Oh ! Brother :

I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. If only I had been able to see what would arrive. If only I was the one who lain there on the grey, cold sidewalk. But you are, little brother.

I'm here too, by your side, holding you so strongly that I wonder how you would not feel it.

I feel you shiver in my arms. I can feel the pain in your whole body. I can feel the blood slid along my hands, from your wound, from your throat, sliding on your chest and paint the floor in dark red.

You open your light blue eyes...

You glare at me. In spite of your pale skin, you seem to be the strongest of us both. You look at me and smile.

Now, I remember of all... All that you told me... Childhood, family, Tanglewood boys, city life... You survived at that. And it's just because of me that you lay on the cold floor, on the halo of the streetlights, just because I'm a damn cop and 'cause I'm your friend. And because two days ago, I made lock somebody. A guy, completely crazy. I can't remember his face or at least his name. I have already forgive him. But he don't. He's just a stranger for me, for you. A crazy stranger... a crazy stranger with a knife. He know my address, he was going to kill me.

But you were there. He probably saw you past my door, wondering which point your death would wound me. He stayed in the hallway all the night, waiting until the match of baseball is finished. That we finished our beer, our pizza. You just said "See you tomorrow !" before go away, smiling.

I heard something, maybe a yell, I don't remember exactly. Suddenly, I had a bad feeling. I ran downstairs and there...

You.

And the guy.

The guy with the knife.

He ran away.

I hesitated to follow him, but I saw the blood on your collar. I saw your unbelieving glance. And then, you began to fall. You didn't know what happened to you.

Now, you're there. Your eyes are open. Your light blue eyes. Your glassy eyes. Looking the stars, the night and the dark sky. You seem amazed.

Now, I'm here. I'm afraid. I search any vital sign, a heartbeats, a breath... but nothing.

"Hang on !" I hear somebody yell. It's just me.

I shake you.

"Hang on, Danny ! Hey, buddy, don't let me !"

Tears blur my vision. I taste salt on my lips. My cheeks are wet.

Now, you're lain on the red-blue lights of the ambulance. You're still. You're cold. You're dead.

But I need you to know something. Something I wanted to tell you many times before. Just five words.

"I love you, little brother."
