Not long after Frisk fell asleep, Toriel entered the room carrying two plates that had a slice of pie and a bar of chocolate each. Glancing over at Frisk and seeing that she was asleep Toriel quietly placed one of the plates on the floor near the bed before walking over to Chara.

"Here you are my child." Toriel said as she crouched down and held the plate out for Chara. "I hope you like it."

Chara took the plate and placed it the floor next to her before grabbing the bar of chocolate. After Chara had opened the wrapping she noticed that Toriel was watching her closely. She looked at Toriel questioningly, causing Toriel to quickly look away.

Toriel cleared her throat and said, "Um, I want you to know how glad I am to have someone here. There are so many old books I want to share with you two. I want to show you my favorite bug-hunting spot. I've also prepared a curriculum for your education, though I may have to adjust it to a higher grade, as I was not expecting older children. This may come as a surprise to you, but I have always wanted to be a teacher. Actually, perhaps that isn't very surprising. STILL. I am glad to have you two living here."

Chara simply nodded as she took a bite out of the bar of chocolate, but quickly froze as she realized she couldn't taste it. Toriel seemed not to notice as she stood up and made for the door.

"I hope you will both be comfortable here." Toriel said before leaving the room.

Chara stared at the flavorless chocolate bar before glancing over at the slice of pie. Reaching for it she took a small bite, but the results were the same, she couldn't taste anything. Chara sighed as she questioned why she felt nothing about this revelation. Glancing over at Frisk she realized her answer.

After an hour had passed Frisk began to toss and turn in her sleep. She would occasionally cry out saying that she was "sorry" or that she "had to do this". The whole time tears were squeezing out from her closed eyes. Chara simply watched as Frisk continued to suffer through her nightmare.

Eventually Frisk finally sat up and looked to Chara who hadn't budged from her spot on the floor.

"Hey Chara, how long was I asleep?" Frisk asked as she got out of bed and pulled her boots on.

"A few hours." Chara replied flatly as she stood up and placed her chocolate and pie into her inventory. "Are you ready to go?"

"Ready." Frisk said as she placed her own chocolate and pie in inventory.

The girls left the room and made their way into the living room. Toriel was sitting in her chair next to the fireplace, reading a book. Frisk and Chara approached her, causing Toriel to look up from her book and smile.

"Up already, I see?" Toriel said. "Did you want something? What is it?"

"When can I go home?" Frisk asked as gently as she could.

Toriel looked slightly hurt as she said, "What? This... this IS your home now. Um... would you like to hear about this book I am reading? It is called 72 Uses for Snails. How about it?"

"How do we exit the RUINS?" Frisk replied.

"Here is an exciting snail fact." Toriel said with a hint of desperation in her voice. "Did you know that snails, sometimes flip their digestive systems as they mature? Interesting."

"How do we exit the RUINS?" Frisk repeated.

After a brief pause Toriel said, "I have to go do something. You two stay here." Before putting her book away and leaving the living room.

Chara and Frisk followed her down the stairs into the corridor that lead to the RUINS' exit. After a short walk they caught up with Toriel.

"You wish to know how to return 'home,' do you not? Ahead of us lies the end of the RUINS. A one-way exit to rest of the Underground. I am going to destroy it. No one will ever be able to leave again. Now be good children and go upstairs." Toriel said before continuing down the hall.

The girls went after her and quickly caught up.

"Every human that falls down here meets the same fate. I have seen it again and again. They come. They leave. They die. You naïve child, if you leave the RUINS, they, Asgore, will kill you. I am only protecting you, do you understand? ...Take Chara, and go to your room." Toriel said to Frisk before walking further down the hall.

Chara and Frisk silently went after her, easily closing the distance.

"Do not try to stop me. This is your final warning." Toriel said as she made her way down the final stretch of hallway.

Before Chara could follow Frisk stopped her.

"Chara, she going to ask me to prove whether or not I'm able to survive in the rest of the Underground." Frisk said with a worried look on her face. "Which means we're going to have to FIGHT her."

"Get to the point." Chara said coldly.

"You don't have to do this if you don't want to. I can do it alone if that's okay." Frisk said.

Chara shrugged as she said bluntly, "I don't care. Let's just get this over with." Before following Toriel to the RUINS' exit.

The girls found Toriel standing in front of the the exit. Hearing them approach, Toriel said, "You want to leave so badly? Hmph. You are just like the others. There is only one solution to this. Prove yourself... Prove to me you are strong enough to survive."

Toriel turned to face them as their SOULs floated out of their chests. Chara selected the ACT button and tried to talk with her.

"Come on mom, we need to get through." Chara said flatly.

It was Toriel's turn but surprising them both, she didn't attack. Frisk looked at Chara questioningly, Chara simply looked back just as confused as she was. It was Frisk's turn and she quickly pressed the MERCY button and selected spare. But Toriel didn't attack again, she simply stood in front of them like a furry statue.

Chara selected talk again and said, "Are you going to attack mom?"

Toriel as if woken from a trance finally said, "I... I... I cannot do this. I cannot bring myself to harm you." Tears began to run down her cheeks as she continued, "Chara my child, is it really you? How have you come back after all these years? You and Asriel had both... both... Please tell me that you are real and this is not some dream."

Frisk was stunned, she had thought that Toriel could not recognize Chara. Looking over at her Frisk saw that Chara's face was blank before a small grin appeared.

"Yes mom, it really is me." Chara said as her smile widened. "You must have a great many questions."

Toriel wiped the tears from her eyes as she said, "Yes but none of that matters right now. The only thing that does matter is that you are alive and well. So let us stop this silly FIGHT."

The FIGHT was brought to an end as Chara and Frisk's SOULs returned.

*Chara and Frisk don't need to FIGHT Toriel. This fills you with Determination.*
