Two Worlds, Two Souls

Chapter 38: Helping Friends

Angel's Point of View:

Before this stressful situation had begun, Sans had shown me where another skeleton ran a boat for travel between the four districts of the underground. Those that mostly used his services were up in Hotland or the capital, but a few boats made their way out here. I saw alone on the large vessel with only the heavily cloth covered skeleton driver by the name of Algerian. He was a skeleton like the brothers, though covered in cloth much like myself to hide his appearance.

I was on my way back to Waterfall to where Undyne's home had been. With the guidance (and protection) of Papyrus, he had showed us where the woman had lived in a quiet neighborhood to the north of town. She had a few neighbors, living in the area just outside of the snail farm run by the ghost families.

I knew roughly where to travel once I got off the ferry.

The caverns were warm once I left Snowdin, though the coolness had actually kept my anxiety at bay. I was very worried for Sans, a very close friend of mine that I thought I knew so well until our disagreement the night before. He completely shut me out the night before, so I left my sister behind while he slept in the house, though I could feel he wasn't sleeping well. Whether it was due to my interference the night prior or not, I wasn't aware.

But perhaps Papyrus did.

Ever since Sans started to act strangely, Papyrus has been brushing off actions that normally would irritate him beyond comprehension. Watching them interact over the last few days, Papyrus seemed to show a patience that was of a saint. Our cinnamon bun of a skeleton also seemed to age with wisdom and grace in these moments, being softer on Sans then I'd ever seen him act before.

Even Frisk had noted his strange behavior…

Landing in Waterfall, I was the only passenger as Algerian halted the boat. I unloaded and many people piled on right after me. Before I was lost to a sea of people, I waved out to the quiet skeleton.

"Thanks for the ride, Al!"

I got a simple wave back before I saw his magical energy used to move the boat. Quickly did I see it depart to Hotland while I hurried along into the square before taking the correct path to Undyne's (only needing to consult the map I had on hand once which made me quite proud.)

Walking to the end of the neighborhood that Undyne lived in, her house was easy enough to find no matter where you stood in the streets. Undyne's house was at the top of the hill… and it looked like a fish's head.

I kid you not.

The woman had interesting taste. Her house was dome shaped, seemingly made from metal rather than wood or brick as I was used to seeing. The rounded fish head had metal scallops that decorated the outside to make it look more like fish scales. The two front windows were shaped as if they were angry eyes, and the front door appeared as if it were teeth that could chop you in two, if not careful.

I knew that was not the case, Undyne had invited us in the last time we were here and her door was very normal in its movements, it just looked very unusual.

Walking up the stone pathway that led to her front door, I could see already the battle going on between Papyrus and Undyne in training on her rare day off. They seemed to be having a blast, Papyrus doing his best to keep up with the captain and Undyne thrilled to be facing a somewhat strong opponent. Spears were flying and bones were chopping up the ground. It was a wonder that Undyne had any money left over with all the things she constantly had to fix… let alone her actual bills.

"Ravie! Heads up!" I glanced upward just in the nick of time to see a knocked back spear heading straight for me. Sidestepping away, the spear landed only a few inches beside me, the impact making my cloak rustle from the force. I chuckled at the two of them and waved before I opened the iron gate that led onto the woman's property.

"Oh, good dodging there, Miss Ravie!" Papyrus cheered from his spot. "We were not expecting you! Have you come to join us?"

"Perhaps I might for a little bit, but I'll have to home soon to make sure Frisk isn't causing too much trouble for Sans in my absence." I chuckled at the two of them before nodding to Undyne. "Good day, Captain. I hope I'm not intruding."

"Course not, ya punk!" Undyne and Papyrus quickly approached. I saw the woman reach to grab me for a noogie, however, her hand fell short for only a moment, and it turned into a pat on my shoulder instead. After our talk nearly a week ago in Waterfall's square, Undyne had been more careful with my sister and I, unsure if our 'scars' hurt us if touched. She opted instead for a spot she'd touched before, since Undyne was a physical person. She communicated more through action then words.

To make up for not nooging me, she went after the poor skeleton beside us instead with a hearty laugh.

"Don't noogie the skeleton!"

Undyne released him and Papyrus flew back into the training dummy beside them in his rush to escape. Undyne hardly payed any mind before focusing back on me. "But anyway, what's going on, Ravie?"

"I actually came to talk to Papy for a second about Sans." I looked over to the younger skeleton who dusted himself off and stepped back over, no wounds on his form. "I don't know if I've forgotten something or if I've done something wrong, but Sans hasn't been sleeping well. I've been noticing it the past few days and it concerns me and Sitka. He's barely ever awake and I've noticed that you've been brushing off his unusual habits a bit more than normal during this last week."

Papyrus went quiet; that was my first indication that something was very wrong…

Undyne seemed to notice it to, so she hesitated for a moment before she tried to pat his shoulder and get his attention. However, even her persistent smacks did nothing to lift the skeleton's spirits.

Papyrus then looked to the earthy ground below us, that was my second worry and fear piled in my gut.

"Sans… doesn't like talking about it…" Those were the first words that came from his mouth after a long period of silence. "I suppose we never gave you a clear answer, but two days ago was the day that Father passed about… eleven years ago."

I failed to hold back the gasp at those words.

"Shit, it's that time of year already?" Undyne hissed out before she patted her friend's shoulder. "I'm sorry Pap."

"It's alright, though Sans still struggles with it to this day." Papyrus shook his head, looking to his scarf, feeling its textures between his gloved fingers before he spoke again. "Sans… he was very bright when he was young. A genius in all matters of the word. I looked up to him so much as he told me incredible things that I couldn't even fathom. At the early age of fifteen, he already had his doctorate in multiple science categories. He was selected by our father and the king to be one of the assistants that worked in the core to keep the underground running, as well as working with the souls we had captured in hopes of finding a way to escape. He and one other, a good family friend named Alphys, were chosen and were there on the day where the lab was destroyed by the very core they developed."

Papyrus had a very far off look to his sockets while Undyne and I listened to him carefully, not willing to interrupt him while we waited to hear more.

"From Alphys, I heard later on that a soul had gotten loose in the lab and in turn struck the sensitive core, which caused it to meltdown. It created a… I believe she called it a miniature black hole, which sucked up many of the other scientist into it in a fury of chaotic energy. Our father had been bravely trying to save as many of his fellow scientists in the process, though he used up all of his magic during those moments and was dragged to the monstrosity. Sans attempted to use his magic to save our father. However, he had been too petrified at the time, and he could not teleport to our father or he would have accidently dragged Alphys with him and sacrificed her instead to save him."

The fins on the sides of Undyne's head fell limp at the story. "Pap…"

"This was all told me second hand of course. Sans refused to talk about the event, but once Alphys had recovered and the core restored a couple of years later, she explained the story to me. She returned to the labs after the magical energy had dispersed and eagerly helped the few remaining scientists to rebuild the core and became head scientist, while Sans… never truly got over the events… I still remember when he came home late that night, I was staying with Grillby and Sara, they were dating at the time and had just taken over the bar. Sans was… lost, and very hurt. He couldn't speak when he first got back, and only hugged me. It was later that the king came to our home to check on Sans and explained to me what had truly happened, as best he could to a seven-year-old of course."

"Oh my God…" I covered my mouth in fear that I'd shriek from how sorrowful I felt in those moments. "Papyrus… I'm so sorry…"

"Yes… as you can see, Sans no longer was that bright individual, at least not in the emotional sense. The king gave him a very long personal leave and assisted with our bills for the first few months until Sans could pull himself together enough that he could adopt me, with special permission from the king and others checking in so often and such. Sans refused to go back to the labs after that, and took on many other jobs to keep us afloat in my younger years. I always felt terrible that he gave up on his love for science, yet… every now and then I see him go into the basement where much of Father's personal experiment that he brought home from work were set up. Sans had been working with them every now and then, more so since you came to live with us, Miss Ravie." Papyrus looked at me with grateful eye sockets, orange tears leaking out of them in his wake. "Your influence had greatly helped him improve, and it gives me great hope that perhaps my brother will overcome this someday and perhaps go back to his original ways. Granted, I know his laziness will never leave, he was like that before the events as well, but… it would be nice if he was… less so."

"Well, that explains exactly what I needed to know." Crossing the few feet of distance between us, I rushed into Papyrus' arms. "Thank you for telling me this Papy."

"Of course… I'm sorry we've kept it from you for so long." I felt the boney arms hold me back just as tightly. "You're our family, Miss Ravie."

"Well, if I'm family, then you don't need to keep calling me 'miss'."

Papyrus pulled back then, still holding me in his long arms as he looked down at me. His face held a curiously worried look as he tried to guess the face I was giving him.

"Perhaps I could call you something else?"

"Such as?"

"You've… always felt like a sister to me… could I call you Sister?"

The joy that swelled in my chest I couldn't contained as a breathy squeal escaped me… "I'd be honored if you did, Papy."

"Alright, I'm getting sick of all this mushiness!" Undyne seemed to have finally had enough and a brightly colored spear appeared into her hands. "It's cool and all that you made up, but I'm itching to fight! Let me face you for a bit, Ravie!"

A spar with the fish woman wouldn't be the most terrible thing that I could think of. As long as I watched where she tried to hit and I stayed covered, I would be fine. And anything to cement my relationship with her better before revealing my human side would be benefiting.

And a spar actually sounded somewhat… thrilling…

"I suppose a bit of sparing wouldn't hurt. However…" I felt my lips turn upwards into a grin from under my hood as my magic activated and grabbed Undyne's ankle, yanking her into the air where she gapped at me from the ground. "You'd best not go easy on me, regardless of what we've talked about before."

"Hell yeah!" Undyne struggled for only a moment before she snapped the single chain around her ankle and fell to the ground. Papyrus stepped back from me and watched from a distance. "Let's go Ravie! Bring it!

"Good luck, Undyne! Good luck, Sister!"

I couldn't help the pride that swelled in my chest at Papyrus' words. Eager to show off a little and make him proud, chains quickly pulled from my body to guard and swing at Undyne in a calculated attack.

But soon the pride and happiness would fade. I still had a skeleton back at the house I needed to try my best to help, and I finally understood enough that I knew what to do.

Later That Night:

It was the next night when Sans had another nightmare. I had dared to stay up and be prepared for him. I didn't know if and when Sans would be afflicted by the nightmares, but after talking to Papyrus earlier that day, it made all the more sense now.

Those nightmares that plagued Sans' mind were painting him as a terrible son, one that perhaps couldn't help his father in his time of need and lead to his demise in the core. It deeply rattled Sans and left him scarred. It actually surprised me that he was still doing so well after the trauma that he went through. He's had to face it all on his own while raising Papyrus. That certainly didn't spell out well for them.

When I felt the jolt of Sans coming out of his nightmare again, I cautiously waited until I felt his soul teleport to the first floor to the kitchen again. Sans and I had hardly spoken since I saw him the night before with his first nightmare and he had snapped at me. I knew he didn't mean it, and he had been pretty upset from what Papyrus had said. I just hoped that what I planned to do would work.

I slowly crept up to the kitchen and again saw Sans getting ready to make coffee to try and keep himself awake. A heavy groan escaped him as he mulled around for the supplies.

"Sans?" He flinched at my voice, even as I spoke ever so quietly.

"Angel, we gotta stop meetin' like this." I could hear him chuckle from where he stood, but it wasn't the same like when he normally was trying to make others laugh.

"Sans…" I hesitated over my words before I slowly tried to approach him. "I'm sorry…"

That made his eye sockets widen in surprise.

"Sorry?" He repeated after me before his face frowned, or as best he could as a skeleton. "Ya have nothin' ta be sorry for. This is all on me."
"I still shouldn't have pushed you." I shook my head at him, holding onto myself as I thought back to the bloody memories in my own mind. "I know just how hard it is to talk about those kinds of things that haunt us… I barely tell Frisk anything if I can avoid it… let alone anyone else…"

Seeing me stand there like that caused Sans' gaze to soften. "Awe Angel… look… I'm sorry for last night… it just left a bitter taste in m'mouth."

A heated breath left me, reminding of just how emotional we'd gotten the night before and how I was turning now. The emotions were too fresh, and my need to hold him was too great.

Before Sans knew what was happening, I dug my heels into the chilly floor and grabbed a hold of him, clinging his body tightly too me. Sans stumbled with me holding him so tightly and preventing him from being able to move freely. We hit the counter, both of us bruising our hips in the process before Sans lost his footing and we both fell to the ground. Before any noise could come of our fall, Sans teleported us into his room and we landed on his bed. He let out a loud 'oof' like sound when we landed and I continued to stay latched onto him.

"Angel?" Sans' bewilderment held strong in his voice while I held to him, sniveling like a child.

I refused to answer. All I did was hold him tighter; so much that I possibly could have bruised or broken his fragile bones. Even as I knew that, I didn't dare let go.

I just wanted him to know that I was there.

"Damn it, Angel…" I heard him whisper to me. I buried my face into the side of his neckbone and soon felt tears landing on my cheek. "I'm sorry…"

I heard it then, the break in his voice to show his emotions coming through. A sob escaped him, Sans shook under my arms and quickly then gripped my back, latching on with nearly as much strength I was using on him.

He cried then, even if he wasn't ready to tell me what was bothering him. I was there for him like I wanted and felt I needed to be. His soul always drew me in so close that to be away or for him to be mad at me left such a terrible ache. I could only assume he felt the same way as we cried together on each other in his room, falling asleep eventually in each other arms.

I breathed in deeply the smell of his jacket while we clung to each other and cried. He more so as he tried to keep his sobbing to a hushed sounds as to not wake the others. The smell of the cinnamon body wash he'd used still lingered on his bones and clothes drew me into him, if that was even more possible. The smell brought back more wonderful memories of the man who I associated that smell with beforehand and brought me at ease as Sans and I quieted down.

The older skeleton brother wore himself out with his hushed sobbing while we held each other and drifted off into an exhausted slumber. I didn't dare leave him and just curled on top of him, sharing the warmth of my body. Curling my fingers into the fluffy edges of his jacket, we both fell to a deep slumber that both of us most certainly needed.

The Next Morning:

"Brother!" The voice of Papyrus caused us to stir in our sleep. "Are you up yet? Is Angel up there with you?"

I barely noticed that I was holding Sans still ever so closely as I had the night before. During the evening hours, I had climbed on top of him and had him partly covered by my own body. My nose was tucked up under his chin and I felt him barely move under me. I lifted my eyes enough just to look at his peaceful face before succumbing to my own desire to sleep some more.

"Sans!"

A loud pounding at the door made us both jump and Sans was quick to cover his eye sockets while he groaned lightly. It was still dark in his room with the light off and nothing would have made me happier to sleep another couple of hours. I could feel Sans' boney fingers moving at the base of my back. He never had let go of me in the night, just… relaxed his grip.

"That's it!" Papyrus' shrill like voice caused us both to try and hide under the blankets for any protection against the sound before the door of Sans' room burst open and bright light flooded in. Before we could adjust, Papyrus turned on the lights to Sans' room and blinded us.

"Turn off that light Papyrus!" The holler that came from the skeleton I was currently lying with was booming, one that caused the younger skeleton to jump and leap at his older brother's demand. Once the light was off, Sans let out a deep sigh. I could barely see his hand covering his eye sockets from where I hid in his shoulder.

"Sans?" From behind Papyrus stood my sister, who cautiously stepped up to us. "Oh Angel! You are here!"

"Sorry…" I mumbled out of the side of Sans shoulder and rolled over to touch her face lightly.

"Brother, Angel, why are you sleeping together?" Papyrus questioned us as we lay still on the bed, reluctant to get up. Sans and I still felt so tired, I would have happily turned over and gone back to sleep in a heartbeat.

However, Sans was waking up. The comment his brother said quickly caused a rich blue blush in his cheeks from his magic. "W-what?!"

Normally I'd chuckle at this, but I was still so tired, and Sans would be found out if we weren't careful. I carefully leaned up a bit to make Papyrus focus on me, as well as the others.

"Nightmare…" I slowly turned to face Frisk since I knew she wouldn't question me about the dark thoughts that sometimes haunted me. "Sans was awake to help me…"

"You had one of your nightmares, Sis?" Frisk's face quickly grew soft; she knew just how bad those dreams were that plagued my mind. "Are you okay?"

"Sans helped me…" I curled back on top of the skeleton. I didn't think he could produce heat, but he did as his blush got more intense in his cheek bones. "Sleep… tired…"

"What time is it anyway?" Sans questions his brother but looked beyond him to see what his nightstand digital clock stated. "Four-thirty in the mornin'?! What the hell Pap!"

"Well… it's time to get up and patrol…?" Papyrus questioned softly. "And Frisk was worriedly looking for her sister…"

"Oh really…" The deadpan look on Sans was from the lack of sleep that I knew he needed from how exhausted we were.

I tugged on Sans' jacket then, pulling him back into the sheets with me, trying to give off the best fearful look I could while tired. "Stay… don't go…"

Sans I knew didn't want Papyrus to know about the nightmares, and if it wasn't for the fact that Frisk slept next to me all the time, I would have kept them from her as well if could have.

"Angel…?" Sans questioned me as I tried to pull him back down into the sheets.

"Papy, let's go." I could barely see out of the corner of my eye that Frisk was pulling on his arm.

"But…"

"Now, Papyrus." My sister's demand left little room to argue as Papyrus quickly fell into line behind her and left, my sister only turning to give me a much softer smile. "Sleep well Sis."

She closed the door then and left us in the dark then. Sans laid back down, but glanced at me as I tried to hide under his chin and fall back to slumber.

"Why'd you do that?"

"Hm?" I tiredly looked up to the now awake skeleton who I was sleeping on top of. "What?"

"Ya lied ta them and said it was ya who had the nightmare, not me." Sans repeated with a few more details. "Why?"

I sat up a bit off of him so I could try to face him, even thought my exhaustion. "Frisk knows about my nightmares, had a few before. You didn't want them to know 'bout yours."

Sans narrowed his eye sockets at me. "Ya have nightmares? About what?"

I meekly shook my head at him, neither ready, nor awake enough to talk to him about that. Sans understood the look I gave him and reached behind my head to pull me back to down nestle into his shoulder. His arm wrapped around my back, holding me to him while he stared at the ceiling of his room. I curled into him again and quickly the tiredness overcame me, bringing me back into the darkness of content sleep that I'd been rudely woken from.

"Not tonight I guess…"

Sans reached past us both to pull the blanket back over us. Once we were covered, I felt his second hand gently weave his fingers thought my own on his ribs. His first hand landed back over the curve of my side.

"Night Precious…"

"Night… Darling…"

Later That Morning:

"Why do we always end up like this…?"

Feeling movement on my side, I blinked my eyes awake. Sleep quickly left me with the room being bright and much later in the morning then the early shift Papyrus tried to get us up for. Leaning up on my elbow, Sans appeared in my vision first from where I was nestled into. I remembered vaguely that I'd fallen asleep on top of him, though the normal unsettled feeling in my gut wasn't there that time around. Sure, I was still embarrassed, but that had happened to me too many times for me to care much that point in the morning.

"Good morning." I yawned and sat back, allowing him a chance to sit up once I was no longer leaning on him. "Sleep well?"

"Better than I have in a while…" Sans seemed reluctant to admit that, though he appeared well rested enough, save for the blue hue that coated his cheekbones in embarrassment. "Ya?"

"Like a baby." I stretched my limbs, feeling them pop under the strain before I crossed my legs and faced him. "You… holding up okay?"

"Meh… no different than normal 'round this time of year." Sans shrugged, though he didn't look as worn as he'd been before. "Sorry… for all that I did to ya."

"It's okay. If it had been the other way around, I probably would have done the same thing."

It turned quiet for a few moments after that. Neither of us knew what to tell or say to the others as we struggled with what happened the night before. Both of us stayed silent, looking at any of the items or pieces around Sans' room rather than each other in those moments. My embarrassment decided then to adorn my cheeks in red as I woke, but not nearly as dreadful as usual.

I suppose I was getting used to it.

"Oh!" Sans jumped at my sudden exclamation and I jumped from the bed. "Wait here, I have something for you."

"Wait, Angel-"

But I was already gone.

Slipping into my room, I grabbed the small gift I'd wrapped up for Sans in a box that was about the size of my lap. Hurrying downstairs as well, I passed my sister who seemed to be contently doing her homework.

I had to stop for a moment to make sure I wasn't dreaming…

Frisk didn't even notice me as she attempted to read ahead on material I was going to go over with her the next day. Today I had given off to her for the specialness of it, but it appeared that the reality shock of finding me in Sans bed due to a nightmare must have weighed down on her.

Poor thing… I'd have to talk to her later.

I quickly grabbed the object of desire, lighting a candle on top of the small pastry I'd grabbed and hurried back up the stairs. Sans was not a large fan of sweets, though the sweets I made with lemon flavoring or peanut butter seemed to be his favorites when I did make something along those lines.

The yellow cupcake in my hands I held steady, while his wrapped gift box was under my arm. I hurried back into his room and his sockets widened.

"Wha-"

"Happy birthday, Sans."

The surprised skeleton looked at me for a few moments longer before he pulled out his phone to check the date. January twelfth read on his phone and he chuckled lightly at the thought.

He turned off the phone. "Damn… and here I was thinkin' I could skip m'birthday."

"Not a fat chance in hell." I carefully released the wrapped box from my arm to land next to me and held out the cupcake for him. "Make a wish and blow out the candle."

A snort escaped him. "Isn't twenty-six years old a bit much for makin' wishes?"

"Nope, so make a wish, and hopefully it will come true."

Sans stared at me for a few moments longer before he reached out for the treat. His phalanges laced over mine, holding our hands steady before a quick breath of air came from between his teeth and the candle's light was subdued. A light trail of smoke was left in its wake and Sans pulled the candle from its perch to lick the bottom of it.

"Hm… lemon."

"It's one of the only sweets I've noticed you enjoy. You're not much of a fan of the traditional vanilla, chocolate or strawberry."

Sans paused for a moment, looking me over. "Ya really noticed that much?"

Carefully setting the sweet treat into his phalanges, I settled to look straight at his eye lights. "No differently than you."

Sans didn't remark much at that while I reached then to the side and pulled him his gift. Sans quickly ate the treat before I held the present before him. "Papyrus and Frisk have their own gifts for you later. They were going to give you them when they saw you up today."

Sans' sockets looked away from me. "Ya didn't have to get me anythin'."

Reached forward, I patted his cheekbone to get his attention, where he looked back to me, startled. A light hue of blue on his bones still while red was on my skin. "I wanted to. We all did. We wanted you to know just how much we loved and appreciated you."

"Heh…" Sans chuckled lightly, but I could see the shaking in his figure. I wasn't sure if it was scaring him, making him happy, or a combination. But he didn't push me away, and that's what made me happy. "Thanks."

My roommate opened the gift before him, carefully seeing the box under the cool blue wrapping paper. Upon opening it, a soft pair of blue slippers seemed to rest inside, his favorite color. They were soft and would likely come up to his ankles. Perhaps a bit more girly in design, what with the little poms of fluff hanging off the front of the laces, but Sans didn't care as long as they were comfortable.

My friend quickly threw his old sockets and slippers off before trying on the new ones. Entirely encased in softness, Sans relaxed into the new shoes with a content sign.

"Now these are fluffy slippers." The other slipper was eagerly put on his foot. He wiggled it around before turning his head back to me. "Thanks, Precious."

"You're welcome, Darling. I hope you enjoy them." It made me smile as I looked over to him, seeing him enjoy the gift I'd gotten him.

Sans laid back out on the bed with his new slippers and scooted over, then patting the empty space next to him. "Come here, Precious. Plenty of space to laze away the day."

"I suppose a bit wouldn't hurt." Sliding down beside him, I laid out on the bed with him. At least with it being with us both awake, it was unlikely we could get into a strange situation.

"So… my bro told ya about what happened?"

I ducked my head at his comment. "I'm sorry, but I didn't want to pressure you."

"It's cool, just not something I enjoy talking about." Sans hesitated for a moment before I saw his teeth move again. "If it means anything, I kinda pried on ya when Frisk and I were alone back when ya were sick. She didn't tell me much, or didn't know much, but she… admitted that ya did something bad ta keep her safe."

I sucked in a breath. I sat upwards very quickly and stared at him for a few moments, shocked that he knew that. I tried so hard to keep what I'd done tight lipped… yet it seemed my sister knew more than I hoped she had…

I turned away, a guilty feeling settling in my gut. I wasn't ready for him to know that… "I don't want to talk about it, not now."

"We don't have ta. It's cool." Sans quickly sat up with me, hands in a peaceful position. He tried to reach out, but his hand fell short, stopping just a few inches away from my own. I took a moment to breathe before I took it from him and played with his phalanges between my fingers. My own terrible habit coming through as I attempted to calm myself. "Sorry."

"Look at us… all we've done is apologize to each other." I sighed and set our hands in my lap, not ready to let go. "We both know we went through some terrible shit, but we shouldn't let it drag us down. I know we're not ready to talk about it yet… but… I'd like to know that you'd be willing to listen in when I am."

The look on his face then, he tried to show me a smile, but it was forced. This was hard for both of us. To understand each other's pain and to not ask, it was difficult. We were trying to respect one another. Perhaps one day we would be ready to admit what we did or didn't do, but not on that day.

"It's a promise, Precious."
