Lucina rocked the bundle in her arms as she paced around the nursery. Said bundle held her eight-month-old daughter who was sick with a fever. Lucina had not left her side since it hit. It pained her to no end seeing her precious baby girl suffering. The royal physicians had told her it would likely pass in a few days, but that was not good enough for the green mother.
So, Lucina did what she could to soothe her daughter's discomfort. Whether that merely be by her reassuring presence, making sure she was fed even when she did not feel like eating, or like at that moment where she tried to lull the baby to sleep with a lullaby. She had mixed results, but Morgan was not doing much sleeping or eating, and neither was her mother.
She was busy humming a lullaby that she remembered her mother singing to her when she heard the sound of the door creaking open. Motherhood had not dulled her senses. At least not that much.
"Is she asleep?" The hushed voice of her husband asked.
"No," Lucina replied back troubled at her own statement, "She hasn't slept in almost twenty-four hours."
"She's not the only one," Robin stepped inside, "I can stay with her for a bit while you sleep." Robin was growing almost as concerned for his wife as he was his daughter. She had maybe gotten five hours of sleep in the past two days.
"No," Lucina shook her head, "You still have to go to work in the morning." That was only part of it in truth. In reality, she simply did not want to leave Morgan's side. Perhaps it was irrational, but she was her mother, and she was not leaving her side!
Robin sighed knowing better than to argue, "Alright, but how about I stay with you anyway? At least for a while."
Lucina nodded before Morgan stirred and let out a weak whine, "Oh! Shh, it's okay. Mommy's still here. Look. Daddy's here too," Lucina tilted the child so that she could better see her father. She did look mildly relieved at having the comfort of both her parents' presence.
With her somewhat comforted, Lucina began rocking her again. She started back on the lullaby which Morgan always seemed to enjoy. She looked up at her mother in awe momentarily forgetting her discomfort. Robin merely watched in amazement as Lucina paced around the nursery humming to their daughter.
As time passed the humming transitioned to full on – albeit quiet – singing. Robin was always amazed at how lovely of a singing voice she had. It was a shame she had so little confidence in it as she rarely sang, but Robin loved it every time she did. As she sang through the verses of the old Ylissean lullaby, Morgan slowly shuddered her eyes and finally drifted off to sleep.
"You should get some sleep too," Robin noted as Lucina set Morgan down in the crib.
"I'll sleep here," Lucina spoke sparing Robin a glance. She hid it well, but she was exhausted. Not that most could tell. He would wager only himself and her parents would be able to notice. Maybe her sister.
"Alright," Robin relented before leaning over and kissing her on the forehead, "Goodnight. To both of you."
"Goodnight," Lucina smiled tiredly. As Robin left the room, Lucina sat in a chair off to the side of the room. The chair was mostly used by Lucina for nursing and by both of them for story time and it was moderately comfortable, but it was hardly made for sleeping. Still, Lucina found her eyelids exceptionally heavy as she eyed her daughter's crib.
Her daughter. How far she had come from spending her nights dirty and cold wondering if she would live to see another day. The idea of a family seemed so preposterous then. Not to mention she had not really focused on finding love. However, she seemed to have stumbled into it somehow, and she was exceedingly happy that she had.
Though, when Lissa had told her that she was pregnant, she had been mildly mortified. She feared being a bad mother. She had no doubt that Robin would be an amazing father – which he was – but she severely doubted her own ability to raise a child. She still did really. She had asked her mother for advice, though, she was also still learning how to be a mother as odd as it may have seemed. Still, Robin never seemed to share her doubts about her ability. He had been very reassuring even as her hormones drove her to even greater anxiety as her due date got closer and concerns over the baby's safety grew.
Fortunately, everything had gone well with Morgan's birth being very by the books. Seeing her for the first time, Lucina's doubts seemed to somehow disappear and double all at the same time. She was overcome with joy at the sight of her baby girl, but she now had a face to put with who she feared letting down.
As Lucina eventually drifted off herself, she did so with the determination in her heart that she would not fail her daughter. Whatever happened, she was determined to be a good mother. Whether she believed it or not, so far, she was succeeding.
A/N: Apologies for being so late on the Lucina story. On the bright side, I am close to finishing the rough draft of the final chapter, so, please, bear with me.
