Two Worlds, Two Souls

Chapter 42: Oblivious is a Blessing

Angel's Point of View:

The light of the white crystals glowed through the infirmary room that Sans had been placed in once we arrived in the Capitol. He was resting in the bed while I sat beside him. A monitor was hooked up to his soul while he rested and an IV was also attached up to give him nutrition and fluids. Sans had been five days without any form of rest or food, he was truly on fumes….

Those assholes didn't give him anything, and the guy who possessed him didn't feel anything.

I'd never been to the Capitol, but it was a very… grey location other than the large gardens that were setup in designated areas for food. I constantly watched the herds of people down there as they matched around the streets outside of the castle we were in.

Yeah, I was in a damn castle.

As soon as I was able to get ahold of Undyne, she hurried with many members of the guard to help us. Medics were called to our locations and took Sans away, though Undyne sent me off with him while she grabbed those body snatchers and the money they had stored away in our location. She would ask me for a more detailed report later while I stayed with Sans.

Sans fell asleep as soon as the medics took us away. Without his ability to teleport, a wagon was used to transport us to the Capitol. We were placed inside the castle where the largest recovery wing was and a personal doctor to the king was in charge of Sans' recovery.

Apparently, they were good friends from what Undyne and the doctor quickly told me.

A yawn escaped me while I sat there by Sans' bedside. I'd been up for all the day before waiting if Sans would come home and stayed up all night with him. Sleep wasn't coming to me. Even if I was tired, my mind was wired. I couldn't seem to calm down enough to actually rest. Or it also could have been the fear of being discovered while I was here. I was in hot territory for a human who only had one friend there who knew about me and was out cold…

I'd neglected to tell the little ones just yet that I'd found him due to Sans' wish. Once he felt a bit better, or looked a bit more normal would I call Papyrus and Frisk, but not until. He was looking adequate with the treatment, but still was looking fairly worn. He didn't want to worry his brother any more than before.

A knock came to the door. I lifted my head just enough to allow them to come in. My eyes widened behind the hood of my cloak as I watched the king of the underground step into the room. Undyne had described him to me once as a softie, someone who wasn't a fan of fighting. However, he still was a bit bitter from losing his children nearly twenty years ago to humans.

The man before me actually reminded me a lot of Toriel. Reminding me of a goat like features, he was much more bulky, muscular and covered in armor with a violet cape wrapped around his shoulders. Golden hair and a beard were fitted through white fur that covered his body. Softer eyes of a strawberry color looked at me as I sat up a bit next to my friend. A tray of sorts seemed to be in his hands with a delicate china pot with little roses on it and the three cups on the tray.

"Howdy, you must be Ravie, right?"

I tried to appear calm as I stood nervously before him. "Yes sir. And you must be King Asgore?"

"Asgore is fine. There is no need to be formal among friends." The king filtered around the room before he gestured to a set of chairs and a table on the other side of Sans' room. "Would you like to have some tea with me while Sans rests?"

"Thank you." I carefully walked over to him and sat in the chair, glancing back at Sans for a moment to see him breathing easy before turning back to Asgore. "Perhaps this might help me sleep…"

"I'm sure you must be exhausted from worry, Undyne told me of how you, Papyrus and Sitka were looking Sans for the last week." Asgore gave a worried look as he took a pot and poured me a cup as well as himself. "How much sleep have you honestly had this last week, Ravie?"

"Honestly? If I told you any number of hours, I'd be lying…"

"I see, he truly worried you all. He had me worried as well."

"Papyrus was beside himself with worry. My sister and I could only do so much. Losing anyone hurts, and not knowing is almost as bad as when you find out…"

"Yes, I know that well." Asgore took a sip of the tea he poured himself before opening a container filled with sugar cubes. "Would you like any sugar? Milk?"

"Just two sugars please, I'm not a fan of milk in my tea." Asgore nodded and followed the couple of instructions I gave him. Once my tea was a tad sweeter, I took a sip, enjoying the floral taste. A flower tea of some sort? It had a bit of an orange-yellow tint, so it wasn't a dark leaf or dark flower.

"How is it?"

"Very rich, it also tastes fresh."

"Why thank you!" That brought a proud smile to his face. "These are fresh flowers from my garden. I tend to make my own tea."

I small smile escaped me, as well as the unease I was feeling before. "It's wonderful, thank you."

"I hope it eases you, I saw how nervous you were as you arrived, young Ravie. Your soul is very potent."

"…Sorry…"

"It's no trouble. I haven't seen anyone so concerned with young Sans for a while now, it's refreshing from how others normally treat him."

I blinked at him, even though I knew he wouldn't see it. "People don't treat him well?"

"Ah, that in itself is a difficult question to answer." The male hummed as he contemplated for a moment. "Tell me, do you know of Sans' past?"

"I know he lost his mother, my aunt, to illness after Papyrus was born, just before we lost our mother. Our uncle and his father was lost in a lab accident when he was a teen. I haven't asked for more details. If he wants to tell me, he can. If not, it's none of my business."

I had practiced this story with Sans a near hundred times with the younger ones. Papyrus seemed to be the only one who struggled with the cover story. We often had to remind him to call us his cousins rather than friends when we were out in public in places other than Snowdin. He told us just enough history about him and Papyrus to make it believable, though kept out a few details so I wouldn't appear as if I was lying if I knew more.

"That would be the most basic forms of it. Little do people know that Sans went through rough years and has… never really recovered after the loss of his parents. He suddenly had to become the caregiver for himself and Papyrus, suddenly had to take on bills and so many jobs. He worked as a scientist with his father back then, before the accident. It left him deeply hurt to watch his father die in the labs, and to watch his mother die at her bedside." Asgore paused for a moment before turning to look at Sans. Our skeletal friend didn't even move other than his breathing. "Sans changed from an excited young man into a depressed one who Papyrus became his only light to press on. Never has he really cared about too many others, even his old friend doctor Alphys who worked as his partner when his father lived."

Hearing all of this was making me a bit nervous again, but more along the lines of upset for Sans and what he went through. "But… he seems to care about Sitka and I, so he must have changed somewhat."

"Yes… he does seem to be a bit more alive now. I suppose it's due to the fact that you act a lot like his mother." Asgore held a furry hand to his chin. "From what I remember of her, he was very close to her. They loved to joke; he learned the basics from her. It devastated him, losing her, and he then grew attached to his father and brother. Sans never was very close to others, so to see him opening up to anyone makes me happy."

Hearing all of this made me feel closer to Sans as Asgore talked about him, however, I was a little… uneasy as to why I was being told that.

"As much as I love to hear this, why are you telling me this?"

"Allow me to pose you a question before I answer that." Taking another sip of his tea, Asgore seemed to mull a thought before he set it down and spoke. "What is your opinion of the underground?"

"As a whole?" Asgore nodded at me. "I've always thought it was such a beautiful place. The people that I know have always been kind. In fact… up until this, even with those body snatchers who used Sans for their own pleasures, I'd never met anyone so horrid and uncaring."

"And you're opinion of those men?"

"I'm cross with them. Furious even."

"And if you were in my position, what kind of punishment would you be giving them?"

I paused then, not sure of how to answer that in that moment. Asgore was asking me an incredible amount of heavier questions then I was expecting when I first saw him appear in the room. I could only assume he had another reason to ask these besides getting to know me as a person… did Sans perhaps know anything about what this man was doing?

"Those people, they deserve quite a bit of time behind bars for what they've done. They should be forced to do community service to learn the real value of hard work that they so quickly took from someone else, and learn just how much it stings."

Asgore pondered that. "You would not harm them?"

Shaking my head back, I stared down at my tea, unable to look at him. "As much grief as they've cause me, doing them physical harm won't help any. Making them learn from these more dramatic mistakes will. I don't like fighting. I avoid it all that I can. There are times where unfortunately we do have to use violence in certain situations, but I always believe that should be a last resort. Along with that, I believe that death is not a suitable punishment. Death is an easy way out instead of owning up to their actions… but I won't lie to myself and say that sometimes it's the only option."

I sucked in a breath trying to control my emotions after my long and winded response to his question. It left me remembering things that I preferred not to remember… with him-

"Ravie, have you ever hurt someone before?"

I glanced back at the king a bit more determined that time. "You'll have to be more specific. Of course, I've hurt others before. There's not a single person who I think hasn't. Even Papyrus has unintentionally hurt someone before."

"Yes, I suppose your right. My apologies." Asgore took a moment to think before he clarified the question. "Ravie, have you killed anyone before?"

I'm sure he knew my answer as soon as I turned my head from him, the hurt look in my hidden eyes as I tried to hide that truth.

"I see… Sans wasn't sure in the few times we'd talked of you if you had or not, the only hint he had was from your sister. Apparently, she had mentioned that you had done 'something bad' to protect her. And killing this person was that 'bad thing', correct?"

"…C-correct."

"May I ask how that came about?"

Shit… how was I gonna weave this one around?

I tried to take a calming breath while I figured out this part. Sans normally thought of everything, but even he had been unable to help me unless I revealed that to him. And to be perfectly honest, I really didn't want to. I didn't want Sans to think less of me for killing someone, even if it had been out of self-defense.

The deep guilt that I had killed someone still hurt to this day. The remorse, the regret… the painful knowledge that as much as I didn't want to do it, I had to. If I hadn't of… Frisk might not have been alive here with me.

Or even worse… I died instead and she would have been all on her own…

"Our- well… our uncle-"

"Wingdings?" Asgore asked quickly, as he tried to understand my scattered words.

"N-no… Dad's brother… not M-mom's… he… was our guardian after Mom died…"

"My apologies, continue."

"He… he wasn't- I… I had to pr-protect my sister… h-he hit… bottles all o-over the place…"

I hoped that Asgore was even partly getting the story I was trying to tell him. I'd hoped with how helpless I'd sounded then that I was even remotely believable. I didn't want to remember those memories. That day changed me, for the better or worse had yet to be seen.

"…I'm sorry you had to go through that," Asgore replied after a few beats of silence when I couldn't continue on in my vague story. "Were you young?"

"…f-fifteen."

"Damn…" The king cursed then, which startled me. His fist had come down on the table in his rage, which had promptly caused it to crush under his weighted hand. His china shattered and the tea we had been enjoying lost to the cobblestone floor. The actions caused me to squeal and leap out of the way, but also to alert our patient that he had company.

Sans rose with a startled yelp, quickly hissing and holding his side in pain as he held himself up with his other arm. With him awake, I hurried to himself, giving the king a moment to compose himself.

"Sans?!" When I approached his side, the first thing he tried to do was flash me a grin, thought it was heavily pained as he did so.

"Hey Rav, what'd I miss?"

"Ah Sans, sorry for rudely waking you up." The king quickly used his own cape to clean up the mess he'd made from the tea pot that spilled. "How are you feeling?"

"I'll feel better when I can go home and rest in m'own bed, but thanks for the room anyway, Fluffybuns."

I gaped at him, even if I'm sure the skeleton couldn't see him. I could only bet how he probably was seeing the dumbfounded look on my face while he flashed me one of his lazy grins. He seemed to pay the comment little worry as we both faced the king.

"Good, good. We'll get you home shortly Sans, you're looking a lot better than when Ravie brought you in with Undyne. We just have some short business to finish up before the two of you should head home."

"Eh?" Sans had to think a moment before he snapped his fingers. "Oh yeah, the test. How'd it go?"

"Your cousin here passed with flying colors. Though I've yet to ask her."

"Cool." Sans leaned back in his bed with a tired chuckle, one of his arms behind his head. The other would have been there too if it hadn't of been for the pain in his side still.

I looked between the two men in question. "What question? What test? What are you guys talking about?"

"Young Ravie, I'd like to ask you to be member of my jury."

Wh-

"Excuse me?" I couldn't help the surprised squeak that came out of myself.

"Part of the jury, Rav." Sans winked at me, lightly chuckling. "I told ya about it before. It's a group of monsters that rule over those that have done wrong. Once the royal guard catches 'em, we judge all their actions that they've done up 'til their caught. They're also measured with how likely they'd do the same stuff again."

"Sans is correct." Asgore agreed quickly. Setting his soiled cape to the side, he joined us at the bedside. "The members of the jury and the judge are constantly watching all people of the underground. Should a member notice a person a bit out of the normal sorts, the jury and judge are sent to covertly investigate and see what it is that they are doing and record their findings, reporting to the judge who would be a 'mutual' friend among them. Should anything be noticed that requires further investigation or the intrusion of the guard, it is done. If not, they are left alone, though are still monitored to deduce that they are not a threat."

I blinked at them, stunned by the events that were taking place and floored by the fact that I was being an offered a job by the king who had no idea that I was the very person he needed to be free along with his people. "And you want me to be one of these members?"

The king responded with a gentle nod to me. "Yes, you are already familiar with a couple members, and I plan to introduce you to those you don't know, should you take the position."

"Not to be rude… but if I don't?"

"Then that is your choice, though I would like to point out you would be paid daily for your services, since being a jury member is an all around the clock job. It would provide you with more money, besides those lovely paintings I'd seen you create of the surface world, the underground and its inhabitants."

More money wouldn't be too terrible… I could start setting up an account for Frisk and begin to give her an allowance when she does well with that kind of money flowing through. I could even pay Sans back, even if that damn skeleton wouldn't let me and seemed to be ahead no matter what I did…

A sudden realization hit me as I was thinking over the pros and cons of this development.

Sans was a member of them, those crooks had specifically called him the judge. His time spent lazing around the underground, taking on odd jobs that led him to different locations all the time… Sans was in public places where lots of people gathered. He often spent his time in popular places too, such as Grillby's, and it wouldn't surprise me if the quiet fire monster or his wife would also be a part of the jury as well. Hell, Sans even did standup comedy just outside the Capitol.

But that same pattered applied. He was only in public places, moving around and seeing people, watching them and judging them, keeping his eyes out on anyone who seemed strange… Perhaps he had a tip on one of the guys that he ran into at Grillby's and that's how he was grabbed nearly a week ago?

"Sans… you're the judge?"

"Yep, yer bone-afied boss-oww!" My friend hissed out at the pain in his side. "Granted… I'm more of a bone-afied mess right now."

"Should you agree, you would report to Sans and myself as often as you could." Asgore continued while watching our friend carefully, hovering slightly at his pain that I tried to sooth with healing magic. "Also, every month we have sessions where the jury and judge will gather to proclaim their findings if there is anyone we should be concerned for. More often than not, there is no one. This has been the most recent case we've had in the last couple of years."

I narrowed my eyes at him, though neither would see other than feel the tension in the air from my soul. "Would it remove me from my sister?"

Asgore quickly waved his hands in a calming gesture. "No, of course not. Sans has already expressed your fears of public school for your sister. I actually believe it would be easier for you to travel around with her at your side as you preform your duties."

"And I'm not engaging in any fighting?"

"Not normally, just observation. Though during the trial, you would be required to assist with keeping the accused bound during their judging. Your unusual skills and magic would be exceptionally helpful in that situation."

"I woulda normally never suggested you to Asgore with how you are, Rav," Sans stated carefully from the bed, relaxing a bit more after I'd healed him. "But I know you really needed the money, and you're better off then you were back when you first moved in last year."

"Hm..." I hummed to myself, not sure what to say in those moments while I debated the offer. From the display of emotions Sans was showing me, he thought that that was a good idea. I would have to talk it over with him more at a later moment, once he was better and things had settled.

Though it was a good job. Having a daily payment, even if I wasn't doing anything, would be helpful, especially if my paintings weren't selling during certain times of the year. It was a strange job, but I was sure that Sans would give me more details at a later moment.

"Well... I can't say no to more money and anything to help my sister and me. So, I guess I'm in."

"Splendid!" Asgore clapped his hands before him in his happiness. "Now with that information out of the way, I know Sans is eager to return home. He should not be using his magic much for the next few days as ordered by my doctor. Once Sans has recovered, Ravie, please do return. I will plan on officially introducing you in into the jury in about a week's time while we take a few days to allow Sans rest and to gather the others. You will most likely see the guard visit Snowdin for a few days as they return the money that was stolen."

"Of course. Sans and I will return then." I turned back to my friend. "Will you be okay if I carry you home? Since you aren't allowed to teleport?"

Sans looked at me tiredly, a yawn escaping him. "Ravie, I'm too bone-tired to care."

"Good, let's get you set up then so we can head home." The relieved smile on Sans' face was infectious as I returned the look under my hood, even if he couldn't see it. I helped him sit up, with Asgore's help. The doctor was called in momentarily to remove the bag of nutrients (long since drained) from Sans' soul before I sat on the bed to allow him to slide onto my back. I quickly grabbed his femurs to hold him up and invisible chains wrapped around him quickly to hold him to me.

Asgore assisted us to the door that led us out of the medical wing and began to walk us to the front of his castle. "Thank you for all your help Ravie, I hope the two of you will give me a call when you get home."

"We will Asgore." As I began to walk down the long corridor, I glanced to the skull lulling on my shoulder. "You doing okay, Sans?"

An indignant snore reached my ears, letting me know that Sans had already fallen asleep. I never thought I would be relieved to see Sans sleeping or hear him snore. However, just to have him back left me feeling filled to the brim with happiness and relief.

"I doubt he will wake the entire way home. Sans has been known to sleep much more often than other monsters to refurbish his magic." Asgore winked at me while we settled on the front steps of his castle, Sans easily sleeping away while I held him. "Don't let Sans fool you, teleporting as often as he does is a difficult and powerful magic, since you're shifting your entire body and everything on you to another location."

"He makes it look so effortless... yet nothing seems to really surprise me anymore with my cousin." Using my chains to help hold me and Sans up and not separate us, I removed one of my hands from holding Sans and held it for Asgore to shake. "Thank you so much."

"I should be thanking you, young Ravie." Asgore carefully shook my tiny hand in his before he looked about the path that led away from his castle and into the city. "Will the two of you be okay as you travel home?"

"Oh, don't worry about us." I carefully allow the chains on my body to become visible to the eye and Asgore saw just how many were wrapped around me and Sans to keep him secure. "I'll get us home safely. Sans I bet won't even wake. I've seen him sleep through worse with Papyrus then what I'm about to do."

"Oh?"Asgore looked at me in question. "And what do you plan to do?"

Without another word to the male, chains shot out up into the towers of his castle. Asgore watched in amazement as my chains wrapped around them quickly and yanked.

My feet left the ground and Sans and I were thrown into the air, though the entire take off hardly seemed to stir the skeleton on my shoulders with how securely I held him. It was the only part I was truly worried about as another set of chains shot out into the ceiling that was much closer to me now being in mid-air above the capitol. Sling-shooting us over the city, I watched the underground with a new vantage point as Sans and I quickly flew through their air.

It honestly felt like I was flying as I moved about. Even as I had no wings and was trapped under ground, the air above each section of the underground world was mine to enjoy as I glanced to every area, reminding me of what it was like to fly in a plane back when I was still above ground, my parents were alive…

I couldn't help the tears the escaped me as I remembered all the times that made me feel happiest…

The whipping air whistled as I soared through it. Though I could feel the different temperatures in the air as we moved from area to area. The capitol was temperate, Hotland was searing, but the blasting of air on my face made it more bearable from the lava craters below. Waterfall was humid, but much cooler than Hotland. Finally came the narrow pathway that led into Snowdin. Sans and I popped through the opening and shot out quickly before landing in the town's square. The look on those in the center square were all surprised as I held Sans, still sleeping soundly as I walked toward our home. It appeared quickly down the road with its glowing lights that Sans nor I had the heart to take down after the holidays were over. We left them up at the wishes of the younger ones and never had I been so happy to see them to light my way to the door just as the crystals in the sky brightened to show us it was day.

Using my chains to open the door, I hurried inside the house to warm us up a bit more. The snoring in my ear told me Sans hadn't been bothered at all during out travel as I hurried him up the stairs. Just as I made it to the older brother's door, I watched as Papyrus' door cracked open and there stood my sister, rubbing her eyes in their tiredness. She glanced at me, seeing the older bag of bones on my back and she gasped loudly, nearly waking up as she stood there. With a quick finger to my lips, I motioned her to be quiet and head down the stairs to meet me before hurrying inside of Sans' room and shutting the door.

Witch's Note:

Okay, WHAT? What the heck was that?!

Okay, let's all slow down a minute here and walk back through this. So, Sans turns out the be the judge as we all know. Cool? Cool. Next, we end up in the god damn castle! The worst place Angel could be if she's caught as a human! And then, she gets to talk to Asgore, the king of the monster kingdom and becomes one of the jury?!

That was a chapter if there ever was one…

I am so excited to hear what you guys have to say about this latest chapter! But for now, let's move onto the reviews!

ShunGod: I LOVE that you're calling her spider-Angel! That's so cute! Everyone seemed to really love the way her magic played out and there's still so much more to come! But now I have to slow you guys down before something bad happens to Sly and his partners…

(Off in the distance there is a combined army both from my best friend and this amazing reviewer that are tearing apart my home once more to find the current evil villains. With the assistance of the newly created R.A.W.C. they are currently keeping all fellow villains, both past and present hidden away.)

(Mystic Girl comes to stand before me, ShunGod at her side.) We will find him Halloween! You can't hide them forever! Give them up to justice!

(I roll my eyes at her.) You're not going to find them Mystic Girl. You're welcome to try as much as you want, but you'll fail just like you did last time.

(My long time best friend huffed before she led her group to tear up some other locations she things I hid everyone. I chuckled before giving a salute to members of the R.A.W.C. who hurried off to move our members once more.)

Not A Shy Guy: Oh my poor Shy Guy, I'm afraid this one already is, all ninety-two chapters of it. But… that doesn't mean I won't use ideas like this for perhaps other stories! And as for 'robbing you of that juicy lore'… you'll get to indulge, soon enough! And perhaps you didn't get your Undyne moment you were looking for, but hopefully what you did get made up for it! There will be more Undyne related content in the coming future!

Guest Reviewer: I KNOW right? Angel and Sans interactions are always so amazing! You'll be seeing more soon enough, both good and bad for the both of them. Their slow burn goes on for many chapters my friend! It takes them almost the entire story to reveal their love for each other! You're also going to be able to see more of her magic in later on chapters! But… no promises on updates sooner then Saturday. I do that so that I can keep writing the future content. The second story is being written and there is a planned… seventy-two chapters. And I've only gotten about thirteen written. I've got some work to do, so bear with us!

RoseCentury: Congratulations Rose! We're both so happy for you! Wish we could ask for a picture of the ring, but just describe it for us, would you mind? No matter what it looks like, I'm sure its lovely and your fiancé put a lot of thought into it!

Oh, my lord, I need a break after that one! It's a good thing that all of these chapters are pre-written! But you guys still have so much to look forward to! So much love! Heartache! Pain! Suffering! Oh, I can't wait until we get a bit further along! Some of the largest bits of character development that will be happening for some of our lovely characters will be happening between chapters forty-eight and sixty-one! No telling what's gonna happen yet! But its gonna be a doozy!

Love you all and see you next week!
