The Winx Club's Sodor Adventures - Season 2

Episode 2: A Cow on the Line

Edward was getting old. His bearings were worn, and he clanked as he puffed along. He and Tecna were taking empty cattle cars to a market town. The sun shone, birds sang.

But Edward and Tecna were heading for trouble. "Come on! Come on!" He puffed.

"Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh!" screamed the cars.

Edward puffed and clanked, the cars rattled and screamed.

Some cows were grazing near by. They were not used to trains. The noise and smoke disturbed them. As Edward and Tecna clanked by, the cows broke through the fence and ran across the line. A coupling was broken and some cars were left behind.

Edward felt the jerk, but didn't take much notice. He and Tecna were used to cattle cars. "Bother those cars!" he thought. "Why can't they come quietly?" He was at Knapford Station before either he or Tecna realized what had happened.

When Gordon and Henry heard about the accident, they laughed and boasted. "Fancy, allowing cows to break his train! They wouldn't dare do that to us. We'd show them!"

Old Toby and the other fairies were cross.

"It's okay, Edward," said Tecna, "they're just teasing you about our mishap. This sort of accident doesn't happen a lot."

"Tecna's right," said Toby. "You couldn't help it, Edward. They've never met cows. I have, and I know the trouble they are."

Yeah," said Roxy. "Good thing the cows from my childhood farm don't behave like that at all. But the ones here on Sodor are very stubborn."

"Have any of you girls any experience with disrespecting cows here yourselves?" asked Toby.

"Well, Stella made a big mistake calling one of them a four-legged piece of hamburger one time," said Aisha.

"Yes," said Stella, feeling rather embarrassed, "and I was left with a number of bruises afterwards. I've been in James and Edward's wheels, and Gordon wouldn't stop teasing me about it for weeks."

"I see," said Toby as they watch Edward and Tecna leave.

Some days later, Gordon and Aisha rushed by Edward and Tecna at Wellsworth Station.

"Boop, Boop! Mind the cows! Hurry, Hurry, Hurry!" puffed Gordon.

"Don't make such a fuss! Don't make such a fuss!" grumbled his coaches.

A long stretch of line lay ahead. In the distance was a bridge over the Crosby River. It seemed to Gordon that there was something on the bridge.

Aisha thought so too. "Whoa, Gordon!" she said, and shut off steam.

"Pah!" said Gordon. "It's only a cow! Shoo! Shoo!"

They moved slowly on to the bridge, but the cow wouldn't "Shoo"! She had lost her calf, and felt lonely. "Moo!" she said sadly.

Aisha and the conductor tried to send her away, but she wouldn't go.

Henry and Flora arrived. "What's this? A cow? I'll soon settle her. Be off! Be off!"

"Moo!" said the cow.

Henry backed away nervously. "I don't want to hurt her."

At Crosby station, Flora told the porter and the stationmaster about the cow, and warned the signalman that the line was blocked.

"That must be Bluebell," said the porter. "Her calf is here, looking for her mother. Percy and Musa will take her along."

At the bridge, Bluebell was very pleased to her calf again, and the porter led them away.

"Not a word. Keep it dark," whispered Gordon and Henry to each other. They felt rather silly, but the story soon spread.

"Well, well, well!" chuckled Edward. "Two big engines afraid of a cow."

"Yes," laughed Tecna. "That was absolutely funny."

"Afraid? Rubbish!" said Gordon. "We didn't want the poor thing to hurt herself by running up against us. We stopped so as not to excite her. You see what I mean, my dear Edward?"

"Yes, Gordon," said Edward.

"Alright, Gordon," said Aisha. "We hear you. For once, we'll give you and Henry a break, seeing that you'll have common sense." And in her mind, she said to herself, "It serves you right for making fun of Stella and Edward."

Gordon felt somehow that Edward and Tecna "saw" only too well.
