Two Worlds, Two Souls
Chapter 50: The Chase
Angel's Point of View (One Forty AM):
The grip on my sister's hand was so tight; I could feel the cold of the waterfall beside us more intensely then before. My knuckles I knew were white as I held such a death grip on her. Chains loosely floating around me in a protective coating to keep us safe.
Undyne had been the one to find us in the early hours of the morning, and that made me very, very afraid…
She knew we were humans...
But in those moments, that didn't matter.
Only escaping with my sister. That's what mattered most in those moments.
In the few seconds that I had before I knew Undyne would ready her spears again, I glanced around to see where we could find any cover or means of escape. Honestly, the only option I could see in the immediate area was to jump into the junk yard and hope for her to lose us during the fall.
Oh this was going to suck…
Diving my head down, I whipped the chains of my magic in the general area around Undyne to knock up some of the dirt from the path. She hollered out in frustration as her sight had been removed for a moment.
I only moments to act…
Grabbing my sister under my arm, I latched the second one over Frisk's mouth to keep her from screaming as I leapt over the edge and plummeted into the depths.
I felt her scream muffled by my hands as we landed into the junkyard below.
My chains launched then to surround my sister and I in a protective layer of metal as we hit a towering pile of trash. I felt something hit my back, though the protective coating dulled it. We rolled afterward, falling down the side of many tossed items that were no longer desired to useful in the human world above.
I heard my sister let out a squeak once we hit the bottom and we seemed to come to a stop. Unwinding the chains, I quickly glanced to see where we had fallen from. The drop had been so quick and deep that I honestly couldn't see the above area where Undyne had been only moments ago, only the endless pillars of discarded items that created this area.
Still though, I wasn't sure if Undyne could see me. I grabbed Frisk and dove behind a pile of garbage that kept us hidden from sight in most directions, waiting to hear any indication of Undyne following us, or knowing where we were.
My heart was pounding in my chest. It was so powerful; I could feel the echoes of it through my limbs. Everything felt cold and warm all at the same time…
I hated situations like those… where I was on the run and had to use my magic. I hated how easily I remembered this lifestyle sometimes, where I had to do just as drastic things to escape the law enforcement from the world above when they chased my sister and I.
Yet, there were moments where I was thankful I knew how to survive…
A loud cry in the air made me flinch and I felt my heart almost leap into my throat at the sound. Undyne's piercing cry echoed all over the area. But I didn't move. If I couldn't see her, the likely hood that she could see me was very slim.
So that's exactly what I did.
Holding as still as possible while still cradling Frisk in my arms, I nudged us deeper into the colossal pile of garbage behind us. Struggling to hide us from view, my chairs slithered around me carefully, just within a few feet of myself to see if we needed to run.
I prayed it was not that. We needed a moment to escape her.
We should have never left Snowdin…
Why was I so stupid?
Undyne's cry finally gave out after a long minute of listening to her annoyed rage. I could vaguely hear the stomping of her armor as she took off in another direction, most likely to try and trap us in this area. Glancing around the corner, I saw a blue glow off I the distance of the area up above where we'd been only a minute ago.
We didn't have much time with her looking away…
I glanced down to my sister, I could see the petrified look in her eyes that I wished I'd never brought on to her. I carefully removed my hand and hovered a finger over my lips, motioning her to stay silent.
My sister nodded at the gesture and we both stood. I carefully peaked around again, though a little braver then the time before. I couldn't hear Undyne's cry as I slowly stepped out, so I knew she wasn't watching for us at the moment, but working on whatever was causing that glow.
"Come on." My voice was soft and I tried to move the same way. My sister followed after me carefully, her hand back in mine as we moved from pile to pile of junk. Our footsteps were soft as we carefully moved, being ever so gentle as to not outright run to cause noise and bring our chaser right to us.
Thankfully the junkyard wasn't very large and my sister and I were able to make it to the edge of it where the stairs leading back up to the observation area was still unblocked. I carefully began our ascent back to the upper floors. It only took us a few minutes before I could see the top in sight, but the blue glow was very bright.
"Stay here." My sister paused and hovered close to the stairs in case we needed to flee quickly. I in turn carefully looked around the corner to see what it was that caused that glow.
Looking around the edges, I could see Undyne quickly. Her back was surprisingly turned to the stairs to where we'd fallen. I could she was hammering at something, and that something was whatever was the glowing color. I didn't dare get closer, only watched carefully to see the line of glowing blue large spears that went from the floor to the ceiling. They were so large, I couldn't imagine what magic Undyne was using to cut off our path.
And she was cutting off the path to Snowdin…
There was no way to go back without Sans' shortcut to bypass it…
We were so screwed if we couldn't get to Alphys'…
Undyne was taking extreme precautions to catch us…
While she was distracted for only a moment, I motioned to Frisk to follow after me. We only had seconds to hide before she could possibly turn back around. We still had to somehow escape Undyne, make it through the tunnels and the Eastern Botanical Gardens before we reached Hotland where Alphys was, in the middle to the College Plateaus.
We only had to get there. On a normal day… that would only take a good hour walk…
But with Undyne right on our tails…
I had to play it safe.
Just as soon as my sister and I were away from the stairs that were in Undyne's line of sight if she had turned around, I ducked Frisk and I behind some pillars before reaching next to me to grab a rock. With the smooth earth in my palm, I flung it from where we'd come from.
The clanging sound rang out over the loud roar of the waterfall and Undyne quickly turned.
The woman roared in charge as she jumped over to the stairs and I knew we only had precious seconds before she figured it out. With Frisk's hand still in my own, we dove to the path that would lead toward the gardens near us. The path actually there was covered with a tall grass that grew up to the ceiling.
I just hoped that us moving through the grass wouldn't alert her to our presence…
I pulled Frisk quickly along and we dived into the grass. My sister clung to me as quickly did the grass surround us on all sides and almost became disoriented. My only saving grace was the slim break in the grass that just showed me slivers of the area we'd just come from, the glowing of Undyne's spears that cut off our path back to Snowdin was daunting, even if we were over a hundred feet away.
"You damn humans!"
Undyne flew back up the stairs, still covered in her armor, though she had thrown her helmet off somewhere in her frustration of not capturing us. I could see the fury set into her features more clearly then I could with her bulky helmet on before. Undyne paced in the area, rapidly looking around and trying to figure out where we might have gone. Were we still down below? Had we managed to get past her?
Her head suddenly shot up and quickly did she look over at the grass we hid in. My sister and I had stilled, not daring to move or cause any noise, even as Undyne approached. I knew this tactic. She was going to try and startle us to reveal our location when she got it close enough. And even if she wasn't right on the money, she would get a general idea of where we were if either of us made a single sound.
Quickly, I whispered to my sister to close her eyes and cover her ears.
Out of both of us, she was the most likely to respond to one of those tactics that Undyne planned to use. Frisk was more expressive, no matter how she tried to hide it. And it was just something I had to deal with.
I just prayed that nothing bad happened, that Frisk could keep it up.
Undyne stood just before us, only two feet of grass between ourselves and her. I could make out the outline of her teeth and the literal glow of her golden eye. If either of us made a sound, we were as good as dead…
My heart just couldn't stop beating so loudly… it rang more in my ears then the near pure silence we were trying to archive. I held my breath, fearful that she may hear or smell it.
A shuffle of grass to my side startled me, though I didn't move. Before I could think any more on it, MK jumped from the grass and triumphantly stood before his favorite royal guard.
"Fight me Captain Undyne!" He puffed out his chest proudly before his idol. "I'm gonna be in the royal guard one day and be just like you! I wanna show you how strong I am! I've been practicing and everything!"
The little lizard kept trying to chat it up or get a reaction out of the fish woman. She merely watched him with a blank face for a few moments before she reached forward and grabbed him by the tied up knots in his shirt that I'd made for him. He dangled there like a toy, but never stopped talking to the woman.
Undyne glanced back at the grass another time. I had a feeling she knew that we were there, but her priority at the time was MK, not us. She stuffed him, still talking, under her arm before she turned around and walked back toward Snowdin. She ducked through the spears that she had placed up earlier as a barrier to keep us from going back. As she touched them, they turned red, becoming much brighter in color then before until she was no longer touching them.
So I was right, it would alert her if we had come too close…
There's still no way back, so we can only go forward…
MK paused in his words just then in order to look back at us. He stared intently at the grass for only a few moments before mouthing a single word to me.
Run.
As Undyne and MK turned a corner to head back into the tunnels to Waterfall Square, I grabbed my sister in a rush and threw her over my shoulder before taking off through the grass behind us and into the tunnels that led to the gardens. The tunnels would take us at least fifteen minutes to walk, it would allow us a chance to rest and catch our breath.
When we were further away from where we'd been before, I'd set down my sister on her feet. She quickly latched onto my hand as soon as her feet touched the ground and I was standing upright. Without a moment of hesitance, we hurried off toward Hotland.
"Did we lose her?"
I dared to look down at my nervous looking sister. She carefully looked up at me while we walked through the tunnels, abet at a fast pace to catch our breath.
"I think so." I sighed and took a moment to breathe deeply as we were finally save, even if only for the moment. "Thank God for MK. Undyne's more worried about getting him away from us then finding us at the moment. That will give us time to escape and rest."
It was in that moment that I could see my sister had out her phone with Sans' contact chosen that she was ringing. As I suspected however, he didn't pick up.
"Sis… I keep trying to call Papy and Sans, but neither of them are picky up…"
I petted her head, letting my fingers run over the fabric that protected her and kept her from visual sight of others. "I know… just… keep trying Frisk. We'll reach one of them soon enough. We can't go back, Undyne's cut off all entrances back to Snowdin, so without Sans' shortcuts, we're not going to go back."
"So… what now?"
"We get through the rest of these tunnels and get to Hotland before anything else bad happens."
Later that Morning (Two-Forty AM):
Frisk and I had carefully made our way around the tunnels that led to the gardens. We had taken a small five minute break where we'd found a little pouch of space to hide and rest, only to catch our breath before hurrying out again. We hadn't seen Unydne since we'd left her behind only half an hour ago when she escorted MK away from us. An attempt to keep him safe.
Too bad she didn't know he was on our side and helping us escape.
Frisk had been quiet during most of the walk. Granted, during moments like these when we had been on the run in the past, she always had been too quiet. I was never a fan of it. I hated when I couldn't see her smile or demand my praise with something she'd done or learned.
Only one other tunnel sat between us and the research facility inside the Botanical Gardens. It was a bridge that was propped up above a thirty foot fall into the river and was filled with pointed rocks that could impale. It was important to not loose balance there wine walk steady.
The bridge thankfully wasn't unsteady as we approached it. Frisk and I both got about five feet over the bridge before I heard the sound of running behind me.
"Go!" I quickly whispered to her. She hurried across and I was right on her heels just as I turned back to look.
It was MK.
"RUN!" He screamed out just as I saw Undyne right behind him, only thirty feet back.
"Go Frisk!" My sister leapt and made it to the other side, I was only a short distance behind her while MK was halfway across the bridge when Undyne made it to the bridge. The bridge however was unsteady then from all of us running over it, MK couldn't get his feet about him while Undyne stopped on the other side.
Shit! The bridge then went lopsided from the action and MK flew out to the right, over the rope railing.
"MK!"
Hundreds of chains surged from me then in order to save the little boy I'd come to care about. They raced from my body and down to him, wrapping around his body and preventing him from falling any further. MK shivered as he saw he was only inches away from one of the spiked rocks below.
I let out a shaky sigh when his decent had been stopped.
Undyne had frozen during those moments and constantly watched the many chains that prevented the young boy from being dropped into the spiked river below. Her face was stoic, unchanging as she watched both the boy and me carefully as I moved him.
I'd managed to pull MK from below the bridge and set him back over on the other side. He whipped his head back around to look at me, tears glistening from his eyes.
"Angel!"
I couldn't help but smile back at the boy who'd managed to escape from Undyne all to keep us safe.
"MK!" The boy paused to look up at me while I waved at him. "You've done more than I ever could have asked for. Be safe!"
My chains slammed down on the bridge then, slicing the ropes with incredible speed while the bridge that separated us was no more. The chains around me retreated back to my form. I skidded on my heels before taking off after my sister who was only ten feet ahead of me, and I quickly caught up with her before anything else could happen.
"You better come home!"
At MK shout, I saw him take off back into the caves to head back home, most likely to find his parents and siblings and warn them of what was happening.
The research center was just before us. We just had a short distance more to run-
"Raaagh!" At Undyne's cry I took a hot second to look back only to see her jump across the edge. My eyes widened and I hurried to catch up with my sister just as Undyne landed on the other side by the skin of her teeth.
What the hell is with this woman?! Doesn't she know when to quit?!
Undyne was honestly one of the most determined pursuers I'd ever run into in the last five years of my life. My normal tricks weren't about to work…
I'd have to try something new and more powerful if I wanted to shake her…
Witch's Note:
Okay! Shout out to the MVP of this chapter MK who kept the girls out of trouble! Awesome kid who did so much for his friends even at the cost of fighting against his idol! Oooo!
And now we get deeper into the chase and Undyne STILL hasn't let up yet! Oh, my lord, what are the girls gonna do? This is a serious case here! Something that is going to get much more dangerous! (Maniacal laughter can be heard from me.)
Mystic Girl: Would you quit it? Its creepy when you do that…
Me: Never!
And now let's chat it up with our reviewers:
Not A Shady Guy: Yeah, sure… quality time… We'll call it that. And wasn't MK just amazing in this chapter? I really loved being able to flesh out his adoration to protect his friends as well as stand up to his idol to protect Angel and Frisk! I'm also glad you liked the more action, less dialogue in this chapter! We'll have quite a bit of those moments for a while! Especially since the chase is not over yet!
(In the background of my office there sits the four major parties again at the negotiation table. The vice-president of the R.A.W.C has presented his letter to all parties. At this point, I give a pointed look to my best friend who sighs.)
Mystic Girl: Okay, so right now I'm shut down no different then any of us. Halloween basically is cutting me off from getting any new content that she's working on if I don't cut it out…
Me: Damn right, I am. Who agrees to kill a thousand people just to get a hold of four people that your pissed at?
Mystic Girl: Oh, shut up!
ShunGod: (With a steaming cup of lemon ginger tea in hand, I raise an eye brow.) What is there to lie about? If anyone blows anything up or kills anyone, story is permanently on hold. Isn't that right Mystic Girl?
Mystic Girl: (Walks up behind me.) ShunGod for right now we are not doing anything. There is nothing go on in background. There is no secrets between me and Halloween. And there are no plans to be executed until things calm down. Cuz we are on hold until the very pissed off Halloween Witch calms down so we don't lose our story. She's even threatening to take it away from me. And we don't want that, do we?
RoseCentury: My lord honey, you're on a roller-coaster of life alright! Anything me and Mystic Girl can help with?
Alright! That's it for this week! Who's looking forward to the next one!? I know I am, and it is a doozy! And the one after it is worse than that!
Love you all and see you next week! Please don't forget to comment on the crazy life that belongs to Angel and Frisk!
