Two Worlds, Two Souls
Chapter 53: No Longer Content
Frisk's Point of View:
What do I do? What do I do? What do I do? What do I do? What do I do? What do I do? What do I do? What do I do?
What do I fucken do?!
Sans and Papyrus weren't picking up. I could only guess that Papyrus had left his phone in another room. Sans'… I assumed was broken after the fight. I couldn't reach either of them and I had no way to help Angel without traversing on my own with no idea of what to do or where to go for help.
And who would help me? A human trapped in the underground, it was more likely that someone would come by and kill my sister to use her soul and keep me around just in case they needed another...
Why... why did those two idiots have to fight last night? Why did my sister want to leave and go to Alphys'...
Alphys! I could call her!
Quickly I grabbed my sister's phone who held more numbers then mine did. I found the contact quickly enough with how efficient my sister was and called the lizard woman. Once I selected her contact, I heard the phone ring. It rang once... twice... three times and so on. I worried more as the seconds carried on and no one picked up...
Please Alphys...
And suddenly, a click was heard through the phone...
"H-hello? Doctor Alphys s-speaking?"
"Al! Help!"
"Wha- F-frisk?" I could hear her moving things aside as she woke up from her slumber. "Wh-what's going o-on?"
"Angel and Sans got in a f-fight, so we t-traveled to stay with y-you for a while... but then we ran into Undyne..."
"O-oh no..." Alphys I could hear running about her lab, grabbing things and some items falling to hit the ground. "Are e-either of you hurt?"
"I'm not... b-but Angel…"
"O-oh dear…" Alphys hesitated for only a moment before I heard clanging in the background. "W-where are you, F-frisk? Can y-you see my l-lab from where you a-are?"
I took the briefest moments to look around the surrounding area for any sign of the doctor's laboratory. Being led their so many times, or playing outside when the heat level wasn't going to boil my skin off, I knew the strangely uniform building that Alphys resided in. The building's grey appearance I could remember quickly, especially as I looked around the molten area, shaded red.
Even from where I stood, seeing the building would be no easy feature. My sister and I have dived far off the normal path to avoid Undyne's wrath as she chased us through the entire area of Waterfall and part of Hotland. Currently I was surrounded by a set of tall pillars of rocks that shielded us from vision, but also prevented me from seeing anything. I would have to leave my sister behind for a few moments in order to see out behind the rocks.
"Just a sec!" I leapt from my spot, eager to get help as fast as I could for my sister. Though I was fearful to leave her for long.
I prayed Alphys would get here soon once I told her where I was…
A splash of grey coloring peaked into my vision and I gasped when the familiar building came into sight.
"I see it!" I felt such relief as I saw the building off in the distance, its rear left corner where the window was blocked up by a large cut out of Kissy Cutie that Alphys loved so much. "The back left corner! The one where you have a cut out blocking the window! I can see if just over the rocks!"
"Y-yes! I see you too!" Her words filled me such happiness as I saw the cut out be moved and she glanced out at me before taking off once more. "I h-have a cart t-to put her on! Stay with your sister! I-I'm coming around to g-get you as soon a-as I can!"
And that's when the line went dead.
Instantly, the fear and anguish filled my being. With my one ray of hope no longer on the line, I sunk to the ground beside Angel and watched her breathe. Her breathing was raspy, no doubt from the lack of blood in her system when she bled before burning her stump of an arm. The bleeding was a lot less after that. Then she laid there, still and unresponsive to all that I'd done.
I watched her, staring at her a very blank look. I was so… stunned, bewildered by what had happened that I wasn't even sure what to think or do anymore. My sister didn't have half of her arm anymore… I knew that would affect her a lot in the terms of doing things or just being herself. She'd have to rely on others a lot now unless Alphus was able to build her a new arm. Would it be hard? For any normal person, I bet they would have an easier time with it, but Angel was no normal person… working and keeping herself busy was what kept her happy. She'd be devastated once she woken…
God… why didn't I help her more! You idiot! You could have done more for her!
I felt my knuckles popping as I clenched my fists in anger. I didn't help my sister at all in those moments. Unable to do anything since all that I'd been concerned about during those moments when living with Papy and Sans had been to make up for all the years we'd been on the run. From the time I was eight to twelve, all I knew was how to stay hidden, how to blend in, how to run.
I didn't want to know anything else when we became free of that…
I wanted to be a child again, not entirely responsible for my actions, having Angel watch out for me, just having fun and stuffing my face full of amazing food and sweets. Anything else was something I wanted to put off. I didn't want to try new things, I just wanted to keep doing the things I knew and be content with what my life finally let me do.
But I knew then that I couldn't do that. The accident with my sister that left her without an arm made me very aware that I no longer could fool around. This was much bigger, and my sister and friends couldn't do this without me. I had to pull it together. I had to try harder. She nearly died because I wasn't strong enough or aware.
I couldn't be that way any longer…
"Frisk!"
I lifted my head then to see Alphys rushing around the corner with a large metal table she was pushing toward us. She stopped only a foot away from my sister before she rushed over to me. "A-are you alright? O-oh goodness… did you get hurt t-too?"
"N-no… I'm fine." A wetness appeared then against my hand. Carefully looking down at it, I saw it was a stray tear. I reached up to my eyes, not even noticing that I had been crying the entire time. "My sister-"
"Y-yes! We need t-to carefully lift her onto the ca-art and get her back to t-the lab w-where I can tend to her wounds." Alphys looked at me worried. "Can y-you do that? Like Angel could?"
Nodding to the woman, I lifted my hands. "I have to."
I'd struggled with my magic for so long, perhaps it was the very factor that I only just realized that was the reason why I couldn't do it?
With a new drive, a new desire and a determination flowing through me, I summoned the chains that wrapped around my body. They coated me, must like a second layer of skin, thick and dense to the harsh world around that would cause me harm. Carefully I struggled with the next part, pulling them away from my body. Always had I been frustrated with this part, barely able to do it to a single chain, let alone the two I would need to lift my sister safely onto the cart that Alphys had brought to us.
My sister had mentioned before that all I lacked was determination. She had been right, I had become complacent to acting like a child, no drive to move forward, and that was the only piece that kept my abilities and myself at bay.
With an ache in my heart as I realized all of this, I felt the chains pull away from me more easily than they ever had before (I was even able to do three!) My chains carefully supported my sister's limp body and laid her out on the metal cart. Once she was set there, I slowly approached, using my new found chains to wrap around the cart and keep her safely attached until we could get back to the lab.
"A-alright! Grab onto t-the cart!" I latched onto the side of it, hooking my feet around the edge. "Y-you just keep your s-sister safe; I-I'll get us back to the l-lab."
Before I knew what was happening, Alphys had pressed a button on the side of the cart that had us rushed back to the lab with what looked like rockets or something attached to the sides. I was amazed at her invention to rush us back with jets blasting us out of that crater we'd gotten stuck in. I shook my head at the amazed thoughts, the time to be enthusiastic was later.
My sister needed me then more than anything.
Within moments, we were rushed into the lab's front door. Just as always, it was only Alphys who had been here. Remints of her eating with someone else or just her lack of cleaning skills were apparent all over the monitor room where she conducted most of her studies. My sister had come over to clean the lab every so often for Alphys when it got a bit out of control because it had driven my sister mad when she saw the chaos of it.
The cart rushed us up to the second level. It paused for only a few moments while Alphys herself leaned over to allow a hidden panel in the wall to scan her eye and allow her access to a secret door, disguised as the wall. The cart pushed through the door and closed evenly behind us, everything becoming more automated and advanced compared to what Alphys had out in the normal area where we'd all gathered before.
Even I wasn't aware of this area of the lab, was my sister even?
"T-this is a s-secret area of my lab t-that only a few people know a-about." Alphys seemed to find some bravery in her voice as she spoke. "I-I built it with y-you guys i-in mind, once you first arrived h-here last year. In case you needed to be c-contained… or if you needed t-to be saved."
"This was for us?" I couldn't believe the lengths that our friend had gone to for our benefits. "Alphys…"
"Yes, w-we can talk about it l-later. Angel n-needs help now m-more than anything."
The cart came to a quick stop, one that almost made Alphys and I fly off of the thing. The doctor and I quickly stepped off and Alphys opened another set of hidden doors in walls that showed me an observation room that looked over one final hidden room in this massive building. Alphys simply walked us up to the door that opened quickly with the scan of her eye again as well as her entire hand being scanned.
We rushed into the final room where two large medical beds were set up, supplies were set up beside both beds and Alphys dragged us over to the first bed.
"A-alright, get her o-on the bed. We n-need to get o-off her c-clothes and get a-a medical g-gown on her. C-can you do t-that while I get things set up? I-I need to look at that w-wound as q-quickly as p-possible and see h-how much b-blood she lost."
"Okay." Using my magic once more, I lifted my sister with a few chains from the cart to the bed. The cart quickly retreated on its own to get out of the way while I was quick to pull my sister's clothes out of the way. Her robe was heavy and difficult to move without hurting her, eventually I gave up and ripped it from where it had already been torn over her body. The clothes underneath were still in good condition other than my sister's right arm sleeve that had been burned to prevent her arm from bleeding out to get rid of the poison. Pulling off the rest of her clothes were a blur as I haphazardly threw them out of the way while I tried to get my sister's skin exposed and ready for whatever Alphys needed to do and help her.
And then I stopped when I saw the skin on her stomach.
Small laceration scars I could see on her lower abdomen of all sizes. Many of the marks were faded and very fine in coloration, but they stood out as a pure stark white against her skin. I could see that most of the markings seemed to stretch from one of her breasts all the way down to her upper thigh. It was one long sweep, and I couldn't help but imagine it was from a broken beer bottle.
Uncle's the one who did that, wasn't he?
But I didn't have time to freak out or question her. My sister needed my help. Ignoring the markings (and planning to warn Alphys of them later) I got her set up in a gown as requested just as the doctor came back with many items on the same cart that she had whisked my sister and I on so quickly.
"I j-just took a look at the f-footage of your sister a-and Undyne's fight t-to see h-how much blood s-she lost. S-she's l-lost a lot and m-may need a t-transfusion. Do y-you know if you h-have the same t-type as your sister, Frisk?"
"No…" I shook my head regretfully. Another thing that I didn't know or could help my sister with.
"T-that's alright. I can d-do a quick test b-between her blood and yours. If you are, I'd l-like to get a b-bag ready for her, j-just in case." Alphys quickly hurried to her table and grabbed a bottle and a cloth. "S-show me your elbows real q-quick."
I obliged.
"O-okay, I can t-take a test from your l-left arm. H-here." She handed me a bottle and a rag. "Use this to c-clean your elbow for me. I-I'll take a sample a-after I get your sister h-hooked up t-to some other things."
I nodded and Alphys dove away, working with my sister. I opened the bottle and poured a small amount into the cloth I had been given. The white cloth quickly stained a dark yellow color and I rubbed that against the elbow Alphys had requested. My arm quickly took on that dark yellow coloring as the solution was rubbed all over it.
I kept rubbing at the spot until Alphys handed me another cloth. "Use t-this to take off the e-excess."
I quickly obliged, trying to work as swiftly as I could for the woman. Once my arm was rid of that yellow stuff, I present my arm over the bed for the doctor. She diligently worked with my sister for another few moments before glancing up to see me done and stepping away from her patient to approach me.
"G-go and head and sit on the other bed."
Obliging, I sat on the mattress beside my sister's, only five or so feet away. Alphys continued to work diligently around my sister, hooking her up to monitors. I could hear her heart beat and her soul beat that were put up on the many screens for Alphys to read. She watched them carefully before I saw her rush over to me.
"M-my machines will take a s-sample from your sister to f-find out what her blood is like and then I c-can test yours against it." She pulled out a needle and I couldn't help but flinch slightly at the sight of it. Her eyes softened when she saw that. "Go ahead and hold out y-your arm. Y-you can turn your h-head away if you'd like."
I couldn't help but nod and follow the soft advice.
I felt a prick in my arm right after I looked away, only to be drawn back by the curiosity when it didn't hurt as much as I guessed. I hadn't had a shot or anything of the sort since I was eight. Alphys quickly worked, drawing a sample into a vial and setting it into her cart, a few of them. Perhaps to test my blood for many things and have a fresh thing to experiment with? Or to test for diseases, maybe something else?
I watched as Alphys quickly removed the tubes from my arm, but left the needle and wrapped some tape to hold it in place. "I-I'll remove it once I know if you have the s-same blood or not. I want t-to be r-ready in case you a-are a match."
"…Okay."
Alphys meticulously worked. She set the tubes into a little machine and let them run while she raced out of the little hidden room she had for us, most likely to grab more supplies. I didn't want to disturb the work she had done so I continued to remain on the bed and watch my sister.
Her breathing had settled out, though it still sounded a tad raspy. I could see that Alphys had put a mask on her to help with breathing. She was hooked up to a metal tree of some sort that held multiple bags of nutrients. They were all entering in through my sister's remaining arm. The second one was carefully wrapped in a loose bandage that I was truly wasn't tied, but mostly to provide comfort to my sister until Alphys could get a good look at the wound and bandage it properly.
My friend was trying to do a task that normally would be done by multiple people… I couldn't believe how brave she was being.
My sister I saw flinch then, and I watched her intently as she squirmed in her bed. I could see the pain on her face, the creases in her brow. It was easy enough to see that she was having a nightmare. I wasn't by her, if she slept alone… even if I was in the same room, it didn't make any difference. I needed to be touching her to stop the nightmares from outright ruining her recovery.
But I was stuck on this bed!
"S-sorry about that F-frisk. The s-samples I just tested a-and-" Alphys came back to the room and nearly dropped what she was working on in those moments when she saw my sister. "Oh no! I-I swear I-I wasn't gone l-long!"
"Al! It's a nightmare!" I pointed to the contraption on my arm. "I can calm her down! But I need this thing out-"
I didn't even finish my sentence before Alphys had scurried over and yanked the needle from my vein. She wrapped in in under five seconds before I leapt from the table and jumped into the bed with my sister. I instantly touched her cool flesh and her body stilled somewhat, though she still twitched.
"Sissy… it's okay." I whispered to her. Her breathing was still terrible and her skin felt cold as I tried to cover her with my arms and keep her warm, watching out for the wires. "I'm right here. Calm down, I'm right here. I'm okay."
My sister's breathing was still heavy, though she did stop moving around. I had made it in time before the nightmare could have disturbed her wounds or made things worse. She always needed someone to sleep with her, it was the most dependent thing about her. Sometimes I couldn't help but feel needed in those moments, happy because I was needed by my sister. She couldn't calm down unless someone was touching her in her sleep. Sans and Papy had been some of the only people other than myself who could get her to sleep when we were sitting next to them.
Granted I was still pissed at that bonehead…
"O-oh thank goodness…" Alphys sighed as she looked over my sister and her monitors. Quickly noticing that she'd yet to wrap up my sister's arm, she gathered the supplies needed to clean the wound and wrap it. She performed these actions quickly while I looked away, not ready to see the wound just yet. "I-I forgot that she needed to sleep with someone t-touching her…"
"I got it Al." Settling down against my sister's side, I saw her breathing ease up, evening out. She calmed down as the moments ticked by and I couldn't help but sigh. "It's gonna be okay, Sissy."
"W-we'll have to m-monitor her c-carefully." Alphys pulled back and began to shift around some tubes slightly. "I-I'll get some more fluids after these drain and I-I'll hook up a feeding tube. S-she's going to need a lot of r-rest and t-time to recover. Her balance w-will be o-off when she wakes w-without the w-weight of her o-other arm there."
I blinked in shock. "But can't I give her some blood too Al?"
"N-no… you're not a match." Alphys lowered her head, her fist clenched at her side in her frustration. "I w-was going to tell you b-before Angel h-had that nightmare. Y-your blood is a positive, h-her's is o negative… she can give to you, but not-"
"the other way around…" a heated breath left me in my anger. I tried to hold back the tears, but I was scared and angry. "Of course, she could help me or another person, but I can't even help her!"
"B-but you are h-helping her… s-she's calm now and we can continue to h-help her get b-better." Alphys brought up a chair then that she sat in across the bed, looking over Angel to me. Her eyes cast over the monitors and she wrote things down on some sheets and a clipboard she had to the side. "W-while I monitor A-angel, can you tell me how you got c-caught by Undyne? O-or better yet… why were y-you both o-out here so late?"
"That's… a long story Al."
"W-well… it's a good thing that I-I have the d-day off then, isn't it?" The soft smile that she showed me was enough to make me nod.
"Okay…"
"W-we have all day. T-take your time…"
Witch's Note:
Oh! This is happy but terrifying! Angel is not out of the woods yet! Frisk is going through some serious character development in these chapters here and even Alphys is getting some love! But the past is coming back to haunt them! What in the world are our lovely ladies going to do? When in the world are the boys going to know what's happened?
It's gonna be a bumpy ride! Hold on folks!
(Mystic Girl is huffing in the background behind me, rolling her eyes.) Its about time my favorite character got some attention and love. Jesus Halloween, took you long enough!
(I pouted at her.) Hey! The flow of the story wouldn't have been so good if I didn't have this great character development! Cut me some slack! Besides, Frisk's part gets even better later on in the story. She's involved so much more. Aren't you excited for that?
Mystic Girl: Of course, I am!
Me: Then why are you complaining?
(My best friend goes to reply, yet she has no response then other than to open her mouth and pause, unsure of what to say. She glared at me in a deathly manner. With a loud huff, she hurried off to… somewhere?)
Now for words to our reviewers!:
Not A Shady Guy: Shady! Its like you know me so well! That chapter you're hoping for with Sans won't be too much longer, I promise! Actually, I think its next week for you to sink your teeth into and tell me what you think! Really hoping you'll like it!
And the part with the arm? Yeah, I'd been planning that for a heck of a long time. It just came to me during a dream I think I had about the story a few years ago when I was working on it and jumping all over the place with writing. I was simultaneously writing the Christmas arch while doing the chase, not sure how close together I wanted to put them, but I HAD to get it down.
And Frisk's raw emotion? Yeah, I really had to dive into my innermost Frisk to write out those feelings. Like I said before, we'll be focusing on younger sister dearest here for a little bit while Angel's out. Focus on growing her some more and how that she realizes she has to change, to grow up so her sister never ends up like that again. Not to mention, Angel's really gonna need some help without that arm of hers…
(In the background, Mystic Girl is honestly throwing a party at how much her character is going to be in the spotlight in the upcoming chapters. I can't help but silently laugh while continuing my work to keep my best friend happy.)
RoseCentury: My lord Rose! Pregnant?! Well congratulations! So happy for you and your fiancé! Now this means more then ever you need to make sure you take care of yourself so you and the little one have a happy life together with your fiancé okay? Do what you gotta do but don't push yourself too hard! But still, congrats! Looks like you guys are beating the odds!
MoBlue: Welcome to the story my dear! And thank you so much for reviewing! It means so much to us to hear everyone's voices! I'm glad to see the pervious chapter met your expectations for the scene! I was so happy with the way it came out! And I hope our future chapters continue to please you as well!
Thanks so much for reading everyone! Hope you all enjoyed and can't wait to see you all next week with another chapter! As I've hinted to our beloved Shady guy that next chapter will include Sans finally finding out about what the heck took place while he and Papyrus were asleep! Uh oh…
