Two Worlds, Two Souls
Chapter 40: The First Hours
Angel's Point of View:
"What in the underground could be keeping my brother for so long?!"
Papyrus was infuriated when he and my sister came back from the store and found that Sans had not yet returned with our food at the late hour of nine. The taller skeleton huffed and stomped his feet, angrily hurrying upstairs to change his clothes. While Undyne had taken the night off and wasn't due in until the morning, Vinnie, who had been working tonight had asked Papyrus if he'd be willing to take on an extra shift for someone who was on paternal leave. Our friend had quickly agreed, eager for his food and then to take off to Waterfall.
"It is strange for him to be out so late." I hummed, slightly worried at the turn of events. Sans was forgetful, but not to the point of ignoring the previous five calls we've left for him.
"He is probably passed out at Grillby's. Granted it does seem strange… he hasn't done this sort of behavior since before you and Little Frisk had come to live with us." Papyrus groaned while he down the stairs, pulling on his armor as quickly as he could. "I shall go fetch him on my way into work…"
"I can do it Papy." I lightly tapped his shoulder to force the younger skeleton to focus in on me rather than his chaotic mind. "Go ahead and head out. I'll bring by your food to your station once I get a hold of it."
"Oh, thank you Angel! That would be most helpful for the Great Papyrus!"
"Of course, I'll head over to Grillby's once I get Frisk to bed, its been a long day and she's tired."
"I understand, I shall meet you in Waterfall then! Nye heh!"
With a grin on his face, the younger skeleton took off out the front door toward the back cavern in Snowdin that led to the next town people lived in. With Papyrus out of sight, I tried to collect my thoughts and breath. It wasn't easy with the situation that had come upon us.
Sans had been late, and a few minutes is normal for him to piss off Papyrus just a tad, or to come up with a great pun upon arrival. However, how could I explain the extra hour wait?
I couldn't help but feel absolutely worried at this. That wasn't like Sans.
The first thing I needed to do was make sure Frisk was settled.
The last thing I wanted was to worry her as well. She had headed up to bed a while ago, after sneaking a few snacks form the cupboard when she thought I wasn't looking. Although, I knew she was hungry. Poor girl had such a fast metabolism that she couldn't help it. It would hold her over until otherwise.
Quietly making my way up the stairs, I cracked the door open to my room to see Frisk already asleep in bed. She faced me and the ease in her face showed me how she was already resting. She groaned as the light brightened the front of her face. Not wanting to wake her, I quickly tuned off the light outside the room and hurried off.
I hoped she wouldn't wake while I was gone…
With Frisk sleeping soundly, I quickly wrapped myself up in my cloak in case Grillby had some of his unusual clients from out of town for the nightly rush. The place was quiet busy most nights as well as it was a brisker night then normal in the town of Snowdin. I was thankful the cloak had some other enchantments on it that provided warmth.
I quickly locked up the house behind me and began the trek of heading the couple of blocks to the west to reach our fiery friend. Carefully I walked the sidewalks covered in the powdery snow that fell only a day or so ago. I watched for the glint of ice, as Snowdin had a rare warm day just before the snow fell and crafted plenty of ice on the sidewalks, making normal passage difficult. My magic was constantly working at keeping me upright every time my foot hit a slippery.
I tried to keep myself distracted, but the negative thoughts going on in my brain just wouldn't stop. Sans never acted like this. Had one of us angered him? Had we forced him to leave? He didn't seem distressed before he offered to get food. In fact, he had been calm like always, even my magic could pick up on that.
My hand slipped into my pocket, grabbing the small phone that Toriel had given me nearly a year ago. I was so tempted to call and find his whereabouts.
But would it be okay?
Having never run into this situation before with my friend, I was hesitant on what to do. I treasured Sans no differently than Papyrus or Frisk, and I had to be honest with myself. If any of the younger ones were missing for this length of time, I would be just as worried, though more authoritative and taking action.
But Sans was different…
I swallowed down any hesitance I had in my gut and pulled out my phone dialing my friend. It rang… and rang…
And rang…
"Heya, it's Sans." The prerecorded voice paused for a particular noisy yawn to come from his vocals. "Leave a message."
"Hey… it's me. Is everything okay? You've… never been this late home before." The lump in my throat caused me to hesitate with my next words. "Call me back, okay?"
I flipped the phone shut.
That practically non-existent phone call took up the remaining seconds that led me to the front door of Grillby's establishment. It seemed the fireman was cleaning up his bar when I entered and Sara was vacant from sight, most likely to rest with her being pregnant and all.
The male looked up and I could see the slight surprise in his flaming brow as he saw me standing there.
"Angel? Is everything alright?" The rag was set down from his hand while he motioned me to the counter.
"Grillby, have you seen Sans?" Carefully looking over his bar I saw that my lazy friend was nowhere to be seen. "He was supposed to come here a couple hours ago and order food, then bring it home. We can't seem to reach him and its unlike him to be unreachable for over an hour or so, especially this late…"
"Sans did not go home?"
And the dreadful feeling in my gut intensified.
"What do you mean?"
"Sans was over here earlier tonight. Getting drunk on ketchup and annoying me with bad puns, I'd yelled at him to leave when he'd pushed me too far." The bar man came around his counter to show me the spot where he was sitting. "As Sans was leaving an hour ago, another patron had a begun to choke and he was there to catch them as they fell. Friends of the patron arrived then and were able to resuscitate him and hurry him along to a hospital. Sans at that point had grabbed his food and left, I assumed he had headed home."
I lowered my head at the knowledge. He did leave on time, so what happened between then and now? Where was he? Where was his phone?
Grillby gave me a look. "He has not?"
"He never came home. I've tried calling him… but I've gotten no answer..."
"That is not good…" Grillby raised a flaming hand of his to his chin. "That isn't like Sans… and you've had no contact with him in the last hour?"
"None… I just tried calling him on my way here. He didn't pick up."
"… Sans hasn't spent many nights away from the house since his father passed. And it's incredibly rare when he does… nothing seemed out of place when he left…" Grillby sighed and pulled out a phone from his pocket. "Allow me to call around and see what I can find, Angel. Sans wouldn't have just taken off without a reason. Would you like me to remake the food for you and your family?"
"It's so late Grillby, you don't have to. You'll be closing soon, and Frisk is already asleep and Papyrus picked up a shift." I shook my head, trying to keep my breathing under control from the worry that kept building in my chest. "I'll make something quick at home for Papyrus and take it up for him. Let's reconvene in the morning and maybe do breakfast together instead, okay?"
"Of course." Without another word, Grillby dove into the back room with his phone in hand, going about calling others who may have seen sightings of Sans before.
With my mission complete, I turned to leave the restaurant. I let out a heated breath as I stepped out into the frigid air and felt the tears leaking down my cheeks, freezing in their wake.
How was I going to tell Papyrus?
No… don't think like that. We don't know yet. Give Grillby a bit of time…
Third Person Point of View (With Grillby):
Grillby watched from the back room as Angel left quickly from his restaurant. From through the door of his kitchen, the peep hole provided him a clear view of his empty dining room.
He knew better, he should have stopped his friend back them.
All the pieces were coming together, but of course it was not the way that Grillby or the others wanted. A dear friend of theirs got wrapped up into a mess they hadn't signed up for. Seeing Angel just shy of crying put a greater concern in his flaming gut then he would have liked.
He wished he could have told Angel the truth. About those shady characters that took the patron away and how Sans hadn't been normal after touching the patron. His sockets had turned dark, and a slightly different shade of colored light emerged from his sockets, looking more like eyes and being more lavender in color.
He also hated that he wasn't able to tell her about how Sans had purposefully dropped his phone on the floor where he'd sat before heading out, not even offering a goodbye to any of his friends.
And that's what hurt Grillby the most, his friend had been possessed by another ill intending monster and he hadn't done anything.
It was in those moments that Grillby sighed and looked at the phone in his hand, calling a contact he had listed as 'Sir.'
"King Asgore won't like this development…"
Third Person Point of View (With Sans):
A cackle escaped the boney figure that sat in the dimly lit room. Before them was a large bag of money that they were currently stuffing with more gold coins. Multiple bags sat in wait of being removed from the location while two other figures scattered about the room.
Two other monsters who were quiet vast in size, one large and muscular, the other slim and quick. They scurried around the room to gather all they could while the third monster stuff the bags as quickly as he could.
"Sly, this vault is done!" The smaller monster hissed out a whisper.
"I'm done with this one." The larger monster noted before they congregated toward the center of the room with their companion, the monster named Sly.
"Good, stuff the bags while I plan our escape."
Sly allowed a moment to let his companions pack the bags while he in turn looked over himself. The jester that he'd taken control of was very misleading. A powerful bastard under all the laziness and knowledge to fill three libraries full of the underground or more. It was insane how much Sly was learning from this fellow, whether it be escape routes, places where the royal guard and other high up members would travel to or not, to secretive information.
Sly had hit a honey hole when he'd managed to capture Judge Sans Gaster in his grasp.
Angel's Point of View (The Next Morning):
What was I going to do? I had to tell Papyrus…
I had remained up all night in wait of Sans coming home, calling him every so many half hours to see if I could reach him, but never did his phone ring, it went straight to voicemail. I couldn't reach him…
I had lied to Papyrus somewhat when I'd seen him many hours ago. At ten at night I had traveled to Waterfall to pass off some dinner for him to eat since our food never made it home to us. Papyrus only scoffed when I told him Sans wasn't home yet, but that he would be soon enough. The younger brother seemed to hardly pay mind to that and went about his work as I left, though happy with food in his non-visible belly.
I doubt he would feel the same way once he was home…
My head fell into my hands while I sat on the couch and waited. I had been like that much of the night, doing small tasks while keeping an eye out of the skeleton. I had once tried to go to bed with Frisk many hours ago, though sleep never came to me with the worry in my gut, so I had forgone it and worked on a few of my paintings.
Some of which were a bit more intimidating in nature.
One of them had been luminescent sea dragon that was swimming just under the surface of the water that someone could barely make out, approaching the land where someone's figure stood, watching though the evening light that if they journeyed into the water, they would be finished.
Another was a beast coated in lava in the midst of an active volcano, someone could barely make out the eyes and shape as the dragon climbed the volcano's edge to approach the heavily clothed explorer who stood at the top of a mountain.
A third included a young child who seemed to be walking home from school under the light of day, though lurking in the shadows of the forest seemed to be a hidden monster. Only glowing eyes that reflected the light of the setting sun could be seen beyond the lush green landscape while the child did not noticed them.
Many others that I had lined up along the walls that I had completed in the night with no sleep and dread just sitting in my gut that it was all I could paint. Terrible situations that showed off my innermost turmoil of death and suffering around a corner if you just saw it. My clientele I doubt would want paintings like those…
My wrist had hurt from all the strokes I had done in the night, so I had let it rest with some ice while I saw to make breakfast, which I just finished ten minutes ago. Though I wasn't hungry. I sought to do something different before my hand would take up a brush again to relieve myself of all my frustrations.
"I'm home!" The front door quickly slammed open and in walked Papyrus. The bright gleam in his step as he came home, though he quickly covered his mouth, most likely remembering my sister would most likely still be asleep. His boots he pulled off by the door and he held his bag of dishes from the meal I made him last night in his hands.
Yet Papyrus saw how quiet the house was, and his gaze quickly filtered over to me while I watched him, hunched over with tear stains down the side of my face and ice on my wrist to sooth it, healing magic I couldn't seem to perform under the stress.
"Oh Angel! Are you alright?" Papyrus quickly strode over to me and set about healing my wrist. "What happened?"
"Papyrus…" my free hand rose to wipe away any fresh tears that threatened to fall. "I'm sorry…"
That caused the taller skeleton to pause. "Sorry?"
"Sans never came home last night… I've been waiting all night for him." I couldn't bear to look at Papyrus' face. "I've tried calling him all night, I went and talked to Grillby… no one's seen him since he left the restaurant last night and I can't reach him. His phone is instantly going to voicemail…"
"But…!" I felt Papyrus move then and I glanced up to see him as he fretted in the living room. Quickly did he begin to pace and out came his phone where I was sure he was checking to see if his brother called or if he could reach him. I watched the younger brother quickly dial the older one and waited.
"Brother… where are you?" The sob that came from Papyrus was sorrowful. Glowing tears of tangerine glittered down his face as he heard the pre-recorded message on his brother's line. "I'm sorry… I shouldn't have been so mean to you…"
I couldn't move from my spot, feeling too ashamed that I wasn't able to do more.
"He can't be far!" In his rush to throw his work containers into the kitchen and pull back on his boots, Papyrus dropped his phone to the floor and rushed right back out the door. "I'll go look for him!"
"Papyrus!" I leapt to my feet, finally feeling the ability to move as I attempted to stop him.
"What the hell is going on?" I glanced back to see my sister poked her head out of our room with very tired eyes that she was rubbing.
I would ignore her swear that time due to the situation.
"Frisk, get your coat and boots on!" I hurled the items at my sister and she yelped in surprise. "We have to go after Papyrus! It's an emergency! I'll fill you in on the way!"
"What?!" Frisk had just yanked on her boots and was pulling on her coat when I summoned my chains to grab her. She screeched in surprise at the forcefulness of my behavior and I flung us out the front door. "Sis?!"
Using my magic, I threw us up into the air to find Papyrus. He wasn't far, only just down the street and approaching Grillby's. I flung us after him, knowing that this wasn't going to go well…
I would need to call Undyne and report that…
Witch's Note:
WHAT THE HECK?!
Okay so we have a lot to digest from this chapter, so let's start with perhaps the fact Sans has been possessed by someone?! How?! Isn't that impossible?
And secondly, Grillby seems to have some sort of connect with the king of monsters, Asgore Dreemurr himself! Oh boy are we getting into some kind of mess!
Now onto our reviewers!
RoseCentury: Alright then Rose, you really should try your best for that Hon. Just where I and Mystic Girl live alone has been down right brutal these last few days where it's been hotter then the all the hells combined. And I just started my new job where I'm outside doing tree work myself. And it's been terrible. Keep lots of water nearby, have good snacks and try to stay cool when you can.
ShunGod: Okay, I have to ask. Why the hell are you using a TV remote to type? Typing your messages to us? How the heck does that work? But lovely to see you again ShunGod, even if Mystic Girl is still sour over everything…
(My best friend is pouting off in the distance.) At least I know about Robert getting-
Nah ah ah! (She howls in pain at my pinching her cheeks.) No sneaking hints to the readers! Bad Mystic Girl!
(She snarls.) Bite me, Halloween!
(I roll my eyes…)
Not A Shy Guy: Why hello! Its lovely to meet you! And you left us such a long review! Oh, Mystic Girl and I love to hear comments and words just like you were kind enough to leave us! And yes! I always wanted to try a new type of magic for Frisk to use that would make more sense to fit her determination, and chains just seemed to work so well! I can't wait for you to see how power the girls are in the future!
Also, don't you dare worry about enjoying these comments. I have to be honest; Mystic Girl and I love them ourselves which is why we love when people review. Its our way of communication besides messenger. I don't know if you saw in earlier messages, but I'm the only one on FanFiction. Mystic Girl is not. You're more then welcome to chat with us or leave reviews any time you want!
And for Robert's sake? The R.A.W.C. sounds perfect for him! We'll get him set up right away. Won't we Mystic Girl?
(Sadly, to my dismay the girl smirks very deviously.) Halloween, they don't know about-
No! (Again I use my hand to cover her mouth to stop her.) How many times do I have to tell you no secret sharing! Robert's fate is not to be known now! Its still too early. Will you stop this?
(She rolls her eyes before swaying back and forth, using a sing-song voice as she folder her hands behind her back.) But you love me!
(A deep painful groan left me.) I wonder sometimes…
And that's all for this time! But you guys better tune in for next time! Lots more is coming that we have to be on the lookout for! Especially since Judge Sans Gaster was kidnapped and is being used for stealing!
Love you all and see you next week! Please try and review! Mystic Girl and I love to hear from you!
