was what my sister dealt with when she battled Papyrus all that time ago alone.
The other types were different however, Sans and Papyrus demonstrated both cyan and orange to us, which were actually opposite magics to one another. Cyan required its target not to move or else pain would be inflicted, whereas orange demanded the target move constantly or else pain was inflicted. Both were intriguing as I listened into them as well as watched each effect.
The other colors, which the brothers weren't able to show us themselves, were green, purple and yellow. Purple was the only other one that was a restriction, which seemed to constrict limbs and bound them together, forcing your only movement to be by jumping with your body as a whole.
It sounded like it was a skill that I would need to observe in order to understand better…
Green and yellow were more helpful then harmful in the terms of magical battles between those of the underground. Green was described as providing a shield to defend one's self with, the only drawback was that escape was near impossible. We were told that Captain Undyne had that kind of magic… and honestly I wasn't sure if I was more worried or terrified at that…
Yellow was the final one which actually allowed you to create little electrical bullets from your fingers that you shot at your opponent. They were quick and precise, so long as your aim was half decent. Sans had a friend who could use the ability, a woman by the name of Alphys. He'd mentioned the name once or twice before, and I knew Papyrus had too, but we were too preoccupied with our lesson and training that we'd forgotten.
"Don't worry Frisky, you'll get it next time." A pat to her should had my sister panting at the energy she was using before she stood, using my arm to assist her with standing. "Still, you've covered a lot in the last couple of days. You've managed to increase the amount of chains you can summon to three."
"Dang it…" my sister pouted before she stuck her fingers at the brothers who stood only a few feet away from us. Papyrus eagerly waiting to be told to try again while Sans lazily stood at his side, waiting for the order as well. Papyrus was trying to strength his grip and quickness of using said magical ability on the two of us. Papyrus had, unfortunately, failed in breaking my chains. Thus, he was struggling to use his magic to coat my soul in color.
Papyrus was doing much better after the talk he and I had managed to have the couple day prior to this training session. After we hashed things out, he came around to assist with Christmas decorations, though he took some time off from work to stay home and spend time with family. He was eager to practice baking and cooking again, even if he didn't truly bring that to light.
However, the largest reason he refused to leave home was more along the lines of not running into Robert.
Sans on the other hand was using a gentler hand on Frisk to help her practice. Sans actually stunned me with how good he was with her, any suggestions that he would give out in order to help her do better.
"O-one more time!" My sister demanded as she struggled to holder herself up, leaning a bit on me. "J-just… one more time…"
"Yes," Papyrus begged his brother and I. "Once more! Please?"
I raised my eye brow at my sister. "You know that this prevents us from going out to Grillby's, right? I know Papyrus doesn't mind it, but you? Willingly doing anything that means not having food sooner the expected?"
"I'm determined!" Frisk pouted, glaring at me. "Just one more time Angel! Please?"
"Alright…" I rolled my eyes while my sister got into position before Sans. The older skeleton could only chuckle as he watched her before sparing me a single quick glance. One that told me Sans was ready for a break at Grillby's and planned to make this last bout as draining as possible to get us to the food.
Of course he would….
"Miss Angel! The Great Papyrus is ready to try again!" Papyrus cheered from his spot, letting a dark blue glow cover his fingers while he powered up his magic. I giggled at his eagerness, but even I was a tad tired and quite hungry at that point.
"Be prepared to be a tough as you can Papyrus, I won't be going easy on you!"
"Good! Nothing else is worthy of the Great Papyrus!"
"Okay then, be ready." Quickly did I feel my magic activate and wrap around my body thickly, providing multiple layers of protection from Papyrus' magic. Frisk attempted to do the same as she struggled to coat her chest before Sans unleashed his magic upon her. She and Papyrus were always given a minute to power up before either attacking or defending.
Watching the two of them struggling to gather power, Papyrus I saw was able to collect a thick glow of blue magic around his hand before using it on me while Frisk struggled to more than two or three chains to protect herself. I saw only two make it before Sans' eye glowed brightly and my vision turned red.
"Start!"
Both brothers threw down their arms in an attempt to affect the other.
Instantaneously Frisk fell to the ground under the weight of Sans' attack. She couldn't hold herself up, nor avoided the blue coating that Sans used against her, shattering the chains that tried to protect her body.
Papyrus hardly fared better. He struggled to pull down his arm while his magic struggled to break through my chains that protected me. My will was too potent for him and he couldn't break it. While he lasted a bit longer then my sister, it was only moments after that he feel to his knees. Papyrus struggled to keep standing as he tried to fight my will, ultimately giving up after a few more moments, releasing his magic.
"Goodness…" Papyrus panted from beside Sans. The eldest brother looked on in mild concern, releasing his magic to kneel beside Papyrus.
"You okay Paps?"
"Yes Sans," Papyrus panted as he struggled to get to his feet. "Wowie… Miss Angel is really hard to defeat!"
Rolling my eyes, I waved off Sans so he'd stop holding down my sister so I could assist her to stand. "Sorry Papy, but that how strong you'd be if you spent your younger years doing what I had to do."
"Oh?" Papyrus climbed to his feet while the brothers looked at me strangely. "What things would those be?"
Feeling my magic calm down, I sighed brushed the snow off my sister while she pouted at me. "Things… I'd rather not talk about."
Awkward silence came over us for a few moments as the brothers both watched me with careful eye lights. I could feel their stares and feel the heavy atmosphere on my soul, even as they tried not to be.
I felt Frisk yank on my hair and I yelped in pain. Turning on her quickly, she raced away from me, a devious look on her face.
"Come on, Angel! I'm hungry!"
And just like that, the tension was broken. I bit the inside of my cheek as I refused to talk, but followed my eager sister.
She really was the best sister…
"Come on! Come on! Come on!" Rounding the house, my sister eagerly grabbed my wrist before she narrowed her eyes at the skeletons. I took her hand quickly into my own to keep her from running off. "Teleport, damn it!"
"Frisk!"
Well, even if she was the best in my eyes, she wasn't winning any awards for that attitude…
Shrinking under my gaze, she calmed down only slightly, though she did still try to escape the hold I had on her once her hand was in mine.
"Alright, alright." Sans shoved his hands in his pockets, casually he walked toward us. Only when he didn't hear his brother behind him did he turn back. "Come on Pap, the tiny terror might just take and eat your arm if ya don't."
An exaggerated gasp escaped the younger of the brothers. "Little Frisk! You wouldn't dare!"
"Nom, nom, nom…" Playfully biting at the air and trying to escape the hold I had on her, Frisk dived at Papyrus. A girlish scream escaped the male and he dove behind his brother, pouting at my sister.
"Enough Frisk, or no dessert."
"NO!"
She begged. She literally begged on her hands and knees for me not to do it. I couldn't take her seriously in those moments as I almost wanted to retract my earlier comment about her. I should have known better.
And yet… I couldn't help but struggle to not giggle at her actions. She was so dramatic…
Like Dad when he wanted to be…
"Jeeze Kiddo, quite the dramatics today." Sans stood next to me, grabbing both myself and Papyrus in that moment before teleporting us all down the street, too lazy to walk. "What's the occasion?"
"Because I feel like it!" Dramatically striking a pose, Frisk peaked her eyes out from behind her messy hair before her stomach growled loudly. Her head fell, even as her body remained in the same position. "…And I'm really hungry…"
"Then let's get you some food." A quick pat to her shoulder had Frisk moving inside the establishment while Sans and Papyrus following after. I could quickly see the scowl forming from the younger skeleton as he was led inside to Grillby's diner. It was no unknown fact that he preferred to eat our homemade food rather than anything at Grillby's due to the grease levels of the fire man's diner. Papyrus was always more of a health nut then he let on at times with spaghetti being one of his favorite foods.
Upon entering the establishment, a calm atmosphere seemed to greet us. Grillby maned the bar as per usual while his wife and daughter seemed to filter between the tables. It was a lighter night; most of the normal patrons were on patrol or taking a vacation to be with their families. I knew that Dogamy and Dogaressa were celebrating a long vacation as a newlywed couple all the way up until the new year.
We took our normal seat toward the back, Sans' favorite booth that was still within joking distance of Grillby himself. Frisk and Sans climbed inside so Papyrus and I could have the ends. The poor younger skeleton's long legs didn't work with the booth tables. The bar would have been more appropriate for him, but Papyrus will put up with just about anything to be with family.
"Hi!" Young Fuku quickly made her way to us.
"Hello there, Little Fuku." Papyrus smiled down at her, leaning closer to the table to be more eye level with the soon to be six year old. "How are you tonight?"
"Good!" Fuku gave him a toothy grin before holding up her little pad of paper with pencil in hand. "Drinks?"
"I will have a milk, please."
"Coke!"
"Ketchup."
"And I'll have a cherry soda."
"Okay!" Fuku carefully wrote our drinks down before hurrying up to the counter to her father and have him make. While the little one was gone and we giggled at her cuteness, said little girl's mother approached us next.
"Ah, good evening to all of you." Sarada carefully set her hand upon Papyrus' shoulder as she greeted us. "How are you all?"
"Well Sara, we just got done training for the day. Frisk won the little game earlier this week and got to choose going out for dinner."
"Well it's still wonderful to see you all regardless." Sarada approached me before she kneeled by my ear. "And Angel? You don't happen to have that painting… do you?"
"Oh shoot!" My hand flew to my mouth as I nearly swore. I quickly turned to my older roommate paired beside me. "Sans, can you-"
A flash a blue caught my eye before I could finish the sentence. Sans was gone, faded from sight.
"Wowie! I've never seen Sans move so fast!" Papyrus had to look at the spot his brother sat in moments prior and blink his eye lights. Once, twice, three times did he do it to see if his brother had really gone before I'd finished my sentence.
That was not normal for the lazy skeleton.
He had to of had a hidden agenda.
"Heh." Another flash of blue had us shield our eyes before Sans returned with the frame in hand, careful not to touch the piece I'd made. The blue glow that came from Sans filtered around us, some of the glow shining against my skin after the small workout we'd done earlier with magic training. "Don't be so blue about it, Precious."
"SANS!" Papyrus was quick to snarl while a snicker escaped from the other patrons of the establishment. "I should have known it was all for a stupid PUN!"
"Here you go, Sara." Sans handed over the frame without any hesitation. It was supposed to be a surprise for Grillby, so it was requested that the final product be covered in cloth to hide the contents.
"Oh, thank you!" Sarada eagerly snuck a peak before doing the most childish thing I'd ever seen her do in my short time of knowing her. She squealed.
And that got the attention of her husband and daughter.
"Sara?" Grillby carefully walked over from the bar to meet his wife. "You're excited."
"Yes, I am. And I hope you will be too." Sarada was quick to grab a stand to set the painting against before she glanced at me. "Angel, you painted this for us. Would you do the honors and reveal it to us?"
"Really?" The swell of emotion in my chest was intense as I felt such happiness and honor from the request. "Are you sure?"
"Please." Sarada pulled me from my seat and had Grillby take it. She waved Fuku over for a moment and set her on her father's lap. Sarada hung over the seat of the both to watch as I stood next to the frame.
"Okay, then. Grillby, Fuku, this picture painting is a gift from your wife and mother to you."
Away went the tarp and the beautiful painting sat before us.
In the middle of the dimly lit restaurant stood the family on the canvas. Grillby was to the right. One arm wrapped around his wife while the other held his daughter. She sat right on his forearm and seemed to be reaching over slightly to the blanket that Sarada seemed to be holding within her arms.
A blue blanket with a bright infant hand just barely reaching out.
The jaw of the fire monster dropped before he glanced over at his wife in absolute astonishment. She giggled back at him, pleasantly thrilled to see his reaction on his normally stoic face. Fuku, on the other hand, looked a bit confused as she stared at the painting I'd made.
"What is it, Daddy? What's wrong?"
"Not wrong, Sweetheart, but what's 'right'." Her mother rubbed her head softly before pointing gently to the blanket in the picture. "This is why Mommy has been so sick lately, I have a baby in my tummy."
"A baby?!" The squeals filled the restaurant while Fuku stepped down from her father's lap to jump at her mother's feet. "Is it a little brother or a little sister?"
"The blanket color tells you." Sarada turned her daughter around to face the panting again before looking at her husband's still stunned face. "You'll be having Grillby the forth very shortly."
"Oh it's a boy?!" Papyrus and Frisk squealed from their seats. The tavern quickly erupted in excited chaos for the family. I was exciting to see everyone so happy at the news.
I couldn't help but sneak a peek at Sans who still hid in the back corner. His sockets seemed so wide as he looked at the painting. I was surprised to see my friend with such a look upon him. That look… how to place it? Sans' face didn't give nearly away as much emotion as his soul did. Astonishment was the main one I was feeling from him without probing with my own soul. But there was something else he seemed to be feeling, a longing of some sort… I could almost see it on his boney brow.
What was that feeling? What was he thinking? Sans had Papyrus, and he also had us living with him as well. His life was quite adventurous with three others to keep him entertained, yet it seemed he desired something else. Sans never was very forward about his feelings or desires.
Would he answer me if I asked him though? Most likely not…
"Eh?" I was brought back from my innermost thoughts as I felt someone poke me on my forehead. Glancing, I saw Sans had reached over the backseat of the booth to stab me with his pointer phalange. He didn't have that look on his face anymore and I couldn't feel the surprise in his soul anymore, it was covered up by humor, though I could still feel a bit of that longing.
"Ice of ya to join us, Precious." Sans seemed to almost giggle at his pun. "Penny for yer thoughts?"
"What were you thinking of when you saw the painting?"
"Meh… thin's."
I blinked at him. "What things?"
A thin finger pressed against the front of his teeth. "Secret thin's."
I pouted at him. "Fine, don't tell me. But don't expect me to tell you anything, Darling."
Sans merely rolled his eye lights.
And that's when things changed…
I only had a moment to glance back at the front door while we all were celebrating over Grillby and Sarada's second child to see a bulky figure entire the restaurant. Low and behold, it was Robert all by himself, no wife or children with him as I'd seen most other times before. It was actually almost strange to see him without her, most likely because she knew how he got if he was left to his own devices for too long of time.
I tensed at the sight of him, which was not lost to Sans who was still watching me in those moment. Following the direction of my eyes, he saw the bear as well and I felt boiling anger in his soul he tried to hide behind a poker face of a grin.
This wasn't going to end well…
Before Robert got any closer, I made sure to walk away from my table. I didn't want him to yell at Papyrus again, I knew how much that had destroyed the younger skeleton the last time it happened. I wasn't looking forward again for a repeat. I quickly realized the bear was following me as I moved away, going for the isolated bathrooms Grillby kept down the hallway and away from patrons.
Once I was out of eyesight from the happy atmosphere of the celebration, I turned to see Robert gunning for me. The rage in his eyes, ones that looked so similar to his daughter's honey colored ones, was so fiery I could imagine a blaze growing behind them. His lips curled back into a snarl, though he kept from lashing out in the first few moments.
Perhaps his wife had spoken to him? It wouldn't surprise me since I knew Maria wanted me to help out with the fair. She wanted my assistance with baking for the many people they were expecting and had no help for then. I mean, I saw her going door to door asking if people would contribute at least one thing to make up for the fact that there was no baker who was able to cook for the fair. She avoided our house, obviously.
Yet it seemed like Robert was here to either start a fight or try again to convince me again…
"Can I help you, Robert?"
He didn't respond at first, as if I was supposed to read the glare he was sporting me. For a few moments, he seemed keen with just doing that. I stood and waited for him to speak, yet he didn't. I wasn't sure what he was trying to convey besides his hatred for me not assisting in the fair. He didn't speak, either lost for words or hoping that his looks and occasional grunting would be enough to convey his feelings.
"Robert? Can I help you?"
Again, I was met with silence.
A sigh escaped me and I began then to turn away from him. "If you'll excuse me then, I need to return to my friends and family."
Just as I moved to pass him, his paw with claws extended clam slashing down at me. My magic lit up and I felt red overtake my vision as my chain stabbed the wall, wrapped around my body and yanked me back. Robert's attack missed as it landed into the wooden boards of the wall from where I'd tried to pass. The most inhuman roar came from him; I couldn't prevent the shiver at his defining cry.
He dove down his head then and charged. I sucked in a breath before falling backward, allowing my chains to yank me through his widely spread legs before he crashed into the wall. Robert shook the entire building in his rage as he tried to attack me. Quickly scrambling to my feet, I stepped back away from him while the bear struggled to remove his head from the wall.
"Angel?!" A flash of blue and Sans appeared before me, arm raised to provide some sort of barrier between me and Robert. His hand glowed as well as his single right eye. We watched and waited for a few moments as Robert struggled to free himself. When the older bear couldn't, Sans released some of the tension in his shoulders. "Ya okay?"
"He wasn't able to hurt me Sans, I'm okay." I laid my hands on his shoulder, trying to convey any form of comfort as I could. Sans' glowing eye glanced over at me, glancing over my form for any cuts of bruises from the raging bear. "Really, I'm okay. I didn't let him hurt me."
"Miss Angel?" I glanced around to where I'd come from to see Papyrus' worried face. "Is everything alright?"
"No Papyrus, please go back and be with Frisk."
Papyrus glanced over at the situation we were in the middle of. When he saw the towering form of the bear that scared him, Papyrus went pale and quickly turned on heel. Papyrus didn't return after that, to which I was grateful.
Robert then managed to finally pull himself from the wall, though not without help. Sans used his magic to coat the older male's soul and yank him out, holding the bear in the air as he gathered his breath. I only started to get concerned when Sans refused to let him down.
"Well, that wasn't very nice of you, Robert." Sans only spoke after he saw the eyes of the male open and watch him. "S'not nice. Ya heard Angel the last time she told ya she wasn't helpin' with the fair until you apologize ta Pap. That ain't changin'. Ya got a problem with it?"
"…Bitch."
I brushed off the insult without a moment's hesitation, though I felt Sans tense under my fingers. It seemed that my boney friend wasn't pleased with the comment.
Robert's body was slammed backward into the wall he'd been stuck in moments prior and I squealed in shock. I saw Sans' hand clenching, watching in bewilderment as my friend applied an extreme amount of pressure onto Robert's soul… threatening to crush it under his magical strength… Robert tried to cry out, but he was so overcome by pain that hardly a squeak escaped him.
Sans normally was so cool, but his temper was fast reaching its point.
"You wanna have a bad time?"
"Sans, please! Enough!"
I didn't even think. I tried to grab his hand. One of mine ended up around his wrist, the other arm held him back by his ribs. One of the bones I held between my fingers at the top of his clavicle. My friend stumbled a bit under the weight I put on him, but Sans still held strong, though I could feel his gaze on me. He glanced at me with his empty socket before I just barely saw the edge of his glowing single right eye.
"Please Sans, don't hurt him anymore. He might be a miserable old bastard, but I think he's learned his lesson." I kept my grip strong, even as Sans tried to test it. "I'm not forgoing my promise. He's not getting what he wanted, so just… please… no more…"
I couldn't bear the thought of Sans harming anyone, I didn't want him to hold that over himself in case he did go too far. Papyrus was just in the other room… I knew he didn't want his younger brother to see him like that.
I had to stop him, by any means necessary…
"Think of Papyrus!" My voice was hushed, a whisper in the darkened hallway as I danced around my friend, standing before him. I released him long enough to force his skull to focus only on myself, holding it in my direction. Sans attempted to look around me to Robert, but I wouldn't let him, shifting my body into his way. "No, don't look at him. Focus on me. You don't want Papyrus to see you like this. Sans, think about that for a moment."
The mention of his brother had him falter. I knew Sans didn't want his brother to see him in a light that made Papyrus scared of him. It was one thing to be lazy, it was another thing to be villain. Sans' glowing eye faltered, and I watched it slowly fade, the glow on his hand simmered away before I felt my friend fall toward me.
I raced to catch him, though I didn't need to. His skull fell onto my chest while he stood there, leaning on me and fully letting Robert go. I flinched as the body hit the floor while Sans stood there a moment, seemingly gathering his breath before I felt his arms holding me, even so gently, as if afraid to touch me.
"…Sorry…"
"Don't be, I'm glad for the help. Just… I didn't want you to go too far."
Normally I'd be so embarrassed. I'd never let anyone this close to me besides Frisk for so many years, even the through of letting a man touch me like this brought a roaring blush to my face. And oh, I still was. The blood pumping through me made me so hot I wanted to walk outside without any of my winter gear.
I always seemed to find myself in some sort of embarrassing predicament when Sans and I were left to our own devices…
While Sans sorted himself out, I called for assistance from the bar owners to escort Robert out of their facility. With the very thing that caused our anger gone, Sans composed himself better until I saw a worn grin on his face. Very easily was I able to tell he was putting on a front, even as he tried to hide it.
"Thanks Precious."
"I told you, didn't I? I won't break my promise to you Sans. No matter what."
