How Do You Say Goodbye – Chapter 12

000000000000000000000000000000000

Frank slowly opens his eyes, and is greeted by a tangle of red hair. Nancy. His lips curl into a smile. He watches her sleep for a few minutes then he carefully gets out of bedtrying his best not to disturb her.

Frank makes his way into the kitchen. In the refrigerator he finds eggs, milk, bread, and orange juice. Nan and Bess must have gone shopping yesterday morning. He looks in all the kitchen cupboards and finds some cereal and the coffee that he knew would be there. He also manages to locate the dishes and two breakfast trays.

A smirk finds Franks lips. Breakfast in bed. He quickly gather together a frying pan, eggs, milk, bread, mixing bowl, spatula, whisk, two plates, two trays, and coffee. He sighs as he picks up the coffee. As much as I want a cup, it will have to wait. Nan will come running if she smells coffee, then my surprise will be ruined.

As Frank makes breakfast he allows his mind to wander to yesterdays events.

flashback

Frank had been pleasantly shocked when he saw Nancy walk down the aisle. He thought she looked like an angle. For a moment he forgot how to breathe, but managed to quickly get back in control of himself.

As Nancy drew closer to Frank, he noticed the tears in her eyes. His heart broke of her and at that moment more than anything else he wanted to take her away from all the prying eyes and comfort her. He knew that he couldn't, because they had to go through the wedding for the sake of their cover.

Frank decided he would do whatever it took to make her relax and hopefully enjoy herself. His plan started at the alter. He whispered a joke in her ear when her 'father' gave her to him. Then he made silly faces at her whenever it looked like her tears were going to fall.

Frank knew they must have been quite a sight, a crying bride and a goofy groom. He didn't care because it started to work. Slowly her tears dried up and she started to return his smiles. He was afraid that she would start crying during the vows, but his fears were unfounded.

Nancy started to drift back into melancholyness during the combined photo sessions. Because they were posing, Frank hadn't been able to crack jokes to take her mind off their troubles. He had tried to get her to lighten up during dinner, but she did her best to ignore him and talked to Bess instead.

When the cake was rolled out, Frank knew what he had to do. He knew Nancy would get a kick out of retaliating, with the cake. He hadn't meant to kiss her, but he couldn't resist the mix of anger and playfulness in her eyes. He had been pleased to discover she didn't mind, an angry Drew was not something he liked to deal with.

Nancy and Frank had left the reception shortly after their dance. The limo had dropped them off at the cottage, and he carried her over the threshold. Her protests fell on def ears. He had let her out of his arms when they reached the couch. He had laughed at the sight of her pouting lips, crossed arms, and eyes filled with mock anger. He had asked her what she wanted to do with the rest of their evening; her answer had been hot tub.

After hut tubing they had retired to the living room to watch TV. After spending fifteen minutes looking for something to watch and finding nothing, Frank turned off the TV. He had sighed in frustration. Nancy had suggested that they go rent a movie, but he said it might not be a good idea for them to leave the house on their wedding night.

Nancy had reluctantly agreed. She went through the closets in the house to see if there were any games, finding none she complained to Frank that she was bored. He got up and went downstairs to the guest bedroom, returning with a book in his hand. He had bought it on Sunday back in Atlanta, and had not started it yet.

Frank came and sat down next to Nancy on the couch. She had wanted to know what book he had brought up. He had handed it over to her. It was a hard back copy of The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide. She had commented that she had always wanted to read those books, as she handed it back to him.

Frank surprised her by asking if she would like him to read it to her. A smile had played across her lips and she nodded her head. As he read to her, she decided to sprawl out on the couch. She placed her feet on his lap as she listened to his calming voice. After about an hour she fell asleep.

Frank had put the book down on the coffee table. He carefully lifted Nancy's legs off his lap, and stood up. He knelt down beside her sleeping form and kissed her on her forehead, she didn't stir. He knew he shouldn't let her sleep on the couch so he gently picked her up and carried her into the bedroom.

After Frank pulled the covers over Nancy's body he turned to leave. Her eyes flew open and her hand reached for his. He turned back to look at her. She had closed her eyes as if to get rid of an image, and asked him to stay. He brought her hand up to his lips and gave it a soft kiss. Then he walked over to the other side of the bed and climb in.

end of flashback

Frank finished up the eggs. He divides them equally on both plates, and then he get the toast. He butters the four slices and cuts them diagonally. Then he places them neatly on the two plates.

Next Frank gets the orange juice out of the refrigerator and two glasses out of the cupboard. He sets a plate and a glass on each tray, and then he gets a set of silverware for each. He walks over to the coffee pot and turns it on. Finally I'll get to have coffee.

Frank picks up the tray closest to him and slowly makes his way into the bedroom. I hope she'll like this.

000000000000000000000000

Nancy is enjoying a pleasant dream about being on a cruise. She had just agreed to join a cute crew member for a scandalous midnight swim. She is just about to dive into the clear water when the sent of coffee hits her noise. I don't remember seeing a coffee pot by the pool.

Wait a minuet, this is a dream. That must mean the coffee is on the outside. I need to wake up. Nancy's eyes snap open at her last thought, and sure enough she can smell coffee. She stretches her arms and is about to get out of bed, when Frank enters the room.

"Fr … Mal," Nancy asks sleepily, and gestures her head towards the tray in a questing manner. "Morning sleeping beauty, I have breakfast for you," replies Frank with a large smile on his face. He walks over to her side of the bed, and she scoots herself up into a sitting position. He sets the tray down over her lap then takes a seat on the edge of the bed.

Nancy gives Frank a small smile then looks over her tray; scrambled eggs and toast with orange juice to drink. Where's the coffee? "I just put the coffee on; I didn't want to wake you till breakfast was ready. It should be ready in a few minuets," he says answering her unspoken question.

A smile plays across Nancy's lips. Same old Frank, reading my thoughts before I can voice them. "It smells wonderful, but I don't want to eat alone," she says softly. Frank gives her a smirk. "All ready got that covered," he says. He stands up and quickly exits the room.

I can't believe he made me breakfast in bed. Nancy picks up her fork and tastes a bit of the eggs. So fluffy, I wonder how he did it. When ever I try I can never get them to come out like this. Frank comes back into the room caring the other tray. He sets it down on the foot of the bed, then takes a mug off it and hands it to Nancy. "My lady's coffee," he says. This causes her to giggle and almost spill her coffee. Finally the giggles settle down and she clasps the mug between both hands and causelessly takes her first sip.

Nancy lets out a sigh of contentment. Meanwhile Frank has settled himself on the other side of the bed, and is pulling his tray over to himself. He finally manages to get it over his lap without spilling anything.

They eat in silence. When they finished Frank gathered all the dishes on one tray and put it on top of the other. Before he can take the trays away, Nancy places on of her hands on top of his. The contact makes them both shiver, and stare deep into each others eyes.

Nancy removes her hand and her eyes fall to her lap. "Thanks for breakfast," she says softly. Franks eyes twinkle, "well I always make breakfast in bed, for the lady who allows me to share said bed." Share bed? Oh god, I asked him to stay with me last night.

Nancy turns a bright shade of red. Frank gives a small chuckle as he picks up the trays and heads out the door. "Why don't you take a shower while I clean up," he calls over his shoulder. She stares after him for a full minuet before walking over and closing the door.

She leans back against the door and allows her self to slide down into a sitting position. This is bad, I asked Frank Hardy to share my bed last night. Bess is never going to let me live this down. OK Drew get a hold of yourself. You can handle this.

So Frank sleep in the same bed as you last night, he didn't try anything did he, asks the voice in her head. No. Well then there isn't a problem, you just had an overwhelming day, a bad dream, and didn't want to be alone, answers the voice.

Nancy sighs, "You're right, nothing has changed." She gets up and walks over to her suitcase still talking to herself. "I just need to take a long hot shower, and stop thinking about us."

0000000000000000000000000

Joe wakes up and looks around the room. He's sleeping on the couch in the living room of the cottage he's sharing with Bess. Their house only had one bedroom, so therefore one bed. Being the gentleman he is he offered to take the couch, just as he had the night before when frank stayed there.

Joe slowly sits up and his body is protesting every movement he makes. Dam, tonight Bess gets to couch. I don't think I'm going to be able to move tomorrow if I spend a third night on it. Maybe she won't object if we trade off nights.

Joe hears the bedroom door open and Bess walks in dressed in blue jeans, a white shirt, and a dark purple hoody. He gives her a lopsided smile. "Morning," he says. "Not for much longer," she replies back. He raises an eyebrow questionably. "Really, what time is it," he asks.

Bess walks over and sits down on the couch, being careful to move the improvised bedding out of the way. "It's eleven thirty. If you weren't awake when I came out, I was going to bang some pots together." "Really, I didn't think you knew what a pot looked like," quips Joe. A flash of anger quickly goes through her eyes. "Well, I guess that means you don't want me to make some breakfast then," she says with mock anger.

Bess stands up and starts to make her way into the kitchen. Joe quickly follows her and grabs her from behind. "Hey, I'm sorry. I know you know what a pot looks like and I would love some breakfast." She puts her arms around his and gently pries them off her. Then she turns around to face him.

Bess crosses her arms and puts a pout on her face, but her eyes are laughing. "Not good enough," she says. Joe groans, what is she going to make me do for breakfast. Her pout turns into a large smile. Now I'm in for it.

"You will have to promise to buy me the latest Shania Twain CD, and then listen to it with me," Bess says trying not to laugh. Joe falls down to his knees and lifts his hand up to her pleadingly. "No, anything but that," he cries. She doubles over in laughter.

"OK you convinced me to for go punishment for now," Bess says when she finally gets back in control of her self. Joe claps her hands in his, "thank you fair lady." Bess has another fit of giggles. God she's beautiful when she laughs. He gets back up off the floor. "But you are going to have to be the one to call the happy couple, and find out what we're doing today."

Joe gives Bess a wink, "sure I'll call Mal then take a shower. Be sure not to peep." Bess rolls her eyes and walks into the kitchen to scrounge up breakfast. He watches her backside disappear into the kitchen, and then walks over to grab his cell phone off the coffee table.

Joe dials Frank's number, and walks into the bedroom. "Good morning," answers Frank. "Hey big brother, any idea what's on today's agenda?" "No, I was going to discuss it with Bell after we both had a shower. Why don't you and Marla come over and we'll figure it out together."

Joe walks over to his suitcase and starts to rummage through it looking for something to wear. "Sounds good, but after breakfast OK." He hears Frank chuckle on the other end. "You haven't eaten yet? I'm surprised you're not dieing of hunger."

"Had to wait for my woman to agree to cook me breakfast," complains Joe. Frank lets out a laugh, "don't let Marla here you say that. I don't want to have to visit the local hospital." "You and me both, I already got in trouble this morning for implying she didn't know what a pot is."

Frank lets out another chuckle, and Joe finds a pair of black jeans and a red T-shirt. "I'm sure you used the old Hardy charm to get out of any punishment though," states Frank. "Mostly," answers Joe. He hears Frank turn on the water. "You're not planning on taking a shower while on the phone with me are you?"

"No, I'm just doing the dishes form the breakfast in bed I made Bell," answers Frank. "Breakfast in bed? Getting a little personal aren't we bro," teases Joe. He can hear Frank curse for letting that slip. I wonder what happened between them last night that made Frank feel that he should make her breakfast in bed.

"As much as I'd love to stay and tease you some more, I better hurry up and shower or my breakfast will get cold," quips Joe. He quickly hangs up the phone before his brother can answer. A smirk forms on his lips, and then he puts the phone down and walks into the bathroom.
