Two Worlds, Two Souls

Chapter 55: Undyne's Dilemma

Papyrus' Point of View:

I struggled with keeping myself from flinching while Undyne proceeded to punch the metal walls of the building or stomp the metallic floors. Frisk's head in the other room shot up as she felt the tremors and fearfully watched us through the glass.

"O-oh dear!" Alphys jumped out of her chair. "I-I didn't t-think s-she'd come by s-so soon!"

I felt Sans grip back at my hand while we watched the woman. I carefully watched his hand in mine. I could feel the small jolts of magic pulsing from him. It made me concerned.

It had been a long time since Sans was this angry or frustrated.

Sans cared very deeply for Angel, I dared to think that he loved her. He was too frightened of asking if she felt the same, so it left him in this terrible limbo of sorts. If I ever got the chance, I would need to do so for him and see how she felt about my brother.

Though it also scared me when he felt this powerfully. I never wanted to admit it many times in recent years, but Sans was an amazing brother and very powerful. He wasn't a fan of fighting, preferring bad jokes and good company instead.

However, if someone he cared about was attacked, nothing could stop him when he puts his mind to it.

I was very fearful that this was one of those moments. Sans hell bent on avenging his human or keeping her safe that he would end up hurting a friend of ours both. It was very rare when Sans was motivated to do much, but when he did… it made me fearful that Undyne would fall to him, and that he would hurt a dear friend.

I could visibly see the same worry all over Alphys' face. She looked frantically to Sans who watched the monitors as Undyne stomped around downstairs. With my grip on him, he couldn't teleport easily without taking me with him, and I knew he wouldn't want to do that.

"W-we need to get her to l-leave!" Alphys quickly yanked at a microphone that was on the wall and looked through the glass to the frightened child. "F-frisk! Keep your sister safe! W-we'll take care o-of this!"

The girl dropped her head down and I was stunned to see many chains emerge from her body. I saw they protected her and leapt to lay over Angel's body to keep her safe and secure. Alphys then hurried out of the room, motioning us to follow her.

"C-come on! I n-need your h-help to stop her!"

A sigh escaped my brother, the threatening of his magical energy to seep from his eye was powerful as I saw it faintly appear. "I got this."

He lifted his free hand and used it to coat Alphys' soul blue. The doctor squealed in surprise as she was dragged to our side by her soul and Sans teleported us, only ten feet away from the raging Undyne who stood in wait of the woman with us.

"U-undyne!"

And that caused my friend to pause.

She whipped around then; her red hair swept over her shoulder as she glanced back at Alphys was relief. Her face instantly relaxed and the rampaged stopped.

"Al! Oh god damn! You're alright!" The smaller woman was grasped tightly in the arms of our blue scaled friend and wrung around like a cape in the wind. She quickly set down the smaller woman and kneeled to her level. "I was so worried with those humans in the area! I saw blood lead up to your lab! You okay?"

"I-I'm fine, Undyne."

"Good, I need to evacuate you and the other people in the area until I can get a better read on those humans." She then glanced up and saw us skeleton brothers. "Pap? Sans? What are you nerds doing here?"

"T-their helping me, U-undyne." Alphys commented before hurrying around her to us. Once she was by our sides, she glanced back at Undyne, trying to look brave. "W-we're helping those humans."

The atmosphere suddenly turned quiet dark. Undyne held a look of utter shock before she snarled at Alphys.

"ARE YOU INSANE!?" The captain of the guard roared out and the poor doctor couldn't help but flinch in response. "THOSE HUMANS WILL KILL US ALL!"

"Did they harm you in your chase?" I dared to ask, praying that she would halt in her actions.

And to my lucky stars, she did.

Undyne flinched from my question. She mumbled and huffed, throwing around angry slurs of curses and narrowing her eyes at the three of us.

"That doesn't mean they're not dangerous!"

"A-and being h-human means they a-are?" All of us were stunned at the amount of bravery that came from Alphys' words. "I-I've been watching them f-for nearly a y-year Undyne! They've d-done no harm! T-they just want t-to live t-together with us! S-start a-anew!"

Undyne froze in those moments, watching the other woman with utter disbelief.

"AND YOU BELIEVED THEM!?"

"I-I do! Especially w-when they s-saved you!"

That caused our friend to pause.

"Undyne… I can assure you that they mean no harm." I dared to try and talk with the raging woman. "Angel and Frisk have lived with us all this time-"

"Wait..." Undyne hissed in those moments looking between us. "Ravie and Sitka... they are those humans, aren't they?"

"Undyne, please!" I tried to move forward, but the grip Sans held on my hand prevented me from moving. "Listen to us. Yes, they have lived with us and have treated us very well. They are the reason for my improved skills, Sans better involvement, and increasing Alphys' bravery. They are respectable, kind, and very generous. I see both of them like sisters. They wish us no harm and just wish to live beside us. As monsters, did you ever think badly of them?"

"Of course not! They were monsters!"

I lowered my gaze. "And it's only now because you discovered they were humans that you are angry with them? Nothing else bothered you about them?"

"Pap..."

"Undyne... t-they are i-innocent people t-that you a a-attempted t-to kill!" Alphys noted to the taller female. "P-poor Frisk is t-traumatize where s-she used t-to idolize you! A-angel, who made you that a-amazing p-painting, is laying in t-there s-struggling to live!"

"We could be free, Al!" Undyne tried to sway us all, kneeling before the doctor.

"N-not at the c-cost of someone's life!"

"Damn it Alphys! Why won't you listen to me?"

"Can't ya tell? Is cuz we care about 'em."

It was the first time my brother had spoken since inside of Angel and Frisk's room upstairs. I could feel the intense energy in the air while Sans struggled to control his inner demons. Angel was special to him; we all knew that.

And I worried Undyne was about to find out just how much.

Even Undyne didn't dare to say a word as Sans' eye glowed intently, struggling to hold back the malice I'm sure he wanted to unleash against our friend. I couldn't remember if Undyne had ever backed down to anyone besides King Asgore. She never shook in fear, but I could see the thoughts pass behind her eye if she should test her strength against him or not.

Undyne narrowed her single eye at him. "Why in the world would you care about humans?"

"Eh, guess that's my problem, right?" Sans' rigid posture somewhat relaxed then, but so did Undyne's. I wasn't sure why, but she retreated her spear as well. She watched my brother carefully, feeling his magical energy slowly recede that was so overbearing only moments before.

"I want to see those humans."

"Er... I'm not sure if that would be wise..." I hesitantly looked to my brother and Alphys. Alphys nervously looked between us as well before Sans sighed and shrugged his shoulders, pulling his hand from mine to shove in his pockets.

"Just so long as she keeps her gills shut, I don't got a problem with it now that she knows." Sans closed his sockets and looked away from the taller woman. "I don't think I need ta remind ya ta behave, right?"

Undyne clicked her tongue. "Tch, whatever nerd."

"Good, I didn't wanna give ya a bad time, anyway." Sans took a few steps away from us, coating his body in a blue hue. "I'ma gonna check on the girls."

My brother left us then, lost in a flash of blue.

The stagnant air flowed around us in awkward silence. After a few beats of it, Undyne glanced to the only other female in the room.

"Where are they, Al?" Alphys jumped at Undyne's commanding tone.

"H-hidden away. I-I didn't want a-anyone finding t-them with A-angel so h-hurt." Alphys motioned for captain to follow us. "T-this way."

And up the escalator we went. Through the same pathway I was led with Sans before, we were leading Undyne to where the girls were hidden. I was... very worried that this would not go well and would end up in a fight. However, Sans seemed to believe that he had everything under control, so I supposed we would see.

Upon Alphys unlocking the external security door in her lab, Sans was already inside the room with the girls. Frisk kept her head down in her sister's side while Sans leaned against the wall, only just within arm's reach of Angel. While Sans didn't appear disturbed on his face as he glanced at us arriving, his posture said it all.

He was seeing how daring Undyne would be, how close she'd test to step to his beloved human.

Alphys and I walked in first. Alphys quickly went to read at the charts and check the nutrients hanging from the metal tree behind Frisk's head. I carefully sat at the foot of Angel's bed, being careful not to be anywhere near touching her form to avoid hurting her. Angel still seemed to struggle to breathe, granted it had only been a few minutes since we first had seen her.

"These are the humans?" Undyne seemed flabbergasted at their appearances. "They don't look all that strong."

"Little Frisk is still a child, she's still learning and growing." I offered to my friend. "Angel however, is a full-grown female of the human world. She prefers not to fight."

"Not a fighter?" Undyne snarled. "You didn't see those hundreds of chains she used to surround herself!"

"Sounds ta me like she was more or less defendin' herself." Sans hotly reminded her.

"D-did she a-attack you?" Alphys questioned.

That made Undyne's expression sour. "...no."

"S-she only did w-what she had t-to in order t-to p-protect her sister, U-undyne." Alphys chided our friend. "N-no different t-then you protecting m-monsters h-here in the u-underg-ground."

"Alphys!" I was pleasantly surprised to see that Undyne had an unusual look of shock on her. "How could you say that?"

"Y-you two are more alike than y-you think." The doctor removed some of the older bags and set up new ones, thought at a slower drip rate then I thought I'd seen them doing before. Angel's condition hardly changed as Alphys worked. "Y-you both w-want to protect t-those that matter to y-you. E-even t-that little boy you b-brought b-back to S-snowdin, m-multiple times. H-he kept g-getting in y-your way to save h-his friends. I-if she really w-was a violent h-human, w-why didn't she h-hurt you while you h-had your g-guard down w-with him?"

"That-"
"Undyne, please." I tried to reach out for my friend, even when she so quickly retreated back away from me. "They are even kinder than many monsters we have seen over the years. What difference does it make that she's a human or monster? You cared about them as Little Sitka and Ravie, Little Frisk and Angel are no different in their mannerisms. They didn't lie about the struggles they faced, nor the fact that they care."

"Even you Pap…" Undyne looked between us all in bewilderment. "You all would betray the king, give up on our dream for freedom, in order to protect some friggin' humans?"

"T-those humans h-have d-done more for our c-community then you c-can fathom. They've s-slowly m-made friends throughout t-the underg-ground and h-hope to do so with e-everyone, e-even the k-king-"

"Now I know their crazy." Undyne held up her hands to stop us from speaking further. "I need a minute… this… this is insane! I… I need some air!"

Spinning on her heel, Undyne left the room. We all watched the space where she'd stood for only a few moments before turning to each other worriedly.

"O-oh dear…" Alphys focused her gaze on Sans, who still and a very two-toned look about him. "S-should we go after her?"

"I will," Sans sighed, glancing over at Angel for a moment before his figure was encased in blue. "Keep the girls safe."

And just like that he was gone as well.

I saw Frisk barely look out over the form of Angel, something dark in her eye looming forward, seeing nothing before her but what her mind presented to the young child.

"We really screwed up... didn't we?"

"N-no... I-I think t-this would have h-happened even if S-sans and Angel d-didn't fight..." Alphys patted the younger girl's back. "J-just give her t-time... S-she'll come around once she sees all y-you've done..."

I could see it in her eyes, how Little Frisk didn't believe her in those moments with how much was against us and all they had suffered in the last eight hours. She simply lowered her head, sleep desperately needed before she could come to terms with things. And I couldn't help but feel a pain in the back of my soul that my dearest best human friend would never smile again after all of this.

Sans' Point of View:

Undyne wasn't difficult to follow once she left the lab. She swore, hissed, and knocked over every little inanimate object in her path with a fury unmatched by few. It was easy ta follow so many paces back and not interfere with her rage. The few people who were up at the early hour of six quickly moved away. Undyne didn't even notice as I kept pace with her, followin' her back ta Snowdin.

There was a crowd when we got back. Most people surrounded our home, which… actually kinda surprised me. I wasn't expectin' a crowd at all. No one really bothered us at all, unless Angel had planned somethin' before everythin' went down…

The smoke caught my attention first before I got any closer. Undyne seemed ta notice it too as we both looked ta my house as it was eaten up by flames that licked inside the windows. I could see the front door had been broken down and the fire department, along with Vinnie of the royal guard, helped ta put it out.

Fuck. I musta left the coffee pot on or somethin'. Pap and Angel are gonna kill me…

A heated breath left me as I trudged forward ta see the damage of our home.

Undyne stopped as she made it inta the middle of the crowd. For once, she wasn't jumpin' in heard first. She stood there and watched as Vinnie walked out, soot all over him while others seemed ta continue ta rush inside.

"Vinnie!" Out of the corner of my socket did I see Bernie and her sister appear, Maria right behind her. "Was anyone hurt?"

"Seems like they weren't home, Ma. We searched all over for them, but none of them were there. The fire only got ta the living room and the kitchen where it started, the bedrooms were just caked in smoke. But no signs of Sans, Pap, Angel or Frisk."

As Vinnie continued ta talk of the fire, I focused my attention ta Undyne. Her face contorted inta absolute fury that one of her own men knew about the girls.

Ah, fuck.

"YOU KNEW?!" Undyne roared in her fury and had Vinnie held up by his front armor plate. The eldest of Bernie's kid's were stunned as hell when he saw his captain's ugly mug in his face, shoutin' profanities.

Didn't last more than a few moments, though.

"Hands off my son, you bitch!" A solid punch ta the jaw stunned Undyne enough ta loosen her grip on Vinnie. The male took only a second ta pull himself free and put distance between himself and his captain, knowin' fully well how difficult she was in this kinda state. He yanked his mother behind him, shootin' her a look ta not piss his captain off more.

"The hell Boss?" Vinnie kept a somewhat crouched position while he narrowed his eyes at Undyne. She hissed out in retaliation when she came ta her senses and lunged.

"The humans! You knew about them being here!" Spears instantly appeared in her hands that she flung at her subordinate. Vinnie groaned before punchin' the spears with his hands, shatterin' them on impact.

"You really are gonna fight me in the middle of town?! With my Ma and siblings here?!"

"Just fight me damnit!"

"Would you damn well calm down?! You're gonna hurt someone!"

"Traitor!" More spears flung his way that Vinnie deflected. "How could you do this to us? We could have been free! We could have taken back what belong to us!"

"STOP!"

Everythin' froze when MK, the little adopted lizard boy with no arms, tried ta stop her with his head against her pelvis. And that made Undyne still.

She narrowed her eyes at him. "Move it squirt."

He glared at her defiantly. "No!"

"MK!" Maria darted out for her son, only for the little lizard ta latch his teeth inta Undyne's leg.

"FUCK!" Undyne quickly hobbled. Her spears vanished instantly while she tried ta pry the kid off her leg.

Damn… she is really diggin' a hole for herself in this town…

Maria on then managed ta grab ahold of her son before she snarled and roared. "Robert! Now!"

The father bear latched his muscle filled arms around Undyne instantly. Somethin' she quickly tried ta break from. Once MK saw his father have her, he released her, only for Robert ta allow them ta fall, Undyne crushed under the weight of the bear. Before she could attempt ta try and throw him off of herself, other residents of Snowdin piled onta Robert's body that held her down. Undyne struggled under the weight of nearly ten bodies, able ta lift them even an inch before fallin' when more piled on.

"God damn, Boss." Vinnie sighed and kneeled before her. "I knew you'd be pissed when you found out, but I didn't think you'd lash out at the towns' people."

Undyne looked so overwhelmed then. I couldn't help but shake my head as I watched her through the crowd, no one had yet seen me. If Angel had been there, she would have been concerned, or tried ta plead her case ta the woman. But I knew Undyne wouldn't listen, that wasn't her style or her way.

"And you call yourself the head of the guard?" Bernie's quip had her son turn on her in an instant.

"Ma, don't be like that. She's not like us."

"Not like us?" Maria quickly covered her son's ears ta prevent bein' heard by him. "Not like murderers?"

And it was that special word that made Undyne blink at the mother that stood before her. Her posture froze under the many bodies of males that held her down.

"Do you honestly think that if we had any fear, any worry in the back of our minds that we'd let them near us? Near our children? Fight for them so hard? Capitan of the guard, you are very blind." Maria's infuriated look turned ta that of disappointment. "Do you think it was an easy thing, for them to earn our trust? The entire town of Snowdin that threw you to the ground as a threat? Tell me, would you kill one of our children if it meant your freedom?"

Undyne looked like she wanted ta reply, but her mouth stayed shut as she simply stared at the displeased looks around her, noticin' just how many were against her and the way she was actin'.

Maria sighed, but continued with her rant. "We view these girls as people, just like they see us. No better or worse than them. We are friends, family. We love them and treasure them so with all they have done to help us and how we have come to adore them."

Undyne didn't reply, contemplatin' her next move on how ta ease the crowd.

But… I figured she'd had enough grief for one day.

"I think she beary much got the picture, Maria." Everyone seemed startled as I approached through the crowd. It took the bear a few moments ta realize I was there, just gettin' done dealin' with Undyne, protectin' her kid, and what not. When Maria figured out it was me, she barreled over in a second.

"Sans! Oh my goodness. You're alright!" The mother bear patted me down, lookin' for any signs of distress. "Are the others alright as well? Did anyone get harmed by the fire?"

"Nah, none of us were home when that happened. Sorry 'bout the scare." I waved her off. "Pap and Frisk and fine, but ah… Angel… she's recoverin' right now. Can't give out too many details. The person who's helpin' us out said ta keep a low profile right now, least until she recovers, so what happened and who knows where she is, gotta be kept under raps for now."

"But she's safe?" the woman pressed.

"Yeah, Pap and I'll be takin' turns keepin' watch." Carefully turnin' my gaze over, I looked at Undyne who remained down, not botherin' ta fight, though she did manage ta glare at me from her single eye. "You can let her go, Maria. I got her."

Robert growled from under the pile of people and Vinnie showed his visible displeasure. "Sans, I don't think that's wise."

"Eh, we'll be fine. I think Maria made plenty of points that Undyne's gonna be thinkin' about." I waved them off anyway. "Undyne here's comin' back with me ta help out, besides, she gotta learn more about those human friends of ours anyway."

Undyne kept her single eye on me with an irritated glance.

With a heavy sigh from the others, the monsters that had piled on the fish woman began ta recede. Eventually Undyne was able ta jump ta her feet, crossed her arms, and scowled at me.

I raised a socket at her. "You done for the day?"

The woman only scoffed at me.

"I don't need ta remind ya ta behave, right?"

At that comment, Undyne sulked, turnin' away from me entirely.

"Ah damn…" I rubbed the back of my skull from the stress. Tryin' ta keep calm, I sucked in a deep breath before turnin' ta the other royal guardsman. "I'll give ya a call later, Vinnie."

The male bunny nodded just before I teleported ta Undyne, grabbed under her arm, and teleported us back inta the first-floor lab in Hotland.

"Welp, that went better than expected."

And I just had a moment ta avoid a spear, stabbin' in my direction.

"What the hell?!" I teleported away as Undyne lunged. A battle cry let loose from her lungs before she charged again.

"You damn skeleton! Why?"

Undyne got too close for likin'. A hand of mine flew up and latched in a death grip of blue magic. Her soul pulled forcibly from her body and her movements came ta a halt.

"WHY?!" When she no longer could move, she struggled still against my hold, showin' me the true power of the capital of the royal guard. "Why does no one understand?"

"They understand, Undyne, but they don't care."

The woman forced her gaze at me, a bright golden eye that reminded me of liquid fire. Burnin' endlessly and destroyin' everythin' in its path. And yet, in that moment, I saw her eye gloss over. Somethin' I'd never seen before.

Yet, I knew she wouldn't cry.

"They don't want freedom if it means hurtin' someone they care 'bout." I huffed, tryin' ta keep the flow of magic steady. Undyne had already forced me ta use more then I'd planned for the day. I didn't want her ta have me use much more and dip inta emergency reserves. "Don't you wanna find out why they feel that way?"

The blazin' look from the woman softened, if only a little.

"Give us a chance ta explain, without blowin' up after every sentence. You'll never understand if you do that." I slowly lowered my hand, releasin' Undyne free of my entrapment of her. "Give Angel and Frisk a real chance ta show you who they are and maybe you'll change your mind about humans."

"Tch, I doubt it."

"With an attitude like that, you're right."

"Ugg! Fine!" Undyne threw her fist, hittin' the wall, but she calmed down, even if only slightly. "I'll talk to the stupid human girl."

"Good." With some of her hostility purged from the air, I yawned. "Come on up. You can sit and talk with Alphys for a bit while the girls' rest. Then you can drag Pap or I ta ask about the girls. Let Frisk at least rest a bit before you talk ta her, 'kay?"

"She's not the only one who's tired, you sorry sack of bones." I raised a socket at her. Undyne walked away from me then, headin' toward the second floor where Alphys had a couch by a TV ta watch anime when she wasn't workin'. She kicked off her shoes, landed face first inta the couch, before reachin' for the nearby remote and flippin' through the channels. "Come get me in a few hours."

It was hard ta remember some times that Undyne had chased them all night and was now feelin' the effects. As soon as I heard her lightly breathin', I sighed and turned away, teleportin' back ta the others.

I knew Alphys would watch her.

Witch's Note:

Okay, maybe we can breathe? I'm honestly not sure in this moment. (Both Mystic Girl and I are currently hiding from Undyne as she was tearing apart my office in her rage. She couldn't find us as we hid in a secret spot in the ceiling. Worst case scenario, we could sneak out a second entrance to the room in the lining of the wall.)

Mystic Girl: What the fuck do we do? We can't stay here forever!

(Her tone was hushed so Undyne couldn't hear us as she raged. We didn't dare speak if we didn't hear Undyne destroying something. We knew she'd be able to find us if even the tiniest of sounds could be heard.)

Me: Yeah, let's take the secret passage out. And then let's go to the ultra-secret Lemon Sponge Pie Bakery so we can get back to work while she wreaks the area. I'll get the team to work on fixing my office later. With Undyne proof doors and walls so my office and room will survive next time.

Mystic Girl: You had me at Lemon Sponge Pie!

Now let's see our reviewers this week!

Not A Shady Guy: Oh Shady! Come on! Don't tell me you didn't know about the second story? Both myself and Mystic Girl have hinted at it like… SO many times! But yes! There will be a second story on the way. Honestly, we're about… twenty-three chapters into it out of seventy-two. Not quite as many as this story, but still lots of lovely things to go over with the lives of Angel and Sans!

By the way, does this count as her not going too far off the deep end?!

RoseCentury: Good to hear Rose! Hey, both Mystic and I would love to know how far along you are, if you're okay with telling us? No stress, if you don't feel like it. Just curious.

And limited sugar?! How dare you, fiancé! You need the sugar! For the baby! FOR YOU!

MajorKO: Hello! Welcome to the story! So happy to see another new face! And wow! Powered through all fifty something chapters? Dang… but glad to hear you love the story so much and thank you for reviewing! Never be afraid to share your thoughts and comment like some of the others! We love to do a bit of bantering sometimes!

And that seems like a good place to leave this~

(At the current moment, Mystic Girl and I are currently stuffing our faces with some lovely food, including the elusive Lemon Sponge Pie! I rare delicacy among those of this world. Ignoring all else, including the destruction of my writing studio, we eat in peace, knowing we have more to look forward to next time.)

Also, sorry for the delay in posting. Family obligations were going on and I was away from Internet until later Saturday evening, unable to post. Hopefully everyone isn't too mad...
