BPOV

Before I knew it I was finishing my very last shift at Newton's. They held a little party while we worked. Streamers and those noise blowers. Every time one of the other staff saw me. They blew it and made a big deal. At the end of the day I was bombarded with hugs and told I always had a position should I want to return. Katie, the girl they trained to take my place was really nice and I think her and Mike started dating but I was a bit distracted with school and focusing on the impending fight in hopes of seeing another vision that I wasn't quite sure.

The fight was at least 3 weeks away but I was still worried. The pack worked closely with the Cullen's to train.

Alice hadn't seen anything about Victoria or Riley since they saved Bree, who was adjusting well and just come back from her mother's funeral. Her dad was in jail, with no bail, and they were talking about life in prison without parole.

Edward and Bree seemed to be getting close. She knew he was a good man, despite his overprotective nature, but he seemed to give her a lot more credit than he ever gave me, though she didn't seem to trip over her own feet at every turn, which surprisingly, I stopped doing. I had a theory it had to do with confidence because around Jake, I always felt confident and at my best . Anyways, they seemed happy whenever I saw them with each other and Edward acted more carefree, like a true 17 year old. Everyone seemed to be exactly where they belonged.

Life had a way of messing with things though.

As I headed down to Jake's the Saturday morning after my last day of work, the clouds grew darker. A storm was coming and I needed to get there before it hit. I knew this truck would keep me safe but I didn't want to give Jake any reason to worry.

It was 7am, and I was antsy to see Jake when he got off patrol. I knew he'd fall asleep for a bit but that gave me time to help him around the house, cleaning and cooking. He does so much for the tribe and while Billy is capable, it isn't easy for him to get everything done.

Somewhere between the treaty line and Jake's the truck broke down. I just put gas in, so I knew it wasn't that, but when I looked to see if anything was showing on the dash, the gas read empty which made no sense. The sky was getting darker and light rain started to hit the windshield. I grabbed for my phone but I was in that weird 5 minute stretch of road that never seemed to get any reception.

Against my better judgement I hopped out of the truck into the rain that was getting worse by the minute and was about to open the hood when I noticed that distinct oily rainbow mixing with the rain on the road and a light smell of gasoline. I laid down on a clean spot of the road, clean compared to a gas soaked area, and looked under the truck, and sure enough, the gas line was leaking.

"Crap." Where is everyone? As if on cue, a howl could be heard in the distance. It didn't sound nearby at all. I went to stand but suddenly there was pressure on my back, preventing me from moving, slowly getting heavier.

"Little. Miss. Bella. Swan." The voice was feminine yet stern. "Do you know how much trouble you've caused me? First your mate kills mine. Then I have to try and wiggle around your stupid Tinkerbell's visions."

"I-I'm sorry." Keep her talking, Bella. "I can't imagine the pain you must be feeling, having lost James… I went to him, to surrender. I had no idea the Cullen's would find me."

"Shut up!" Victoria's voice cracked with emotion and her foot pressed harder into my back. I gasped for air, barely getting enough. My vision started to blur as I felt a crack. I cried out in pain and knew something was broken.

The pressure on my back disappeared but then I was being pulled to my feet. I heard a howl in the distance again and a far away yelp like someone was in pain. Oh, so that's why nobody was here when I crossed the border, the other vampires.

Victoria slammed me against the truck, the drivers side window shattered behind me.

"I'm sorry." I knew begging for my life wouldn't work, but maybe something else would. "Killing me won't get back at Edward. He's moved on, and… James never wanted me to begin with. He wanted Alice."

"SHUT. UP!" She screeched. Her hand fisting my hair tightly. She could easily rip out my hair, along with my scalp if she moved the wrong way. "I finally got you! No psychic to protect you. All I had to do was the same thing every day for an entire month, never making a plan to strike until the second before doing so. No plans, equal no vision." Victoria laughed as she brought her teeth down to my neck but suddenly she was gone and I was thrown to the ground roughly, scraping my hands on the broken glass of my window which littered the ground, old and in shards unlike new vehicle glass which broke in little cubes.

Jake pulled Victoria off of me as Alice fought Riley off to the side.

I didn't know how long I sat there but eventually Victoria managed to get her arms around Jake. I heard him yelp as she tossed him into a large rock at the side of the road. She walked toward him but my vision was blurred and I couldn't see all that happened, but knew she was about to deal a killing blow.

I did the first thing that popped into my head, channelling the courage the Third Wife had, I picked up a shard of glass and sliced down my forearm, my blood falling to the ground as both Victoria and Riley were distracted.

Alice seemed fine with the smell and just before I lost consciousness, I saw Alice rip the head off of Riley, tossing it far from his body, then setting his body on fire. She attacked Victoria, too distracted by my blood to see it coming. The world went black and I just hoped my sacrifice wasn't in vain.
